Lincoln Mkx problems

The Lincoln MKX is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV marketed and sold by the Lincoln brand of Ford Motor Company. Introduced in late 2006, the MKX ("X" stands for "crossover") is the first crossover SUV offered by the Lincoln brand. Initially the smallest Lincoln SUV, it has been slotted between the Lincoln Corsair and the Lincoln Aviator. It is the Lincoln counterpart of the Ford Edge crossover across both generations.

The first-generation MKX was produced from 2007 to 2015, based upon the CD3 platform. The second generation is based on the CD4 platform. Both generations of the MKX were manufactured at Oakville Assembly in Oakville, Ontario, Canada alongside the Ford Edge, Ford Flex, and Lincoln MKT.

As Lincoln phased out its use of "MK" model names, the MKX adopted the Lincoln Nautilus nameplate as part of a mid-cycle update in 2018 for the 2019 model year.

Common Lincoln Mkx problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the Lincoln MKX, several common problems have been reported:

  • Coolant Leaks: Coolant leaks have been a significant concern for Lincoln MKX owners. These leaks can lead to engine damage, potentially requiring expensive repairs or even a complete engine replacement. Symptoms of this issue include clicking noises before the engine shuts down and the mixing of coolant with oil, causing significant damage.
  • Brake Problems: Some models of the Lincoln MKX have been reported to have problematic brake systems. Owners have complained about issues such as difficulty in braking, with the brake pedal going to the floor, and sudden brake failures. These problems pose serious safety risks, especially at high speeds or in heavy traffic situations.
  • Faulty Door Sensors: Another common problem reported by Lincoln MKX owners is faulty door sensors. This issue causes the system to display a "door ajar" warning even when the doors are securely closed. The warning can affect various vehicle functions, leading to inconvenience and potential safety concerns.
  • Headliner Rattling: Some model years of the Lincoln MKX have experienced rattling noises in the interior due to poor fitment of the headliner. This issue can create annoying sounds, affecting the overall driving experience. Repairs may involve re-securing the foam blocks with cable or zip ties to address the rattling noise.
  • Electrical Problems: Owners have reported various electrical issues with the Lincoln MKX, including problems with the alternator, starter, battery, ignition system, and other electrical components. These issues can lead to malfunctions in critical vehicle systems, affecting the overall performance and reliability of the car.

These common problems with the Lincoln MKX highlight the importance of regular maintenance and prompt repairs to address issues before they escalate and lead to costly repairs or safety hazards.

This happened On [XXX] and the vehicle is available for inspection here in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. In 2010 Lincoln implemented an override device to the brake system knowing of the problem and there was no recall for vehicles prior to 2010. My safety was put at risk and that of others. If someone had been exiting the store or walking down the sidewalk they could have been killed. I am suffering with physical and mental problems as a result of this. Police report also states this was definitely a vehicle malfunction. There were no warning signs prior to the incident. Claim has been filed with the Office of General Council at Lincoln, but remains unresolved to date. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-12

  • Summary: I am satisfied with the help that the customer service assisted me with and that was getting my service moved up to September 26th from the original date of October 30th. But I am not satisfied with the remedy. I have received several written letters from Lincoln that go into detail of the recall on my car and as well they say and in BIG RED LETTERS ..DO NOT DRIVE YOUR CAR UNTIL REPAIRS ARE DONE. WELL, I should say that you see my 2010 Lincoln Mkx is my and only vehicle I own I can not just park it up and forget I have a life and a job because of no fault of my own that my one and only car urgently is needing repair to the factory installed air bags. Therefore I ask Lincoln to assist me with a rental until my car had been repaired. I do not feel safe DRIVING MY CAR.Letter's I have on hand from Lincoln plainly stating DO NOT DRIVE. I am upset Lincoln ortrays they care so much to bombard me with all the recall letters and such but pretty much told me NO WE DONT DO RENTAL CARS So what I am to do??? I don't have rental coverage on my insurance. I couldn't afford it. So what choice do I have??? If I do die from their faulty air bags imploding on me atleast make sure my children and grandchildren knew I begged for a rental but Lincoln couldn't back me with that. I guess making luxury car's for so many years has not left them with much profit Seeing as how in a life or death situation brought on by their mistake they leave their customers to chance it because it cost to much for rentals to ensure their customers are kept safe until their car is serviced and safe to drive. They have no compassion for people is how I am feeling about this whole situation. Only covering themselves legally in the cheapest fix possible to avoid legal issues. Guess Lincoln owners are just numbers and dollar signs and not mothers, fathers, daughters, sons, aunt or uncles or grandparents that are loved and would be missed severely in the event of their death by a recalled air bag.

  • Summary: Continious soft brake pedal , with failure of brakes a couple of times nearly causing wreck. Auto inspected by Reineke Ford Findlay, Oh. Needs replacement of ABS brake module - hydrolic and electrical. No warning lights ever. Ford needs to extend the ABS module recall to include additional years, one of those being my 2014 MKX. To add to problem, even if I could afford to fix $2,000.00 repair......parts are on backorder........hence defining what a problem this is! This has been going on since April 2024.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-11
  • Date Complaint: 2024-09-03
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 2LMDU88C67B
  • Components: AIR BAGS,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: My 2007 Lincoln MKX was in Drive with the brake depressed waiting to back up into a traffic lane from an angled parking space in front of a small shop in our historic downtown area. Suddenly, the vehicle accelerated forward at a high rate of speed jumping the shallow curb and slamming into the cement foundation of the store. Continuing to depress the brakes made no difference in stopping the jarring unintended forward motion. The speed moving forward was so high that in the 10-12 feet from the curb to the store entrance the impact demolished the entire front of the vehicle even bending the front axels. The airbags did not deploy at all. The witness interviewed, reported loud screeching tires as her back was to the scene during the collision. Local PD, EMS and Fire all responded, with a full police report filed. It was extremely fortunate no person was either on the sidewalk or in the entrance to the storefront. My injuries included severe bruising to the right side of my neck, as well as a hematoma on my right tibia and an oblique fracture to bones in my right foot. There were no passengers in the car with me. The accident, and extreme concern over the malfunction of the vehicle allowing it to take control away from myself as the driver, has been reported to Ford Lincoln and a claim number established. My insurance company took possession of the vehicle from the tow lot after three days after determining it was a total loss. To reiterate, there was no warning at all before the incident. I was simply waiting for traffic to clear, so I could put the vehicle from Drive into Reverse and pull out of the parking space.

  • Summary: My brakes have failed on this car three times. I had new front and back brakes installed on [XXX] mileage 44882. Again my brakes failed on [XXX] mileage 47626. A new brake booster was installed along with front brakes. Again on [XXX] brakes failed again and a brake booster and front brakes were installed. Mileage 54924. Today I was driving to my daughters house in Zanesville, Ohio and my brakes failed again. My car is still down in Zanesville because I could not drive it home. The mileage is 57000. Every time this happens I risk an accident. Even though the brake booster is covered by extended warranty, because Lincoln knows about this problem, I still have to pay for brakes and other cost. Isn't there anything that can be done about this? INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

  • Summary: In June 2024, i received a letter dated March of 2024 for a Customer Satisfaction Program 13N02 that ended before i had a chance to take my vehicle into the repair shop to have this item fixed. Actually, i received the letter past the date that it could qualify for the repair as it was 10 years from the original warranty or 150,000 miles. My original warranty start date was December 2013. So they sent the "Customer Satisfaction Program notice 13N02" After the date it could be repaired. I called the dealership anyway, despite their error, to see if they may want to fix this Spongy Break Pedal anyway since they had messed up their mailing date. (Shultz Lincoln in Wexford, PA) They declined and told me they would be happy to look at it for a low fee of $180.00. I told them they should do it for free. I then called Lincoln directly where i spoke with a very nice gentleman. He looked through every possible scenario and decided that i was not able to get it fixed under the program. There really should be some type of law disallowing them to send out post dated letters knowing very well that they were not going to fix it because it was past the date of repair. My brake pedal hits the floor when i try to stop and if i do not push on the pedal hard enough to brake without the booster kicking in, i bump into things. Solution, i have attached a 2 channel dash cam to the vehicle with a live feed posted to a server in order to document my death caused by Lincoln. I have instructed my attorneys to release the feed upon my death and have authorized a law suit in my name. if won, they have been told to distribute the money to all of the homeless people that the Lincoln Executives drive past with their pocket tight and windows up every day on their way to work. This should be a crime. They should fix their safety issues, they should not be allowed to send out notices offering to pay for repairs that they do not plan on repairing. Also, they could spare a dollar for the Homeless

  1. Leif Schowalter 2025-05-06

    Vehicle year: 2013

I've owned this car for over 18 months and I'm considering trading it in. Unfortunately, I've had a few issues with it. At just 5 months, the brakes started making a terrible grinding noise and I had to get the rotors turned. I've since replaced the rotors at 35k miles. On the bright side, the car is great for hauling my kids' hockey equipment. However, after a year, I had to replace the battery due to some odd electrical malfunctions. The wipers still turn on for no reason, even on sunny days at stop lights. Sometimes the radio features don't work properly, displaying two different stations on the dash compared to the instrument cluster screen. The acceleration is sluggish, but the ride is comfortable. Unfortunately, I really dislike the blinker. It's too hard to operate and I worry it will break every time I use it. The all-weather tires are terrible in the snow and rain, and I'm hesitant to spend extra money on winter tires. Additionally, I have one tire that sounds out of round and needs to be replaced, even though it still has half its tread left. The road noise is overwhelming and not what I expected from a The technician advised me not to leave the key fob in the car or near it as it may drain the fob battery by trying to make contact with the computer. They also mentioned that it is difficult to determine the exact cause of the issue. Even with the key in the cup holder, pocket or purse, I still get the 'No Key Detected' message. On a positive note, I purchased winter tires for the car and it made a world of difference. However, at the 70k mile update, I decided to trade it in as the door sensor issue was a common problem with no Ford recall currently available. The dealer mentioned that the part alone costs $180 and the fix could cost up to $500. Although I liked the vehicle, the electrical issues made it unreliable and expensive to repair. I hope the new owner enjoys it and doesn't get stalled somewhere.

Hey there! I wanted to share my experience with the MKX. While it may not have been the best fit for me, I have to say that my previous Lincolns have been amazing. I still own my 1998 Mark VIII and it's just as reliable as a new car! Unfortunately, I did have some issues with the MKX's touch screen and software, as well as some costly repairs for the oil pressure and PTU. I've also heard about some water pump problems that can be quite serious. However, I do want to emphasize that these issues are not unique to the MKX and can be found in other all wheel drive Fords. It's always a good idea to do your own research and find the car that's right for you. Thanks for listening!Hi Edmonds, I hope you're doing well. I wanted to give you an update on my situation. Unfortunately, my MKX was totaled on August 31st due to a pickup truck that rammed me from behind while out of control. However, I'm grateful that I didn't have to do any major repairs from 140,000 to 190,000 miles, and only had to replace a few inexpensive sensors and all of the calipers when one of them seized. I was also lucky that the water pump seals never let go. I did want to share a tip with you - to avoid the PTU problem, it's important to drain and refill the gear oil every second or third oil change. It's not an easy task since there's no drain plug, but it can save you a $2,300 repair bill. Unfortunately, there's no fix for the vent problem that causes gear oil to drip onto the exhaust pipe that's under the PTU. On the bright side, I'm now driving a Mercedes Benz E-Class that I absolutely love - it's the best car I've owned in the past 20 years! In fact, I loved it so much that I bought another one for my wife - she has the sedan and I have the Cabriolet. I'm happy to say that I'm done with Ford forever. Take care!

I had never heard of a power steering gear until mine broke. However, I am confident that the $3,000 I paid for the replacement was worth it. While it was disappointing to have to replace it, I am certain that it was a necessary expense. I believe that the quality of the replacement part is top-notch and I am confident that it will not fail again. Overall, I am satisfied with the service I received.

UPDATE: Hello! I wanted to share my experience with my previous vehicle. Unfortunately, it had some mechanical issues and needed a lot of repairs. However, I am happy to say that I have just leased a 2019 Jaguar F Pace S and so far, it's been great! It comes with a 45 year/50,000 bumper to bumper warranty which gives me peace of mind. I also recently picked up my 2016 MKX Reserve and while it had some issues, it was still a pleasure to drive. The optional massaging seats were definitely worth it and the Revel sound system was phenomenal. I did have some trouble with the Sync 3 system, but overall, it was a good car. Thank you for listening to my experience and I hope this helps anyone looking for a new car.

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share my experience with the 2017 Lincoln MKX. While it is a great car, I did notice that the 2.7L turbocharged model has a loud turbocharger on acceleration which can be quite annoying. I spoke with the dealer and they assured me that there was nothing wrong with the car. However, after test driving several other Ford vehicles with turbochargers, I found that this issue seems to be unique to the 2017 Lincoln MKX with the 2.7L engine. It's important to note that this problem is not recognized by Lincoln. Until this issue is resolved, I would advise against purchasing this particular model. Thank you for taking the time to read my message.

Just to be transparent, this is actually my third MKX, and I've also owned an Edge. After a year of driving this vehicle, I can confidently say that I have a well-informed knowledge of its capabilities. Let's start with the positives: The ride is super quiet and handles corners excellently. The overall look is nice, although I won't miss the mustache grill. The base engine provides adequate power, and the kick-open feature for the hatch works well. Sync 3 is an improvement, and Sirius works better than before. The value for the lease price is excellent. Now, let's talk about the negatives: The shifter on the stack should have haptic feedback. More than once, I found myself in the wrong gear because I didn't touch it hard enough. The interior still lacks a luxurious, high-quality feel, and the buttons look Ford-esque. If you want to play in this league, it takes more. I recently had trouble finding the phone charging port, which wasn't in a convenient place. Observations: The fit and finish are nice, but I have a loose trim plate. Gas mileage is below the sticker, but that's to be expected. The older MKX had much better sight lines, as the pillars by the windshield are thick. Overall, I highly recommend this vehicle.

Impressive ride. Had a jeep for 6 years, the MKX is a breath of fresh air. Did extensive comparison with Lexus, Cadillac and Toyota. Lincoln wins hands down. Got an excellent price too! Wife has a BMW, mine is better!

I have been eyeing this SUB since it came out! It took me 8 months to convince my husband to buy me this car. We bought the 2008 Limited Edition with the 20

I'm someone who prefers coupes. I like being low to the ground and having a good grip on the road. The idea of an SUV never really interested me... until I test drove the MKX. It was small enough that I still felt in control, but large enough to handle any extra storage needs. The black interior with natural-colored wood grain trim is the perfect combination in my opinion, and it looks great with the black exterior. The features are outstanding for an '08 model. The white dash lights are a nice touch, and the ride is very comfortable. The cooled/heated seats make it even more comfortable, and the interior lighting is bright without being annoying to the driver. The only issue we had was the speed sensor going out 1500 miles after owning it, but fortunately, the dealer put a 3000-mile warranty on it, which was pretty surprising for an 8-year-old vehicle, and it was covered. I love this SUV, and I'm very glad we went with Lincoln. Even though I'm a Toyota guy, I've always liked Ford, and I figured Lincoln was the way to go if I wanted all the features. UPDATE 5/23/19: I'm still loving this vehicle. The leather has held up very nicely, and it still drives great. Other than the speed sensor issue in my initial review, it’s only been in the shop for oil, tires, and a tune-up. We did have to replace the brakes 6 months ago, but that’s it. We’ve put 40k miles on it since my initial review above. I only have one complaint... sometimes if the Bluetooth won't connect to my phone, I have to turn the car off and back on to get it connected. I wonder if this is a Lincoln and/or Ford thing because my 2011 Lincoln MKZ does the same thing. That’s it for a complaint. I’m really enjoying driving my Lincoln and hope that it remains reliable because I could see us being a lifelong Lincoln family.UPDATE 11/24/20 Being a 12, nearly 13 year old vehicle at this point, we've actually received compliments on having a nice car. I'm still very happy with this vehicle.
