2012 Lincoln Mkx problems

lincoln logo

The Lincoln MKX is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV marketed and sold by the Lincoln brand of Ford Motor Company. Introduced in late 2006, the MKX ("X" stands for "crossover") is the first crossover SUV offered by the Lincoln brand. Initially the smallest Lincoln SUV, it has been slotted between the Lincoln Corsair and the Lincoln Aviator. It is the Lincoln counterpart of the Ford Edge crossover across both generations.

The first-generation MKX was produced from 2007 to 2015, based upon the CD3 platform. The second generation is based on the CD4 platform. Both generations of the MKX were manufactured at Oakville Assembly in Oakville, Ontario, Canada alongside the Ford Edge, Ford Flex, and Lincoln MKT.

As Lincoln phased out its use of "MK" model names, the MKX adopted the Lincoln Nautilus nameplate as part of a mid-cycle update in 2018 for the 2019 model year.

Common 2012 Lincoln Mkx problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the 2012 Lincoln MKX, several common problems have been reported:

  • Transmission and Half-Shaft Problems:
    • Reports of breaking or dislodging of the drive half-shaft have surfaced. Ford acknowledged faulty assembly procedures causing this issue and initiated a recall to inspect affected vehicles and replace the drive shaft if excessive wear of the internal splines was detected.
  • Service Brake Failure:
    • The most reported complaint on the 2012 Lincoln MKX is service brake failure. Many owners have faced a sudden loss of braking force, often without any warning. The primary cause of this issue has been identified as a faulty brake booster unit. Despite the widespread nature of this problem, Ford chose to extend the warranty of the part rather than issue a recall.
  • Electric System Complaints:
    • Issues with the shifter, A/C problems, and structural complaints have been noted. For instance, a damaged pick-up unit on the base of the shifter can prevent the ECU from detecting if the vehicle is in Park. Another common problem is a faulty passenger side blend door actuator mechanism causing the vehicle to blow cold air despite high temperatures being set.

These problems highlight significant safety and functionality concerns that owners of the 2012 Lincoln MKX have faced. It's crucial for potential buyers to be aware of these issues to make informed decisions regarding the purchase and maintenance of this vehicle.

ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-21
  • VIN: 2LMDJ6JK5CB
  • Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Entering I-294 express ramp, vehicle was not accelerating beyond 40mph. then as I entered highway it shut down completely. I coasted to the right shoulder. The dash displayed a "low oil pressure" alert. So I did not attempt to restart the car. When I had it towed home, I checked the oil level and it was full. Nothing like this happened before. The vehicle is almost 12 years old with 167,000 miles. Had this happened in traffic on the expy, I could have been creamed by other cars or a truck. I am going to the dealer today to investigate but this seems like an anomaly where the engine shuts down because the computer thinks there is a catastrophic failure that is not really happening.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-01-28
  • VIN: 2lmdj6jk9cb
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: The braking system failed to adequately stop the car. In contacting the Lincoln Customer Service, this failure mode is associated with a Lincoln Customer program # 13N02. This program has a 10 years or 150000 miles limit for repair. The vehicle (MKX - 2012) has 65000 miles and was purchased 12/20/2011. It is 1 month out of the defined period. The car has only been driven a few hundred miles since 2020 due to illness and death of the owners. The brake system is a safety device and should not be considered a "Customer Care" program with limits as noted above. The failure of a breaking system will cause potential personal injury including death and should be reconsidered as a safety recall or the program should be extended. The incident of a major traffic accident on the highway was avoided that would have involved multiple cars if not taking evasive action in the median. The problem was confirmed by a dealer, verbally given the operation of the brake system. There were no warning lamps or any other indication prior to the incident. The VIN: [XXX] Thank you for your follow-up of this situation. [XXX], [XXX] INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

There were no type of warning lights at all on the dash board.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-08-15
  • VIN: 2LMDJ6JK0CB
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I had to slam on the brakes due to a driver pulling out in front of me without looking. The brakes went to the floor and I had difficulty getting the car stopped. I took it in to my mechanic and they diagnosed as a master cylinder, which I had replaced 7 months prior for a similar incident. But, replacing the master cylinder didn’t solve the problem. After more work, they replaced the entire ABS system for the rear brakes ($1900). I drove it 3 times and the brakes locked up on their own while I was driving at 60 miles an hour. When we got to the side of the road, smoke was billowing out of the brakes and the car would not move even though we were pushing the gas. We had the car towed ($300) back to the mechanic. They said the brake fuel line had gotten clogged and the front master cylinder needed to be replaced ($900). Drove twice and same issue, this time smoke billowing out of rear brakes. All brake fluid has completely drained and car needs to be repaired again. It is not drivable, so we will have to have it towed again. I’m so frustrated because this is extremely dangerous and I am stuck with a vehicle that seems to be irreparable and not drivable. Shame on Ford for not recalling this when it is obviously such an issue.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-09-04
  • VIN: 2LMDJ6JK5CB
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I was driving and when I pressed on the brake, the pedal went far down and had no indication of the care stopping. It did, but it took a long time to brake. I took it for repair at Firestone, because my dealer warranty was expired. However, the Firestone let me know there is a booster brake replacement letter; the number of the recall is: 13N02. My car still qualifies as it is under 150,000 miles. The dealership repair denies my car is eligible; the main Lincoln office customer service representative also denied my car based on the vin. Is this correct? The letter of Customer Satisfaction Warranty shoes no exception based on vin?

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-11-03
  • VIN: 2LMDJ8JK9CB
  • Components: STRUCTURE,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: MY 2012 LINCOLN MKX IS EXPERIENCING AN ISSUE WITH THE BRAKES MAKING IT ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO STOP. THE BRAKE PEDAL IS REQUIRING EXTREME FORCE TO STOP AND GOES ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR, FOLLOWED BY A HISSING AIRY SOUND. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE LINCOLN DEALER WHO DIAGNOSED THE ISSUE AS A BRAKES AND CHARGED ME $900. AFTER PICKING UP THE VEHICLE AND TEST DRIVING IT, THE PROBLEM PERSISTED. AFTER RE-DIAGNOSING THEY POINTED THE FINGER TO A HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT. THIS ISSUE POSES GREAT DANGER AND THE INABILITY TO STOP WITHOUT LITERALLY STANDING AND APPLYING FORCE TO THE BRAKES. I HAVE HAD TO STOP DRIVING THE CAR BECAUSE WHEN COMING TO A STOP AT ANY SPEED, THE FORCE NEEDED TO STOP AND A COUPLE CLOSE CALLS WITH RAMMING IN THE BACK OF SOMEONE, THE CAR IS JUST TOO DANGEROUS. ADDITIONALLY, I'VE HAD OTHER ISSUES WITH THIS CAR WHERE THE TRUNK WILL NOT STAY OPEN. IT DOES NOT DETECT A PERSON PUTTING THINGS IN THE TRUNK AND I'VE HAD TO RUN AND PUSH IT UP TO SAVE A KID WHO WAS LOADING SPORTS EQUIPMENT.

2012 Lincoln Mkx recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 1 recalls for different components of the 2012 Lincoln Mkx.

2014-07-02
  • Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
  • Components: POWER TRAIN:AXLE ASSEMBLY:AXLE SHAFT
  • Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2012-2014 Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX vehicles manufactured September 2, 2010, to November 30, 2013; 2013-2014 Ford Taurus and Lincoln MKS vehicles manufactured August 25, 2011, to November 30, 2013; and 2013-2014 Ford Flex and Lincoln MKT vehicles manufactured September 12, 2011, to November 30, 2013. In the affected vehicles, the halfshaft retention circlip may not have been properly installed, and as a result, the halfshaft may move outward and disengage from the linkshaft while driving and without prior warning.
  • Consequence: If the halfshaft and linkshaft become disengaged while driving, power will no longer be transmitted to the wheels, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash. Additionally, if the parking brake is not applied before exiting the vehicle, the vehicle may roll away despite the transmission being placed in 'Park', increasing the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.
  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the vehicles to make sure that the halfshaft is properly retained. If it is not, dealers will replace the linkshaft and also replace the halfshaft if it shows evidence of spline damage, free of charge. The recall began on August 4, 2014. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-800-392-3673. Ford's number for this recall is 14S10.

Negative 2012 Lincoln Mkx car reviews

  1. Jovany Miller 2024-11-06

I recently traded in my MKX after owning it for less than a year and unfortunately, I had a negative experience with the new Lincoln and Ford MyTouch Sync system. It seems that the system was pushed to market too soon and as a result, it is quite buggy and slow. I would advise against purchasing any vehicle with the Ford or Lincoln MyTouch system.

  2. Deron Langosh 2024-11-04

Despite the initial issue with the in-dash computer freezing up, I am confident in the capabilities of my 2011 MKX AWD Limited edition. After contacting Lincoln, I was informed that they were aware of the issue and were working on a solution. Although it took six weeks for the update to become available, the dealer was able to successfully update the computer in just two days. While there was a minor setback when the vehicle did not start the following morning, I am still impressed with the overall performance of the car. As with any new model, there may be some initial issues, but I have faith in the quality of Ford's vehicles. Additionally, I have noticed that the 2011 interior is slightly noisier than the 2008 model, but this is a minor issue that does not detract from the overall experience of driving the car.

  3. Brandon Ruecker 2024-10-26

1/6/2020 - Finally got rid of my old vehicle and upgraded to a 2020 Red Toyota 4Runner Off Road Premium! Loving my new ride! I had purchased my previous car used, and unfortunately, the engine needed to be replaced less than 50,000 miles later. The cost was outrageous, and it was disappointing that the dealership claimed to have never heard of this issue before. After doing some research, I found out that this is a common problem with Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX engines, and it's hard to believe that any dealership is not aware of it. I had previously owned a 1999 Mercury Mountaineer Premier, which was a great vehicle, and I thought purchasing a Lincoln would be a good idea. However, I was disappointed with the quality of the MKX. Update: 3/31/18 - Since the engine was replaced, there has been a rattle that I can hear mostly above 65 mph. I went to the local Lincoln dealer where I had originally purchased my car to have an oil change and check this noise. They didn't find anything, but I will keep an eye on it. Overall, my experience with this vehicle has been poor. When I finish paying off my current vehicle, I plan to purchase a long-lasting Toyota 4Runner. Unfortunately, my Lincoln MKX has been quite unreliable, with mechanics unable to fix a persistent rattle and several breakdowns. The front leather seats are also showing signs of wear. I recently traded it in for a brand new red Toyota 4Runner Off Road Premium, which I absolutely love to drive!

  4. Frank West 2024-08-29

Despite all the impressive features of the 2011 Lincoln MKX, my wife and I have experienced some issues that have been quite disappointing. The ride can be quite bumpy due to the high-performance tires, which are hard and thin. It would have been great if the suspension was designed to compensate for this, to ensure a smoother ride for the driver and passengers. However, the biggest issue we have faced is with the Bluetooth system. Unfortunately, the sound quality is not up to par and there is a lot of static, especially at higher speeds. It would be great if Ford could improve their Bluetooth system to work better with their electronics.

  5. Richard Gusikowski 2024-08-24

I recently purchased a 2011 MKX and unfortunately, I have been experiencing some issues with the syncmyride computer system. I was hoping to find some information on any potential class action lawsuits against Ford and Microsoft for not supporting this system. It's disappointing that in 2018, this is still an issue. If anyone has any information on this topic, please let me know. Thank you!

Positive 2012 Lincoln Mkx car reviews

  1. Jerrold Little 2025-01-09

I recently traded in my Mercedes Benz ML-320 Diesel for the Lincoln MKX and I couldn't be happier! The Benz was causing me nothing but trouble and despite numerous visits to the garage, they couldn't get the transmission to work properly. This was my third Mercedes and I decided it was time for a change. The Lincoln MKX is a fantastic car - it's comfortable, smooth, and fits me perfectly. I really appreciate a car that is both comfortable and reliable, and the MKX ticks all the boxes. Plus, the oil changes are much more affordable than they were with the Benz! Overall, I am extremely satisfied with my decision to switch to the MKX. It's the perfect size for me, and a great alternative to the larger Navigator that I had before the Benz.

  2. Waylon Sawayn 2025-01-06

I recently switched from a 4x4 Ltd. Explorer to the MKX and I must say, it pulls my 17' Fishing Boat much better than the Explorer did. I absolutely adore the 'My Lincoln' technology and the convenience of being able to control most functions directly from the steering wheel. After driving 2,400 miles, the computer and math checks indicate an average of 22.1 mpg for my city/highway use, which is fantastic. The 3.7 Engine handles the western MI hills with ease, without the need for downshifting in most cases. I have personally hand waxed the car and found no body defects. Overall, it's a great car!

I recently traded my ML350 Benz for this little jewel in April. I drove it off the showroom floor with all the options loaded. At first, I found it difficult to drive and understand how everything worked. I had to pull over and read the owner's manual to learn how to turn on certain options, which was frustrating. However, after driving it for 6000 miles, I have fallen in love with this car. It has a learning curve, but with some patience and teaching, it's a great, fun car that turns heads and is a real treat to drive. You will definitely learn to love it!

I'll give the car high marks despite some issues with the touch system. Personally, I've had trouble with my phone staying linked to the car, as it constantly disconnects and reconnects 4 to 6 times during a 20-minute ride to work. Additionally, the computer in the car works slowly, reminding me of an old 386. It can take 20 seconds or more before the radio starts playing after start-up, and it's best to wait until the system is completely loaded (about 45 seconds) before using the touch screen. However, most everything else works fine, and there's a lot of very cool stuff. I hope this feedback helps improve the system.

Hi there! I wanted to share a frustrating experience I had with my car. I accidentally backed into my open garage door and caused $2000 worth of damage because there was no door chime to alert me. It's surprising because every other car I've owned has made a sound when the doors open with the key in the ignition. I think it's a design flaw that should be addressed. Thanks for listening!
