2012 Lincoln Mkx problems

lincoln logo

The Lincoln MKX is a mid-size luxury crossover SUV marketed and sold by the Lincoln brand of Ford Motor Company. Introduced in late 2006, the MKX ("X" stands for "crossover") is the first crossover SUV offered by the Lincoln brand. Initially the smallest Lincoln SUV, it has been slotted between the Lincoln Corsair and the Lincoln Aviator. It is the Lincoln counterpart of the Ford Edge crossover across both generations.

The first-generation MKX was produced from 2007 to 2015, based upon the CD3 platform. The second generation is based on the CD4 platform. Both generations of the MKX were manufactured at Oakville Assembly in Oakville, Ontario, Canada alongside the Ford Edge, Ford Flex, and Lincoln MKT.

As Lincoln phased out its use of "MK" model names, the MKX adopted the Lincoln Nautilus nameplate as part of a mid-cycle update in 2018 for the 2019 model year.

Common 2012 Lincoln Mkx problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the 2012 Lincoln MKX, several common problems have been reported:

  • Transmission and Half-Shaft Problems:
    • Reports of breaking or dislodging of the drive half-shaft have surfaced. Ford acknowledged faulty assembly procedures causing this issue and initiated a recall to inspect affected vehicles and replace the drive shaft if excessive wear of the internal splines was detected.
  • Service Brake Failure:
    • The most reported complaint on the 2012 Lincoln MKX is service brake failure. Many owners have faced a sudden loss of braking force, often without any warning. The primary cause of this issue has been identified as a faulty brake booster unit. Despite the widespread nature of this problem, Ford chose to extend the warranty of the part rather than issue a recall.
  • Electric System Complaints:
    • Issues with the shifter, A/C problems, and structural complaints have been noted. For instance, a damaged pick-up unit on the base of the shifter can prevent the ECU from detecting if the vehicle is in Park. Another common problem is a faulty passenger side blend door actuator mechanism causing the vehicle to blow cold air despite high temperatures being set.

These problems highlight significant safety and functionality concerns that owners of the 2012 Lincoln MKX have faced. It's crucial for potential buyers to be aware of these issues to make informed decisions regarding the purchase and maintenance of this vehicle.

ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-21
  • VIN: 2LMDJ6JK5CB
  • Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Entering I-294 express ramp, vehicle was not accelerating beyond 40mph. then as I entered highway it shut down completely. I coasted to the right shoulder. The dash displayed a "low oil pressure" alert. So I did not attempt to restart the car. When I had it towed home, I checked the oil level and it was full. Nothing like this happened before. The vehicle is almost 12 years old with 167,000 miles. Had this happened in traffic on the expy, I could have been creamed by other cars or a truck. I am going to the dealer today to investigate but this seems like an anomaly where the engine shuts down because the computer thinks there is a catastrophic failure that is not really happening.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-01-28
  • VIN: 2lmdj6jk9cb
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: The braking system failed to adequately stop the car. In contacting the Lincoln Customer Service, this failure mode is associated with a Lincoln Customer program # 13N02. This program has a 10 years or 150000 miles limit for repair. The vehicle (MKX - 2012) has 65000 miles and was purchased 12/20/2011. It is 1 month out of the defined period. The car has only been driven a few hundred miles since 2020 due to illness and death of the owners. The brake system is a safety device and should not be considered a "Customer Care" program with limits as noted above. The failure of a breaking system will cause potential personal injury including death and should be reconsidered as a safety recall or the program should be extended. The incident of a major traffic accident on the highway was avoided that would have involved multiple cars if not taking evasive action in the median. The problem was confirmed by a dealer, verbally given the operation of the brake system. There were no warning lamps or any other indication prior to the incident. The VIN: [XXX] Thank you for your follow-up of this situation. [XXX], [XXX] INFORMATION Redacted PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

There were no type of warning lights at all on the dash board.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-08-15
  • VIN: 2LMDJ6JK0CB
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I had to slam on the brakes due to a driver pulling out in front of me without looking. The brakes went to the floor and I had difficulty getting the car stopped. I took it in to my mechanic and they diagnosed as a master cylinder, which I had replaced 7 months prior for a similar incident. But, replacing the master cylinder didn’t solve the problem. After more work, they replaced the entire ABS system for the rear brakes ($1900). I drove it 3 times and the brakes locked up on their own while I was driving at 60 miles an hour. When we got to the side of the road, smoke was billowing out of the brakes and the car would not move even though we were pushing the gas. We had the car towed ($300) back to the mechanic. They said the brake fuel line had gotten clogged and the front master cylinder needed to be replaced ($900). Drove twice and same issue, this time smoke billowing out of rear brakes. All brake fluid has completely drained and car needs to be repaired again. It is not drivable, so we will have to have it towed again. I’m so frustrated because this is extremely dangerous and I am stuck with a vehicle that seems to be irreparable and not drivable. Shame on Ford for not recalling this when it is obviously such an issue.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-09-04
  • VIN: 2LMDJ6JK5CB
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: I was driving and when I pressed on the brake, the pedal went far down and had no indication of the care stopping. It did, but it took a long time to brake. I took it for repair at Firestone, because my dealer warranty was expired. However, the Firestone let me know there is a booster brake replacement letter; the number of the recall is: 13N02. My car still qualifies as it is under 150,000 miles. The dealership repair denies my car is eligible; the main Lincoln office customer service representative also denied my car based on the vin. Is this correct? The letter of Customer Satisfaction Warranty shoes no exception based on vin?

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-11-03
  • VIN: 2LMDJ8JK9CB
  • Components: STRUCTURE,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: MY 2012 LINCOLN MKX IS EXPERIENCING AN ISSUE WITH THE BRAKES MAKING IT ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO STOP. THE BRAKE PEDAL IS REQUIRING EXTREME FORCE TO STOP AND GOES ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR, FOLLOWED BY A HISSING AIRY SOUND. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE LINCOLN DEALER WHO DIAGNOSED THE ISSUE AS A BRAKES AND CHARGED ME $900. AFTER PICKING UP THE VEHICLE AND TEST DRIVING IT, THE PROBLEM PERSISTED. AFTER RE-DIAGNOSING THEY POINTED THE FINGER TO A HYDRAULIC CONTROL UNIT. THIS ISSUE POSES GREAT DANGER AND THE INABILITY TO STOP WITHOUT LITERALLY STANDING AND APPLYING FORCE TO THE BRAKES. I HAVE HAD TO STOP DRIVING THE CAR BECAUSE WHEN COMING TO A STOP AT ANY SPEED, THE FORCE NEEDED TO STOP AND A COUPLE CLOSE CALLS WITH RAMMING IN THE BACK OF SOMEONE, THE CAR IS JUST TOO DANGEROUS. ADDITIONALLY, I'VE HAD OTHER ISSUES WITH THIS CAR WHERE THE TRUNK WILL NOT STAY OPEN. IT DOES NOT DETECT A PERSON PUTTING THINGS IN THE TRUNK AND I'VE HAD TO RUN AND PUSH IT UP TO SAVE A KID WHO WAS LOADING SPORTS EQUIPMENT.

2012 Lincoln Mkx recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 1 recalls for different components of the 2012 Lincoln Mkx.

2014-07-02
  • Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company
  • Components: POWER TRAIN:AXLE ASSEMBLY:AXLE SHAFT
  • Summary: Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain model year 2012-2014 Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX vehicles manufactured September 2, 2010, to November 30, 2013; 2013-2014 Ford Taurus and Lincoln MKS vehicles manufactured August 25, 2011, to November 30, 2013; and 2013-2014 Ford Flex and Lincoln MKT vehicles manufactured September 12, 2011, to November 30, 2013. In the affected vehicles, the halfshaft retention circlip may not have been properly installed, and as a result, the halfshaft may move outward and disengage from the linkshaft while driving and without prior warning.
  • Consequence: If the halfshaft and linkshaft become disengaged while driving, power will no longer be transmitted to the wheels, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash. Additionally, if the parking brake is not applied before exiting the vehicle, the vehicle may roll away despite the transmission being placed in 'Park', increasing the risk of injury to exiting occupants and bystanders.
  • Remedy: Ford will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the vehicles to make sure that the halfshaft is properly retained. If it is not, dealers will replace the linkshaft and also replace the halfshaft if it shows evidence of spline damage, free of charge. The recall began on August 4, 2014. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-800-392-3673. Ford's number for this recall is 14S10.

Negative 2012 Lincoln Mkx car reviews

  1. Gideon Hoppe 2025-05-04

Hey there! I wanted to share my experience with the MKX. While it may not have been the best fit for me, I have to say that my previous Lincolns have been amazing. I still own my 1998 Mark VIII and it's just as reliable as a new car! Unfortunately, I did have some issues with the MKX's touch screen and software, as well as some costly repairs for the oil pressure and PTU. I've also heard about some water pump problems that can be quite serious. However, I do want to emphasize that these issues are not unique to the MKX and can be found in other all wheel drive Fords. It's always a good idea to do your own research and find the car that's right for you. Thanks for listening!Hi Edmonds, I hope you're doing well. I wanted to give you an update on my situation. Unfortunately, my MKX was totaled on August 31st due to a pickup truck that rammed me from behind while out of control. However, I'm grateful that I didn't have to do any major repairs from 140,000 to 190,000 miles, and only had to replace a few inexpensive sensors and all of the calipers when one of them seized. I was also lucky that the water pump seals never let go. I did want to share a tip with you - to avoid the PTU problem, it's important to drain and refill the gear oil at every second or third oil change. It's not an easy task since there's no drain plug, but it can save you a $2,300 repair bill. While there's no fix for the vent problem that causes gear oil to drip onto the exhaust pipe under the PTU, frequent gear oil changes can keep the PTU from failing. On a positive note, I'm now driving a Mercedes Benz E-Class that I absolutely love - it's the best car I've owned in the past 20 years! In fact, I loved it so much that I bought another one for my wife - she has the sedan and I have the Cabriolet. Thanks for your help, and take care!

  2. Paul Connelly 2025-04-15

I bought this vehicle brand new and fully loaded. Unfortunately, I had some issues with it early on. At 5K miles, the thermostat had to be changed due to a short that prevented the vehicle from starting. Then, at 10K miles, the power steering went out and I had to take it to the Lincoln dealership for repairs. They had to fix the power steering over 6 times, but unfortunately, they would not classify the vehicle as a LEMON. My car is currently in the shop again for the same issue and they have had it for over 2 weeks. I was just informed that I will have to live with a slight whining noise in the vehicle, which is disappointing. I feel that Lincoln should stand behind their products better. **Update: Since my last post, my car has been in the shop 5 more times for power steering issues. Lincoln sent an engineer to the dealership after having my car for over 3 1/2 weeks, only to be told that the noise is something I will have to live with as they have exhausted all avenues. Unfortunately, the mechanic didn't tighten the bolts on the tire rod, which could have been dangerous. There were no apologies from Lincoln. Now, there is another noise that sounds like the axle is going to split apart. The dealership tells me it's a loose pan underneath, but that wasn't the issue. The car is quite loud. I have been so frustrated with going back and forth with the dealership that I was forced to purchase a luxury car from Audi.

  3. Bennett Paucek 2025-04-12

The car seems to have some issues, particularly with the locking mechanism, which I believe is part of the first recall. While the technology of the car is impressive, there are some problems with the Bluetooth syncing, navigation, and rear camera. Lincoln's temporary fix of disconnecting the car battery for ten minutes to reset the system has only lasted about 5 days at most, and the promised permanent fix has been delayed twice now. Unfortunately, customer service at both Ford and the dealership has been lacking. Overall, it's been a frustrating experience.

  4. Jaleel Haag 2025-04-08

The car is comfortable, attractive and seems solidly built. It drives great and would be a terrific commuter if not for the MyLincoln Touch system. The system is not responsive, the buttons are too small, the screens are busy, and even the physical volume and fan swipe controls often don't respond. It can be a distraction while driving, which is a concern. Despite this, I still appreciate the car's other features. Since I commute 2 hours a day, I have set a rule for myself that I only use the system for very minimal commands while driving. I hope that future models will improve on this design. Although I am disappointed with this aspect of the car, I still value it and will consider my options before making any decisions.

  5. Jovany Miller 2024-11-06

I recently traded in my MKX after owning it for less than a year and unfortunately, I had a negative experience with the new Lincoln and Ford MyTouch Sync system. It seems that the system was pushed to market too soon and as a result, it is quite buggy and slow. I would advise against purchasing any vehicle with the Ford or Lincoln MyTouch system.

Positive 2012 Lincoln Mkx car reviews

  1. Fred Ryan 2025-05-01

We recently traded in our 8-year old Volvo XC70 for the MKX after 2 months of shopping. It's a perfect match for our driving style, which includes suburban errands and road trips in Minnesota. The MKX is just as solid as our Volvo and we loaded it with every option except the 'cargo convenience' package. AWD and heated seats were a must-have for us. Compared to other SUVs like the Lexus RX350, Acura RDX, and Volvo XC60, the MKX has a higher ride without the attendant 'roll' and bumps, and is noticeably quieter. The MYSYNC system works very well, but it's important to have the salesman walk you through the features and limitations of the voice-activated interface. The two-tone leather interior is sharp, and we're averaging 19 mpg.

Great car! I've tested several European SUVs, including the Mercedes GLK 350, Audi Q5, Lexus 350, and Acura MDX. While they're all good cars, only the Lincoln has that perfect balance of driving dynamics, luxury, and the best electronics in its class that made me choose this vehicle. The Lincoln Touch and Sync systems are simply the best in the business, and the THX2 system with 14 speakers and subwoofer is absolutely amazing. I believe that European and Japanese SUVs were ahead a few years back, but this Lincoln is clearly leading the pack now.

Just got the 2011 model after driving 48,500 miles on my 2009. I'm happy to report that the new one has more power, is quieter, and has improved technology. I absolutely love the comfortable ride, especially since I drive 600-700 miles per week. The new model also has better materials, which is a nice improvement from the previous model. The new look is also very nice. I've owned a Lexus RX, Highlander, and Grand Cherokee in the past, but the MKX blows them all away. I had no issues with the 2009 in bad weather, so I have no reason to think the 2011 will be any different. I highly recommend it!

We test drove several luxury car brands, including MB, Audi, BMW, and Volvo, before deciding on the MKX. The MKX offers a great value for its price, providing a similar level of equipment as the more expensive imports. In fact, to get the same features in an import, you would have to pay around $70k, if it's even available. For under $50k, the MKX offers a wide range of features, including heated front and rear seats, cooled front seats, navigation, blind spot and cross traffic warning system, adaptive cruise, a huge sunroof, adaptive HID headlights, a rearview camera, remote start, rain sensing wipers, adaptive cruise control, heated and telescopic steering wheel, and collision control. It's worth comparing the prices of an Audi, Volvo, or BMW with all of these features to see the difference.

We purchased our MKX from our local dealership when it had about 100,000 miles on it. Since then, we have added another 105,000 miles. We have had no major problems with the vehicle, only the usual maintenance parts. This is probably the best vehicle we have ever owned, and I am not even a Ford person. Everything, and I mean everything, still works perfectly. Based on other reviews I have read, we definitely got a peach of a car!
