The Lincoln LS is a four-door, five-passenger luxury sedan manufactured and marketed by Ford's Lincoln division over a single generation from 1999 until 2006. Introduced in June 1999 for the 2000 model year, the LS featured rear-wheel drive and near 50/50 weight distribution and was available with a V8 or V6, the latter initially offered with a manual transmission. The LS aimed to provide a blend of luxury and sport to attract a new generation of buyers to the Lincoln brand.

The LS shared the Ford DEW98 platform with the Jaguar S-Type and the Ford Thunderbird. Trim levels ranged from the base V6 model to the Special Edition V8 LSE trims in 2004, with revised front and rear fascia, taillights and foglights, and front grille.

LS models were manufactured at Ford's Wixom Assembly Plant until production ended on April 3, 2006, and the plant was idled as part of Ford's The Way Forward. Approximately 262,900 were manufactured, including 2,331 with manual transmissions and 1,500 LSE editions.

Common 2003 Lincoln Ls problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the Lincoln LS 2003, several common problems have been identified:

  1. Misfiring Engines: Some owners have reported misfiring engines around 80,000 miles. This issue can lead to rough idling, engine stalling, and shutdowns. Misfires can be caused by various factors, including bad coils and spark plugs.
  2. Timing Chain Failure: Owners have experienced engine problems due to bad timing chains. Over time, timing chains can become loose, jump a tooth, or break, affecting the engine's timing and leading to issues like engine failure and decreased fuel economy. A faulty timing tensioner can also contribute to premature timing chain failure.
  3. Cooling System Leaks: The Lincoln LS is known for cooling system leaks caused by old cracked plastic piping. Components like the overflow tank, water inlet housing, and T-connection are prone to developing cracks and leaks over time, impacting the car's cooling efficiency.
  4. Transmission Issues: Some owners have reported transmission problems, particularly around the 80-90K mark. Common transmission issues include the loss of 2nd gear and overdrive. The design of the transmission, with steel servo pistons going through a soft aluminum case, can lead to transmission failures over time.
  5. Electrical System Complexity: The Lincoln LS is described as having an extremely complex electrical system with numerous electronic components. Owners have reported frequent repairs related to electronic systems, highlighting the intricate design of the car and the challenges associated with maintaining these luxury features.
  6. Hydraulic Fan Pump Issues: Specifically affecting the Gen 1 models, the Lincoln LS 2003 can experience hydraulic fan pump issues. This problem can lead to overheating, as the fans may not cycle properly, causing cooling inefficiencies and potential engine overheating.

These common problems with the Lincoln LS 2003 highlight various issues that owners have faced, ranging from engine and cooling system issues to transmission and electrical system complexities. Addressing these problems promptly through professional diagnosis and repair can help maintain the performance and reliability of the vehicle.

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-08-17
  • VIN: 1LNHM87A43Y
  • Components: SUSPENSION,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
  • Summary: We have owned this car for about 3 years and it has been one problem after another and see same problems on line 1) Will start over heating sometimes at idle sometimes while driving (try being in DFW rush hour traffic and deal with that 2) Wife was driving one day and a bolt on right lower control arm broke sending her across 4 lanes of traffic including on coming. 3) All of a sudden when brake pedal was depressed started hearing vacuum leak under dash, brake pedal real hard , and couldn't hardly get car to stop, traction control light started flashing. Found bad brake booster and sensor located on it (both unavailable from manufacturer), also found on line that to get light to stop flashing you have to take to dealer and have reprogrammed (nobody else has the ability) 4) Have constantly had problem with check engine light staying on and running rough, no power, and having to replace ignition coils 5) While wife was driving with no advance notice of any kind heading home on farm market road with no shoulder to pull off on transmission went out completely and stopped pulling 6) Rear control arm bushings go from ok to extremely bad causing back end to drift from side to side going down the highway in a blink of an eye 7) Right front sway bar link keeps wearing control arm and snapping stud off 8) Sunroof drain hoses constantly failing and allowing water to get to electrical components The list goes on but all you have to do is a online search of the LS sport with the 3.9 v-8 and see all the problems. I was in automotive for over 16 years and every vehicle generally has its know couple problems but this is way beyond that. There hasn't been any accidents or injuries but real close to it.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2014-07-01
  • VIN: 1LNHM87A33Y
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: CEL CAME ON, CODE INDICATED TRANSMISSION ISSUE. "E" APPEARED IN THE GEAR INDICATOR, RATHER THAN THE GEAR THE TRANSMISSION WAS IN. TRANS WOULD NOT SHIFT INTO 2ND AND 5TH OF GEARS. HAD THE CAR TOWED TO TRANSMISSION SHOP, WHO TOLD ME THE PROBLEM WAS A BAD TRANSMISSION CASE THAT HAD BEEN DESTROYED AS THE RESULT OF SERVO IMPACT OVER TIME. A BUSHING COULD HAVE RESOLVED THE PROBLEM, HAD LINCOLN INSTALLED ONE AT MANUFACTURE. TECH TOLD ME THIS WAS A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THE LINCOLN 5R55 TRANSMISSION. SHOP INSTALLED NEW TRANSMISSION, WITH BUSHING, FOR $3700. NO WAY A MODERN TRANS SHOULD FAIL AT 113K MILES, ESP. FROM SOMETHING LIKE THIS, SO EASILY PREVENTABLE. LINCOLN PURCHASERS, WHO PAY A PREMIUM FOR THE ADVERTISED QUALITY OF A LINCOLN, EXPECT AND DESERVE BETTER, ESPECIALLY SINCE A SUBSTANTIAL NUMBER OF LINCOLN PURCHASERS HAVE EXPERIENCED THE EXACT SAME PROBLEM, AND HAVE HAD TO BEAR THE COST OF THE TRANSMISSION REPLACEMENT NECESSITATED BY LINCOLN'S MANUFACTURE AND PLACEMENT IN THE STREAM OF COMMERCE OF A PROVEN DEFECTIVE PRODUCT. LINCOLN SHOULD BEAR SOME OF THE COST, BUT HAS REFUSED TO DO SO. *TR

I DIDN'T PURCHASE THIS CAR TILL AFTER IT ALREADY HAD MORE THAN 100000 MILES SO I WAS UNAWARE OF THESE EXTENSIONS AND TIME FRAMES..I SPOKE WITH FORD/LINCOLN AND BASICALLY TOLD THE EXTENDED WARRANTY WOULD NOT COVER.I FEEL THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL NOT EXTENDED WARRANTY. *TR

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2003-01-01
  • VIN: 1LNHM86S73Y
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,STRUCTURE,ENGINE
  • Summary: CAR HESITATES ON ACCELERATION SINCE IT WAS NEW. TOOK THE CAR TO THE SELLING DEALER AND THEY COULD NOT FIND A PROBLEM. THE CONDITION GOT WORSE. WHEN TRAVELING DOWN THE HIGHWAY THE CAR STARTS BUCKING AND MISFIRING. TOOK THE CAR BACK TO THE SELLING LINCOLN DEALERSHIP (SESI LINCOLN MERCURY). THEY DEALERSHIP SAID THE DRIVERS DOOR NEEDED ADJUSTMENT. THIS MADE NO SENSE TO ME AND DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. THE CAR WENT OUT OF WARRANTY SHORTLY AFTER THAT. NOW CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON INTERMITTENTLY AND CAR HESITATES, BUCKS, STALLS AND RUNS ROUGH, MISFIRES AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS, AND MIL STARTS FLASHING. THE COWL PLASTIC PIECE HAS A POOR SEAL ON IT THAT LETS WATER ONTO THE ENGINE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. FORD ISSUED A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN THAT ADDRESSES THIS ISSUE AND FORD ADMITS THAT SEALS NEED TO BE REPLACED. THIS MAY NOT BE THE ONLY PROBLEM WITH THIS CARS ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, BUT IT IS A BIG PROBLEM. THIS IS A DESIGN DEFECT, NOTHING A CUSTOMER CAN DO TO PREVENT THIS. FORD SHOULD HAVE RECALLED THESE CARS AND FIXED THEM AT NO COST. THE FACT THAT THEIR DEALERSHIPS WERE HIDING THE REAL REASON FOR THIS MISFIRE AND NOT REPAIRING THE VEHICLES UNDER WARRANTY IS BREECH OF CONTRACT. FORD SHOULD BE FINED AND PUNISHED AND FORCED TO RECALL AND REPAIR ALL OF THESE CARS. I AM AN ASE MASTER MECHANIC. I TEACH AUTOMOTIVE SERVICE TECHNOLOGY AT THE COLLEGE LEVEL. THIS SHOULD NOT BE HAPPENING. THE CAR WAS GARAGE KEPT AND VERY WELL MAINTAINED, IT LOOKS NEW. I FOUND THAT # 6 CYLINDER HAD A P0306 COIL MISFIRE DTC. I HAD TO REMOVE THE INTAKE MANIFOLD JUST TO SEE THE COIL ON PLUG SET UP ON THE PASSENGER SIDE BANK OF ENGINE. TURNS OUT THERE IS POOR SEALING OF THE WINDSHIELD COWL AREA AND WATER RUNS DIRECTLY ONTO THE ENGINE AND ENGINE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. THE WATER SHORTS OUT THE COILS, SPARK PLUGS, COMPUTER AND ELECTRICAL SYSTEM. THE CAR IS NOT SAFE TO DRIVE. THIS CAN HAPPEN AT ANY TIME ESPECIALLY WHEN WET. *TR

POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2012-02-29
  • VIN: 1LNHM86S13Y
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: SHIFTS HARD, WHEN IN 20-30 MPH, IN GEAR 2 AND 3. AFTER DIAGNOSTIC, DEALER SAID IT MAY BE TRANSMISSION, BUT THEY HAVE TO TEAR IT APART. IF BANDS, TORQUE CONVERTER, OR SOLENOID PACK THEY HAVE TO TEAR DOWN AND REBUILD. HE DID SAY THAT ONE OF THE SOLENOIDS WENT OUTER IF BANDS WERE BENT, THEY WOULD HAVE TO REBUILD THE TRANSMISSION FOR A COST OF $2500 - $3500. I HAVE READ ALL OVER THE INTERNET WHERE PEOPLE ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT HARD SHIFTING AND TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS. IT SEEMS THAT THE PART WAS DEFECTIVE BY DESIGN. ONE PERSON SAID THAT THEY BOUGHT A KIT THAT FIXES THE DESIGN FLAW - 5RW MASTER SERVO BORE REPAIR KIT (FORD 5R55W/S/N). IT IS NOT MADE BY FORD, IT SEEMS THEY ARE TOO CHEAP TO FIX THE REAL PROBLEM. THEY SHOULD LISTEN TO PEOPLES CONCERNS. I AM ALSO GOING TO CALL THE 800 NUMBER FOR FORD LINCOLN AND SEND THEM A LETTER. WOULD USE WITH ANY TRANNY REBUILD. THE FINAL COST OF THE REPAIR IS NOW AT $4000.00. YIKES. *TR

IT RANG HER EARDRUM AND SCARED HER TO DEATH, THE CAR OF COURSE FILLED WITH DUST AND SHE PULLED OVER IMMEDIATELY AND CALLED ME. SHE WAS ONLY ABOUT A MILE AWAY FROM HOME SO I INSTRUCTED HER TO SLOWLY DRIVE IT HOME AND PARK IT. I HAVE BEEN READING ABOUT A LOT OF ISSUES WITH THE AIRBAGS IN THESE CARS. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS THING TO OCCUR, HAD SHE BEEN GOING FASTER, IN THE RAIN, BEEN ELDERLY, ECT. SHE COULD HAVE GOTTEN KILLED OR KILLED SOMEONE ELSE. I AM VERY UNHAPPY ABOUT THIS AND WE ARE BOTH SCARED TO DRIVE THE CAR ANYMORE IF SOMETHING LIKE THIS CAN HAPPEN. WHAT IF IT WAS THE STEERING WHEEL NEXT TIME? *TR

Negative 2003 Lincoln Ls car reviews

  1. Moses Koss 2024-11-28

The LS V8 is a fantastic car that offers a smooth ride and plenty of power to get you out of any sticky situations. The Alpine in-dash 6-disc CD changer provides a wonderful listening experience with a pleasant sound. The climate control system is also a standout feature, with dual zones for the front passengers. The leather seats with power controls are incredibly comfortable, making for an enjoyable driving experience. Overall, I highly recommend the LS and believe it would be a great purchase.

  2. Sofia Green 2024-05-07

Despite the numerous options that came with my 2001 LS V8 Sport, I have unfortunately experienced a multitude of issues with the car. These include non-start conditions, oil leaks, suspension problems, fuel filter issues, and the need for multiple computer updates, as well as radio replacements. Even with proper care, the suspension has begun to fade after only 27k miles, which is unacceptable for a vehicle of this class. It is clear that the quality of this car is subpar. However, I remain confident in my assessment and hope that Lincoln will take the necessary steps to improve their customer service and the quality of their vehicles.

  3. Weldon Hahn 2024-04-10

The 2003 Lincoln LS V8 Sport has had some reliability issues. After taking the car home from the dealer in 11/2009, all coils had to be replaced, but thankfully it was covered under the NY Lemon law. Although I managed to get 26,000 miles out of the last replacement, the coils appear to have failed again and the car is currently at a garage. Additionally, the car was built for people approximately 5

  4. Amparo Wilderman 2024-01-08

The buying experience was excellent. The staff were incredibly friendly, which is saying something as I've bought 4 new cars in 8 years. The vehicle handles excellently and is tighter than I thought possible for a sedan. Even driving at 90mph feels like 50. The only thing I would say is that it could use a bit more low-end power. Overall, I really like it.

Positive 2003 Lincoln Ls car reviews

  1. Rocio Predovic 2024-11-25

This car is definitely not docile, and it averages 20 mpg for mixed driving. The fit and finish inside as well as out are really nice. The perfect 50/50 front to rear balance almost makes you forget this is a rear wheel drive car, until you shift to sport mode, and it becomes a GT Mustang! While rear leg room can get cramped, driver comfort is excellent. The heated and cooled front seats are a really nice touch. This is one of the best riding cars I have ever owned, and it beats out the 5 series BMW I sold to get it.

We just bought a new LS and we're really liking it! It's super fast and handles extremely well. While the interior could be a little fancier, it's still very acceptable. This new model is a huge improvement over the first one we had (a 2000 LS Sport V6), although we didn't have any problems after the first month with that one. The new LS V8 Sport 2003 is definitely a winner!

All that I have owned has been Lincoln's except once I tried something new and got an Audi A4. Unfortunately, it was the worst car I had ever owned, nothing but problems. Needless to say, I now own another Lincoln!!!

This is a great car in every way - driving, handling, and looks. It's a Lincoln, enough said!

You have a really nice car that exudes just the right amount of class. The sound system is perfectly fitting for this car. It's great to hear that you love your 2003 even more than your 2001!
