The Lincoln LS is a four-door, five-passenger luxury sedan manufactured and marketed by Ford's Lincoln division over a single generation from 1999 until 2006. Introduced in June 1999 for the 2000 model year, the LS featured rear-wheel drive and near 50/50 weight distribution and was available with a V8 or V6, the latter initially offered with a manual transmission. The LS aimed to provide a blend of luxury and sport to attract a new generation of buyers to the Lincoln brand.

The LS shared the Ford DEW98 platform with the Jaguar S-Type and the Ford Thunderbird. Trim levels ranged from the base V6 model to the Special Edition V8 LSE trims in 2004, with revised front and rear fascia, taillights and foglights, and front grille.

LS models were manufactured at Ford's Wixom Assembly Plant until production ended on April 3, 2006, and the plant was idled as part of Ford's The Way Forward. Approximately 262,900 were manufactured, including 2,331 with manual transmissions and 1,500 LSE editions.

Common Lincoln Ls problems

The Lincoln LS is a luxury sports sedan that combines the athleticism of a European sports sedan with the elegance of an American luxury vehicle. While the Lincoln LS is generally considered a reliable car, some model years have potential problems. Here are some common issues reported by owners of the Lincoln LS:

  • Engine problems caused by bad timing chains: Some 2000 Lincoln LS owners have reported engine problems caused by bad timing chains. Over time, timing chains can become loose from normal operation, causing them to jump a tooth or break. A bad timing chain can knock the engine’s timing and lead to numerous issues, such as engine failure and decreased fuel economy. A bad timing tensioner can also be a factor in causing engine problems. Without the tensioner, timing chains can fail prematurely.
  • Electrical problems: Some Lincoln LS owners have reported electrical problems with their cars, including issues with the cooling fan and temperature sensor. These problems can be difficult to trace and diagnose, especially if they are intermittent.
  • Dual A/C problems: Some Lincoln LS owners have reported problems with the dual A/C system, where one side of the car may start to blow hot air while the other side continues to blow cold air.

If you experience any of these issues with your Lincoln LS, it is important to take your car to a professional mechanic for a complete diagnosis. Any information provided on this Website is for informational purposes only and is not intended to replace consultation with a professional mechanic. Lincoln Ls

Was the Lincoln LS reliable?

Users on RepairPal gave the Lincoln LS a 3.8 out of 5.0 reliability rating. Despite the above-average customer rating, the Lincoln LS has been known to fail on more than one occasion. If you're looking to buy a used model, you should expect some issues with the engine, transmission, HVAC, suspension, and interior.

How many miles can a Lincoln LS last?

It could last a long time(100k more) dependent on your stomach for occasional repair(some expensive). It appears you have done well so far. I agree with Andrew in that you could reach 300,000 miles if you keep up the maintenance, a few repairs and some luck.

Are Lincoln LS expensive to fix?

The average annual repair cost for a Lincoln is $879, which means it has average ownership costs.

Why did Lincoln discontinue the LS?

While larger and roomier, the LS was also less refined than its competitors in terms of interior quality and handling. Some reviewers lamented Lincoln's choice to discontinue the LS after just one generation rather than release a second generation to keep the LS nameplate competitive.

Found bad brake booster and sensor located on it (both unavailable from manufacturer), also found on line that to get light to stop flashing you have to take to dealer and have reprogrammed (nobody else has the ability) 4) Have constantly had problem with check engine light staying on and running rough, no power, and having to replace ignition coils 5) While wife was driving with no advance notice of any kind heading home on farm market road with no shoulder to pull off on transmission went out completely and stopped pulling 6) Rear control arm bushings go from ok to extremely bad causing back end to drift from side to side going down the highway in a blink of an eye 7) Right front sway bar link keeps wearing control arm and snapping stud off 8) Sunroof drain hoses constantly failing and allowing water to get to electrical components The list goes on but all you have to do is a online search of the LS sport with the 3.9 v-8 and see all the problems. I was in automotive for over 16 years and every vehicle generally has its know couple problems but this is way beyond that. There hasn't been any accidents or injuries but real close to it.

  1. Moses Koss 2024-11-28

    Vehicle year: 2003

The LS V8 is a fantastic car that offers a smooth ride and plenty of power to get you out of any sticky situations. The Alpine in-dash 6-disc CD changer provides a wonderful listening experience with a pleasant sound. The climate control system is also a standout feature, with dual zones for the front passengers. The leather seats with power controls are incredibly comfortable, making for an enjoyable driving experience. Overall, I highly recommend the LS and believe it would be a great purchase.

  2. Sam Lindgren 2024-11-16

    Vehicle year: 2000

I purchased my Lincoln a year and a half ago. Since then, I have had to replace 3 going on 4 window motors (each costing around $200), a new ball joint ($400), different valves ($200), and also kept up with scheduled maintenance. Unfortunately, despite the mechanic's opinion that Ford's lack of grease was the cause of the $400 expense, Ford refused to reimburse me. It's a little ironic that my car had been checked for that exact recall before I bought it. Overall, I have had some issues with my car and would not recommend it to those without extra money to spend. This has definitely made my first car buying experience a memorable one.

  3. Kolby Lynch 2024-10-15

    Vehicle year: 2000

This car is definitely eye-catching, but unfortunately, I had some issues with Ford's quality and design. The transmission failed and I had to replace a simple air/breathing hose, which was located under the intake manifold and fuel injectors. The cost of labour was quite high, but I was able to get it fixed. The brake system and suspension also needed attention, which was an additional expense. The interior had some problems too. Overall, my experience with this car has led me to boycott Ford. However, I hope that they can improve their quality and design in the future.

  4. Erling Muller 2024-10-15

    Vehicle year: 2000

At 20 years old, I have owned both a 1996 Dodge Ram and a Lincoln. While I initially thought the Lincoln was an upgrade, it has unfortunately been plagued with numerous issues. From both catalytic converters needing replacement within the first week of ownership, to poor gas mileage, a broken driver's door, and difficulty starting the engine, it has been a frustrating experience. Most recently, the power steering pump failed, rendering the car undrivable. As a result, I am now in the market for a new car. I strongly advise against purchasing this car, as it has depreciated significantly in value and has caused nothing but trouble. My personal experience has shown that it is not worth the investment.

  5. Weldon Hintz 2024-10-12

    Vehicle year: 2005

I've owned my LS for almost two years now, after upgrading from a Grand Marquis. While the car is priced in the upper 30s, I was not impressed with my experience. The front tires (Continentals) began severely cupping at 30,000 miles, and Lincoln would only cover 50% of the replacement cost with Michelins. Additionally, the gas mileage is significantly less than advertised, and there is no backseat room when the driver's seat is fully back. The trunk space is also quite shallow, only accommodating one large suitcase. On the plus side, the V6 provides plenty of power when passing, although it can sometimes lurch when backing up or starting forward. The front seat AC/Heat is a nice feature, and overall the AC system cools well. I had higher expectations for a Lincoln, but I appreciate the features that do work well.

    Vehicle year: 2003

This car is definitely not docile, and it averages 20 mpg for mixed driving. The fit and finish inside as well as out are really nice. The perfect 50/50 front to rear balance almost makes you forget this is a rear wheel drive car, until you shift to sport mode, and it becomes a GT Mustang! While rear leg room can get cramped, driver comfort is excellent. The heated and cooled front seats are a really nice touch. This is one of the best riding cars I have ever owned, and it beats out the 5 series BMW I sold to get it.

  2. Easter Kiehn 2024-11-20

    Vehicle year: 2004

The LS is an impressive car that offers plenty of power and exceptional comfort. It's no surprise that foreign luxury car owners often compliment my car. While the stereo could be improved, upgrading to the THX system is a great option to enhance your listening experience. Overall, the LS is a top-of-the-line vehicle that is sure to impress.

  3. Zackary Emard 2024-11-17

    Vehicle year: 2004

Welcome back! I hope you had a great trip. I wanted to check in and see how your new Lincoln LS performed. It sounds like the car handled well overall and was comfortable, which is great to hear. I understand that the requirement for 91 octane fuel may be a bit inconvenient, and the interior noise level was higher than expected. However, it's impressive that the LS performed well even under tough conditions like water over the highway. Overall, it sounds like you're satisfied with the car, and that's what matters most. Thanks for sharing your experience with me!

  4. Chris Gerhold 2024-11-15

    Vehicle year: 2006

I looked at several large sedans, including the ES and GS Lexus, BMW 5, M45 Infiniti, and even a Toyota Avalon. However, I ended up buying the Toyota Avalon after test driving it and falling in love with it. It was silver with a black leather interior and had a premium interior design. The LS was a great value for the money, with rear-wheel drive, balanced suspension, and almost 300hp for plenty of pickup. It also had plenty of headroom, hip and leg comfort for someone over 6 feet tall. The options included air and heated seats, moonroof, smart keys, and more. It was a complete package, except for navigation, but this was the last one on the lot.

  5. Frederik Adams 2024-11-12

    Vehicle year: 2006

Congratulations on your first luxury sedan! It sounds like you have had quite the variety of vehicles in the past, from sports cars to trucks. Based on your comparison to your 2006 Grand Prix, it seems like the LS is a very fun car to drive with a substantial and smooth power level from the small V8. The ride quality is also impressive, allowing for quick response in any situation and speed. While the interior is nice, it could benefit from more/better adjustments for the driver's seat. Overall, it sounds like you are enjoying your new ride!
