1990 Buick Reatta problems
The Buick Reatta is a low-volume transverse front-engine, front-wheel drive, two-door, two-seater grand tourer manufactured and marketed by Buick as a coupe (1988–1991) and convertible (1990–1991) — both featuring a 3.8 liter V6 engine and shortened version of the GM E platform, shared with the seventh generation Buick Riviera.
As Buick's first two-seater and its first convertible since the 1985 Riviera, the Reatta was manufactured in a highly specialized assembly program at the Reatta Craft Center (later known as the Lansing Craft Center) in Lansing, Michigan—achieving production of over 21,000 units in four years.
Overview
For the Reatta's manufacture at the Reatta Craft Center, specialized teams of workers assembled the car at a series of stations rather than on a conventional assembly line. After a team had completed their portion of the assembly, the car would be moved by robots to the next station. Paintwork was performed on site under subcontract to PPG Industries.
The Reatta used GM's transverse "Buick 3800" V6 with 165–170 hp (123–127 kW) and 210–220 lb·ft (285–298 N·m) of torque with the highest output in the last year of production. The car used a fully independent suspension, 4 wheel disc brakes with ABS, and front wheel drive. Top speed was electronically limited to 125 mph (201 km/h). The Reatta was rated at 18 mpg (13.1 L/100 km) in the city and 27 mpg (8.7 L/100 km) on the highway.
Intended as a halo car for Buick, production was projected at 20,000 Reattas annually, and was available while the Cadillac Allanté and Pontiac Fiero were also available. GM announced the end of production in early 1991.

Common 1990 Buick Reatta problems
The Buick Reatta, produced in the late 1980s and early 1990s, has been known for a few common problems based on complaints from owners. These issues include electrical problems, starting issues, and parasitic battery draw.
- Electrical problems:
One of the most common electrical issues in the Buick Reatta is related to the digital dash. The factory power supply to the digital dash can cause problems, leading to console panel lights going out occasionally.
- Starting issues:
A 1990 Buick Reatta owner reported a problem where the car fails to start on the first attempt 99% of the time when the car has sat overnight or the engine has been off for 2+ hours.
- Parasitic battery draw:
Another common issue in the Buick Reatta is a parasitic battery draw that fully discharges the battery overnight. This problem occurs even when the car engine is off, doors are shut, and the key is removed from the ignition. The battery is fully charged, and all connections appear to be solid, but there is a draw on the car battery that has it fully discharging overnight.
In conclusion, the Buick Reatta has several common problems, including electrical issues, starting problems, and parasitic battery draw. These issues can be frustrating for owners, but understanding the nature of these problems can help diagnose and address them effectively.

VISIBILITY PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2007-02-14
- Components: VISIBILITY
- Summary: THERE IS A SERIOUS DESIGN PROBLEM WITH THE 1990 BUICK REATTA. THE CAR HAS AN AUTOMATIC HEATING AND AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM. THIS SYSTEM WILL NOT ALLOW YOU TO TURN ON THE DEFROSTER TO CLEAR THE WINDSHIELD FROM FOGGING UP WHEN THE OUTSIDE TEMPERATURE IS ABOVE 39 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT IF THE CAR IS LOW ON FREON. I REALIZE THAT WINDSHIELDS CLEAR UP FASTER IF THE AIR IS DEHUMIDIFIED BY THE AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM. THE COMPUTER OF THIS SYSTEM WILL NOT ALLOW ANY AIR TO BE BLOWN ON THE WINDSHIELD IF THE FREON PRESSURE SWITCH DETECTS LOW FREON PRESSURE. THE SYSTEM SHOULD ALLOW AIR WARM AIR TO BE BLOWN ON THE WINDSHIELD TO DEFOG THE WINDSHIELD. IT IS AN UNSAFE DESIGN WHICH WILL NOT ALLOW YOU TO DEFOG YOUR WINDSHIELD BECAUSE OF A BAD FREON SWITCH OR BECAUSE OF LOW FREON. IN LOUISIANA THERE ARE MANY DAYS IN WHICH THE WINDSHIELD NEEDS DEFOGGING DUE TO HIGH HUMIDITY OR RAIN. *JB

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 1999-11-05
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
- Summary: I'M WRITING A SECOND TIME ABOUT THIS PROBLEM BECAUSE I READ THE COMPLAINTS SECTION OF YOUR WEBSITE AND FOUND TWO MORE INCIDENTS SUSPICIOUSLY SIMILAR TO MY OWN. I ALSO WROTE ABOUT IT ON THE BUICK REATTA DISCUSSION PAGE ON THE INTERNET AND ONE OTHER PERSON WROTE IN TO SAY HE EXPERIENCED THIS PROBLEM. SINCE THIS IS A CATASTROPIC FAILURE OF THE BRAKE SYSTEM WITH NO WARNING, I FIGURE YOU GUYS WOULD WANT TO KNOW ABOUT IT. I THINK THAT THIS IS NOT SPECIFIC TO REATTAS BUT WOULD AFFECT EVERY BUICK/GM VEHICLE WITH THE SAME ELECTRONICALLY CONTROLLED ABS SYSTEM. MY MECHANIC SAID THAT THE FAILURE WAS DUE TO A BAD SWITCH THAT CONTROLS THE ELECTRIC PUMP. THE PUMP BURNED OUT. THERE SHOULD'VE BEEN A DASHBOARD WARNING ABOUT THE PROBLEM WHEN ONLY THE SWITCH WAS BURNED OUT, BUT THE SENSOR READING THE SWITCH HAD ALSO FAILED!!! THAT LEFT ME WITH NO BRAKES AND NO WARNING. THERE WAS NO PHYSICAL CHANGE IN HOW THE BRAKES FELT UNTIL THE TOTAL FAILURE OF THE SYSTEM!!! SINCE THERE WERE ONLY ABOUT 4,000 REATTAS PRODUCED IN 1990, IT SEEMS TO ME THAT THE INCIDENCE OF THIS PROBLEM IS WAY TOO HIGH TO BE IGNORED. IF OTHER BUICKS AND GM VEHICLES HAVE THE SAME SYSTEM, YOU ARE LOOKING AT A POTENTIALLY HUGE PROBLEM OUT THERE. PLEASE DO SOMETHING. *AK
SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 1999-11-09
- VIN: 1G4EC13C4LB
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
- Summary: I AM REPORTING THIS BECAUSE APPARENTLY THE BRAKE SYSTEM CAN FAIL IN THESE CARS WITH NO WARNING. THE MECHANIC THINKS THAT A SWITCH BURNED OUT, WHICH LET THE ELECTRIC PUMP RUN CONTINUOUSLY UNTIL IT BURNED OUT. THERE'S A SENSOR THAT'S SUPPOSED TO NOTIFY THE DRIVER OF THIS PROBLEM, BUT THE SENSOR IN MY VEHICLE IS APPARENTLY NON-OPERATIVE. THERE WAS NO CHANGE IN HOW THE BRAKES "FELT" WHEN APPLIED UNTIL THE MOMENT THEY SIMPLY FAILED. THE LACK OF A SENSOR HAS LED TO AN EXTREMELY COSTLY REPAIR (ESTIMATED AT $2000 PARTS & LABOR). MORE IMPORTANTLY, IT ALLOWED A SITUATION WHEREIN THE BRAKES COULD FAIL WITH NO DASHBOARD WARNING TO THE DRIVER. I TOOK A COMPLETE LOSS ON THIS CAR IN TRADING IT IN. I WAS PLANNING TO SELL IT ANYWAY, BUT I DIDN'T HAVE THE CASH TO FIX THIS HUGE PROBLEM, SO I JUST TRADED IT TO THE DEALER UNREPAIRED. BECAUSE OF THE NON-OPERATIVE BRAKES, I RECEIVED $800 FOR A CAR WITH A BLUE BOOK VALUE OF AROUND $6,000. I WANT BUICK MOTOR COMPANY TO BE AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM AND MAKE SURE EVERY REATTA ON THE ROAD DOESN'T HAVE A SIMILARLY FAULTY SENSOR THAT COULD LET THESE OTHER SYSTEMS' FAILURES GO UNDETECTED. *AK

I have rebuilt almost the entire car. The only thing left to do is the interior seats and some simple external fixes. This car has a new engine, a 1990 Buick replacement engine, a new transmission, air conditioning, and its original white paint with white trim, which was a special order. It's a fun car to drive, with a new top and great tires. I absolutely love it!

Great birthday present! It sounds like you're having a lot of fun driving it. The acceleration seems decent and the handling is excellent. It's great to hear that you're getting lots of looks and positive comments when you're out and about. Even though it's a manual process, it's easy to drop the top. It's good to know that you've had the pop-up headlights repaired, and the power window on the driver's side just needs a replacement. Currently, she has 54k miles on her.

Driving the Buick Reatta was an amazing experience that I never had with any other car. I felt so much joy and excitement showing off this beautiful red sports car. I felt like a special person driving my Reatta! Whenever Red needed to be fixed, I was always there for her. Maintenance and oil changes were very important to me. My Reatta was special to me and I still value her. Whenever something went wrong, I tried my best to get her fixed. As the years went by, it became frustrating not being able to maintain her upkeep. The parts for Red were very hard to locate or find at the automotive shop as well as the dealers. Now I feel helpless trying to maintain Red to keep her up and running.

I've owned my convertible for three years now and it's been an absolute joy to drive. It's incredibly comfortable and spacious, with a generously sized trunk. Plus, it's fully loaded with all the latest features. I was looking for a reliable collector car that offered both comfort and luxury, and this car has exceeded my expectations. I drive it every day without any issues, and finding parts has never been a problem. Unlike some of my friends who own older collector cars that require constant maintenance, I get to spend more time enjoying my car than fixing it. It's been a great investment and I couldn't be happier with my purchase!

You have a really nice car! It sounds like it's a lot of fun to drive, especially with that 165hp 3.8L V6 and 210lb torque. Overall, it seems like a really enjoyable car to have.
