Common 2001 Volkswagen Eurovan problems

The Volkswagen Eurovan, specifically the 2001 model, has been known to have several common problems based on complaints from car owners. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues:

  1. Transmission Issues: The most common problem with the 2001 Volkswagen Eurovan Camper is the transmission. This issue typically arises due to overloading the van, which puts stress on the transmission, causing it to malfunction. To avoid this problem, it is essential to ensure that the van is not overloaded, and there are no leaks from the transmission pan. The gear shifting should also be smooth.
  2. Air Conditioning and Air Compressor Failure: Another common problem with the 2001 Volkswagen Eurovan is the failure of the air conditioning and air compressors. This issue can result in poor running of the van, making it uncomfortable for the passengers during hot weather.
  3. Misfiring Ignitions: Some 2001 Volkswagen Eurovan owners have reported misfiring ignitions, which can cause the van to run poorly. This problem can be caused by various factors, including worn-out spark plugs, faulty ignition coils, or a malfunctioning crankshaft position sensor.
  4. Electrical Issues: The 2001 Volkswagen Eurovan also faces minor electrical issues with the electrical portion of the ignition switch. These issues can cause the van to have starting problems or intermittent electrical failures.
  5. Cooling System Problems: The cooling system of the 2001 Volkswagen Eurovan is prone to failure due to aging plastic components. This issue can cause the van to overheat, leading to engine damage.
  6. Timing Chain Issues: The timing chain of the 2001 Volkswagen Eurovan can also cause problems, especially if the van has clocked higher miles. This issue is caused by a manufacturing fault with the sprocket, which can cause the chain to move out of time, leading to an error code display.
  7. Clutch Shuddering: If the clutch of the 2001 Volkswagen Eurovan starts to shudder, it could mean that the clutch plate is bending, preventing the pressure plate from being released. This problem is usually caused by heat stress.
  8. Check Engine Light Issues: The check engine light of the 2001 Volkswagen Eurovan may not illuminate when there is a problem with the engine due to a communication issue with the engine control module (ECM). This issue can cause the ECM to fail to communicate with the sensors and other important components, leading to engine problems.

In conclusion, the 2001 Volkswagen Eurovan has several common problems that car owners have reported. These issues range from transmission and electrical problems to cooling system and engine issues. It is essential to address these problems promptly to avoid further damage to the van and ensure the safety of the passengers.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-06-23
  • VIN: WV3AB47021H
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: TRAVELING WITH TWO OTHER RIALTA MOTOR HOMES VISITING JOSHIA TREE NP WHEN I HEARD A BANGING SOUND LIKE SOMETHING HITTING UNDER MY RIALTA. I IMMEDIATELY NOTED AN INCREASE IN WATER TEMPERATURE AND THEN THE RED WARNING LIGHT CAME ON THE DASH. I PULLED TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, OPENED THE HOOD, BUT COULD NOT SEE A BUSTED HOSE, BUT THERE WAS ANTIFREEZE ON THE GROUND. I HAD A SPARE GALLON WITH ME AND FILLED THE RESERVOIR TO RECOMMENDED LEVEL, DROVE ABOUT 3-4 MILES AND HAD TO REPEAT PROCEDURE. AGAIN I WENT ABOUT 3-4 MILES AND HAD TO USE WATER THIS TIME. A PARK RANGER GAVE ME THE NAME OF A REPAIR SHOP IN TWENTYNINE, PALMS WHICH WAS ABOUT 3 MILES AWAY. I REFILLED THE RESERVOIR WITH WATER TO GET ME TO THE SHOP. UPON INSPECTION, A HOLE WAS FOUND IN THE RADIATOR. WHEN THE COOLING SYSTEM WAS DISMANTLED, ONE COOLING FAN HAD COMPLETELY DISINTEGRATED AND THERE WAS A HOLE IN THE SHROUD APPARENTLY WHERE PART OF THE FAN BRACKET THAT HAD BROKEN OFF WENT THROUGH THE SHROUD INTO THE RADIATOR. PARTS HAVE BEEN ORDERED TO REPLACE THE RADIATOR, SHROUD, BRACKET AND ONE NEW FAN. THE OTHER FAN HAS A CHIP OUT OF ONE BLADE BUT IS NOT BROKEN. A FRIEND TOLD ME OF A RECENT RECALL FROM VW (ASSIGNED RECALL NO. 04V-107) REGARDING FAILURE OF THE ENGINE COOLING FANS, WHICH MAY FRACTURE AND BREAK APART. I HAVE ALSO NOTED THAT THE BRACKET PARTS NUMBER HAS CHANGED FROM 7D0-121-206A TO A 7D0-121-206D. ONE CAN DEFINITELY SEE THE DIFFERENCE IN THE TWO, WITH THE LATER BEING REDESIGNED AND REINFORCED. I PURCHASED THE RIALTA IN APRIL OF 2001. THE BRACKET, SHROUD AND RADIATOR ARE AVAILABLE, BUT I PREFER NOT TO CARRY THE RADIATOR WITH ME DUE TO SPACE CONSTRAINTS AND WEIGHT. I AM TRAVELING FOR AT LEAST TWO MORE MONTHS. PLEASE NOTE: THIS IA WINNEBAGO RIALTA ON A VOLKSWAGEN ENGINE. THE REPAIR SHOP MAY RETAIN THE RADIATOR IF NECESSARY. BAILEY'S AUTO REPAIR AND TOWING. • Date Of Incident: 2004-05-01
  • VIN: WV2EB47091H
  • Components: SUSPENSION,SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC,TIRES
  • Summary: I PURCHASED, NEW, A 2001 VW EUROVAN WINNEBAGO CAMPER. IN 31,000 MILES, THE VEHICLE IS NOW ON ITS' THIRD SET OF BRAKES. MY LAST VEHICLE, A 1992 MAZDA NAVAJO; I FINALLY REPLACED BRAKES AT APPROXIMATELY 72,000 MILES. MY DRIVING IS NOT AN ISSUE WITH THE VW. EACH SET OF CAMPER BRAKES COSTS, RIGHT AT $1,500.00. VW PICKED-UP THE COST OF BRAKE SET #2 AT 17,000 MILES. AN AWA, AS THEY ARE ONLY WARRANTEED FOR 12,000 MILES. RIDICULOUS, TO BE SURE. WE HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO WARNING THAT THE BRAKES ARE "GOING OUT". ONCE THE WARNING LIGHT COMES ON - YOU MUST REPLACE THE ENTIRE BRAKE SYSTEM, NOT JUST PADS. AT 3 SETS IN 31,000 MILES; BRAKES ALONE ARE COSTING $150.00 FOR EVERY 1,000 MILES DRIVEN. ALSO, THIS VEHICLE HAS GONE THROUGH ELEVEN TIRES IN THIS SAME TIME FRAME, DUE TO INAPPROPRIATE SHOCKS (NOT HEAVY DUTY), AND THE COLLAPSE OF A MAJOR SPRING WHICH SUPPORTS THE CAMPER IN THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE ON THE LEFT SIDE. I HAVE SPOKEN TO MANY OTHER VW CAMPER OWNERS WITH 2001 MODELS AND THEY ARE EXPERIENCING THE SAME THINGS WITH BRAKES AND TIRES. VW AND WINNEBAGO DO NOT CARE AND WILL NOT LOWER THE PRICE OF THEIR BRAKE SYSTEMS, NOR EVEN PROVIDE THE PART NUMBERS FOR ANY HEAVY DUTY SHOCKS THAT CAN BE PUT ON THIS VEHICLE, NOT ABSORB THE COSTS OF THE VERY EXPENSIVE AND UNIQUE TIRE THAT MUST BE PUT ON THIS VEHICLE DUE TO THE LOAD BEARING OF THE CAMPER PORTION. NO BRAKES SHOULD COST THIS MUCH, NO VEHICLE SHOULD GO THROUGH 11 TIRES IN 31,000 MILES. PLEASE HELP.*AK

  • Summary: WE ARE DEEPLY DISAPPOINTED IN VWS PRACTICE REGARDING THE RECALL OF IGNITION COIL FAILURES ON THE 2001 VW EUROVAN. IT BELIES THEIR POLICY AS STATED ON THE INTERNET THAT THEY NOTIFY OWNERS OF THE PROBLEM, HAVE SUFFICIENT PARTS IN DEALERSHIPS, AND OFFER ALTERNATIVE TRANSPORTATION AT NO COST. INDEED OWNERS SHOULD BE ALERTED OF POTENTIAL FAILURES AND VW SHOULD HAVE PLENTY OF PARTS ON HAND TO FIX THE PROBLEM. TO DATE WE HAVE NOT RECEIVED ANY NOTIFICATION FROM VW OF AMERICA. WE DISCOVERED THE PROBLEM WHEN THE ENGINE MALFUNCTION INDICATOR LIT UP. FORTUNATELY FOR US, THE PROBLEM DID NOT OCCUR UNTIL THE TAIL END OF A 10,000-MILE JOURNEY ACROSS THE U.S. AND CANADA. ACCORDING TO THE LOCAL VW DEALER, COMMUNITY VW OF SANTA MARIA, THE REPAIR PARTS ORDERED ON DECEMBER 8 WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE FOR ANOTHER THREE WEEKS. THE OTHER LOCAL DEALER, KIMBALL MOTORS OF SAN LUIS OBISPO, IS ALSO UNABLE TO GET THE PARTS ANY FASTER. YESTERDAY, DECEMBER 18, OUR EUROVAN FAILED TO START. THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP HAS NOT OFFERED ANY ALTERNATIVE TRANSPORTATION. SO WE WILL BE STRANDED FOR AT LEAST THREE WEEKS. WE CAN ONLY HOPE THOSE REPAIR PARTS WILL BE DELIVERED ON SCHEDULE. EITHER VW SHOULD LIVE UP TO THEIR STATED COMMITMENT BY PROVIDING REPAIR PARTS AND ALTERNATIVE TRANSPORTATION NOW OR RESTATE THE POLICY TO MATCH THEIR ACTIONS OF LETTING THE BUYER BEWARE. Negative 2001 Volkswagen Eurovan car reviews

  1. Diego Deckow 2025-01-07

We purchased our 2001 Eurovan in 2006 with 70k miles and have been enjoying it ever since. Despite having about 130k miles on it now, we have not experienced any major issues. While it is true that maintenance can cost around $1500 per year, we have found it to be a reliable vehicle overall. It is worth noting that some Eurovans are known to have transmission issues between 40k-70k miles, but we have not experienced this problem ourselves. Over the past 9 years, our van has taken us on many memorable camping trips and even to Burning Man several times. Although the engine runs a bit rougher than it used to, it is still a comfortable and spacious van to drive. While we have noticed some wear and tear over the years, we have put our van through a lot - from camping trips to having kids - and it has held up remarkably well. Although we may need to part ways with it soon, we will always cherish the memories we have made with our trusty Eurovan.

  2. Harley Barton 2024-01-13

I have experienced several issues with this van, including the transmission, air compressor, front steering, wiper motors, engine computer sensors, and poor steering alignment resulting in bad tires. However, I have decided to move on from this vehicle and will not be purchasing another VW product. It is important to note that these are my personal experiences and opinions.

Positive 2001 Volkswagen Eurovan car reviews

  1. Milton Schimmel 2025-01-06

I see that you have had VW vans in the past. That's great! I can understand why you liked them for a bunch of reasons. The '01 Eurovan is particularly roomy and very comfortable, even when traveling with a large family of seven. As you mentioned, the Volkswagen Eurovan is decidedly different from other vans. It has a unique boxy shape and a significantly higher driving position. Additionally, it offers some really cool options, such as rear-facing second-row seats, pull-out beds, window curtains, and a camper body. All of these features, along with a few peace signs, make this van a joy to own.

  2. Roosevelt Eichmann 2025-01-05

Hi there! I'm so glad to hear that you've had such a positive experience with your Eurovans and Vanagons! From what you've said, it sounds like the VR6 is the best driving car of them all. It's great to hear that it's comfortable for long drives and perfect for family trips to the cottage. I love that it's the most popular car at rainy day soccer games - it sounds like the perfect vehicle for a fun family day out! It's also great to hear that maintenance has been reasonable and that you've found experienced VW mechanics to help you out. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

  3. Ford Towne 2024-11-27

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my Eurovan. I purchased it used, when it was less than a year old and had about 11000 miles on it. Luckily, it was still under warranty and I haven't had any mechanical issues with it, except for a driveline seal that was replaced under warranty. I always take it to University VW in Albuquerque for servicing, and they've been great. Personally, I find it very comfortable to drive long distances, but my wife finds the seats a bit too tall (seat to floor) for sustained comfort. The VR6 provides fair acceleration, and we get about 20 mpg in terms of fuel economy. Additionally, the E'van is capable of pulling a light trailer, which is a great bonus. Let me know if you have any questions or if there's anything else I can help with!

  4. Alejandrin Williamson 2024-11-22

This is the second VW Van we've owned and we absolutely love it! It's incredibly versatile and comfortable, with so many well thought out features that make it hard to describe all the good things VW built into this model. We plan on keeping this van for many years to come.

  5. Dario Kling 2024-10-02

I love my VW Eurovan! However, after 37000 miles, I started experiencing some major and minor breakdowns which were quite expensive. Unfortunately, I did not receive any help or support from Volkswagen. I might have to consider going back to American made. It's a shame because it's a great family van.
