2006 Dodge Viper problems
The Dodge Viper is a sports car that was manufactured by Dodge (by SRT for 2013 and 2014), a division of American car manufacturer FCA US LLC from 1992 until 2017, having taken a brief hiatus in 2007, and from 2010 to 2012. Production of the two-seat sports car began at New Mack Assembly Plant in 1991 and moved to Conner Avenue Assembly Plant in October 1995.
Although Chrysler considered ending production because of serious financial problems, on September 14, 2010, then-chief executive Sergio Marchionne announced and previewed a new model of the Viper for 2012. In 2014, the Viper was named number 10 on the "Most American Cars" list, meaning 75% or more of its parts are manufactured in the U.S. The Viper was eventually discontinued in 2017 after approximately 32,000 were produced over the 26 years of production.
The 0-60 mph (97 km/h) time on a Viper varies from around 3.5 to 4.5 seconds. Top speed ranges from 160 mph (260 km/h) to over 200 mph (320 km/h), depending on variant and year.

Common 2006 Dodge Viper problems
Based on complaints from owners of the 2006 Dodge Viper, several common problems have been reported:
- Clicking or Popping Noise from Clutch or Transmission: Another complaint from owners is a clicking or popping noise coming from the clutch or transmission. This issue is often caused by a misalignment between the rear axle and the driveline. Repairs usually involve installing matched hubs and yokes on the rear axle. The cost of fixing this problem depends on the extent of the damage and any additional issues it may have caused.
- Water Leakage Between Top and Side Curtains: Owners have reported water leakage between the top and side curtains as a common problem with the Dodge Viper. This issue can be inconvenient, especially during rainy weather. The solution involves installing updated right- and left-side rails to prevent water from seeping through. While this problem is relatively simple to fix, it's essential for potential buyers to be aware of it and ensure the side rails are updated and in good condition to prevent water damage.
These common problems with the 2006 Dodge Viper can impact the driving experience and maintenance costs, highlighting the importance of thorough inspections before purchasing a used Viper to address these issues promptly.

- Summary: THERE ARE TWO RECALLS ON THIS VEHICLE, R13 AND VE4 BUT I HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO GET THESE COMPLETED BECAUSE THE DEALER AND DODGE STATE THAT THEY DO NOT HAVE THE PARTS. THIS HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR WELL OVER 1 YEAR. I HAVE CALLED MANY TIMES TO BOTH THE DEALER AND DODGE BUT ALL I GET IS WE HAVE NO ESTIMATED TIME FOR THESE PARTS. I DO NOT FEEL COMFORTABLE DRIVING THE CAR WITHOUT THESE TWO RECALLS BEING COMPLETED. IS THERE ANYTHING YOU CAN TO DO HELP IN GETTING THIS TWO RECALLS COMPLETED? THANK YOU
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-08-12
- VIN: 1B3JZ65Z66V
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I GOT A RECALL NOTICE BUT CANNOT FIND A DEALERSHIP WITHIN A REASONABLE DISTANCE THAT IS WILLING TO PERFORM THE RECALL WORK
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2016-01-27
- VIN: 1B3JZ65Z36V
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2006 DODGE VIPER ROADSTER. THE CONTACT STATED THAT WHILE DRIVING AT 55 MPH, THE MULTI-FUNCTION SWITCH, THE TURNING SIGNALS AND THE HEADLIGHTS FAILED WHICH REDUCED VISIBILITY SIGNIFICANTLY. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT DIAGNOSED OR REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS 62,000.
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-07-02
- VIN: 1B3JZ69Z16V
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: DRIVER SIDE DOOR FAILED TO OPEN WHEN BATTERY POWER WAS OUT. DOOR WAS OPENED TO INVESTIGATE AND IT WAS DISCOVERED THAT THE CABLE TO THE DOOR LATCH MECHANISM HAD A FATIGUE FAILURE AT THE CABLE TO HANDLE JUNCTION. WHEN THIS CONDITION OCCURS THERE IS NOTHING THAT ALLOWS ONE TO EXIT THE VEHICLE. THIS IS NOT A CASE OF MISUSE BUT OF A POOR DESIGN. IN A SERIOUS ACCIDENT WHERE BATTERY POWER IS LOST THE AFFECTED DOOR CAN NOT BE OPENED. THIS FAILURE IS MOST LIKELY TO BE THE DRIVER DOOR AS IT IS MOST FREQUENTLY USED. ANY FOLLOW-UP INVESTIGATION OF TRAPPED OCCUPANTS IS UNLIKELY TO DISCOVER THIS PARTICULARLY IF A FIRE MELTS THE DOOR COMPONENTS. I SUSPECT THAT THE DOOR MECHANISM IS LIKELY COMMON TO MANY OTHER MAKES AND MODELS AND THUS FAR MORE IMPORTANT FOR INVESTIGATION.
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-09-07
- VIN: 1B3JZ69Z16V
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: I STARTED HEARING A CLUNK THAT SEEMED TO COME FROM THE PASSENGER SIDE REAR WHEEL WELL WHEN STARTING FROM A STOP. I PULLED ALL 4 TIRES OFF TO GREASE THE CAR. ON THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE, IT APPEARS THAT THE RUBBER BOOT ON THE SUSPENSION KNUCKLE IS LEAKING AND MAY BE TORN. I CAN'T BE SURE AT THIS TIME IF THE SUSPENSION KNUCKLE IS DAMAGED. ALTHOUGH MY VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY, THE MILEAGE IS VERY LOW (10,300 MILES). I STARTED TO RESEARCH ON THE INTERNET FOR ANY KNOWN ISSUES AND CAME ACROSS THE NHTSA INVESTIGATION ON VIPER SUSPENSION. I WILL HAVE TO HAVE MY VEHICLE INSPECTED TO GET A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE PROBLEM I HAVE. I DO NOT KNOW IF THE KNUCKLE IS DAMAGED OR IF THE ONLY ISSUE IS THE LEAKING RUBBER BOOT ON THE KNUCKLE. I ALSO UNDERSTAND THAT YOUR & CHRYSLERS FINDINGS INDICATED THAT KNUCKLE DAMAGE REPORTED IN 2013 WERE DEEMED TO BE CAUSED BY ACCIDENTS, AND THEREFORE THE INVESTIGATION WAS CLOSED. MY VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT. IS THERE ANY INTEREST FROM THE NHTSA POINT OF VIEW TO FOLLOW MY INCIDENT? P.S. I PURCHASED MY VEHICLE IN LAS VEGAS. I HAVE A RESIDENCE IN LAS VEGAS ALTHOUGH I AM A CANADIAN CITIZEN. *TR

Congratulations on your new Viper Coupe! It's great to hear that you're enjoying the car and its amazing handling. It's understandable that you miss the rear-exit exhaust of your Corvette, but the Viper's side pipes are still impressive. The adjustable pedals and natural fit of the Viper are definitely a plus. It's clear that you have a passion for true sports cars and the Viper is a great choice. Enjoy the ride!

Repeat buyers can say it all! This is my second Viper - I owned the 1999 and now the 2004. The body style took a little while to accept, but I am happier than ever with my new Viper. Improvements on the interior have helped for female drivers. I love the new exhaust, and you will be a big fish in a little pond when you zoom by your neighbors. Great all the way!

My experience with this car was great. It was beautiful, handled well, and had great speed. The quality of this car was perfect.

This is my second Viper. I had a 2002, the older body style convertible RT/10. Although I loved the 2002, I must say that the new Viper SRT/10 has some significant improvements, particularly in the exterior design and the interior. The performance, as with the 2002, is absolutely spine-tingling!

Well, my experience with this car is truly amazing. I have never driven a car like this before. I am used to cars that go up to 80 tops, but this car goes nice and fast. In my opinion, this car is the best.

The SRT-10 may not be as visually striking as its predecessors, the RT/10 or GTS models, but it still embodies Bob Lutz's original vision: a street-legal race car that can hold its own on the track, all for under six figures. And even though it wasn't specifically built for it, achieving quarter-mile times in the 11's straight off the shelf is quite impressive!

In my experience owning several sports cars, I have found the Dodge Viper to be one of the least reliable and most uncomfortable rides. However, I appreciate that others may have different opinions. Personally, I would not choose to own a Dodge Viper again, unless it was given to me as a gift.

I see that you purchased this car used at a local Ferrari Dealership. It's definitely a fast car, but with gas prices continuing to rise and the requirement for premium gas, I understand your concerns about how long you'll be able to keep it. The SRT-10 does tend to drink up the gas. However, it's still an impressive vehicle. While comfort may not be the best during long rides and handling could use some improvement, it's still a thrilling ride.
