2022 Kia K5 problems
The Kia K5, formerly known as the Kia Optima (Korean: 기아 옵티마), is a mid-size car manufactured by Kia since 2000 and marketed globally through various nameplates. First generation cars were mostly marketed as the Optima, although the Kia Magentis name was used in Europe and Canada when sales began there in 2002. For the second-generation models, Kia used the Kia Lotze and Kia K5 name for the South Korean market, and the Magentis name globally, except in the United States, Canada, Malaysia and the Middle East, where the Optima name was retained until the 2021 model year. The K5 name is used for all markets since the introduction of the fifth generation in 2019.
First generation (MS; 2000)
From 2000–2005, Optimas were a rebadged variant of the Hyundai Sonata, differing from the Sonata only in minor exterior styling details and equipment content. It was first shown in South Korea in July 2000 and was the first product of the Kia-Hyundai platform integration plan.
In Australia, the Optima was introduced in May 2001, offered only with a 2.5 L V6 engine, and choice of manual or automatic transmission. The updated Optima was offered with a new 2.7 L engine, 4-speed automatic (the manual was dropped), and features such as full leather interior and alloy wheels were made standard. Thanks in part to better marketing, sales increased to 41,289 units in 2005, an all-time high. The Optima was sold until 2006, when it was replaced by the Magentis.

Common 2022 Kia K5 problems
The Kia K5, introduced as the successor to the Kia Optima, has been praised for its combination of style, performance, and technology. However, it is crucial for potential buyers to consider the reliability of different model years before making a purchase. Here are some common problems reported by owners of the 2022 Kia K5:
- Electrical System Problems: Electrical system issues have been reported in the 2021 Kia K5, with one instance leading to a vehicle fire. Other issues include losing a wireless CarPlay connection, warning lights on the instrument panel, and faulty sensors affecting tire pressure, headlights, and the speedometer.
- Airbag Problems: Airbag problems have also been reported in the 2021 Kia K5, with three instances of airbags not deploying during collisions, leading to injuries. This non-deployment issue differs from the recall issue related to airbags.
- Engine Problems: Engine problems have been reported in the 2021 Kia K5, including engine bay noise due to the engine cover being off, fender damage from rubbing the wheel/tire, and the hanging fog light housing. Another complaint concerns the cooling system, where antifreeze vapor seeps into the engine area when the vehicle is turned off, causing a strong coolant smell.
- In-Car Electronics: Owners of the 2022 Kia K5 have reported issues with the infotainment system, including the screen going into reboot mode, making it impossible to access the navigation system. This problem can also cause the screen to go into a circular rotation, leading to the loss of the screen and navigation map displays.
These issues, especially the steering problems, make the 2021 and 2022 model years of the Kia K5 the worst Kia K5 years to avoid. Potential buyers should be aware of these common problems and consider them when making a decision.

SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-11-01
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 5XXG64J24NG
- Components: SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: My 2022 Kia K5 GT-Line was involved in a hit and run accident while my vehicle was unattended and legally parked on the street. The repairs for this vehicle were $11,500+ The entirety of the left side of the car was mauled. Very key integral parts were involved and I have had alignment issues, A/C and heating issues, electrical problems including safety features (lane change, etc) and heavy suspension damage. It took almost 5 months to fix everything on my car insurance company/shop; mostly using aftermarket parts to save money. Loved the “State of condition must be repaired to a pre-accident condition” yet the insurance gets away with using after market parts! As of, 08/29/2024, my vehicle is currently at the Kia dealership for o2 sensor recall, as well as my melted blower motor, melted a/c wiring harness kit, foul stench coming from A/C vents when recirculating switched into fresh air mode. The smell is foul and causing upper respiratory issues for me. The seat has become toxic smelling from mildew/rust. I’ve been trying to address all of the above issues. The shop believes once they fix the A/C blower motor/wiring harness they can try to diagnose the fumes coming from the vents. Most of the repairs are on back order and without a date (2weeks-2months+) I am without a vehicle for my job and my insurance doesn’t cover rental reimbursement.
SEATS,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-19
- VIN: 5XXG14J2XNG
- Components: SEATS,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: A couple of days before taking my vehicle to get serviced, I started noticing some concerning factors about an issue going on with the vehicles fuel system. When putting fuel in my car, the gas odometer wouldn't match with what the car was marking the gas miles to be. It would fluctuate throughout the day, in the morning it would mark 174 miles of fuel and in the afternoon it would somehow say I had 215 miles of fuel when I never added more fuel to my call. Also when I opened the gas tank I saw white smoke come out from the tank. My back seat also popped out of the clips that kept it in place. It was very apparent while doing research online of the issues I was going through, that other have similar issues, all leading to the fuel tank expanding. The service center at my local Kia claimed their not 1 but 2 recalls on the vehicles and unfortunately the sensor in the fuel tank needed an update, but because my gas tank expanded while they checked it out, they said they couldn't simply update the sensor as my whole fuel system had to be redone. I have tried to reach out to Kia since I do not have a vehicle to commute to work and it is essential I get the issue resolved with my car. I don't know how long this process will take either since no one provides clear time frames or how the process will go. I am pretty much out of a car for over 6 days and still don't know if it can be repaired or what can be done with my vehicle in the condition it is in.

- Summary: I have a 2022 Kia K5 GT-Line. My problem started with what I thought was a AC problem. My car was still in warranty. (Under 60,000 miles). They change the blower motor. After it was fixed the next day my AC went out again. I have taken my car in 4 times about the same problem. Just for them to tell me it’s a fuse problem where the fuse box is overheating and the whole fuse box is melting and needs to be repaired which I was told is almost $2000 to be repaired and it is not covered under the warranty. I know of 5 other people that’s having the same problem. I wouldn’t expect this to happen to an 2 year old car.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-12
- VIN: 5XXG64J2XNG
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: On June 12, 2024, the driver heard a loud pop/thump coming from the rear of the vehicle. The driver looked back to inspect the vehicle and noticed that the back seats had lifted his child and car seat up from the proper seating position. Upon further inspection, the driver had noticed a large bulge under the rear seats that was releasing a lot of heat and the smell of gas was throughout the cabin of the vehicle. On the way home at the time of the event the driver stopped to get the gas and when opening the gas cap noticed a violent pressure release, similar to opening a shaken-up soda. The driver quickly got to a safe location as the heat in the passenger cabin started to rise. The driver immediately notified the Kia Service Dept. and the vehicle was towed to the Kia service department on June 13, 2024. On June 18, 2024, the driver was told that the current issue was due to a gas tank expansion issue and that the gas tank expanded causing the metal frame to bend, and that the vehicle may not be repairable since the metal frame had been bent. The service department stating the vehicle is no longer safe to drive and that the issue would be escalated to their consumer affairs team. It is July 29, 2024, and there has been no word of Kia or any representative thereof that has reached out to remedy this issue. The dealer has denied a temporary replacement vehicle and/or rental car replacement for the time being. Where the driver and child were at extreme risk of a potential fatality or extreme injury, It would be expected that the matter be handled a little more expeditiously. Hoping to get this matter resolved!

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-02
- VIN: 5XXG64J23NG
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE
- Summary: Instrumental Cluster has went completely out. The only light that’s on is the seatbelt light on my 2022 Kia K5. That’s is strange for a brand new car unless there could be a recall which is for the late 2022 / 2023 model cars. I contacted every Kia dealership near me and would not tell me what the issue could be that I needed to bring it in. The amount just to do a diagnostic was not in my budget but finding out later that there are recalls for this exact reason, does not sit well with me. I contacted a service manager in Sherwood AR where I lurched my vehicle to see if its cover under warranty and he has not called back. It’s not customer service satisfying that neither techs were even willing to tell me why it just magically stopped working on a brand new car. I put my life at risk driving my kids and myself to work, I couldn’t see how fast I was going, don’t know how much gas I have in my car, signal light comes on but no sound… NOTHING. Something has to be done and seeing that other Kia’s has had this same issue does not sit well with me and a Kia owner.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-20
- VIN: 5XXG34J29NG
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: I was experiencing problems with my air conditioning not staying on and the blower would not come on at all. It would come on sometimes but it stop cooling and sometimes it wouldn’t come on. I reported the problem in November 2023 and was told that the something in the wiring harness had burnt out and the wiring harness had to be replaced. Their earliest available service appointment was in February 5, 2024. I asked if it was safe to continue driving, and I was told yes it is drivable and wouldn’t be a hazard. It’s been over a month and I can never get the status of my vehicle from the service department. I contact the Kia corporate office and they gave them a service completion date and my vehicle has not been repaired. After a second attempt with the corporate office, the corporate office call wasn’t answered so a message was left. This vehicle has 34K miles and should not be in need of such a repair for a 2022 Kia K5. It’s March 11, 2024 and I’m without my vehicle and haven’t been provided with a loaner after several requests. I have learned my lesson and hoping this matter will be resolved.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-23
- VIN: 5XXG64J23NG
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: On August 23rd my car slowed down while on the highway and completely came to a stop and wouldn’t drive while pressing the gas. At this time the forward safety system, EPB, Auto Hold, caution and traction control lights were on. I had to get the car towed to the dealership. September 1 Kia called said nothing was wrong with the car I could pick it up that same day I got charged for a diagnostic fee and also asked for the inspection to be done. Picked up the car on 9/2. After driving the car 2 days all the lights came up including the check engine light, at this moment the car completely stopped and turned off while in the middle of incoming traffic when turning at a light. Quickly turned blinker lights on and turned the car on and was able to drive it at this time only the check engine light was on called my husband because I was shaken by the fact that I could of been seriously injured if traffic would of been heavier at that time. He called Kia told them about the situation and they said to take the car in. As of right now 10/3 Kia is still not aware of what is going on with the vehicle and have stated that they have checked several things and still have not found the issue. The next thing they will be checking is the fuel system. To this moment I am thankful that nothing worse happened when the car completely came to a stop in the middle of incoming traffic, while the car was just inspected 2 days before.
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-11
- VIN: 5XXG64J23NG
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: The saga continues with this particular vehicle, which Goose Creek Mitsubishi failed to disclose had experienced prior accidents, major parts damages, repairs, & replacements. So much so, the frame & body works of the entire vehicle have been quite compromised. The most recent sign of their attempted repairs & replacements, due to undisclosed front & side impact damages, is the entire front bumper, which became fully detached, while in transit. On the way, to & from my wife's surgery, we passed through some uneven pavement sections, along a construction zone, between Barnwell, SC & Aiken, SC, on August 11. As we reached my son's school & entered the parking lot, I began to hear sounds from the front end of the vehicle. By the time we pulled into a parking spot, all but one corner of the bumper had become detached & was lying on the ground. I didn't have the resources, on hand, to properly address the collapsed bumper. Thankfully, my own father came to our rescue. We used bungee cords, straps, & zip ties, in order to secure the front bumper in place. Due to the bumper being offset & the cords/strap crossing over the top edges of the bumper assembly & engine frame, I've been unable to fully secure the hood. The vehicle has been rendered unsafe for highway driving. My mechanic & I have addressed that very bumper, through previous communications, directly to the dealership, through a prior BBB complaint process, & a currently open, SC Consumer Affairs complaint. It's obviously a replacement bumper, attached to a compromised frame. We have shared photos, which revealed breakage & separation, beneath the hood lid, at the very top edges, where the front bumper attachments meet up with the engine frame. There's visible breakage, along the seam of that top edge & at the adjacent passenger side corner. The vehicle was sold to me, in disrepair, & has quickly fallen into further disrepair. Therefore, I've been forced to park the car & wait for proper resolution. Thank You
POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-26
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- VIN: 5XXG44J88NG
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: The Integrated Thermal Management System (ITMS) failed/ malfunctioned. Available for inspection. My car completely lost power on the interstate and it was 70 mph speed limit, I had a semi behind me. I’m taking to the dealer when I’m off in 3 to 4 weeks. Problem has been reported by other owners, as well as Hyundai Sonata N-Lines. Also video evidence. Not been inspected yet, but that’s the problem. No warning lights. Could see the temp gauge moving up when I accelerated. Problem happened when it was cold outside, popped the hood and engine wasn’t overheated at all, ITMS failed.
TIRES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-06-23
- VIN: 5XXG64J27NG
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: The contact leased a 2022 Kia K5 equipped with Pirelli Tires, Tire Line: P Zero AS, Tire Size: 235/45/R18. The contact stated that the passenger’s side front tire had a bubble. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the tire was replaced. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer where it was diagnosed that the driver’s side rear and passenger’s side rear tire thread depth was low. The two tires were replaced. The manufacturer was contacted by email and provided reimbursements for the tires. Additional assistance was provided. The failure mileage was approximately 20,000.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-05-19
- VIN: 5XXG64J28NG
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: The back rotors (part #:58411L0000) needed to be replaced due to warping which caused the vehicle to rapidly shake at high speeds and when slowing down. I tried contacting the dealership in regards to getting my old rotors or a manufacturer name and number and they were unable to fulfill that request. If my rear brakes failed at any point in time then that is putting myself, any passengers in my car, and others around me at danger. Stopping is a huge safety component of any vehicle. Yes, my problem was confirmed by the dealership I got my car from, which in turn they tried to blame me for the problem. It was only inspected by the dealership I got my car from. The only indication/warning I got was when I started to brake or drive on the highway, I knew that there was an issue since I do not think it is right for a brand new <20,000 mile vehicle should be shaking the way mine was before repair. I got my vehicle serviced and repaired on 05/27/23 and noticed the issue a week prior. Called and scheduled an appointment immediately.
POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-05-01
- VIN: 5XXG64J22NG
- Components: POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Within 2 months of buying the car, it has stalled in traffic twice with engine revving. During the first time, it was unnoticeable until my car did not react when pushing the gas pedal. The car stayed at a stop until I restarted it twice. Kia dealership was informed, however, they could not find an issue or code. Recently, the second time was different and more scary. It stalled once again and as soon as I noticed, my car would not accelerate and started rolling and revving with high rpms. I immediately put my hazards on in the middle of a 5 lane road in heavy traffic and was able to let the car roll into a parking lot. I left the car there, turned off, for 30 minutes before restarting it to have someone follow me back home. During this scary trip, the car shook violently and my foot was to the floor on the gas pedal and the car still would not accelerate unless on a slope. A five minute drive turned into a 25 minute trip while backing up traffic. (So, very high rpm’s, slow to almost no acceleration, shaking and revving, NO engine light or warning lights triggered). Engine continued loud revving and moving idle in park that evening. Since then, car has been in mechanic once again with no solutions, codes, or lights to help the dealership figure out the issue because they say “it’s driving perfectly now”. They are the only ones to inspect the vehicle each time.
WHEELS,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-01-09
- VIN: 5XXG64J29NG
- Components: WHEELS,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I have had to replace the front rotors twice now. Once at 20k and again at 30k. The tires had plenty of tread life but started to separate in the center of the tire at 20k miles. No inspection by a dealer. Called Kia as well as Kia customer care and was advised nothing was covered under the warranty. No lights came on but the shaking for the brakes as well as a tire vibration was made apparent
SEAT BELTS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-02-28
- VIN: 5XXG64J29NG
- Components: SEAT BELTS
- Summary: The female buckle component located on the seat directly behind the driver has failed. This has put anyone sitting in the car at a much higher risk of serious injury in the event of a car accident. This problem has been confirmed by the dealer and as of now, no solution is available.

At first, I wasn't a fan of its size compared to a truck, but now, a year later, I absolutely love it! Although it doesn't have the UVO and is pretty basic, I drive it on a daily basis for 120 miles round trip. It's impressively quiet, smooth, and has great headlamps. The only minor issue I have is that I'm only 5' tall, so the seat is very firm under my knees, which can cause numbness.

Handling is crisp, power is adequate, and mpg is great. Overall, it's an excellent value!

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to say that I completely agree with you about the 2014 Honda Accord EX-L V6. It was a great car, but the features that come with the EX package are truly outstanding. In fact, it's easily my favorite car that I've had in years. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Hey there! That's a great car you have there, congratulations on your second one!

I recently purchased a 2022 Kia K5, but unfortunately, it did not come with a garage door opener or a CD player, which we were initially told it had. While we acknowledge that some of this may be due to our own lack of knowledge, we feel that these details should have been brought to our attention. Admittedly, we have found the car to be quite complicated to operate, which has made driving it a bit of a challenge. However, we remain hopeful that with time and practice, we will become more comfortable with it. Thank you for your understanding.
