The Land Rover Freelander is a series of four-wheel-drive vehicles that was manufactured and marketed by Land Rover from 1997 to 2015. Initially a compact SUV built on a body-on-frame chassis, the second generation model, sold from 2007 to 2015 in North America and the Middle East as the LR2 and in Europe as the Freelander 2, transitioned to a car-based platform which placed it into the compact crossover SUV class, and was developed alongside the Volvo XC60, the Volvo S80 and the third generation Ford Mondeo. The name 'Freelander' is derived from the combination of 'Freedom' and 'Lander'.

After having built exclusively body-on-frame 4WD vehicles for half a century, the first generation Freelander was the brand's first model to use monocoque (unibody) structures, and was offered in three- and five-door body options, including a semi soft-top. The second generation (2007–2015) dropped all two-door options, leaving only a five-door estate car-like body, and – after 62 years – became the brand's first ever to offer a two-wheel drive option (as of 2010).

After a five-year hiatus, the two-door Freelanders were succeeded by the three-door versions of the Range Rover Evoque in 2011, and the five-door generation 2 was replaced by the Discovery Sport in 2015, the nameplate spanning two generations and less than eighteen years.

  • VIN: SALFP24NX8H
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I have a 2008 Land Rover LR2 in mint condition and regularly maintained by a Land Rover dealer and purchased new from a LR dealer in Pittsburgh. It only has 39K miles and always parked indoors. Last year I noticed a humming, grinding sound coming from the rear wheels.I took it twice to the Fort Myers Florida LR dealer for service but they could not find the problem other than that the differential needed flushing (unusual for 39K miles). Finally took it to LR dealer two weeks ago in Naples, Florida and it was determined that the rear differential needed replacement. It was explained to me by the Asst. Service Mgr. that it was not safe to drive as the wheels could seize and cause an accident. No warning lamps indicated the problem. Land Rover refused to pay for replacement ($10K quoted cost) citing 4 year warranty period was over despite way below 50K mile warranty. Discovered over 30 similar problems reported on LR2 model on "carcomplaints.com".

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2019-06-24
  • VIN: SALFP24N78H
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I PURCHASED THE CAR IN MARCH OF 2017 WITH 101,000 MILES ON IT. IT NOW HAS 119,000. AS OF 24 JUN 2019, THE REAR END BEGAN MAKING A NOISE WHILE TURNING. I TOOK IT TO A LOCAL IMPORT REPAIR SHOP. MY MECHANIC INFORMED ME THAT THE DIFFERENTIAL IS CURRENTLY BEING HELD TOGETHER WITH ZIP-TIES. ZIP. TIES. AS I HAVE NEVER HAD WORK DONE ON THE REAR END OF THE CAR, THAT MEANS THAT THE ZIP-TIES WERE PUT ON BEFORE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE. I HAVE NO IDEA WHEN BUT THE REAL QUESTION IS THIS: HOW LONG IS A DIFFERENTIAL SUPPOSED TO LAST? THE DIFFERENTIAL IS CURRENTLY LOCKED INTO ALL-WHEEL DRIVE ALL THE TIME. THE DIFFERENTIAL ALONE WILL COST $4900. THE FLUIDS WILL COST $40. I AM NOT SURE ABOUT THE NUMBER OF HOURS OF LABOR BUT IT WON'T BE OVER A DAY. SO LET'S SAY A DAY OF LABOR WOULD BE 8 HRS AT A RATE OF $120/HOUR. 4900+40+960 = 5900. RIGHT NOW, MY VEHICLE IS ONLY WORTH 2,200. I OWE NO LOAN BUT I AM UPSIDE-DOWN NONETHELESS. THIS IS NOT WEAR AND TEAR. THIS DIFFERENTIAL WAS POORLY DESIGNED. THE POOR DESIGN WAS EXACERBATED WHEN THE DIFFERENTIAL WAS NOT DEALT WITH. IF NOT REPLACED, THE LOCKED DIFFERENTIAL WILL DESTROY THE TRANSMISSION. THEN WHAT WILL I DO?

I TOOK IT TO THE SHOP AND IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL WAS THE ISSUE. ON RESEARCHING THE LAND-ROVER FORUM, I FOUND THAT MY ISSUE WAS NOT PECULIAR TO ME ALONE BUT IT WAS A MAJOR ISSUE WITH OTHER 2008 LR2 OWNERS AND COSTLY TO CHANGE TOO. HOWEVER LAND-ROVER ISSUED A TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN LTB00342 (ISSUE 3) IN AUG 2011) ABOUT THIS. WHY NOT A RECALL FOR THE FAULTY REAR DIFFERENTIAL OR FREE REPLACEMENT OF THE

  • Summary: LIKE 1000S OF OTHER OWNERS, MY LR2 NEEDS REAR DIFFERENTIAL REPLACED. WHY NHTSA HAS NOT REVIEWED THIS IS UNBELIEVABLE. THE VOLVO'S BUILT WITH SAME DESIGN HAVE PROBLEMS WITH REAR DIFFERENTIAL FAILING AS WELL. THE COST OF THIS REPAIR $2400-3000.. HAS THE NHTSA EVEN LOOKED INTO THIS? THIS IS AN EXPENSIVE REPAIR AND I'M READING BLOGS WHERE MANY PEOPLE ARE ATTEMPTING TO DO THE REPAIRS THEMSELVES N GIVING EACH OTHER 'TRIAL N ERROR' TIPS. OTHERS ARE POSTING ASKING WHAT'S THE WORST THAT CAN HAPPEN IF THEY DON'T DO THE REPAIRS. WELL, THE TRANSMISSION CAN LOCK UP CAUSING AN ACCIDENT. SO WHAT WILL IT TAKE FOR A RECALL TO BE AT LEAST CONSIDERED? THIS SEEMS TO BE VERY SIMILAR TO TOYOTA PRIUS RECALL SEVERAL YEARS AGO. AND IT TOOK HOW MANY DEATHS BEFORE A RECALL WAS ISSUED?? OR FORD PINTO CASE SAD THING HERE IS... NHTSA SHOULD BE LISTENING TO THE CONSUMERS! YET SEEMS LIKE NOT MUCH HAS CHANGED OR MAYBE FORGOTTEN....

IN ONE INSTANCE THE KEY WAS IN THE IGNITION AND WAS NOT ABLE TO RETRIEVE IT THIS IS NOT BEING RECOGNIZED ADDRESSED BY LAND ROVER. CANNOT KEEP ON IGNORING THIS ISSUE. UNFORTUNATELY NOT EVERYONE REPORTS TO THE MANUFACTURER, SOMEONE HAS TO DO SOMETHING THIS PROBLEMS ARE DRAINING THE WALLETS OF CONSUMERS BECAUSE EACH TIME CARS HAVE TO BE TAKEN TO THE DEALERSHIP TO UNLOCK SYSTEM RELOAD SOFTWARE ONLY TO START A DIAGNOSE. ENDING UP WITH THOUSANDS IN REPAIRS . POLICE HAD TO STOP TO PUT FLARES LAST TIME THE CAR BROKE BECAUSE IT WAS DANGEROUS TO WAIT IN THE DARK FOR TOWING

THE DEALERSHIP, EACH TIME, SAID MY STEERING COLUMN WAS LOCKED BECAUSE I NEEDED A BODY CONTROL MODULE, THEN A NEW BATTERY, AND THE 3RD TIME I HAD A BAD STEERING COLUMN. HOWEVER, IT WAS NEVER A RECALL. I SAW SEVERAL COMPLAINTS OF THIS ONLINE, THOUGH NO ONE HAS BEEN KILLED AS A RESULT OF IT. THE CATCH IS THAT IT HAS CAUSED ME AND OTHERS LOTS OF MONEY (OVER $1400.00) EACH TIME THIS PROBLEM OCCURS. IT HAS NEVER STOPPED WHILE I AS DRIVING (ALWAYS STATIONARY), BUT IT DOES MAKE ME NERVOUS THAT IT MIGHT OR SIMPLY THAT I MAY GET STRANDED AGAIN WITH TOW AND REPAIR COSTS.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2012-05-15
  • VIN: SALFP24N38H
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: I OWN A LAND ROVER LR2 2008, AND IT STARTED MAKING A HUMMING NOISE FROM THE BACK END STARTING AROUND 50,000 MILES. THE NOISE HAS PROGRESSIVELY GOTTEN LOUDER. AFTER CHANGING TIRES, DIFFERENTIAL FLUIDS, AND BRINGING IT TO A MECHANIC (INDEPENDENT), THE PROBLEM WAS DIAGNOSED AS A FAULTY DIFFERENTIAL SYSTEM. ONLINE RESEARCH CONFIRMS THIS PROBLEM AS COMMON AMONG THIS MAKE MODEL AND YEAR. LAND ROVER NORTH AMERICA HAS NOT ISSUED ANY RECALLS FOR THE FAULTY DIFFERENTIAL SYSTEM AND IS NOT CORRELATED TO ANY FAULT OF THE OWNER/DRIVER. THE HUMMING NOISE IS LOUDEST WHEN ACCELERATING OR CRUISING. THE SOUND SOFTENS WHEN DE-ACCELERATING OR WHEN TURNING TO THE "RIGHT". CONTINUED USE OF A FAULTY REAR DIFFERENTIAL WILL RESULT IN THE GEARS LOCKING UP AND POSSIBLY LEADING TO AN ACCIDENT. FAULTY DIFFERENTIALS ARE NOT THE RESULT OF DRIVING PATTERNS NOR MAINTENANCE NEGLECT. CURRENT RATES TO FIX REAR DIFFERENTIALS ON THIS MAKE AND MODEL ARE BETWEEN $3K AND $5K AND LAND ROVER NORTH AMERICA DOES NOT OFFER ANY FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE. ONLINE RESEARCH INDICATES THIS PROBLEM IS A PATTERN AND A TREND AND LAND ROVER SHOULD ISSUE AN OFFICIAL RECALL.

2008-02-05
  • Manufacturer: LAND ROVER
  • Components: VISIBILITY:SUN/MOON ROOF ASSEMBLY
  • Summary: LAND ROVER IS RECALLING 12,353 MY 2008 LR2 VEHICLES BUILT WITH A SUNROOF. FAILURE OF EITHER THE LEFT OR RIGHT HAND SIDE SUNROOF GUIDE RAIL CAN OCCUR WHEN THE SUNROOF IS OPERATED. EXCESSIVE STRESS CAN DEVELOP IN THE OVER-MOLDED BRACKET WHICH COULD LEAD TO CRACKING DURING NORMAL SUNROOF OPERATION. IF CRACKS OCCUR AND PROPAGATE IN A CERTAIN AREA OF THE GUIDE RAIL, FRAGMENTS OF THE PLASTIC OVER-MOLD MATERIAL MAY DETACH FROM THE GUIDE RAIL AND OBSTRUCT THE OPERATION OF THE SUNROOF.
  • Consequence: THE OBSTRUCTION COULD CAUSE THE SUNROOF, WHEN OPERATED, TO BIND, TWIST, AND POTENTIALLY DETACH FROM THE OPERATING MECHANISM. IF THE SUNROOF IS SUBSEQUENTLY CYCLED AND A VERTICAL FORCE APPLIED, I.E., A CUSTOMER MANUALLY AIDING THE ROOF TO CLOSE OR WIND LIFT, THE GLASS PANEL CAN BECOME FULLY DETACHED FROM THE VEHICLE, INCREASING THE RISK OF INJURY.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL RETENTION INSERTS TO BOTH SIDES OF THE GLASS PANEL GUIDE RAILS. THE RECALL BEGAN ON FEBRUARY 29, 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT LAND ROVER AT 1-800-637-6837.

Negative 2008 Land rover Lr2 car reviews

  1. Devon O'Connell 2024-11-02

I have experienced several issues with my Land Rover, including the car cutting out while driving, the gas gauge malfunctioning, and the car staying on even after removing the key. Unfortunately, these issues have resulted in the car being bought back as a lemon. While I have had a difficult experience, I am confident in my decision to not purchase another Land/Range Rover in the future.

  2. Sven Thompson 2024-08-02

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my LR2. Unfortunately, I've had to take it to the dealership for repairs for 35 of the 90 days that I've owned it. It seems that the parts needed to fix it are quite complicated to obtain. For example, I've been waiting for two weeks for a gasket for my new cylinder head. Can you believe that I had to replace a cylinder after only 90 days? On top of that, I've had some trouble with the car not starting or stalling out. Have you experienced anything similar with your car?

  3. Jefferey Runolfsdottir 2024-07-25

I really liked the appearance of the SUV, but unfortunately, I had some issues with maintenance. I had to replace the brakes and rotors at 22,000 miles, which was unexpected, and then the tires needed to be replaced at 28,000 miles. I was told that this was the average lifespan for brakes and the maximum for tires. Additionally, I experienced air noise and front-end steering problems from the beginning. Ultimately, I decided to trade in the SUV for a BMW, which has been a better fit for me. While I was disappointed with the upkeep of the SUV, I am glad to have moved on to a vehicle that better suits my needs.

  4. Eleazar Considine 2024-06-17

Hello! We wanted to share our experience with our Land Rover. Unfortunately, we had some issues with our car breaking down at only 2800 miles. We were concerned about the coolant levels and the Land Rover team has been working on the issue for the past 3 weeks. We understand that this may be a common issue with other buyers as well. We appreciate the Land Rover team's efforts to resolve the issue, but we are still concerned about the safety of the car. We hope that a solution can be found soon. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

  5. Bertram Reynolds 2024-06-11

The car is only 30 days old, yet it has already been in for service three times. The first two times were due to a faulty passenger seat airbag sensor, and now it has refused to start three times in just two days, with the check engine and battery lights coming on. Unfortunately, LR didn't have the P/N for the part that needed to be replaced, which resulted in a 2.5 week wait. However, LR eventually shipped the part all the way from the UK. While the price of the LR2 was great, it seems that the saying 'you get what you pay for' may apply. Despite this, we are still hopeful that the LR2 will meet our expectations.

  1. Adrien Wolf 2024-11-15

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my LR2 SE that I purchased back in October 2007. At the time, I was in graduate school and needed a reliable winter vehicle to get me around. I looked at a few different SUVs in the mid $30K price range, including Nissan Pathfinders, but the LR2 won me over after the test drive. I have to say, I couldn't be happier with my decision! It's been a fantastic car for me, especially on road trips. The LR2 is so easy to drive and the seats are incredibly comfortable. It's not too big, but still has plenty of space to carry whatever I need. Plus, it's compact enough to drive in town every day. And when it comes to bad weather, this car really shines! The snow terrain response setting is phenomenal, and the headlights and nav are top-notch. Overall, I'm really glad I went with the LR2 and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable and comfortable SUV.

  2. Max Goldner 2024-11-08

Congratulations on completing your first month and 1000 miles with your LR2! It's great to hear that you've been receiving positive comments on the car's appearance and that you're enjoying the ride, especially since you were transitioning from a sedan. The driver's seat seems to be spacious enough for tall people, which is fantastic. I'm glad to hear that you opted for the upgraded sound system and lighting package, as they seem to be enhancing your driving experience. It's unfortunate that the bluetooth phone system has been causing some issues, but hopefully, LR is working on a solution. Overall, it sounds like LR has done an excellent job with the redesign. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

The ride and design of the car are great, however, there is a major issue with the car shifter getting locked into neutral. Despite going to the dealer twice in less than two weeks, the problem persists and the dealer is unable to find any issue when checking the system. I am wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem and if there are any solutions available.

I traded 'down' to the LR2 from the Range Rover Sport and I absolutely love this SUV. In some ways, it is even more enjoyable than the Sport. It has more interior room than the Sport, a comparable stereo, and looks just as good, all for 2/3rds of the price. Although I have only owned this vehicle for a month, it has had no problems, which is a great improvement compared to my experience with the Sport in the same time period. I highly recommend it!

I work out of town for a living and average around 40,000km a year on my vehicles. The Land Rover LR2 has been the best vehicle I have owned. I have owned everything from trucks to cars to vans, but I wouldn't drive anything other than my Land Rover. Admittedly, the cargo space is a little tight, but aside from that, this vehicle is solid! Living in Canada, going through the 7 months of Canadian winters, you need a reliable vehicle. Aside from the scheduled maintenance, I haven't had a single issue with it. Even after putting 30000 km on it in 9 months, the engine still purrs like a kitten. Thanks for the dependability, Land Rover. Good job!
