2012 Audi S4 problems
The Audi S4 is the high performance variant of Audi's compact executive car A4. The original Audi S4, built from 1991 until 1994, was a performance-oriented version of Audi's 100 saloon/sedan. All subsequent S4s since 1997 have been based on the Audi A4; and as the A4 has evolved from one generation to the next, so has the S4.
Like its regular A4 counterpart, all S4 variants have had longitudinally oriented, front-mounted engines. All versions of the S4 have their transmission mounted immediately at the rear of the engine in a longitudinal orientation, in the form of a transaxle, and like all Audi "S" cars, are only available as standard with Audi's quattro all-wheel drive (AWD) system, using a Torsen-based centre differential system. A more powerful internal combustion engine, larger upgraded brakes, firmer suspension, larger wheels, and distinctive sheetmetal, styling clues and badging have always been amongst the many upgrades the S4 receives over its mainstream 100 and A4 siblings. In markets where the even higher-performance Audi RS 4 is not offered, the S4 is the top-of-the-line trim of the A4 family.
A single turbocharged 2.2-litre inline five-cylinder powered the original C4 version, and a 2.7-litre twin turbocharged V6 engine was found in the B5 generation. The B6 and B7 versions shared a common 4.2-litre V8 engine, the first time that a V8 engine was placed in a compact executive car, placing it in direct competition with the BMW M3 (3.2 L inline 6) and Mercedes-Benz C32 AMG (3.2-litre supercharged V6). The B8 generation uses a supercharged 3.0-litre V6 TFSI engine and competed with the BMW 335i, BMW 335i/340i xDrive, and Mercedes-Benz C350. The current B9 generation is powered by a turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 TFSI engine, with rivals including the BMW M340i xDrive and Mercedes-Benz C450 AMG/Mercedes-AMG C43 4MATIC.
All versions of the S4 have been manufactured at Audi's plant in Ingolstadt, Germany; they are, or have been available as a four-door five-seat saloon and a five-door five-seat Avant (Audi's name for an estate car/station wagon) body styles since the model's inception in 1991. A two-door four-seat Cabriolet (convertible) S4 variant was introduced as part of the B6 and B7 generation A4 lineups. The B8 Cabriolet has now been built off the A5 coupe body style and the "S" variant is marketed under the Audi S5 nameplate.

- Sunroof: According to some owners, the sunroof deflector creates noise with the windows down that has been described as less than comfortable. Your sunroof may or may not have had this replaced. The correct part number for the updated version is 8D9-877-651-A.
- Power Steering Wandering: In B8.5 S4s, which had electromagnetic steering systems, owners report steering wandering. This is the result of software issues and can only be fixed by a dealership software update. However, the fix has yet to be found and dealerships will notify affected owners once it becomes available. For now, there isn’t much owners can do that is approved by Audi.
- 6spd Clutch Noise: In manual transmission models, owners have experienced ‘creaking’ noises from the clutch during operation. There have been multiple updates to technical service bulletins but no permanent solution has come from Audi. IN SOME CASES, THIS LOSS OF POWER CAN MAKE THINGS DIFFICULT TO PULL OVER SAFELY, AS THE STALL CAN HAPPEN IN AN INTERSECTION, OR IN STOP AND GO TRAFFIC ON THE FREEWAY. AUDI HAS RECOGNIZED THIS PROBLEM IN THE FORM OF A TSB (2032211), HOWEVER, ALL CARS WITH THIS PARTICULAR TRANSMISSION MAY EXPERIENCE A SIMILAR ISSUE, AT ANY TIME, DESPITE FOLLOWING MANUFACTURER SERVICE INTERVALS. THE ISSUE MAY APPEAR TO BE INTERMITTENT AND MAY NOT ENTER FULL LIMP MODE UNTIL MANY MILES LATER. MY INITIAL ENCOUNTER WITH QUESTIONABLE TRANSMISSION BEHAVIOR WAS ABOUT 10-15K MILES PRIOR. THIS PARTICULAR CASE DOCUMENTED WAS THE WORST SCENARIO, BUT SIMILAR SCENARIOS (COMING OFF THE FREEWAY AND STALLING SHORTLY AFTER STOPPING, OR NOT BEING ABLE TO ENGINE BRAKE PROPERLY DUE TO TRANSMISSION REFUSING TO SHIFT) HAVE ALSO BEEN EXPERIENCED.

- Summary: I AM A MECHNIC WITH 10 YEARS OF EXPERIENCE AND I JUST STARTED THIS NEW JOB TWO WEEKS AGO. THEIR JUST THREE MECHNICS IN THE SHOP. WE HAD A 2012 AUDI S4 COME INTO THE SHOP WITH THE OWNER COMPLAINING OF BRAKE PROBLEMS. THE OWNER OF THE CAR SAID THE SOMTIMES ALL THE SUDDEN HIS BRAKES WOULD GO OUT WHILE HE WAS DRIVING AND HIS BRAKE PEDEL FELT SOFT. I TOOK ON THE WORK. MY SHOP FOREMAN TOLD ME TO BLEED THE BRAKES OUT. SO I DID. I NOTICED THT THE BRAKE RESIVIOR HAD A THICK GREEN SUBTANCE IN IT. I KNEW FROM MY EXPERIENCE THAT THEIR WAS A LOT OF WATER AND OTHER CONTAMINATION IN THE SYSTEM. I IMEADITLY INFORMD MY FOREMAN THAT THE SYSTEM NEEDED TO BE FLUSHED AND CLEANED. MY FOREMAN TOLD ME THT THE CAR WAS DONE AND TO MOVE ON. I IMEADITLY EXPRESSED MY CONCERN AND GAVE MY PROFESSIONAL ADVICE THAT THAT CAR WAS NOT TO BE DRIVING UNTIL IT WAS FIXD. THE BRAKES COULD FAIL ANYTIME AND SOMONE COULD BE KILLED. HRS LATER I LOOKED OUTSIDE AND SEEN THE CARS OWNER AND HIS KIDS GET INTO THE CAR AND DRIVE OFF. I AGAIN EXPRESSED MY CONCERN TO THE FOREMAN. HE HAD TOLD THE CUSTOMER THT IT WAS FIXED. MY FORMAN JUST LET THIS COSTMER LEAVE OUT IN A CAR WITH HIS KIDS THE WAS UNSAFE TO BE ON THE ROAD. THE CAR IS A DEATH TRAP. MY FOREMAN JUST DIDNT CARE. NEXT DAY THE CAR CAME BACK WITH THE COSTOMER COMPLAING THE HIS BRAKES FAILD ON HIM AND THAT THEY WHERE NOT FIXED. IF SOMEONE HAD BEEN KILLED THAN IT WOULD BE MY FOREMANS FALT FOR NEGLANCE. I THINK HE SHOULD GOTO JAIL FOR THIS. IT IS MORALY WRONG AND DANGEROUS. WHT IS IT GONNA TAKE FOR THEASE TYPE OF ACTIONS FROM HIM TO STOP. HOPFULLY NOT FOR SOMONEMTO DIE FIRST.

- Summary: I OWN A 2012 AUDI S4 WITH A 7 SPEED DSG TRANSMISSION AND NOTICE HARD SHIFTING IN 1-2 AND 2-1 AND ALSO INTO REVERSE AND DRIVE. I HAVE READ ABOUT THIS BEING A MECHTRONICS UNIT OR WHOLE REPLACEMENT OF THE TRANSMISSION CAN BE NEEDED. AFTER BRINGING THE CAR INTO AUDI 4 TIMES WITH THESE ISSUES THEY FINALLY SAID THAT I NEED TO REPLACE THE TCU AND UPDATE SOFTWARE ON THE ECU. I ASKED IF THIS WILL FIX THE ISSUE AND THEY SAID THAT THIS REPAIR WILL BE THE FIRST IN AN ORDER OF PARTS TO BE REPLACED TO HOPEFULLY FIX THE PROBLEM. NEXT WOULD BE THE MECHTRONICS OR THE ENTIRE TRANSMISSION. I BOUGHT THE CAR WITH 29K MILES AND 8 MONTHS LEFT ON THE FACTORY WARRANTY FROM A LOCAL SMALL DEALERSHIP. AFTER PURCHASING THE CAR AND GOING TO THE DEALER WITH THESE ISSUE 4 TIMES..NOW THEY TELL ME AUDI VOIDED THE POWER TRAIN WARRANTY OF THE CAR AT 5K MILES DUE TO A ECU TUNE. SO THEY ARE DENYING THE CLAIM. I TALKED TO A LOCAL TUNER TO SEE IF THE CAR HAD A TUNE ON THE ECU..THEY SAID NO..I ALSO CALLED SEVERAL NATIONWIDE TUNERS TO ASK THEM IF MY CARS VIN WAS ON RECORD OF GETTING A TUNE AND THEY SAID NO. SO SINCE IT WAS BEFORE I BOUGHT THE CAR I DO NOT KNOW WHAT COMPANY OR FOR HOW LONG IT WAS TUNED FOR. THE LOCAL DEALER NEVER TOLD ME WHILE BRINGING THE CAR IN FOR TRANSMISSION ISSUES THAT I DID NOT HAVE A POWER TRAIN WARRANTY UNTIL A MAJOR COST WAS INVOLVED. THEY KNOW THERE ARE PROBLEMS WITH THESE TRANSMISSION HENCE THE UPDATED TCU AND SOFTWARE UPDATE TO THE ECU AS WELL AS THE UPDATED PART# OF THE MECHTRONICS UNIT THEY WOULD REPLACE IT WITH. - Manufacturer: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc.
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM:FUEL RAIL
- Summary: Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. (Volkswagen) is recalling certain model year 2011-2012 Audi S4, S5, Q7, 2012 Audi A6, Volkswagen Touareg Hybrid, and 2012-2013 Audi A7 vehicles. In the affected vehicles the fuel injection system may experience a fuel leak.
- Consequence: A fuel leak in the injection system in the presence of an ignition source, increases the risk of a fire.
- Remedy: Volkswagen will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel rails and corresponding seals, free of charge. The recall began on March 17, 2015. Owners may contact Audi customer service at 1-800-822-2834 or Volkswagen customer service at 1-800-893-5298. Volkswagen's numbers for this recall are 24AP for Audi customers and 24BK for Volkswagen customers.

This car is really enjoyable to drive and it's surprisingly quiet. I find myself checking the speedometer often to make sure I'm not going too fast. The build quality is excellent and the car feels really solid. The manual transmission is a joy to use and it even provides shifting suggestions. With so much torque, I'm often in 6th gear going 50 km/hr and still have decent passing power.

I recently purchased this car as a Certified Pre-Owned with only 7700 miles on it. It has a sleek Meteor Gray exterior with a black and red interior. The car comes with some great options, including the Nappa leather package, Bang & Olufsen stereo, Pirelli P-Zero tires, and iPod connection. The performance of the vehicle is truly incredible at every level. I previously owned an '04 BMW M3 and an '02 Porsche 911, but I needed an AWD vehicle. The S4 performs equally or better than both of those vehicles. The power is instantaneous and the shifting is smooth and controlled. The interior design is well laid out with easy access to controls. The MMI system takes a little getting used to, but once you learn it, it functions well overall.

I drove the S4 and ended up buying it with the prestige package, rear sport differential, rear side air bags, and silk nappa leather. I must say, it's a much nicer quality car than the BM's I tested. The S4 is both beautiful inside and out. The ride is smooth and the car is quiet, until you unleash the beast under the hood. The S4 handles great and is very fast. I highly recommend this car!

I've been driving my new S4 for four weeks now and I'm absolutely loving it! It's easy and fun to drive both in town and on the highway. I've already put on 2100 miles - 900 in town and 1200 on a long road trip. The fit and finish are top notch, and the blend of performance, luxury/comfort, and mid-size make this car almost perfect as a daily driver. While it doesn't quite have the surgical handling and steering feel of a BMW 3 series, the S4's power, smooth and responsive drivetrain, top-notch build quality and materials, and extra six inches in length over the 3 series more than make up for it. The S4 is a fast, stylish, higher-end performance vehicle that is well worth its higher price.

I'm really happy that I decided to recalculate the price of the S4 Prem Plus compared to the Avant Prem Plus with Nav and B&O that I initially ordered. The difference in cost was minimal, and the experience of driving this car is indescribable. It's simply amazing - the engine, handling, and quietness when cruising, as well as the growl when you step on it. The interior is nicely laid out and beautifully appointed. The 6MT is super nice, and having come off the latest gen BMW 3-series (E90), I can say that this 6MT is much better - smoother, more precise, and shorter - than the BMW's. The S4 seats are also much more supportive and comfortable than the 3er with the Sports Package.

I purchased my Audi S4 brand new in November 2011. Unfortunately, in December of the same year, the radiator broke down. After a bit of discussion, the dealer agreed to replace the coolant free of charge. Recently, on March 3rd, the FM radio stopped working. The screen is blank and there is no sound. Yesterday, the screen went blank for about 20 minutes, but after turning off the engine and waiting for an hour, the FM radio returned to normal. Today, we tried the same thing, but it did not work. While these issues are frustrating, I will continue to document any further problems with my car.
