2012 Gmc Sierra 1500 problems
The Chevrolet Silverado is a range of trucks manufactured by General Motors under the Chevrolet brand. Introduced for the 1999 model year, the Silverado is the successor to the long-running Chevrolet C/K model line. Taking its name from the top trim level from the Chevrolet C/K series, the Silverado is offered as a series of full-size pickup trucks, chassis cab trucks, and medium-duty trucks. The fourth generation of the model line was introduced for the 2019 model year.
The Chevrolet Silverado shares mechanical commonality with the identically related GMC Sierra; GMC ended the use of the C/K nomenclature a model generation prior to Chevrolet. In Mexico, high-trim level versions of the Silverado use the Chevrolet Cheyenne name (not to be confused with the 2003 concept). Competing against the Ford F-Series, Ram Pickup, Toyota Tundra, and Nissan Titan, the Silverado is among the best-selling vehicles in the United States, having sold over 12 million trucks since its introduction in 1998 as a 1999 model year.
History
The Silverado nameplate made its debut for the 1975 model year, becoming the top trim level on all Chevrolet C/K trucks, slotted above Custom Deluxe, Scottsdale, and Cheyenne. For the 1968 model year (seven years before the Silverado), GMC C/K trucks used variations of the Sierra name (Sierra, Sierra Classic, Sierra Grande, and High Sierra). Even after the C/K series officially ended, GM still uses the CK and the CC in their current model codes, to denote a two-wheel drive (CC), and four-wheel drive (CK).
For the 1988 GMT400 model architecture, Chevrolet retained the C/K model nomenclature, with GMC branding its full-size line as Sierras. While sharing the same body and chassis, the model chronology of the Silverado and Sierra are different, with five generations of the Sierra, while four of the Silverado.
In 2018, at the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, Indiana, Chevrolet unveiled the first medium-duty Silverado, expanding the model line to a 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD chassis cab. Largely the successor to the 2003–2009 GMT560 chassis, the medium-duty trucks are exclusive to Chevrolet, with no plans for an equivalent GMC version. Instead, Navistar International (now partnering with GM) would sell the medium-duty trucks as a rebadged counterpart, called the CV. This is in fact a very similar nod to how the Avalanche did not have a GMC Yukon–based equivalent, but instead, Cadillac would take its place as the former's rebadged counterpart, the Escalade EXT.

Common 2012 Gmc Sierra 1500 problems
The GMC Sierra 1500, a luxurious full-size truck, has its fair share of issues, just like any other vehicle. Here are the three most common problems reported by hundreds of real owners, based on data from RepairPal:
- Four-wheel-drive transfer case position sensor/selector switch failure: Over 450 owners have reported this issue, which is caused by the failure of the 4WD transfer case encoder motor position sensor or the selector switch. This problem can lead to a visit to a service department for diagnosis and repair, with the diagnostic test costing between $88 and $111. If the selector switch needs replacing, the repair cost will be higher.
- A/C temperature and air delivery mode door actuator failure: This issue, reported by over 260 owners, affects the HVAC system's ability to deliver air to cool or heat the Sierra's cab. The failure is indicated by a fault in the A/C control module, which requires a diagnostic visit and potential repair costs.
- Fuel level sensor failure: The fuel level sensor in the gas tank can read the fuel level incorrectly, leading to the need for replacement. RepairPal technicians recommend replacing the entire fuel pump module on high-mileage GMC Sierra 1500 models, which can cost around $1,000.
These issues, along with other miscellaneous problems such as electrical issues and heating system malfunctions, contribute to the GMC Sierra 1500's average annual repair and maintenance cost of $727, which is lower than the average for all trucks in this class. Despite these problems, the GMC Sierra 1500 ranks high on a list of full-size pickups for reliability, with an above-average reliability rating of 3.5 out of 5.0 based on cost, frequency, and severity of maintenance and repairs.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-09-27
- VIN: 1GT426C82CF
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: I WAS DRIVING MY TRUCK UP A 6% PERCENT GRADE WHEN THE CHANGE FUEL FILTER SOON WARNING POPPED UP, ABOUT A MINUTE LATER THE VEHICLE STARTED TO LOSE POWER, I KEPT DRIVING TO TRY AND GET OVER THE HILL SO I COULD MAKE IT TO A REPAIR SHOP TO HAVE IT CHECKED OUT. I WAS ONLY ABLE TO MAKE IT ABOUT 2 MILES AFTER THE WARNING SHOWED UP BEFORE THE VEHICLE COMPLETELY SHUT DOWN AND WOULD NOT RESTART. (THERE WAS NOT ENOUGH ROOM ON THE SHOULDER TO PULL OVER ON MY SIDE THE ROAD SO I TRIED TO TURN ACROSS THE HIGHWAY WHERE THERE WAS AN EMERGENCY PULL OUT AND AS I DID THE TRUCK DIED SIDEWAYS RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE HIGHWAY, TAKING UP SEVERAL LANES OF TRAFFIC, FORTUNATELY THERE WAS ENOUGH INCLINE THAT I WAS ABLE TO ROLL BACKWARDS AND PULL OVER UP AGAINST THE GUARDRAIL) OF COURSE I HAD NO POWER STEERING OR POWER BRAKES SINCE THE TRUCK WAS NOT RUNNING. IT WAS A VERY DANGEROUS SITUATION! I WAS ABLE TO GET MY TRUCK TOWED TO THE LOCAL GM REPAIR SHOP WHERE THEY DETERMINED THAT THE FUEL PUMP HAD A CATASTROPHIC FAILURE AND HAD SENT ALUMINUM SHAVINGS THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM. THEY SAID THE REPAIRS WOULD BE APPROXIMATELY $10,000 SO I CONTACTED GM AND DESCRIBED WHAT HAPPENED, AND THEY BASICALLY TOLD ME TO GO FLY A KITE. AFTER DOING SOME RESEARCH ONLINE IT LOOKS LIKE THERE HAS BEEN A MAJOR PROBLEM WITH GM TRUCKS WITH THE DURAMAX MOTOR FROM 2011-2016 AFTER THEY CHANGED THERE FUEL PUMP FROM THE CP3 HIGH VOLUME LOW PRESSURE PUMP TO THE CP4 HIGH PRESSURE LOW VOLUME PUMP. WHICH MEANS THE PUMP RUNS WITH LESS LUBRICATION WHICH RESULTS IN PUMP FAILURE, AND NOT JUST FAILURE BUT CATASTROPHIC FAILURE WHICH CAUSES MAJOR DAMAGE TO THE ENTIRE FUEL SYSTEM. I HAVE BEEN A LOYAL GM OWNER FOR OVER TWENTY YEARS, AND I AM EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED THAT GM IS NOT WILLING TO MAKE IT RIGHT.

- Summary: OUR GMC HAS EXPERIENCED 3 EXTERIOR DOOR HANDLE FAILURES. WE PAID TO HAVE THE 1ST BROKEN HANDLE REPAIRED AS IT WAS NOT OPERABLE FROM THE OUTSIDE. THIS MAKES FOR A DANGEROUS EVACUATION EXPERIENCE IN THE EVENT OF AN EMERGENCY. WE CHOSE A NON-DEALER REPAIR FACILITY DUE TO THE COST OF USING A DEALER. THIS REPAIR HAS HELD UP WELL. SINCE THAT INITIAL REPAIR 2 MORE EXTERIOR HANDLES HAVE BECOME INOPERABLE. IT'S ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE THE 4TH AND FINAL HANDLE FAILS. THIS VEHICLE IS NO LONGER UNDER WARRANTY. HOWEVER, IT'S ONLY VERY LIGHTLY USED AND HAS LESS THAN 60K MILES ON IT. A 75% DOOR HANDLE FAILURE RATE IS UNACCEPTABLE BY ANYONE'S STANDARD. DUE TO THE COST OF THE REPAIRS WE HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO FIX THESE REMAINING 2 DEFECTIVE HANDLES. GMC, BBB AND NORTH COUNTY GMC IN ESCONDIDO, CA HAVE BEEN OF NO ASSISTANCE. WE ARE ALWAYS PREPARED TO PERFORM THE REQUIRED MAINTENANCE ON OUR VEHICLES. IN NO WAY IS THE REPAIR OF 3 DOOR HANDLES A "NORMAL" MAINTENANCE ITEM. THIS IS A SEVERE SAFETY HAZARD IN THE EVENT THE AN EMERGENCY EVACUATION IS REQUIRED. THERE IS NO WAY FOR 2 OF THE DOORS CAN BE OPENED FROM THE EXTERIOR OF THE VEHICLE. IT'S UNFORTUNATE GMC SEES THIS AS "DEFECTIVE" BUT IS NOT WILLING TO ASSIST IN THE REPAIRS. ALL 3 OF THE HANDLE BROKE WHILE TRYING TO GAIN ACCESS TO THE VEHICLE FROM THE OUTSIDE. THE VEHICLE WAS STATIONARY EACH TIME. ALL HANDLES ARE USABLE FROM THE INTERIOR OF THE VEHICLE. THE 2 UNREPAIRED HANDLES DO NOT WORK FROM THE EXTERIOR. WE WANT TO FIX THEM AND WOULD LIKE ASSISTANCE IN DOING SO.

Positive 2012 Gmc Sierra 1500 car reviews

This truck is the best choice I ever made. It's my first truck I've ever bought. My brother and parents are having great luck with theirs, so I thought I'd give it a shot. I could not have asked for more with this amazing vehicle. I'm 6'4 and the shortest of 4 guys in my family, and we all fit great in this truck. It's great for road trips or just driving around town. The gas mileage is great for the size and safety!
-
If you're shorter than 6 feet, you may need to stretch a bit to get in and out of the car. Additionally, the console may be a bit too high to easily slide across the front seat. There have been some reports of the side left-hand front seat bolster cracking, and the driver's door handle may feel a bit weak.
-
I'm glad to hear that you're okay after your recent front-end collision. It's great to know that your truck did a good job of protecting you. Hopefully, it will be possible to rebuild it.
-
I bought this truck with 98,000 miles on it and have put about 22,000 more miles on it since acquisition. It's been a great ride so far! Not a single drop of oil burned and it runs even better than my previous 2006 Chevy Avalanche. I'm hoping to keep it for another ten or twenty years. The AFM listed on the window sticker, as all 5.3s did in 2012, is a great feature. I can't even tell when it changes, only when the tranny changes when driving away. It has all the power I need and more, and it gets about 16 or 17 MPG on average. I'm extremely happy with this truck and I got a great price on it. I did a lot of searching and praying before I bought it, and I'm glad I did. To all GM truck owners, good luck and happy driving!
-
Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with the 5.3L motor and 6 speed HD transmission combo. I've found them to be surprisingly powerful when trailering, which has been a huge relief. While the transmission can be a bit loose at times, I think it's due to the previous owner's driving behaviors. Overall, the 4x4 capabilities are good and the gas mileage is impressive. I've put 155k miles on it and have had zero issues, thanks in part to meticulous maintenance by a Chevy dealership. The motor sounds pretty mean and acts like it too, which is always a plus. I'm confident it will last well beyond 300K miles. Thanks for listening!

Yesterday, my Stabilitrak light and engine light came on, which put my truck into reduced power mode and eventually caused my motor to fail while driving my family home a couple of hours away. It was a scary experience, and I am disappointed with GM for this issue. I strongly advise potential buyers to research the Stabilitrak systems and which GM models have it before making a purchase. I hope GM takes responsibility for this issue and makes necessary improvements to ensure the safety of their customers.

Be careful when towing a 16 ft cargo open 3ft trailer as there may be issues with the ignition steering column. The day before I was due to move my personal belongings, the truck started having electrical problems. Despite this, I had to move the trailer or risk losing my belongings. As I was about to hook up the trailer, the truck lost complete power in reverse. I tried to turn the wheel but the column was locked, and the key was stuck in the ignition. After several attempts to start the truck, the starter kicked on and kept grinding. The steering was still locked, and the truck was in park. When I put the gear in reverse, the truck took off forward with the steering locked towards a retaining wall. Despite pressing the emergency brake, the truck was still heading towards the wall. I managed to pull on the steering wheel, but it broke off the turn signal arm in the process. The truck hit the wall and shut down. It was a scary experience, but thankfully no one was hurt.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my truck. I've had it for 2 years now and it's been really comfortable. However, I've noticed that when it comes to heavy-duty tasks, like towing a vintage camper and a 4x4 4 wheeler, it struggles a bit. Even with synthetic oil changes every 5,000 miles, it overheats when trying to pull a hill at 45 mph. Additionally, I had to reinstall the door bumper guards at 37,000 miles. Overall, it's a great truck for everyday use, but for heavy-duty tasks, I think I might prefer my old Silverado. Thanks for listening!

I bought this truck in September and I must say, it's a smooth driving pickup. If I had the extra money, I would have gone for the SLT. However, the door handles are in a bad spot and passengers have a hard time finding them. The cab is already starting to make noise and the steering feels cheap. I'm planning on bringing it to the dealer to have it checked out. On the bright side, fuel economy is good, averaging around 17 mpg. The 5.3 liter engine has great power, even with the truck loaded up. I haven't towed anything heavy yet, so I'm not sure how the truck would handle or brake. The leather interior is very comfortable, even on long trips, and you can't beat the full-size room. I got a good deal and the dealership was great.

I have only owned this pickup for two weeks, yet I have already spent $2500 in repairs.
