The Land Rover Discovery is a series of seven-seater family SUVs, produced under the Land Rover marque, from the British manufacturer Land Rover, and later Jaguar Land Rover. The series is currently in its fifth iteration (or generation, according to the manufacturer), the first of which was introduced in 1989, making the Discovery the first new model series since the launch of the 1970 Range Rover – on which it was based – and only the third new product line since the conception of the Land Rover (vehicle and brand) by Rover in 1948. Although positioned below the Range Rover in the company's line-up, the vehicle was both longer and higher, offered more room in the back, and optionally also more seats. Space utilization became more sophisticated in later iterations, but the series keeps offering seats for seven occupants. Despite originally being sold as an affordable alternative to the Range Rover, the Discovery has also progressively moved upmarket through its successive generations to become a bonafide luxury SUV.
The second Discovery (1998) was called the Series II, and though featuring an extended rear body, was otherwise an updated facelift, which carried on the 100 in (2,540 mm) wheelbase frame and rigid, live front and rear axles of the original Range Rover into 2004.
The third iteration – succeeding the series I and II in 2004 - was either titled the Discovery 3 or simply LR3 (in North America and the Middle East). This was the first all-original design for the Discovery. Although it followed the 2002 third generation Range Rover, also switching to fully independent suspension, it still received a separate, but integrated body and frame (IBF) structure. The fourth iteration, as of 2009 – like the series II, was again mainly an update of the new generation – marketed as the Discovery 4, or Land Rover LR4 for North American and Middle Eastern markets.
The fifth iteration of the Discovery, introduced in 2017, no longer sports a numeric suffix. Unlike the previous two generations, it now benefits from a unitized body structure, making it lighter than its predecessor.

I absolutely love my 03 S7! The handling is fantastic, especially considering its size and weight. However, I have had some mechanical issues. If you're considering purchasing an 03 Disco, make sure the previous owner had the ABS 'brain' changed with the recall. Otherwise, you may end up spending around $2500. The tires and brakes have held up well, but it's important to remember that it's not a racecar. Treat it with care and it will take you anywhere without any issues. On a side note, I once had a lady rear-end me and her minivan was completely destroyed while my tank of a truck didn't even have a scratch!

I've owned this car for four years and put around 35,000 miles on it. I've taken good care of it and have had very few issues. The Land Rover dealer here in Colorado is amazing! I've looked at a lot of newer cars and SUVs to trade in, but the quality just isn't there. The interiors are cheap and unappealing. In comparison, Land Rover and Range Rover interiors are amazing. While all cars have issues, my dad, who was a mechanic for 40 years, always said that proper maintenance is key to keeping any car running smoothly. Even a Honda won't last forever without maintenance.

I purchased my Discovery just as it came off of a lease return. As someone who has had many off-road vehicles and served in the military, I've seen my fair share of off-roading. I have been thoroughly impressed with the reliability of this vehicle and will likely always have a Discovery or other Land Rover in my collection. I frequently travel across Canada for business with my Disco, as well as joining some off-road clubs. It performs exceptionally well on ice roads, deep snow, and mud! It handles all of this and still looks great for business meetings. I have now driven 266301kms and counting with only regular tune-ups and tire replacements! It's simply amazing! However, if you own one, it's important to keep up with regular maintenance!

After doing a lot of research on which vehicle to get for my 16-year-old, I finally decided on a Land Rover Discovery. I found one at a great price, and it's still running strong after 120,000 miles. Despite what other reviews may say, it's a very reliable vehicle. Those who have frequent repairs probably just don't know how to take care of a vehicle. My son loves the double sunroofs and the ability to drive his friends around town. This is a fantastic vehicle for any teenager!

I really enjoyed my 03 Disco until year 5. Unfortunately, after 90,000 miles (147,000 km), I had to replace every gasket in the engine. What started as a simple oil pan leak turned into a bigger issue, requiring the replacement of the head, timing assembly, and oil pan gaskets, as well as fixing radiator leaks and other miscellaneous hoses. The parts cost CAD $2000 and the labor cost $1,300. Additionally, the passenger window motor stopped working, the wheel well fenders faded prematurely, the engine knocked excessively even with regular 94 octane use, and the seat heater failed. Despite religious servicing, I had to sell the vehicle before the warranty expired. While I'm used to high maintenance vehicles, I won't be buying another Landrover.

My 2003 Land Rover Discovery has been an incredibly unreliable and frustrating vehicle since I purchased it new in August of that year. Despite religious maintenance, the vehicle has experienced a number of mechanical failures, including rear-end differential failure at 30,000 miles, power window failure at 55,000 miles, blown head gasket at 55,000 miles, and a cracked engine block at 78,000 miles. Despite these challenges, I remain confident in my ability to address any issues that may arise with my vehicle.

The Land Rover has good approach and breakover angles, but its poor departure angle may cause you to drag your rear bumper on steep inclines. However, it is very fun to drive, especially off-road. Unfortunately, the reliability of Land Rovers is not great and several major and minor repair problems may arise. On the bright side, thanks to the extended warranty, I have saved about $5,100 in total repair bills. Currently, it is back at the dealership again with transmission and engine problems, which may incur significant costs. Land Rovers are great if you have the financial means to cover the gas and repair/upkeep costs.

It's great to hear that you've had your '03 Disco for over 6 years now! It's such a capable off-road vehicle and can even tow a 4000 pound boat with relative ease (although the braking could be better). While you've had some major problems like a blown manifold gasket, blown axle seals, 02 sensor, and window motor, it's good to know that the latter two were relatively easy fixes. It's understandable that the gas mileage isn't the best (11-12 town, 13-15 hwy) for such a small vehicle, and it's a shame that it's not very comfortable inside.
