Land rover Discovery sport problems

The Land Rover Discovery Sport (internal code L550) is a compact luxury crossover SUV produced by British automotive company Jaguar Land Rover since 2014, under their Land Rover marque, and since 2017 their best-selling model.
Introduced in late 2014, it replaces the Freelander in a revised Land Rover range of vehicles, with Discovery joining Range Rover as a sub-brand. Contrary to its predecessor, the slightly larger car is also available in a seven seat layout.
The pre-facelift Discovery Sport is based on the JLR D8/LR-MS platform, customised for off-road applications, and is powered by a range of four cylinder petrol and diesel engines. It is the first Discovery introduced with a unibody structure.
Land Rover described the facelifted Discovery Sport as being based on the JLR PTA platform, a rebrand of the D8. It is also used by the Jaguar E-Pace and L551 version of Range Rover Evoque.

- Fire: 1
- VIN: SALCP2FX9LH
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: I drive a 2020 Land Rover Discovery Sport, which was serviced over three months. The certified dealership replaced the head gasket, fuel injectors, cylinder heads, and starter engines. The car was less than three years old and had never had any issues before service. The car had a sweet burning odor and very rough gear shifts post-service. Two days before the fire, the check engine light came on within the car. The dealership repeatedly assured me that the vehicle was safe to drive and the symptoms I experienced were normal. As soon as I pulled into my house from the doctor (less than an hour after I called the dealership to speak about the check engine light), I noticed a thin white smoke coming from my engine. I popped the hood, contacted the dealership, and they told me to watch it to see if it stopped smoking. I thought it was overheating. The engine erupted into flames, and the vehicle was almost a total loss. After researching the car, the Land Rover model seems to have had electrical elements recalled along with issues similar to the coolant system. My insurance agency has launched a fire investigation in an attempt to recreate the cause of the fire. Evidence is attached below.

I am thoroughly pleased with my new SUV. It drives exceptionally well, looks stunning, and boasts an overall high quality. Although there was an issue with turbo lag, I have learned to adjust my driving to avoid any unwanted turbo surges. However, I was disappointed with Land Rover's Incontrol Apps and Hotspot. The Incontrol Apps are often glitchy and I experience difficulty connecting to my iPhone 6 about 50% of the time. The JustDrive app, which is supposed to be the ultimate in hands-free technology, only rates a 3 out of 10. The Discovery 2016 has built-in Hotspot, In-Control Apps, and navigation that require a data plan with AT&T, costing less than $10 per month. For all of this to work, the SUV has a built-in cell phone with a SIM card. Unfortunately, the cell phone is only 3G and not 4G LTE. This means that my 4G LTE iPhone connects to my SUV, which only has 3G service. As a result, the 3G service is significantly slower than 4G LTE, which is a huge step backwards. Other automakers are putting hotspots in their cars with 4G, which is something I never would have guessed was not included in my SUV.

I recently got a loaner car with only 700 miles on the odometer and have driven it for less than a month, covering under 1000 miles. So far, I am really enjoying the car. I opted for the SE model with the Climate package, Navigation, and 11 speaker upgrade, and was pleasantly surprised to get the 19-inch alloy wheels at no extra cost. There are many things to like about this car, including its excellent handling, great all-around visibility, and the best side mirrors I have ever had. The seats feel firm and comfortable, and the interior feels spacious and luxurious. I drive 16 miles each way to work, with 8 miles on the highway and 8 miles on local roads, and I am getting an impressive 30-34 MPG combined without A/C, 27-30 MPG with A/C, and 25-28 MPG with a family of four and A/C running. These numbers are much better than the 20-26 MPG listed. The engine is very smooth, except when accelerating suddenly. The radio and speakers are fantastic at higher volumes and with HD stations. There are a few things that I don't like, such as the rear hatch feeling a bit flimsy, the panel below the glass squeaking a bit, and the lack of a CD player. The radio is just okay at lower volumes, and the ride is a little truck-like. Overall, I would suggest getting the higher trim level HSE to get many of the fancy features, as the SE does not get front fog lights. In an update from February 2020, I have had the car for three and a half years and driven it for 50,000 miles, and it has been trouble-free. I needed new brakes at around 35,000 miles and tires at 48,000 miles, but it still drives like new with no squeaks or rattles. The service costs are a little higher than normal, with my dealer currently charging $650 for a 10,000-mile service, but other than that cost, I have no complaints. In another update from February 2022, the car now has about 70,000 miles and has been completely trouble-free. I replaced the halogen headlights with LED headlights for the same cost as halogen replacements, which improved visibility on rural roads. It runs like a champ!

Vehicle year: 2017
Before purchasing the 2016 Discovery Sport HSE, I spent months researching and pricing with many dealers. As a long-time BMW customer, I was new to the brand. However, I found the smaller production British car to be exactly what I was looking for. During my search, I test drove several other cars, including the Audi Q5, Porsche Macan S, BMW X3 & X4, Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit, and Mercedes GLE300. After the test drives, I knew that the Land Rover Discovery Sport was the car that connected me to the road. It's important to note that JLR dealers outside of your 'market area' may not sell to you, so it's best to ask before negotiating. I was able to do all of my negotiating between two dealers via phone, email, and text, and I didn't even have to step inside the dealer's lot since I had already test driven the 2015 model earlier. When it comes to dealers, it's important to find one that matches your personality and needs. Some dealers can be snobby, snooty, or rude, while others are very helpful, professional, and patient. If you are financing or leasing, it's a good idea to find out what the best bank rates are before you negotiate. Some dealers are forthcoming and will tell you the finance rate or lease residual/money factors. I dealt with two dealers that were very transparent in their sales approach. The car has a slightly stiffer suspension than the other cars I test drove, but the connection to the road is more important, and the suspension is not jarring - it has manners. The most important standard feature on this car that makes the drive so good is Torque Vectoring by Braking. Torque vectoring makes high-speed turns, power acceleration into turns, and off-road handling a must-have for confidence if you are the driver type. I absolutely love this car - it makes me smile again, like I remember when I had my first 4WD BMW. The Discovery Sport is definitely for someone or a family that wants to travel almost anywhere safely and comfortably. Update: In 2016, new software was loaded for the Powertrain and Infotainment, which has changed the car entirely.Engine is now very quick to engage with no more laggy acceleration. The navigation is reliable 100% of the time. Fuel tank reading is now accurate. I absolutely love this car! UPDATE: 2017 - Updates for the seat rattles, In Touch controls, Navigation, Auto Start Stop, and service reminder were all done at no cost and it was excellent. It's great to see JLR changing their way of listening to customers and addressing issues with factory campaigns. The service department was very receptive to customer concerns and there was good follow-up after the service work by JLR in England via a written survey returned by post. Since I have less than a year left on my lease, I am considering another JLR product to replace the Discovery Sport. Whilst at the dealer for service, I had a chance to speak to my sales advisor and he pointed towards the Range Rover Velar or the full-sized Discovery that replaced the LR4. Both look very appealing and are a great way to step up from the Discovery Sport. So far, I am very happy with the Discovery Sport and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a driver's car (not a mushy soft car like everyone else).....

It hasn't been perfect, but overall, I absolutely love my car! There have been a few electronic issues, such as the rear mirror dip feature and the SIM card needing service, but despite that, it's a fabulous car. It's beautiful without being too flashy and is truly an ideal vehicle.

I think this car is great overall, but I was a bit disappointed when I bought a Land Rover. Although I know it is on the lower end of the spectrum, I still expected it to have everything my sister's Sonata has. Unfortunately, it doesn't have a blind spot warning, and we were told it was because we got the third row seats and they couldn't get the wiring in. Additionally, the material in the black package feels cheap, and every so often it pops out of place and I have to push it back in. There is also a lot of squeaking, and I can't change the preset from the steering wheel. Despite these issues, I still enjoy driving it and appreciate its other features.

I have been to the dealer many times, and unfortunately, I have had a few issues with my vehicle. After four months, the check engine light came on, and I had to replace the injectors and the black plastic on top of the license plate due to a squeaky noise. Around eight months later, the engine overheated when I was sitting in traffic, and I had to replace the cooling fan. Additionally, water got into the driver's rear marker light, and I had to replace it. The check engine light also came on randomly, but thankfully, the software was updated, and the problem was solved. On the 11th month, the rear passenger seats and plastic on the A pillar started making a squeaky noise, but the parts are being ordered and will be replaced in a few weeks. The driver's seat is not very comfortable, so I had to get an aftermarket seat cushion. I have driven this vehicle in all types of road and weather conditions for about a year now, and I have noticed a great amount of road noise in the cabin, as well as huge turbo lag and poor acceleration. However, there are a few pros to this vehicle, such as its good exterior design, and the heated/cooling seats work great. Additionally, there is a huge panoramic sunroof that I really enjoy.
Jorge O'Kon 2025-07-05
Vehicle year: 2017
I have experienced multiple issues with my car, including a coolant leak, failed water pump, and computer system failures. Despite taking it to the dealer several times, I was disappointed to find that not all the work was completed as promised, and the problems persisted. At 58,000 miles, one cylinder lost compression without warning, which was a frustrating experience. Although Jaguar Land Rover USA, LLC eventually replaced the engine after three months of back-and-forth, there were still issues with the engine after each repair. Unfortunately, Jaguar Land Rover refused to take any further action, leaving me without a car and without any rebates to help me purchase a new one. It was a disappointing experience, and I would caution others to stay away from these cars. Despite their enjoyable driving experience, Jaguar Land Rover's poor handling of this situation and lack of customer service ultimately led to an $8,000 loss for me.

I really liked the look of this car and that's what initially caught my attention. However, after test driving it, I found that it wasn't the right fit for me. I agree with the other reviewer who mentioned the turbo lag, which caused the car to jerk when starting or accelerating. This made it difficult to make turns at traffic lights. Additionally, when I parked the car, it would sometimes roll forward a few inches, which was concerning. Despite bringing it in for service, the issue was not resolved. While the car may be suitable for highway driving, I found it challenging to drive in town and get on the highway. As a result, I have decided to return to Lexus once my lease is over.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my Land Rover Discovery. I've taken it to the dealer twice now to address a shifting problem, but unfortunately, they couldn't find anything wrong. The problem is still there and they're blaming it on the software. As someone who has driven many different models from various manufacturers over the years, I don't think I can recommend owning a Land Rover Discovery.
