2017 Land rover Discovery sport problems

land rover logo

The Land Rover Discovery Sport (internal code L550) is a compact luxury crossover SUV produced by British automotive company Jaguar Land Rover since 2014, under their Land Rover marque, and since 2017 their best-selling model.

Introduced in late 2014, it replaces the Freelander in a revised Land Rover range of vehicles, with Discovery joining Range Rover as a sub-brand. Contrary to its predecessor, the slightly larger car is also available in a seven seat layout.

The pre-facelift Discovery Sport is based on the JLR D8/LR-MS platform, customised for off-road applications, and is powered by a range of four cylinder petrol and diesel engines. It is the first Discovery introduced with a unibody structure.

Land Rover described the facelifted Discovery Sport as being based on the JLR PTA platform, a rebrand of the D8. It is also used by the Jaguar E-Pace and L551 version of Range Rover Evoque.

Common 2017 Land rover Discovery sport problems

The Land Rover Discovery Sport 2017 has been reported to have several common problems by its owners. These issues range from interior quality, electrical faults, bodywork, engine, and safety concerns.

One of the most common problems is the higher-than-normal incidence of complaints about squeaks, rattles, and other interior quality issues with the Discovery Sport. While these might seem inconsequential, they can be difficult to solve, and if the car you're testing is rattly and it annoys you, don't assume it'll be an easy fix.

Discovery Sport owners have also reported quite a few electrical foibles, such as warning lights on the dashboard or odd behavior from the infotainment system. Therefore, it's essential to check all the electrics work and take note of any warning lights on the dashboard when considering purchasing a 2017 Discovery Sport.

Bodywork is another area where the Discovery Sport has faced issues, with a higher likelihood of scuffs, cracks, and other signs of damage incurred while off-road. Therefore, it's worth checking around the lower bodywork for any signs of damage if you're planning to buy a 2017 Discovery Sport.

Some examples built between 2-7 March 2017 could have a loose locking ring (which secures the fuel pump in the fuel tank), which could lead to fuel vapour escaping into the interior or fuel to leak out onto the ground. If you own a Discovery Sport built during this period, it's recommended to speak to a Land Rover dealer for further information and have the locking ring tightened correctly to prevent future issues.

The seatbelt pretensioner, which is part of the vehicle's safety restraint system, might not operate correctly on vehicles made between 12 July and 26 October 2016. If your car is affected, new pretensioners will need to be fitted.

An issue with chafing of the electrical wiring harness of Discovery Sport models manufactured between 9 July and 16 October 2015 could lead to a short circuit. If you think your car is affected by this, it'll need to be inspected by a technician for the necessary repair work.

There have been a couple of recalls regarding fuel leaks. The first could occur from the fuel rail in the engine bay of some examples made from 5 May 2016 to 31 January 2018, while the second is for chafed fuel lines on vehicles built between 5 March 2015 and 22 April 2016. If your car is affected, it'll need to be inspected by a technician at a dealer.

Historically, the Discovery Sport isn't a reliable car. At least, not according to the latest What Car? Reliability Survey, where it placed 30th out of 32 cars in the large SUV class with a score of just 80%.

In summary, the Land Rover Discovery Sport 2017 has faced several common problems, including interior quality, electrical faults, bodywork, engine, and safety concerns. Therefore, potential buyers should be aware of these issues and thoroughly inspect any 2017 Discovery Sport they are considering purchasing.

I bought my first LR Discovery in 2020 with 30,810 miles. As a disabled driver, I mainly drive locally and have never driven the car beyond 126 miles to Myrtle Beach, SC. Unfortunately, while driving back from a medical appointment 120 miles from my home, the car powered off with the low battery warning light as the only indicator, causing a loss of acceleration. The car was towed to a local repair shop recommended by roadside assistance. I was surprised to hear from the technician that the engine had locked, despite there being no issues with oil, oil leak, engine or anything else! I have made several calls and done research to identify recalls or similar issues, but unfortunately, several local Jaguar/Range Rover dealerships have been unable to assist or address the matter. As a cash purchaser of a 38k car, I feel let down. In conclusion, I would advise caution when considering a Land Rover Discovery purchase.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my 2016 Land Rover Discovery Sport. I've had a few issues with it, such as needing to replace the radiator hoses at 30,000 miles and currently experiencing some trouble starting the car after filling up with fuel. I've had the DMTL pump and gas cap replaced, but unfortunately the check engine light keeps coming back on. It's been a bit frustrating, but I'm hopeful we can get it sorted out soon!

  3. Eusebio Bogan 2024-04-27

I am sorry to hear about your experience with your Land Rover. It sounds like you have had a frustrating time with the gas mileage and electrical system. I understand how important it is to have a reliable car, and it must be disappointing to have a year left on your lease. Thank you for sharing your feedback with us, we will make sure to take it into consideration. If there is anything we can do to assist you, please do not hesitate to reach out.

If you're in the market for an SUV, I would recommend exploring other options. While my car has only been driven for 30,000 miles, I have had to replace the brakes twice and the ride quality is subpar. Additionally, the rear hatch inside panel has a tendency to fall off. Overall, I believe there are better SUVs available on the market.

  5. Kendall Runte 2024-02-23

I traded my Land Rover in for a Mazda CX-5. Although it may seem like an unfair trade, I actually got more car for less money. The CX-5 GT has more features than the Discovery Sport Se and its handling is far superior to the Land Rover. It's been almost a year now and I haven't regretted my decision for a second. While the Discovery Sport may not have been the right fit for me, I'm sure it has its own strengths and appeal to others.

Positive 2017 Land rover Discovery sport car reviews

  1. Estevan Krajcik 2025-01-08

I never thought I would be driving a Discovery Sport, until I actually got behind the wheel of one. When I went to Land Rover, I had intended to test drive the Evoque, but as soon as I saw the white and black Discovery Sport, I was sold. Despite hearing about some issues with the Discovery, I found that none of the complaints were true. I experienced no trouble with acceleration or rough starts, and any questions or concerns I had were promptly addressed by the salesperson. During the test drive, which lasted over 2 hours in the pouring rain, I was impressed by the vehicle's incredible response to the road. I wanted to see how it would perform in bad weather, and it did not disappoint. I am absolutely thrilled with my Discovery Sport.

  2. Gustave Boyle 2024-11-13

I recently bought this used car in Los Angeles and drove it all the way to Florida. Despite being warned that it might be a lemon, I found it to be the sweetest lemon I've ever driven such a long distance.

  3. Lazaro Friesen 2024-10-28

I purchased this car brand new in 2016 and had it maintained at the dealership for the first three years as part of a service package. After that, I decided not to purchase another service package due to the high cost. I occasionally drive this car off-road in the desert here in the UAE, and it performs exceptionally well, even with its normal road tires and 19-inch wheels. The car has had no mechanical issues, except for a small vibration noise on the round gear selector knob and vapor lock when refueling, which can be a bit annoying. I had to replace the battery after three years of usage, but the fuel economy has been great, especially on mostly highway drives. My kids love the glass roof, especially at night with a full moon. Overall, I am very happy with this car! As an update, after almost five years of ownership, the only issue I had was around 105,000 km when the turbo assembly had to be replaced, which is a common failure around this mileage on this engine. It was not a cheap replacement, but after that, the car is still very good on and off-road. It is currently clocking 125,000 km as I write this, and I still highly recommend this car! As of 2022, it is time for me to sell this car with 141,000 km since I got it new. It is still one of the best cars I have ever owned. Just like any other modern vehicle, regular maintenance is necessary to keep it worry-free. The only significant issue I had in six years of ownership was the turbo. It is a great family car.

  4. Mark O'Kon 2024-10-25

Very nice!!! Although, the road noise was somewhat annoying.

  5. Emilio Strosin 2024-10-06

Now you know why Land Rovers are expensive but popular. The suspension takes you anywhere, from the highway to cliff sides, just like in the commercials. It's comfortable, well-equipped, and easy on the eyes. It's pretty much a perfect vehicle.
