1993 Isuzu Trooper problems
The Isuzu Trooper is a full-size SUV that was produced by the Japanese automaker Isuzu between September 1981 and September 2002. In the domestic Japanese market it was sold as the Isuzu Bighorn, the car was exported internationally mainly as a Trooper but it also received several other nameplates including Acura SLX, Chevrolet Trooper, Subaru Bighorn, SsangYong Korando Family, Honda Horizon, Opel Monterey, Vauxhall Monterey, Holden Jackaroo, and Holden Monterey.
In total, there were two generations of this vehicle: the first, produced between 1981 and 1991; and the second (UBS) produced between 1991 and 2002, with a substantial refresh in 1998.
The Trooper began as a rather basic and somewhat underpowered on- and off-road vehicle, offered only with four-cylinder motor, four-speed manual transmission, and part-time four-wheel drive. The first generation evolved to add both amenities and luxuries, including optional air-conditioning, power windows, and a more powerful V6 engine. The second generation was even more refined and available in two-wheel drive as well as four-wheel drive.

Common 1993 Isuzu Trooper problems
Common Problems with the Isuzu Trooper 1993:
- Difficulty Starting from Cold: Another common issue is difficulty starting the engine from cold. This can be due to a malfunctioning one-way valve or a problem with the fuel pump.
- Alternator Problems: Some owners have reported issues with the alternator, where the battery dies while driving, even after replacing the alternator and some belts. This can also cause problems with the interior electronics, such as the turn signal lights not working, the heat not working when the engine is on, and none of the interior lights working.
- Fuel Pump Problems: The fuel pump is a common issue in the Isuzu Trooper 1993, with many owners reporting blown fuel pumps that require replacement. This can cause symptoms such as engine bogging down when stepping on the accelerator, black smoke, rough idles, and stalling when coming to a stop before the engine is warmed up.
- Transmission Light Flashing: A flashing transmission light can indicate a problem with the valve train due to varnish build-up or excessive engine oil consumption. This can cause a loss of power and reduced fuel efficiency.
- Diesel Engine Problems: The diesel engine in the Isuzu Trooper 1993 can have issues with the injectors, which may require replacement. This can cause symptoms such as rough idling, stalling, and a high idle speed.
- Electrical Problems: Some owners have reported issues with the electrical system, such as problems with the interior lights, turn signal lights, and heat not working when the engine is on. These issues can be caused by a variety of factors, including a faulty alternator, wiring issues, or problems with the electrical system's control module.
- Suspension Problems: The Isuzu Trooper 1993 can have issues with the suspension, including worn-out bushings, shocks, and struts. This can cause a rough ride, body roll, and slow progress in every model bar the more car-like V6.
- Steering Problems: Some owners have reported issues with the steering, including a loose or sloppy feel, which can be caused by worn-out steering components or a problem with the power steering system.
- Braking Problems: The Isuzu Trooper 1993 can have issues with the brakes, including worn-out brake pads, rotors, and drums. This can cause a soft or spongy brake pedal, reduced braking performance, and increased stopping distances.
- Body Rust: The Isuzu Trooper 1993 can be prone to body rust, particularly in areas such as the rocker panels, wheel wells, and door sills. This can cause cosmetic issues, as well as structural problems if left untreated.
Why did Isuzu stop making the Trooper?
SUV market changes and safety concerns doomed the Trooper
Unfortunately for Isuzu, mid-size classics like the Honda CRV and Toyota Rav-4 essentially cornered that market before they could find footing with their oddly conceived Vehicross and other compact models.
What engine is in a 1990 Isuzu Trooper?

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2002-12-26
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: REFER TO TSB# SB9601L005 / NHTSA# 049410 THIS PAST SUMMER I CHANGED THE SPARK PLUGS AGAIN. WHEN I PULLED THE OLD PLUGS, 4 HAD OIL SITTING ON THE TOP SIDE OF THE PLUGS AND THE PLUG BOOTS WERE COVERED WITH OIL. 2 WEEKS AGO, MY TROOPER STARTED BAD EVERYDAY, AND MOST OF THE TIME MY "CHECK TRANS" LIGHT WAS COMING ON, SO I HAD TO RESTART, AND MANY TIMES WHILE DRIVING FROM A STOP, THE "CHECK TRANS" LIGHT WOULD COME ON AGAIN, THUS DEFAULTING MY TRANSMISSION INTO 3RD GEAR, (PRETTY DANGEROUS WHEN YOU ARE TRYING TO GET THROUGH AN INTERSECTION FAST IN ORDER NOT TO GET INTO AN ACCIDENT, OR PULLING INTO TRAFFIC). LAST WEEK I PULLED THE PLUG WIRES AGAIN (OIL POOLED AGAIN). I PULLED ALL THE PLUGS, WIPED THEM CLEAN AS WELL AS THE WIRES AND ALSO CLEANED THE PLUG TUBES AS WELL. TROOPER RAN GREAT THEN. I CALLED 2 ISUZU DEALERS TO ASK ABOUT THE TSB WHERE IT REFERS TO OIL IN THE SPARK PLUG WELLS, BOTH DEALERS SAID A NEW WIRE KIT HAD TO BE INSTALLED TO SEAL THE OIL LEAK (FOR AN OIL LEAK?) I WENT AND BOUGHT A NEW "UPDATED" SET FOR $64.00. FROM WHAT I'M TOLD, THE NEW WIRE SET HAS A WIDER DIAMETER TO SEAL INSIDE THE TUBES BETTER. SATURDAY I INSTALLED THE NEW WIRES, AS WELL AS NEW SPARK PLUGS AGAIN THERE WAS OIL AGAIN ACCUMULATED WITHIN 1 DAY OF LIGHT DRIVING. YESTERDAY I PULLED THE WIRES FROM THE TUBES THAT HAD PREVIOUSLY BEEN POOLING THE OIL. NOT ONE DROP WAS FOUND- THE NEW WIRES WORK! WHY DIDN'T ISUZU PAY FOR THE NEW WIRES AND INSTALL THEM ON A RECALL INSTEAD OF A TSB WHERE IT IS MY RESPONSIBILITY TO PAY FOR THEIR MISTAKE? WITH ALL THE OIL POOLED INSIDE 4 SPARK PLUG WELLS AND ALL OVER THE WIRES, IT GIVES THE COIL A PATH OTHER THAN THE SPARK PLUG (TO THE ENGINE, WHICH IS CHASSIS GROUND)- WHICH HAPPENS TO BE WHERE ALL ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS ARE CONNECTED IN THE VEHICLE THUS CAUSING MAJOR PROBLEMS WHEN A SHORT CIRCUIT OCCURS. MY TROOPER IS RUNNING GREAT NOW, WITH NO APPARENT ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS IN SIGHT, AND NO OIL POOL ON THE PLUGS. TS

1993 Isuzu Trooper recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 1993 Isuzu Trooper.
- Manufacturer: ISUZU MOTORS LIMITED
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:CABLES
- Summary: ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, THE ACCELERATOR CABLE CAN STICK SO THAT THE ENGINE SPEED WILL NOT IMMEDIATELY DECREASE UPON RELEASE OF THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL.
- Consequence: THIS CAN CAUSE THE ACCELERATOR THROTTLE CABLE TO DELAY RPM AND VEHICLE SPEED REDUCTION FOR SEVERAL SECONDS AFTER THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL IS RELEASED, WHICH IN TURN, CAN LEAD TO A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE THROTTLE CABLE RUBBER BOOT. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON MAY 24, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT ISUZU AT 1-800-255-6727.

This has been the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. Living up in the mountains behind Anchorage, it's in 4WD half the year. Despite the steep terrain and lots of snow and ice in the winter, it always starts and never gets stuck. If you do regular maintenance on this vehicle, it will last forever.
-
This is the best truck I've ever had. It's really handy for a growing family.
-
I've had the rig for about 12 years now with more than 240,000 on/off road miles. It's been a reliable companion, and I've only had to take it to the shop for routine maintenance like changing the clutch and brakes. While it may not offer the same level of comfort as newer SUVs, it's a sturdy and capable vehicle that's perfect for off-road adventures.
-
I'm so happy with my Trooper! It has been such a reliable and tough SUV, with a bulletproof drivetrain and underpinnings. I've put it through its paces on tough Rocky Mountain trails at over 10,000 ft altitude, as well as on the highway and off-road, and it has never let me down. Even in the snow, it's an excellent vehicle. The only issue I had was with the underpowered heater for the car's size, but that's a minor inconvenience. Overall, I highly recommend the Trooper!
-
The performance and comfort of this SUV are truly unsurpassed. The feeling of safety that comes with the metal body is unbeatable. The brakes are incredibly responsive and the car starts up on the first try every time. It handles corners with ease and is extremely reliable. The car runs quietly and transitions smoothly from start to finish. The interior is well-designed with cubbies for everything you need. The exterior is in great shape and overall, this is a must-have SUV! I have absolutely no regrets about buying this vehicle and would buy another one without hesitation. The 4x4 component gives it a firm feel when driving, but I love the sporty feel that comes with the automatic stick. Isuzu really outdid themselves when they constructed this gem. If you're looking for an SUV that will go the distance, this is definitely the one for you!

I received this vehicle from a friend. Although it has a lot of space and comfortable seats, I would not recommend it due to some issues. The steering has a large turning radius, and there may be power steering problems. The engine (3.2 v6) struggles and sounds unpleasant, and it revs high on the highway, leading to poor fuel consumption. Additionally, there have been alarm problems. Overall, it may not be the best choice. Personally, I would prefer an American SUV, such as a Ford Explorer or Jeep Cherokee. However, please keep in mind that this is just my opinion and experience with this vehicle.

Hi there! I'm so excited to share my experience with my second Trooper! I bought it with 101,000 miles on it and it's been such a reliable vehicle. I've put over 20,000 miles on it in the past 8 months and it's still going strong! Of course, like any vehicle, it's had a few issues - the transmission needed new gaskets and the engine gaskets will need to be replaced at some point, but this is a known problem with Isuzus. I also had the shocks replaced because of body roll from old, worn-out shocks. Despite these minor issues, the body and interior are very solid - nothing rattles! Plus, I'm actually getting 19 mpg on the highway, which is great for an SUV. If you're considering a used SUV, I highly recommend the Trooper!

The truck rides well, but it bottoms out with a load or boat on the back. Unfortunately, the driver's seat lacks lower back support, and the fuel economy is poor. However, the exterior body has held up great, and the interior room is good. Although it has had some trouble with interior electrical and spark plug wires, as well as two oxygen sensors, it is still a reliable truck. The only downside is that it has a low resale value, and the parts are very expensive compared to other comparable models. Overall, it is a good and trusty truck!
