The Kia Sorento (Korean: 기아 쏘렌토, romanized: Gia Sorento) is a series of automobiles manufactured by the South Korean manufacturer Kia since 2002 through four generations. Debuting in February 2002, the first generation Sorento was a traditional truck-based body-on-frame SUV. All American Sorentos also came with dual front airbags and dual side-curtain airbags in the front and rear. An optional four-wheel drive system with low range received praise for adding to the vehicle's off-road ability.
It had two transmission options, a 5-speed manual or 4- and 5-speed automatic (pre-2005 models have a 4-speed automatic, whilst 2005 Sorentos came with a 5-speed tip-tronic style automatic). First generation Sorentos are equipped with a Hyundai-manufactured 3.5-liter 24-valve DOHC V6 engine producing 192 hp (143 kW) at 5500 rpm, and 217 lb⋅ft (294 N⋅m) of torque at 3,000 rpm. Common features of the first generation Sorento were 4-wheel disc brakes (standard on all models), optional anti-lock braking system (ABS), and a 21.1-gallon (79.9 litres) fuel tank.
There were two trim levels available for the Sorento: either the base LX or the up-level EX. Both models included an AM/FM stereo with a single-disc CD player and an eight-speaker audio system, dual front airbags and front and rear side-impact SRS airbags (side-impact front and rear SRS airbags for North American-market models ONLY), cloth seating surfaces, a power-adjustable front driver's seat, air conditioning, power door locks and windows, tinted windows, aluminum-alloy wheels, keyless entry, wood interior trim accents, a split-folding second-row rear bench seat, and monotone exterior paint as standard equipment. Features such as satellite radio (on later models), leather-trimmed seating surfaces, heated front seats, a ten-speaker premium audio system, cassette and CD players, an in-dash CD changer, power front bucket seats, seventeen-inch (17") aluminum-alloy wheels, a power sunroof, two-tone exterior paint, and a security system were available regardless of trim level choice.

The contact stated while her daughter was driving approximately 15 MPH, she activated the windshield wipers and the radio, and the vehicle started to stall. THE VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED. THE MANUFACTURER WAS NOT MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 53,900.

- Summary: AIR BAG IS OFF LIGHT COMES ON THE DASH FOR THE PASSENGER SIDE EVEN IF AN ADULT IS IN THE SEAT. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER 2 TIMES WHILE UNDER WARRANTY AND THE FIRST TIME THEY SAID THE COMPUTER JUST NEEDED TO BE RESET. THE SECOND TIME THEY SAID WE WERE NOT SITTING IN THE SEAT CORRECTLY. I TOLD HIM I WEIGHED 190 LBS THAT THE WHOLE SEAT WAS COVERED WITH MY BOTTOM. THEY SAID NOTHING WAS WRONG WITH THE SENSOR. I SHOWED THEM PICTURES OF MY PHONE SHOWING WE WERE DRIVING DOWN THE ROAD AND THE LIGHT CAME ON. THEY DIDN'T SEAM TO CARE. IT STILL MALFUNCTIONS ABOUT 80%, THE WARRANTY RAN OUT A WHILE AGO. THE LIGHT WILL COME ON WHILE YOUR SITTING STILL AND IT WILL COME ON IN THE MIDDLE OF DRIVING. IN SEPT 2014, WHILE WARRANTY WAS VOID DUE TO OVER 60, 000 MILES) I HAD TROUBLE WITH THE DASHBOARD ILLUMINATION LIGHTS WHEN THE HEADLIGHTS WERE TURNED ON. $1,000+ DOLLARS LATER, DIMMER SWITCH, INSTRUMENT CLUSTER, AND RHEOSTAT CIRCUIT WERE REPAIRED. IN DECEMBER 2015, STARTED TO HAPPEN AGAIN BUT NOW THE AIR BAG LIGHT CAME ON AND WON'T GO OFF. TOOK IN JANUARY, AND $275 MORE, REPLACED DIMMER SWITCH AGAIN AND CLEANED THE CONNECTION TO AIR BAG SENSOR. THREE DAYS LATER, THE AIR BAG LIGHT IS ON AGAIN. FURTHER INSPECTION AND IT IS DETERMINED THE THE "OCS" SENSOR NEEDS TO BE REPLACED TO THE TUNE OF $1900 FOR PARTS AND $200 FOR LABOR.

- Summary: ALMOST A YEAR AGO, I WAS DRIVING ON THE TURNPIKE WITH A POSTED 65 MPH WHEN MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT GOES ON AND THE ESC OFF LIGHT LIGHTS UP ON THE DASH. I STARTED LOSING ACCELERATION AND COULDN'T GO ABOVE 40 MPH. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED OVER AND CONTACTED THE GARAGE. THEY TOLD ME TO TURN THE CAR OFF AND RESTART IT. THE ESC OFF LIGHT WENT OUT AND I WAS ABLE TO ACCELERATE NORMALLY BUT, THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT STAYED ON FOR 2 MORE DAYS. EVERYTHING WAS FINE UNTIL 8 MONTHS LATER WHEN MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AND ESC OFF LIGHT LIT UP AGAIN AND I COULDN'T ACCELERATE PAST 40 MPH. HOWEVER, THIS TIME I HAD TO PULL OVER - TURN OFF THE CAR - RESTART MY CAR( 6 TIMES) TO TURN OFF THE ESC OFF LIGHT!!! TWICE THIS JULY THE SAME SITUATION HAPPENED AND I TOOK IT IN FOR SERVICE. OF COURSE ALL LIGHTS WERE OUT AT THE TIME. THERE WERE ERROR CODES ON THE COMPUTER BUT WHILE CONVERSING WITH THE TECHNICIANS THEY BELIEVE IT'S A FAULTY GAS PEDAL/ACCELERATOR AND NOT TIRE/BRAKE SENSOR CODES. I WAS GIVEN A QUOTE OF $350 FOR REPLACEMENT HOWEVER THIS IS A REAL SAFETY ISSUE AND I FEEL THE CONSUMER SHOULDN'T BE RESPONSIBLE FOR CORRECTING THIS PROBLEM AND IT SHOULD BE A RECALL ISSUE. MY PARTICULAR CASE HAS HAPPENED 3 TIMES IN LESS THAN A YEAR. OBVIOUSLY, THERE ARE MANY OTHER CONSUMERS HAVING THE SAME DEFECT ISSUE. IT'S NOT SAFE IF YOUR ONLY MEANS OF TRANSPORTATION CAN ONLY ACCELERATE TO 40 MPH ON A DANGEROUS ROAD TRAVELED BY COMMUTERS AND BIG RIGS GOING AS HIGH AS 80 MPH OR MORE. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2009 Kia Sorento.
- Manufacturer: Kia Motors America
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2006-2010 Sedona and 2007-2009 Sorento vehicles. Moisture may enter the Anti-lock Brake (ABS) Module and result in an electrical short.
- Consequence: An electrical short within the ABS Module may cause an engine compartment fire, even when the vehicle is turned off, increasing the risk of an injury.
- Remedy: Kia will notify owners, and dealers will install a relay in the main junction box to prevent power from being directed to the HECU when the vehicle's ignition switch is turned off, free of charge. The recall began June 5, 2020. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC186.

- Summary: Kia Motors Corporation (Kia) is recalling certain model year 2007-2010 Rondo, model year 2007-2011 Sedona, Sorento and Sportage, model year 2010-2011 Soul, model year 2008-2011 Optima, model year 2010 Forte, model year 2007-2009 Amanti, and model year 2009 Borrego vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Kia recalled 623,658 model year 2007-2010 Rondo and Sportage, model year 2007-2011 Sorento, model year 2007 Sedona, model year 2010-2011 Soul, and model year 2011 Optima vehicles. In September 2013, Kia informed the agency that it was adding an additional 356,719 vehicles to this campaign. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 980,377. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake-transmission shift interlock feature preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.
- Consequence: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of PARK without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Kia will send an interim notification to owners in May 2013. When parts are available, owners will receive a second notification and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. Owners may contact Kia at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's recall campaign number is SC098.

- Summary: CURT MANUFACTURING IS RECALLING CERTAIN TOW PACKAGE WIRING HARNESSES, PART NUMBER 56024, THAT CONNECT TOW VEHICLE LIGHTING CIRCUITS TO TRAILER LIGHTING CIRCUITS SOLD FOR USE ON CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2009 THROUGH 2011 HYUNDAI VERACRUZ AND KIA SORENTO VEHICLES. THE UNITS ARE NOT WATER-TIGHT AND MOISTURE CAN SEEP INTO THE CONVERTER MODULE AND DEFEAT THE MODULE'S INTERNAL CIRCUIT PROTECTION.
- Consequence: WITHOUT THE CIRCUIT PROTECTION, THE MODULE CAN OVERHEAT POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A FIRE.
- Remedy: CURT MANUFACTURING WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND REPLACE THE TOW PACKAGE WIRING HARNESS. THE REMEDY WILL BE PERFORMED FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL BEGAN ON OCTOBER 17, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CURT MANUFACTURING AT 1-715 831-8713.

This SUV is really quick! It revs high and will throw you back in your seat when you get on the gas. The ride is incredibly smooth, even over bumpy brick roads that I've been on. I took it on a 200+ mile road trip and was extremely comfortable. The stock stereo system isn't bad at all and would be more than adequate for most people. It's a really sharp looking SUV, and while the inside isn't as fancy as a Lexus or Mercedes, who cares if you're not trying to impress everyone with your fancy car? I've even carried up to 8 people in this thing, although two were in the seatless trunk area. The seats fold down really nicely to make a ton of cargo room. This SUV is definitely a great family hauler and would be perfect for long road trips or just tooling around town.

I recently traded in my Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer, which had all the bells and whistles. Please keep this in mind as I compare it to my new Sorento EX, which also has leather seats, a sunroof, a 6-CD changer, and more. In terms of gas mileage, the Expedition was only getting an average of about 16-17 mpg, while the Kia is currently getting 21-22 mpg for the same daily route to and from work. While the Sorento may lack the same amount of space as the Expedition, it is consistent with other mid-size SUVs. However, I do wish they had added about 4-6 inches in length to the cargo area to better accommodate larger items, such as an average baby stroller. That being said, the front of the car has plenty of room for me, even though I am above average in size, and the same goes for the passenger.

I'm so glad I test drove the KIA Sorento! It's been such a fun and comfortable ride, and it's been really dependable so far. This SUV has definitely changed my perspective on what a great SUV can be.

I traded my sedan for the Sorento. It's been great for transporting my bikes and dogs, including my 75 lb. Greyhound, as well as commuting to work. I specifically wanted a vehicle that sat higher than a car and had plenty of cargo room, and the Sorento has delivered. I typically drive a combination of city and highway and get a decent 22.5 mpg. Unfortunately, I have experienced some trouble with the passenger airbag. My brother, who weighs 140 lb., has ridden with me and the airbag sensor screen has shown it's on, but then a few minutes later it's off, which is concerning. Additionally, there's a rattle on the driver's side that the dealership fixed, but it has since returned.

Has anyone else experienced issues with their Sorento? I am feeling quite dissatisfied with mine. Despite having only 6000 miles on my 2009 model, it seems to be falling apart. I had to take it to the shop today for several problems, and while they were able to fix a warped interior panel that didn't fit from day 1, the suspension is still sloppy and the car pulls badly to the right. Kia claims that it's in proper alignment, but I'm not convinced. Additionally, the driveline jerks on starts and stops, making it feel like the rear end is about to fall out, and the headlights dim every time I hit the brakes. Kia says that this is just the way Sorentos are, but I'm not sure I believe them. If I weren't upside down in my loan, I would trade this thing in tomorrow.

This is a great vehicle with all the bells and whistles, but if you're commuting like I do, 120 miles a day plus up to 20 in errands on lunch, it's not very fuel-efficient. I find myself filling up every other day and gas prices are on the rise. I traded in my 8-year-old Hyundai Elantra because I have 3 kids, 2 in car seats and a 12-year-old who didn't fit in the back. The KIA is better, but still a tight fit with 2 car seats and a third child. The space isn't as spacious as I hoped for. I'm trading it in this weekend for a 4-cylinder car because I can't afford the gas. I'm averaging 18.3 mpg which is good for this vehicle, but I didn't realize how quickly it's used up. If I could afford the gas, I would definitely keep the vehicle.

I traded in my sedan because I wanted to sit higher due to blind spots. My mpg averages 21, especially if I keep my husband and teenage son out of it. Unfortunately, I am not at all pleased with the passenger seat sensor explanations. During my most recent trip, I was told that I do not weigh enough. At 140 pounds, I do not feel comfortable trusting the airbag system at all because of the sensor issue. Additionally, the transmission has already had to be serviced and the bulbs have already had to be replaced (both low beams -- in a 1-year-old vehicle -- and bulbs not released to be sold outside of the dealership at this time). It has been a major inconvenience. The sound system is also quite horrid. I will trade it as soon as I can without losing a fortune.

The issue I have been experiencing with this vehicle is with the passenger seat airbag. Despite five trips to the dealership, the problem has not been resolved. According to them, the airbag is not functioning because my wife does not meet the weight requirement. However, I find it hard to believe as she weighs just over 100 pounds. Overall, I am disappointed with the vehicle and concerned about our safety.
