Kia Sorento 2014 problems
The Kia Sorento (Korean: 기아 쏘렌토, romanized: Gia Sorento) is a series of automobiles manufactured by the South Korean manufacturer Kia since 2002 through four generations. Initially a compact SUV built on a body-on-frame chassis, the second-generation Sorento transitioned to a larger car-based platform which placed it into the mid-size crossover SUV class, and has been developed alongside the Hyundai Santa Fe.
First generation (BL; 2002)
2002–2006
Debuting in February 2002, the first generation Sorento was a traditional truck-based body-on-frame SUV. All American Sorentos also came with dual front airbags and dual side-curtain airbags in the front and rear. An optional four-wheel drive system with low range received praise for adding to the vehicle's off-road ability.
It had two transmission options, a 5-speed manual or 4- and 5-speed automatic (pre-2005 models have a 4-speed automatic, whilst 2005 Sorentos came with a 5-speed tip-tronic style automatic). First generation Sorentos are equipped with a Hyundai-manufactured 3.5-liter 24-valve DOHC V6 engine producing 192 hp (143 kW) at 5500 rpm, and 217 lb⋅ft (294 N⋅m) of torque at 3,000 rpm. Common features of the first generation Sorento were 4-wheel disc brakes (standard on all models), optional anti-lock braking system (ABS), and a 21.1-gallon (79.9 litres) fuel tank.
There were two trim levels available for the Sorento: either the base LX or the up-level EX. Both models included an AM/FM stereo with a single-disc CD player and an eight-speaker audio system, dual front airbags and front and rear side-impact SRS airbags (side-impact front and rear SRS airbags for North American-market models ONLY), cloth seating surfaces, a power-adjustable front driver's seat, air conditioning, power door locks and windows, tinted windows, aluminum-alloy wheels, keyless entry, wood interior trim accents, a split-folding second-row rear bench seat, and monotone exterior paint as standard equipment. Features such as satellite radio (on later models), leather-trimmed seating surfaces, heated front seats, a ten-speaker premium audio system, cassette and CD players, an in-dash CD changer, power front bucket seats, seventeen-inch (17") aluminum-alloy wheels, a power sunroof, two-tone exterior paint, and a security system were available regardless of trim level choice.

Common Kia Sorento 2014 problems
Based on complaints from owners of the 2014 Kia Sorento, several common problems have been reported:
- Engine Failures: Owners have reported widespread engine problems leading to failures around 70,000 miles. These engine issues are known to cause failures as the vehicle ages, with repair costs reaching around $7,000 if the engine fails. There is a recall for an engine bearing that can lead to engine failure, and Kia will replace engines on affected models for free.
- Peeling Paint: Another common issue is peeling paint, particularly on the roof and hood, reported within the first 75,000 miles. Repainting the affected areas is the solution, but it can cost around $1,200 per panel.
- Broken Door Lock Systems: Many Sorento models experience broken door lock systems around 50,000 miles. Both the door lock controller and actuators tend to fail over time. Replacing the door lock controller costs around $1,200, while each actuator replacement is approximately $120.
- Recalls: The 2014 Kia Sorento has had 5 recalls, some of which are more severe than other SUVs from the same year. The most serious recall involves engine bearings that can lead to engine failure. Other recalls include issues like the right axle failing and a fuel line that can leak, potentially causing a fire.
These problems highlight significant issues that owners of the 2014 Kia Sorento have faced, ranging from engine failures to paint defects and door lock malfunctions. Addressing these issues promptly and ensuring proper maintenance can help mitigate these common problems.
Is 2014 Kia Sorento a good used car?
Reliability 5/10 – The 2014 Sorento has a lot of engine problems. We recommend buyers avoid models from 2011–2016. We recommend models from 2017–2020, which are all more reliable. ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-05
- VIN: 5XYKTCA68EG
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Our 2014 KIA Sorento keeps burning through oil. We were told by the dealership to have an oil combustion chamber cleaning. We had bought the extended warranty and have maintained the recommended maintenance on this vehicle. This is a $700.00 (maintenance not covered by warranty). Come to find out, this cleaning might not solve our engine issue and our vehicle might continue to burn through oil. Or even fail the test, and we are the ones responsible for fixing the problem.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-02
- VIN: 5XYKWDA75EG
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: My check engine light came on so I took it to the dealership (10/02/24) and the code was P2190. They did the recall for the 23V652. It was completed and light was off. The light came back on that Thursday evening with the same code. I took it back to the dealership on Friday morning. They kept it over that weekend. It was first the fuel injector but they wasn't sure so decided to keep it and check it again when it was cool. I called Saturday for an update and stated they needed to keep it til Monday. I called on Monday and received a text that I didn't have any oil in the car. Which was not accurate because everything was checked with them on Tuesday and they had the car the entire weekend. They stated they replaced the oil and the engine light was off. They said the car was burning oil and I needed to replace the engine for 10k. None of this made any sense. The light came back on a few days later and I have been checking the oil every day and oil is still in the car. The same code had been displayed for the check engine light. "System too rich at Idle Bank 2". I have not had any problems in this car since I had. I am still checking the oil because I am nervous it will blow up while driving but this is my only transportation. I just wanted you all to look into it before I have to give this car up. Thanks (I paid $180 for a diagnostic with no resolve).

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-15
- VIN: 5XYKWDA73EG
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
- Summary: Left out for work one morning as normal. Everything was ok no lights no warnings no problems. I was driving approximately 25-30 mph when my speed began to decelerate, a knocking noise, the check engine and oil light came on and my vehicle just stopped. After about 10-15 mins I could restart the car and drive to a safe parking lot off the street. When I started the car back up the knocking sound was even worse. In the parking lot, all the fluids were checked and there was not one drop of oil in the engine. I took the vehicle to the shop and was told the engine was done. It would need to be replaced. The mechanic explained that there had been a problem with the engines burning up oil in the 2011-2014 Kia's. Thankfully, I was on a local road during morning travel, not the highway. I shudder to think of what may have happened if I suddenly started to decelerate at highway speeds and was hit by another vehicle.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-06-03
- VIN: 5XYKWDA71EG
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: when I purchased the vehicle the check engine light came on the day after. It would come on and off as I would start and turn off the vehicle. The salesman told me that the check engine light was still on because they had just serviced it and it needed to be reset. No driving problems occurred until a year later. I took the vehicle to be diagnosed three times by three different auto mechanics. There was a recall on the vehicle that is no longer a recall. The Kia dealership service department told me that I would have to pay thousands of dollars to do a engine breakdown to see what the root problem is. The vehicle will not drive far anymore so I do not drive it and I'm still paying for it.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-31
- VIN: 5XYKT3A66EG
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Check engine light started blinking then a lot of knocking started from the engine. How it won’t stay started and the knocking it’s a lot louder. Someone told me sounds like the engine bearings
EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-19
- VIN: 5XYKT3A66EG
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: The headlights and taillights are constantly going out on their own. Took car to dealership and they say it's fixed, but you don't leave the lot & the light is out again. Same issue has been happening since 2022. Driving on dark road and the lights just go out. This is definitely a safety issue that several people have complained about, but nothing is being done to rectify the situation. Car has been taken to dealership at least on 5 separate occasions. However, this last time they said there is no record of bringing the car for the lights. I even did a Google review. Why would the dealership not document service problems?
UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-25
- VIN: 5XYKTCA69EG
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: Whilst driving on the interstate, the vehicles engine shut off with no warning. Rpm and everything was as normal and the vehicle shut off with no gas power, nothing. Engine and oil lights started flashing heavily, engine started rattling. Upon checking battery all was normal, car started smelling of burning under the hood
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-01
- VIN: 5XYKT4A69EG
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
- Summary: The contact owns a 2014 Kia Sorento. The contact stated while driving at undisclosed speeds, the vehicle was consuming an excessive amount of oil. While approaching a stop, the vehicle shut off. The check engine warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who determined that the engine oil was backing up through the muffler and the vehicle was losing motive power. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed that the failure was due to the battery, alternator, and starter, and that an oil consumption test was needed. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact removed the battery. The contact noticed that rodents had been chewing on parts in the vehicle. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 152,000.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-07
- VIN: 5XYKW4A76EG
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: I was driving on the freeway in traffic with my 3 children returning home from a holiday weekend vacation, it was high 90's so the A/C was running and I had devices charging on the ports. We were 1.5 hrs into our drive and the vehicle failure came out of nowhere. Car has been in good condition and normal operation previously. Suddenly the entire dash flashed, flickered off then came back on with check engine light illuminated and battery symbol also on (very faintly), felt a minor kickback and car started slowing down until it stopped. I was able to get over and pull off to the shoulder to avoid incident but this could have easily turned into a very bad crash with a less experienced driver behind the wheel or if we had been going faster. Prior to this happening there was no warning of an issue with the vehicle - temperature check was in center between C and H, oil pressure was normal, no warning lights on dash, plenty of fuel and car was not due for an oil change for another 40 miles. Once I pulled over and stopped, turned off the car, it would not restart. Not enough power to turn over the engine. We had to call AAA and have the car towed home 35 miles. I had the vehicle towed to the Kia dealership and they are stating that it is not covered under a current recall or warranty extension and are seeking over $12,000 to replace the engine. I feel like my vehicle 2014 Kia Sorento SX V6 with 3.3L engine needs to be looked into for recall and warranty extension on the engine.
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-10
- VIN: 5XYKWDA74EG
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: Paint has peeled off and continues to peel off from many places on the vehicle. One large spot is on top where no debris from the road hits. Since this has started it has only gotten worse. I believe the entire car will be paint free if this situation is not rectified. Currently there are five different locations where the paint has peeled off. Color of my vehicle is Snow White Pearl.
SUSPENSION,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-30
- VIN: 5XYKWDA74EG
- Components: SUSPENSION,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,ENGINE
- Summary: Was driving to the store for groceries with my 2 young children, when my car just stopped accelerating and the engine seized up on a local road. Had noticed a ticking and knocking sound when accelerating a few prior and a weird sound coming from the suspension but it was dismissed by the dealer. Had the vehicle towed to my home and had to tow to dealership as it would no longer turn over at all. Received a recall notice but apparently it doesn't apply to my vehicle because I had oil, coolant and no leaks anywhere. Only had 127,000 mold and this is the 4th issue I've had with this vehicle. 1st was rats chewing all my wires, 2nd was the rear differential, 3rd fuel pump, and now this.
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-29
- VIN: 5XYKWDA74EG
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: My vehicle's SNOW PEARL WHITE paint is flaking off in large chunks on the windshield pillars (both sides), as well as chipping all over the body. The chipping began in 2018 (2 years after purchase) and the large chunks began in 2022. Paint chunks have flown off my car while driving on the highway. Missing paint is now leading to the body of the car rusting. My car is available for inspection. The dealership has inspected the problem and informed me I am not the first person they have encountered with this same problem. It is specifically common with SNOW PEARL WHITE PAINT. Bubbles are forming under the paint in other spots now, and I am worried about the possibility of it coming off in larger chucks on the hood- which could possibly create a projectile/vision obstruction. I have provided photos to the manufacturer in 2022 and started a case number. I have not heard back since.
STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-01
- VIN: 5XYKWDA7XEG
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: I have a 2014 Pearl White Sorento SX. After washing my car recently, two area showed up that have started to delaminate. I talked with my insurance company who came out and told me there are known problems with especially the Pearl White on Kia Sorento so they wouldn't cover anything. Unfortunately those two areas are spreading and three new areas are cropping up. Based on what I've learned since the insurance company informed me of the problem, other Pearl White Sorento owners (2014 and other years) are experiencing continuing delamination. It seems highly likely the delamination will only continue to get worse which will severely impacts the value of the car. I spent several thousand getting an extended warranty that is still good through 125000 miles, with the thought that, in addition to providing protection from a significant problem with the car (e.g., engine, transmission, etc.) it would also increase the value when I decide to sell. The warranty does not cover paint (I don't believe any extended warranties do). I am sure that I've now lost 25-50% of the value of the car which is very, very upsetting. I haven't contacted the dealer I had been going to because they let me drive my car off the lot after servicing it and they forgot to put oil in. Thank god I had an inspection appointment the next with a local shop who showed me the problem. The paint problem is obviously a latent defect. I believe Kia should take responsibility for the problem, but I am fairly sure they won't unless there is a recall. So I am hoping that with enough complaints a recall will be issued. Thank you for your time taking my complaint.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-13
- VIN: 5XYKT3A62EG
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,AIR BAGS,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Every light is on in the dash compartment. Power steering goes in and out. Brake lights not working even after being replaced. Car stuck in park unable to put into reverse. ABS/ Airbag light showing- ABS Sensor replaced and still not working Recall in 2022. Kia repaired vehicle and now that same issues are occurring Kia refuses to even look at vehicle without payment of 180.00 to just LOOK!

Don't forget to bring a battery charger with you!

This is my 14th car and my first Kia. I've owned mostly Fords and Toyotas in the past. After test driving virtually all of the competition, I settled on the Sorento. It offers the best combination of size, handling, quiet ride, technology, cargo layout (5-seater) and V6 option. The lengthy warranty helped me make the decision because I'd never paid any attention to Kia in the past and reliability was an unknown. I've driven it about 2,500 km and so far, I'm delighted.
-
I was tired of spending thousands and decided to get a Kia. I absolutely love it so far! It's very dependable and drives great. After reading the reviews, it was an easy decision!
-
Comfortable and looks great! I'm so glad to hear that you love the interior. The controls are very easy to use, which is always a plus. While the fuel mileage may not be the best, it's great to hear that using higher grade fuel has helped you get better fuel mileage. And the pick up once the fuel pedal is pressed is awesome - this car really gets on it fast! I'm also happy to hear that the ride is very comfortable and quiet. It sounds like your car is loaded with all the features, and the sound system is far above normal. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

I recently purchased a Kia from a Cadillac dealership that was about a year old with only 3500 miles on it. The price was a steal at $8000 below sticker! I have been driving it for the past 4 months and it has been an absolute pleasure. The ride is excellent, the handling is good, and the gas mileage is superb. It is also very comfortable and comes with a lot of great features such as a panoramic sunroof, heated and cooled seats, power liftgate, power folding mirrors, navigation, Bluetooth, music hard drive, dual power seats, side radar, 3rd seat, and rear A/C. I have been getting an impressive 24-25 mpg with regular driving around the city and 29-30 on the road. Overall, I am extremely satisfied with my purchase and would highly recommend this car to anyone looking for a reliable and comfortable ride.

This car has had several issues over the years, including a transmission replacement, a back-up screen replacement, and difficulty identifying the source of a battery drain. Despite replacing the battery twice in one year, the car still requires intermittent jump starts.

I am experiencing issues with paint falling off my Kia vehicle. I am confident that this issue can be resolved with the right approach. However, I am disappointed with my experience so far and it has impacted my decision to consider purchasing a Kia again in the future.

I purchased my used Kia Sorento for 17 thousand dollars 1.5 years ago. Unfortunately, the rod bearing failed during my commute to work, leaving me stranded. Kia quoted me 22 thousand dollars to replace the engine. Despite this extensive issue, Kia has not offered an extended warranty for this particular model. However, I am confident that I made the best decision at the time of purchase based on the information available to me.

I had a great experience with my 2012 Sorento, so I decided to trade it in for a 2014 model. However, I have been having some trouble with the auto-dim feature of the instrument cluster, which makes it difficult to see the speedometer needle at times. Despite my concerns, Kia has not been very helpful and claims that the feature is working as designed. Unfortunately, this issue is not covered by the warranty, and Kia America has refused to address the matter. I am not alone in this, as 7 others have filed the same complaint with the National Safety Board. I am planning to get a new car soon, and I am considering a 2016 or 2017 model from a different brand. I recently purchased a Toyota Highlander, and I have had no issues with reading the speedometer. It is unfortunate that Kia chose not to address the issue and was not very customer-friendly. I feel much safer in my new vehicle.

I have been trying to get Kia to fix the faulty paint on my Sorento for over two months now. I contacted the dealership where it was purchased, but they told me that I was out of the warranty period. I believe that this issue should be covered, as it is clear that the paint is faulty and just peeling off. The spot is right above the windshield on the passenger's side, and the paint is chipping down to the primer. It seems that the paint and primer are not bonded properly. I have noticed that there are tons of complaints about this issue online. I spoke with customer service through the 800# and my case was handed to District Manager Steven Kang. Although he offered to fix the roof if I paid half the cost, which their estimate was over $300 out of pocket for me, I feel that this shows they know the paint is bad. I have asked to speak to Mr. Kang on numerous phone calls, but he refuses to talk with me. As a customer service manager, I believe it should be my right to speak with him concerning his decision. However, he will not take my call. I have since been escalated to another group, but due to my work schedule, I could not take a call until after 5:30 pm. Unfortunately, they contacted me prior to this, and I have returned the call but still haven't received a call back in about a week now. I am still seeking a solution to this issue. I believe that a vehicle that is just over three years old should not have the paint falling off it, and that is unacceptable. I have spoken to several reps and have documentation of our conversations, so when this goes to a higher level, I will have names and employee extensions to quote. I hope this issue is resolved soon. I would not recommend a Kia vehicle to anyone due to this issue.
