The Kia Sorento (Korean: 기아 쏘렌토, romanized: Gia Sorento) is a series of automobiles manufactured by the South Korean manufacturer Kia since 2002 through four generations. Initially a compact SUV built on a body-on-frame chassis, the second-generation Sorento transitioned to a larger car-based platform which placed it into the mid-size crossover SUV class, and has been developed alongside the Hyundai Santa Fe.

First generation (BL; 2002)

2002–2006

Debuting in February 2002, the first generation Sorento was a traditional truck-based body-on-frame SUV. All American Sorentos also came with dual front airbags and dual side-curtain airbags in the front and rear. An optional four-wheel drive system with low range received praise for adding to the vehicle's off-road ability.

It had two transmission options, a 5-speed manual or 4- and 5-speed automatic (pre-2005 models have a 4-speed automatic, whilst 2005 Sorentos came with a 5-speed tip-tronic style automatic). First generation Sorentos are equipped with a Hyundai-manufactured 3.5-liter 24-valve DOHC V6 engine producing 192 hp (143 kW) at 5500 rpm, and 217 lb⋅ft (294 N⋅m) of torque at 3,000 rpm. Common features of the first generation Sorento were 4-wheel disc brakes (standard on all models), optional anti-lock braking system (ABS), and a 21.1-gallon (79.9 litres) fuel tank.

There were two trim levels available for the Sorento: either the base LX or the up-level EX. Both models included an AM/FM stereo with a single-disc CD player and an eight-speaker audio system, dual front airbags and front and rear side-impact SRS airbags (side-impact front and rear SRS airbags for North American-market models ONLY), cloth seating surfaces, a power-adjustable front driver's seat, air conditioning, power door locks and windows, tinted windows, aluminum-alloy wheels, keyless entry, wood interior trim accents, a split-folding second-row rear bench seat, and monotone exterior paint as standard equipment. Features such as satellite radio (on later models), leather-trimmed seating surfaces, heated front seats, a ten-speaker premium audio system, cassette and CD players, an in-dash CD changer, power front bucket seats, seventeen-inch (17") aluminum-alloy wheels, a power sunroof, two-tone exterior paint, and a security system were available regardless of trim level choice.

Common 2012 Kia Sorento problems

The 2012 Kia Sorento has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. One of the most significant issues is engine failure, which has been reported in nearly half of the complaints registered with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Another common problem with the 2012 Kia Sorento is airbag issues. Airbag system warning lights that randomly activate unnecessarily are frequently reported, but no recall has been issued, leaving buyers with a repair bill that may be in excess of $2,000.

Paint quality also seems to be poor on some 2012 Kia Sorentos, with many owners reporting peeling and an easily damaged finish. These paint issues have been noted on both plastic and metal body panels, and are not confined to a particular factory paint color.

The 2012 Kia Sorento's air conditioning system is also a common source of complaints, with owners reporting inadequate cooling, intermittent functioning, or outright failure of the air conditioning compressor. Failed or malfunctioning heat and ventilation system controls are not uncommon, and navigation systems have also been known to fail.

In summary, the 2012 Kia Sorento has several common problems, including engine failure, airbag issues, poor paint quality, headlight problems, and air conditioning system failures. These issues have led to multiple recalls and an open NHTSA investigation, and can result in significant repair costs for owners.

  • Remedy: Kia will notify owners, and dealers will replace the brake-shift interlock mechanism, free of charge. The recall began on November 9, 2015. Owners may contact Kia customer service at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's number for this recall is SC124.

Negative 2012 Kia Sorento car reviews

  1. Arely Cormier 2024-08-27

I like my Kia Sorento, but I don't love it. It handles great and has decent storage in the back, but I have noticed some areas where it could be improved. The mileage has been a bit of a disappointment, but we have been able to keep up with maintenance and haven't had any major repairs in 102,000 miles. While my kids have mentioned that the backseat could be more comfortable, we have still enjoyed our time in the car. The front and back of the car look sharp, but the side is a bit boring. Overall, I have mixed feelings about the vehicle and would consider other options if I had to make the decision again.

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my Sorento. I bought it with 100,000 miles on it and unfortunately, I've had a few issues with it. I had a hose burst and overheat the engine, which left me stranded. After getting that fixed, a couple more hoses burst. Then, the crankshaft position sensor went bad and the car wouldn't start. I was able to replace it myself for just $80. However, the next day, the sensor went bad again and left me stranded at a gas station. Every once in a while, the RPMs drop and the motor shakes for about 5-10 seconds before revving back up. Despite these issues, I'm still hopeful that I can get it fixed and enjoy driving it again. Thanks for listening!

The engines manufactured by Kia from late 2010 through 2014 have been known to have issues, particularly with the direct fuel injection models. While there is a recall/extended warranty in place for these models, it is rare for them to last beyond 100k miles. The multiport injection models are essentially the same engine with a slight difference in injector placement, and they too have a tendency to fail before reaching 100k miles. Unfortunately, Kia is not providing any assistance with the $6000.00 engine replacement cost for my 2012 Sorento with 97000 miles on it, despite the original powertrain warranty being 10 years or 100k miles. Although I have had a negative experience with Kia, I am confident that other car manufacturers offer reliable options. For instance, my Nissan Xterra had 212k miles on it and still runs great. I sold it to a family friend in need. While I may have been mistaken in my belief that Korean cars are a good value, I have learned from my experience and will not be purchasing another Kia in the future. Unfortunately, five months after the engine replacement, the check engine light has come on, indicating a problem with the door inside the intake manifold. While this is not related to the engine replacement, it will cost me an additional $700.00 to replace the intake manifold. Despite these setbacks, I remain optimistic and will continue to take care of my car to ensure its longevity.

The car has unfortunately experienced several issues, including a deformity in the factory windshield, a broken headrest, a recall on the drive shaft, a broken tail lift, two windshield replacements, a defective engine with an outstanding recall, and both rear door handles snapping off. These issues have been frustrating, and I have decided that Kia is not the right brand for me. I would not recommend it to others.

  5. Frederik Kling 2024-05-16

I am sorry to hear about the issues you faced with your 2012 Sorrento. It must have been frustrating to require an entire engine replacement after only 8 months of driving. Although the repair was eventually covered under warranty, it sounds like the process was not as smooth as it could have been. It is understandable that you felt frustrated having to follow up daily for updates on repairs and that it took a month for your vehicle to be ready. Additionally, it must have been inconvenient to have the breakdown occur in another city 4 hours away from your home and to be expected to drive 8 hours round trip to pick it up. I hope that your experience with KIA improves in the future. Thank you for sharing your feedback with us.

Positive 2012 Kia Sorento car reviews

  1. Louisa Gutmann 2025-01-09

The car is not only good looking, but also has great driving experience. The fit and finish is incredible and it is better than Toyota in many aspects. The reviews speak for themselves. The new 4cyl. GDI engine has plenty of spunk and even though the gas mileage may be the same for the 6 cyl., it is not worth paying 5K more for it. In my opinion, it is better to spend that money somewhere else.

  2. Emilio Klocko 2025-01-07

I'm glad I got the 6cyl version. I've heard that the 4cyl version has significantly less power, but virtually no difference in MPG. I drive daily in both city and highway conditions, and it delivers between 23 and 24mpg overall. On highway-only road trips, it gets about 28mpg. I consider this good for the size and weight of the vehicle. I've had it for almost a year, and it does well on the snowy/icy Minnesota roads. The heated mirrors and parking assist 'tipping' of the mirrors are great features. I also love the push-button start--I never have to get out my keys--the button on the door handle locks and unlocks the car. The heated and cooled seats are so nice for that instant need for heat or cooling. It would be nice to have at least one more USB port, though. Some people say Kia has a 'cheap' feel, but I don't think so. The seats are comfortable and it's SO versatile--you can fit up to 6 passengers besides yourself (7 if they're small and you cheat a little), OR you can fold down the seats and have as much room for hauling as a pickup with a topper. As of 2020, my Sorento has 102,000 miles on it and I still love it. I recently replaced the backup camera for $112, but other than that, it has been very reliable. I plan to keep it for many years to come. The touch screen can be a bit dim in very cold winter weather (Minnesota), but overall the car has been very reliable. In warm weather, it gets an average of 28 MPG and 22 MPG in cold weather. As of January 2024, the car has 118,000 miles and still looks and drives like new. It has been used as a loaner for family members when their cars are laid up. Overall, it's been a great car!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with the Sorento. I recently traded in my Ford Expedition EL for the Sorento since I no longer needed a huge gas guzzler. I was a bit concerned about comfort, but I have to say that I've driven the Sorento on long trips and it's actually quite comfortable. One of the things that really sold me on this vehicle was the generous warranty and the fact that it's built in the U.S. However, I did find that the second row is a bit cramped due to the presence of the third row. So, for my next Sorento, I won't be getting the third row since I don't really need it. Overall, the Sorento does a great job of towing a boat and trailer weighing 2500 pounds, although the braking can be a little harder. Thanks for listening!

  4. Edd Rau 2025-01-01

I recently traded in my BMW for a KIA Sorento that I purchased from my future brother-in-law, Mike Light. I have bought many cars over the years and have often left feeling anxious, wondering if I made the right decision. However, this time was different. I didn't feel that way at all. I got the same great deal that some of my co-workers have received, and I couldn't be happier with my purchase. The only thing I miss is having the car tell me the temperature outside. I opted for the 4-cylinder model without all the bells and whistles, which would have been awesome, but unnecessary. This SUV drives smoothly, is roomy, and great on gas!

  5. Giovani Bayer 2024-11-11

After looking at the CR-V and Rav4, we decided to purchase the Sorento. It won us over with its better warranty, features, and more rugged styling (at least in our opinion). We were able to get a great deal (as can just about anybody) and made sure to follow the requirements to uphold the warranty to the letter. Long story short, it's an amazing value and we haven't had any issues so far. We've put 10,000 miles on it in just three months, taking long trips and hauling lots of cargo. It's proven to be very comfortable, averaging about 25-26 mpg on the highway and about 20 mpg in the city. While Kia's advertised 32 mpg can be achieved, we've found it can only be done while driving 60-65 mph on a steady, flat highway. I would definitely buy it again!
