Common 1995 Nissan 200sx problems

Based on the information provided in the sources, here is a detailed list of common problems with the Nissan 200SX 1995 based on complaints from owners:

  • Oil Consumption: Oil consumption issues in the 200SX can stem from worn piston rings or valve seals. Monitoring oil levels and addressing worn components promptly can help mitigate this problem.
  • Overheating: Overheating in the 200SX is often linked to a malfunctioning radiator or thermostat. Regularly checking the coolant level and ensuring proper cooling system function is essential to prevent overheating issues.
  • Transmission Problems: The 1995-1998 Nissan 200SX (S14) had a common issue with the transmission, particularly the automatic transmission, which was prone to failure under high-performance driving conditions. Upgrading to a stronger aftermarket differential gear and adding a transmission cooler can help prevent transmission overheating and breakdown.
  • Brake Master Cylinder: The 1991-1993 Nissan 200SX faced problems with the brake master cylinder, leading to decreased braking performance due to brake fluid leaks. Replacing the stock master cylinder with an upgraded aftermarket version or regular maintenance can prevent this issue.
  • Fuel Pump Failure: The 1994 Nissan 200SX experienced fuel pump issues due to a weak internal motor, causing engine stalling or failure to start. Upgrading to a more durable aftermarket fuel pump can help prevent this common problem.
  • Rust: All S13 models were prone to rust, especially around the wheel arches and rocker panels. Regular rust inspection, applying rust inhibitors, and sealing affected areas can prevent rust from becoming a severe issue.
  • Power Steering System: Many drivers reported a whining noise from the power steering pump in the S13, attributed to a failing pump or low fluid levels. Regular inspection and replacement of worn components can prevent power steering issues.

By addressing these common problems through regular maintenance, timely repairs, and upgrades to certain components, owners of the Nissan 200SX 1995 can ensure a smoother driving experience and prolong the lifespan of their vehicle.

I WOULD HAVE BEEN UNHURT HAD THE AIRBAGS NOT DEPLOYED. I REAR-ENDED ANOTHER CAR DUE TO SUN GLARE. I HAD NO IDEA AIRBAGS CAUSED SUCH INJURY AND I HAVE NEVER RECEIVED A RECALL NOTICE OR ANY OTHER WARNING ABOUT THIS. THE AIRBAGS ALSO BROKE MY STEERING WHEEL AND MY WINDSHIELD. TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2004-06-03
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: I TRIED TO PURCHASE TWO FRONT TIRES AT COSTCO, BUT WAS TOLD BY THE GENERAL MANAGER 'CHRIS MOORE' THAT THEIR POLICY IS ONLY TO MOUNT ONE OR TWO TIRES WHEN PURCHASED ON THE REAR. THEY REFUSED TO MOUNT THE TIRES ON THE FRONT AND INSISTED THAT THEY MOUNT MY TWO REAR TIRES BY DIFFERENT MANUFACTURERS ON THE FRONT. ONE TIRE IS A GOODYEAR RS AND THE OTHER A MICHELIN X, BOTH 185X65X14 ON A FRONT WHEEL DRIVE NISSAN SE. I INSISTED THAT TWO DIFFERENT BRANDS WITH POORER TREAD WOULD AFFECT STEERING AND HANDLING, BUT COSTCO REFUSED TO SELL AND MOUNT THE TIRE. I OFFERED TO SIGN A WAIVER BUT WAS TOLD BY THE STORE MANAGER THAT MICHELIN HAD A POLICY AND THAT THEY HAD TO HONOR IT FOR SAFETY. I GUESS THAT COSTCO OR ANY STORE CAN SET NHTSA POLICY THESE DAYS. ON THE COSTCO WEB SIGHT, IT STATES THE FOLLOWING: "WHEN BUYING JUST TWO NEW TIRES, SHOULD THEY BE PUT ON THE FRONT OR REAR? WHEN YOU SELECT A PAIR OF REPLACEMENT TIRES IN THE SAME SIZE AND CONSTRUCTION AS THOSE ON THE CAR, YOU MUST PUT THEM ON THE REAR AXLE. A SINGLE NEW TIRE MUST BE PAIRED ON THE REAR AXLE WITH THE TIRE HAVING THE MOST TREAD DEPTH OF THE OTHER THREE." COSTCO GENERAL MANAGER 'CHRIS MOORE - 410-379-3103; FAX 379-3117 THIS WAS AT THE 7077 ARUNDEL MILLS CIRCLE STORE IN HANOVER, MD 21076. PLEASE ADVISE IF THIS IS SANCTIONED BY DOT. THIS IS CONTRARY TO TIRE POLICY FOR MANY YEARS IN THE PASS AND MY MANY YEARS OF PERSONAL DRIVING EXPERIENCE CONCLUDES THAT STEERING TRACTION AND BALANCE OUT WEIGHS OTHER CONSIDERATIONS. I IMMEDIATELY WENT TO SAMS CLUB AND PURCHASED THE 2 MICHELIN X TIRES AND MOUNTED THEM ON THE REAR WITHOUT QUESTION. WALMART ALSO WILL MOUNT TIRES WHERE THE CUSTOMER WANTS. THE COSTCO POLICY APPEARS TO TRY AND FORCE CUSTOMERS TO BUY 4 TIRES WHEN ONLY 2 ARE REQUIRED. *JB

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2003-08-01
  • VIN: 1N4BB42D7SC
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: HIGH PRICED REPAIRS-I'VE ONLY HAD THE CAR FOR 2 YRS AND I BELIEVE I'M THE SECOND OWNER. I BOUGHT IT USED. ITS A 1995 NISSAN 200 SX SE-R WITH 108K MILES AND I'VE HAD MORE PROBLEMS WITH IT THAN I BARGAINED FOR. EVERY MONTH IT'S SOMETHING NEW WITH THE CAR. I'M RUNNING OUT OF PATIENCE AND MONEY GETTING THE CAR FIXED AND FINANCIALLY I CAN'T AFFORD ANOTHER CAR RIGHT NOW NOT TO MENTION THE REPAIRS ON THIS ONE. TOTAL I'VE PROBABLY SPENT WELL OVER $2000 IN THE TWO YEARS THAT I'VE HAD IT. MOST RECENTLY, I'M HAVING TO REPLACE THE CLUTCH AND BOTH CV JOINTS, THE TRANSMISSION SEAL, MY PASSENGER SIDE DOOR LATCH (THAT ALL OF A SUDDEN DECIDES TO WORK ON ITS OWN) AND MY SPEED SENSOR. I'M FINDING MYSELF PUTTING MORE MONEY INTO THIS CAR THAN I CAN AFFORD. TWO YEARS AGO I HAD TO REPLACE THE FRONT BREAKS AND THE LEFT ROTOR. LAST YEAR I REPLACED THE ALTERNATOR, STARTER, BATTERY, ONE O2 SENSOR (I HAVE TWO), THE CATYLLITIC CONVERTER AND THE LINKAGE WITH MY WIPERS (THANK GOODNESS THAT WAS A RECALL AND THE MONEY DIDN'T COME OUT OF MY POCKET). I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER NISSAN AGAIN!! I'M SPENDING WAY TOO MUCH MONEY JUST TO KEEP IT ON THE ROAD. I'VE GOT NEW PROBLEMS MONTHLY AND THERE IS NOTHING I CAN DO ABOUT IT. THIS MODEL WAS ONLY OUT A FEW YEARS AND DISCONTINUED. IT'S HARD FINDING PARTS FOR MY CAR BECAUSE IT HAS CERTAIN PARTS THAT ARE SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT FROM THE OTHER MODELS, THEREFORE MAKING ME SPEND MORE MONEY. IF I KNEW THAT THIS WAS A "SPECIAL/PROJECT" CAR, THEN I WOULDN'T HAVE BOUGHT IT. I'M RUNNING OUT OF MONEY TO FIX THIS CAR AND I WANT CONSUMER AFFAIRS TO KNOW THAT I'M FED UP WITH NISSAN AND I HONESTLY FEEL LIKE I SHOULD HAVE SOME KIND OF COMPENSATION FOR ALL THIS. ITS JUST RIDICULOUS.*AK

  • Summary: ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON APPROXIMATELY 6/30/97 AND AGAIN 4 WKS AGO DEALERSHIP CHECKED,STATED NO PROBLEM. ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON 5/22/01 AND ON 5/27/01 CAR DID NOT START. PER PEP BOYS ENGINE VALVES BURNED OUT. AIRBAG LIGHT CAME RT AFTER LEFT DEALERSHIP AFTER HAVING THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM SERVICED BECAUSE DASHBOARD PANEL WENT BLACK AND INTERFERENCE WITH ALARM OPERATION. RETURNED TO DEALERSHIP AND ADVISED AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON WAS NOT ON PRIOR TO VISIT. THEY CHECK AND ADVISED COMPUTER CHIP WAS BAD AND COST $800 TO REPLACE. REFUSED RESPONSIBILITY. I TOOK THE CAR IN 11/2000 FOR OVER $800 IN REPAIRS, INCL 90,000 MILE MAINTENANCE WORK EVEN THOUGH CAR ONLY HAD 84000 MILES. WORK INCLUDED RT CV JOINT REPLACEMENT. WITHIN 2 HOURS RT TIRE WAS FLAT. I PAID FOR TOWING TO DEALERSHIP, ADVISED JUST HAD WORK DONE ON THE RT SIDE AND THEY REFUSE OWNERSHIP. POINTED OUT THAT THE TIRE WAS SHINY, LOOKED LIKE SOME CHEMICAL BURNT ON AND THERE WAS STEAM/SMOKE FROM TIRE. HOW IS IT THAT AN AIRBAG NEVER BEFORE DEPLOYED CAN GO BAD. HOW IS IT THAT THE PANEL CAN GO BAD AND THE CAR IS LESS THAN 3 YEARS OLD. THE TRONCALLI NISSAN DEALERSHIP WILL NOT TAKE OWNERSHIP OF DEFECTIVE PROBLEMS.

Negative 1995 Nissan 200sx car reviews

  1. Quinn Waters 2024-11-06

I paid $4k for my '95 200SX SE with 130kmi on it. I was a bit worried when I drove it home over bumpy roads due to the squeaking and clunking, but as days went by and my mechanic assured me it was fine, I slowly got used to it. Now, with 150kmi on it, I've replaced the clutch, front struts/shocks, and am now looking at replacing the left front axle and rear struts. However, if I can't find something that feels better (I'm really surprised because it shifts poorly and the seat is totally uncomfortable), I'll just keep putting money into it until it dies!

  2. Otto Schimmel 2024-10-22

I've had my Nissan for 12 years and overall it's been a great car. However, I have experienced some issues with the system shutting off while driving, especially in below freezing temperatures. Despite replacing the alternator and battery annually, the dealership has been unable to identify the root cause of the problem. If this issue could be resolved, I would definitely consider purchasing another Nissan. It's worth noting that the car has been very dependable during the summer months!

  3. Armani Gutmann 2024-08-09

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with my 200sx-se that I bought in June of this year. I got a great deal on it for only 2,550 with 57,000 miles at the time. Since then, I've driven it up to 64,000 miles and it's been a very reliable car overall. The only mechanical issue I've had is with the air system - it only blows A/C and heat on speed 4 and I can't run the A/C without the car shutting off. If anyone has any ideas on how to fix this, I'd love to hear them!

Positive 1995 Nissan 200sx car reviews

  1. Stanton Douglas 2024-11-23

This car is perfect as a first car and is very affordable.

  2. Destin Hand 2024-10-12

You made a great choice buying that car for $1500 from a private party! It's impressive that it has 213K on the odometer and yet has had very few problems. It's even better that you've only had to put less than $400 into it and now it runs perfectly. I'm glad to hear that the car responds well despite being only 1.6 liters at 105hp. It's also great that the car can accommodate big people and has minimal driving noise. The car is nicely made and very fun to drive! It's solid all around and has a nice suspension that provides a smooth ride. The engine is very peppy and the gas mileage is excellent, getting 31-35 every tank driven in a suburban area.

  3. Allan Ritchie 2024-10-05

When I test drove my SE-R for the first time, I knew it had great potential. I wouldn't have bought this car if it wasn't a manual, as the automatic fails to bring out the performance of the mid-sized four-banger, which from the cabin sounds like an American 5.0L V8. Thanks to the rear suspension, this car has excellent emergency handling, even at speeds over 40mph! Since I put in the cold air intake, I've been getting about 30 mpg, but that drops to around 22 mpg if I race it a lot. I will never sell this car! If you're looking for a small, swift, fun-to-drive car, go for a manual 200SX SE-R.

  4. Major DuBuque 2024-08-07

You've got yourself an outstanding daily driver that requires little more than regular maintenance!

  5. Dock Renner 2024-06-17

I bought this car in August 2012 with 96,000km's, and I had it until September 2014 at 123,000km's when it was stolen and totalled. This car was truly one of the best first cars ever! Although it didn't have enough power to kill anyone, I was able to get my first speeding ticket in this beauty. It handled with ease, transported my friends with no problems at all, and could even transport all my camping gear. I wish it had never been stolen, but sadly it's time to move on.
