The Kia Opirus is an executive car/full-size sedan, manufactured by Kia Motors and marketed over a single generation for model years 2003–2012 globally and 2004-2009 in North America. Having debuted internationally at the 2003 Geneva Motor Show, the four-door, five-passenger, front-engine, front-drive sedan was launched to the North American market at the New York International Auto Show and in San Diego, bearing the Amanti nameplate — and prioritizing luxury content and comfort over dynamic performance and agility.
Intended to give Kia upward access to global premium markets, the Opirus represented a departure for the brand in both styling and market positioning. As Kia's first premium vehicle, the Opirus replaced the Mazda 929-derived Enterprise in the South Korean domestic market. The Opirus was also the first Kia vehicle sharing a platform with sister company Hyundai, using a variation of the third generation Hyundai Grandeur/XG Y4 platform. For the Opirus, the platform was lengthened 1.9 inches, overall length increased 4.1 inches and height increased 2.6 inches. As Kia's largest sedan, the Opirus was marketed in a single trim level, sharing components with the Grandeur/XG, and a range of engines including its 3.5 L V6 engine (North America). All models were manufactured in Kia's Hwaseong Plant near Incheon.
A 2007 facelift, introduced at the 2006 Paris Auto Show, included upgraded specifications, a curb weight reduction of 250 pounds, revised suspension and a 3.8 L V6 engine (North America) with a 32-percent increase in power over its predecessor. Styling revisions included a shorter and wider grill, revised hood, headlamps, front and rear bumper fascias, alloy wheels, trunk deck lid, tail lamps, dual exhaust outlets and rear quarter panels. The interior featured a revised instrument panel design.
The name Opirus referred to the ancient city of Ophir, noted for its wealth — and was selected via an online survey from the choices of Opirus, Regent and Conzern. In 2004, the New York Times described the name Amanti as an untranslatable latinate construction, intended to connote luxury.

- Summary: [XXX] This was a persistent problem since the car was new; yet, undiscovered by the dealer after their examination. Continued complaint produced no result. Engineer's analysis: Rear Sway Bar End Linkage is designed to rotate during a (leaning outward) pitched road cornering and the resulting torsional forces on the frame. Both rear shock absorbers interfere with the travel of the Sway Bar end linkage during their designed rotational dynamic range. This interference of rotation destroys the shock absorber by repetitive striking and inhibits full functional rotation of the sway bar and end linkage. A mechanic (Jig-Saw Auto; Carson City, Nevada 06/24/2021) replaced damaged shocks hoping to fix the problem; but, it did not. When another mechanic (Les Schwab North Carson City, NV 06/30/2021) put the KIA car on a lift, and discovered the problem a quote was given for a repair of the new shocks which were now damaged. When, by chance, a licensed engineer (yours truly) examined the area, the design flaw was discovered. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 1 recalls for different components of the 2008 Kia Amanti.

- Summary: Kia Motors Corporation (Kia) is recalling certain model year 2007-2010 Rondo, model year 2007-2011 Sedona, Sorento and Sportage, model year 2010-2011 Soul, model year 2008-2011 Optima, model year 2010 Forte, model year 2007-2009 Amanti, and model year 2009 Borrego vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Kia recalled 623,658 model year 2007-2010 Rondo and Sportage, model year 2007-2011 Sorento, model year 2007 Sedona, model year 2010-2011 Soul, and model year 2011 Optima vehicles. In September 2013, Kia informed the agency that it was adding an additional 356,719 vehicles to this campaign. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 980,377. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake-transmission shift interlock feature preventing the shifter from being moved out of the PARK position and cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) malfunction light to illuminate.
- Consequence: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of PARK without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Kia will send an interim notification to owners in May 2013. When parts are available, owners will receive a second notification and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch, free of charge. Owners may contact Kia at 1-800-333-4542. Kia's recall campaign number is SC098.

You'll be pleased to know that this car gets an impressive 27 mpg on the highway. The handling is great and the seating is comfortable. The display panel is user-friendly and easy to navigate. You'll love how it handles at high speeds, even up to 120mph. The radio controls on the steering wheel are a nice touch, and the sound system is top-notch. The rear seating area is roomy and the trunk is quite spacious. Plus, the hidden antenna is a nice touch.

UPDATE: I wrote the previous post on 3/25/2008. Since then, I have not regretted this purchase for one moment. In fact, I've become an even bigger fan of the Amanti. I am extremely pleased with it and have upgraded my initial impressions because I've had the chance to drive it. The response and cornering are great, and it has a wonderful highway feel that blows my Lincoln away. I would highly recommend this vehicle to anyone. At least, don't buy anything until you've looked at the Amanti.

I'm so glad to hear that you purchased a pewter beige Amanti with leather package (tan interior), ESC/safety package, 17 in. wheels and sunroof. After reading an article online about the Amanti's redesign for 2007, it's great to hear that you had a chance to test drive one and that it was a revelation. I know that you seriously shopped the Amanti vs. the Azera and a couple of other nice sedans, and I'm thrilled to hear that the Amanti won. This car truly is an amazing value. I can only imagine how delighted you must be with the quick power and smoothness of the ride. It's such a shame that Kia isn't doing any advertising for this car, as it seems to be the biggest hidden secret on the U.S. market for 2007.

I can't believe I bought a KIA! I'll be taking delivery the day after Mardi Gras, if all the paperwork goes through. By accident, I looked at one and did a lot of research online and talked with a lot of people. Everyone that owned a Kia was happy. My kids are a bit embarrassed for me, one has an SL500, SL55, S55, and GL450, while the other has a Lexus 460 and Yukon XL, among others. They're just too yuppie. I really enjoy driving this car on a trip, but it can be a bit harsh and lumpy in the city. Unfortunately, there are rattles throughout the dash, but I just turn up the stereo to drown them out. On the bright side, the highway mileage is excellent. However, the brakes could use some improvement and the transmission tends to lurch when cold.

The car is okay, but I don't think I would spend $30K to buy another one. I have the loaded version with leather and all the bells and whistles. When I first purchased it, I was driving 50K miles a year and wanted a car that felt safe on the highway. However, now that I only drive 12K - 15K, I don't enjoy driving it as much. I am planning to look for a smaller car with all the bells and whistles that gets better than 20 mpg.
