2019 Bmw X3 problems

bmw logo

The BMW X3 is an SUV manufactured by BMW since 2003, based on the BMW 5 Series platform. Now in its third generation, BMW markets the car as a Sports Activity Vehicle, the company's proprietary descriptor for its X-line luxury vehicles.

The first-generation X3 was designed by BMW in conjunction with Magna Steyr of Graz, Austria—who also manufactured all X3s under contract to BMW. BMW manufactured the second-generation X3 at their Spartanburg plant in South Carolina, United States. Starting with the third generation, BMW South Africa's Rosslyn plant began production of the X3, alongside the Spartanburg plant, after the facility underwent a major upgrade to prepare for the X3 production, replacing the long-running 3 Series production in the plant. About 76,000 units will be manufactured there annually.

The car was the first mid-size, premium SUV on the market. In 2008, BMW started competing with the Mercedes-Benz GLK-Class (renamed GLC-Class since 2016), and numerous other SUVs in this segment. The X3 is smaller than the X5 and X6, and bigger than the X1 and the X2.

An all-electric variant is sold as the BMW iX3.

Common 2019 Bmw X3 problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the 2019 BMW X3, common problems with this vehicle include:

  1. Sudden Acceleration: Owners have reported sudden acceleration issues within the first 2,500 miles, often caused by a damaged throttle position sensor. This problem can lead to unexpected acceleration, but it is usually covered under warranty and can be resolved by replacing the throttle position sensor.
  2. A/C System Malfunction: Some owners have experienced problems with the A/C system not working within the first 10,000 miles. This issue is commonly due to a clogged cabin air filter, which reduces air flow. Replacing the air filter is a typical fix, but if the problem persists, it might involve replacing the blower motor, which can be costly.
  3. Rear Hatch Issues: Reports of the rear hatch opening on its own while parked have been noted. This problem is often caused by accidental activation of the button on the key fob, leading to the hatch opening unexpectedly. While this is usually the case, there have been instances of issues with the hatch motor, which may require reprogramming and can incur additional costs.
  4. Recalls: The 2019 BMW X3 has had eight recalls, including issues with the rear brake caliper pistons, lane keep software, airbags, rearview camera, and the occupant classification system. BMW covers all recall-related repairs at no cost to the owner.
  5. Other Reported Problems: Additional complaints include issues with the active grill shutters, cracked oil filters, and coolant line leaks. These problems have required replacements and repairs, some of which were covered under warranty while others incurred out-of-pocket expenses.

These problems highlight some of the common issues faced by owners of the 2019 BMW X3, emphasizing the importance of regular maintenance and prompt attention to any emerging issues to ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-13
  • VIN: 5UXTR9C58KL
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
  • Summary: The X3 suddenly slowed down to stoppage on an interstate highway, and the car "shifted" to Neutral by itself. I had to shift back to "Drive" and then drive away. It happened twice in September to October 2023, with my family and other kids in the car. Luckily there was traffic, driving speed was relatively low. Contacted two BMW dealerships and the only thing they could do was change the battery. They said maybe the battery wasn't functioning fully. However, BMW shouldn't stop my car on a highway just because the battery may be relatively low. No warning about battery was ever observed. Four pictures attached: Error Message 1 - Increased Steering Effort on 10.13.23 Error Message 2 - Transmission (suddenly "auto-shifted" to Neutral) Error Message 3 - Four-wheel-drive system Error Message 4 - Front monitor suddenly turned on?

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-22
  • VIN: 5UXTS3C5XK0
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: On the 2019 BMW X3, we’ve experienced the tailgate opening while the vehicle is in traffic, and the transmission is in ‘D’ drive. The safety hazard I’m suggesting be investigated is that the buttons on the remote key fob to the vehicle, including lock, unlock, tailgate, and panic, ALL work even if the vehicle is turned on and driving. This poses a serious safety risk to not only occupants of the vehicle, objects or animals that may be in the trunk, but also to other motorists on the road. We’ve personally had this happen three times, all in cases where we were in live traffic on an active roadway. One case in particular our dog was in the trunk and we had to pull over in the middle of traffic while the dog thankfully stayed seated in the trunk area. I believe this happens because it’s very common for the key fob to be in a pocket or purse while operating the vehicle, where it’s very possible for the buttons to be pressed inadvertently. In my opinion, the key fob should not be functional while the car’s ignition is on. No other car I’ve ever owned has had a key fob whose buttons still work while the ignition is on. Happy give further comment if need be. Thanks

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-05
  • VIN: 5UXTR9C54KL
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: My car, a 2019 X3, displayed a malfunction notification "Driver Restraint System Malfunction" along with the airbag indicator glowing in red in my dashboard all of a sudden when I turned-on my parked car. The malfunction notification has remained ever since, whenever the car is turned-on or driven. My local BMW dealer inspected & diagnosed the issue as a harness failure, requiring a replacement of the air bag harnesses of both knee airbags, and potentially the ACSM module in the center console as well. As per this diagnosis, the failure was caused due to a short-circuit. If this issue was left unattended, it would have prevented the deployment of airbags in the event of a crash, resulting in the death of the driver or severe injuries. A manufacturing fault or other quality issues are clearly to blame for such short-circuits. I request NHTSA to investigate the issue and pursue a recall notice for such faulty driver restraint (harness in this case) control modules.

Negative 2019 Bmw X3 car reviews

I recently purchased a new car, but unfortunately, I have been experiencing some issues with it. The electronics seem to be failing and it has spent more time in the shop than any other vehicle I have owned. Yesterday, while driving through construction traffic, the car kept dying and putting itself into park, which was quite frustrating. When I returned to the car with $550 worth of groceries in 98 degree heat, I found that the X3 wouldn't open and the car alarm was going off. After finally managing to open the car manually with the key, I discovered that the car was completely dead. I had to wait for an hour before I could connect to BMW road side assistance and another hour before it was towed to the dealership. Unfortunately, this is not the first time I have had electronic issues with this car, as it was just in the shop 18 days ago. I am quite disappointed with the reliability of this automaker and have decided to move on from them.

In 2019, we purchased the x3 and unfortunately experienced some issues with the brake router just two months later. Thankfully, the dealer was able to replace the front dishes for us. However, this summer in 2022, we noticed a humming noise and vibration coming from the brakes. After taking it to the dealer, we were informed that all four brake dishes and pads needed to be replaced due to rust buildup caused by infrequent use. Unfortunately, the brake system was not covered under warranty and we were required to pay around $2,400 for German parts and local labor. While we still have some suspicions about the dealer's honesty, we are not professionals and cannot prove anything. Our advice would be to avoid purchasing a BMW unless you have the financial means to do so.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with the BMW X3. I've owned 5 of them over the years and have always loved the car. However, I've noticed some issues with the 2019 model that have me considering other options. While the car handles well and is great on gas, I've had a few problems. Firstly, the lever to release the seat extension hits the back of my calf and is constantly extending out. Secondly, the bottom edge of the doors are not smooth and I've gotten a scar from getting out of the car. Thirdly, the navigation doesn't switch back to the map after a call, which can be dangerous. Fourthly, the defrost is so powerful that it completely fogs up the front window. Fifthly, the low fuel indicator light doesn't go on until you only have 40 miles left, which can be dangerous on a long trip. Lastly, the key fob is extremely sensitive and I've had issues with the back hatch opening. Despite these issues, I still love the BMW X3 and hope that these problems can be addressed in future models. Thanks for listening!I am concerned about the functionality of my car's key fob. Sometimes when I am opening the front door, the back hatch opens instead. This is particularly worrying for me as I have a large breed dog that I care for deeply, and I am always afraid that he will get out and get hit by a car. I am never relaxed without a rest area because I’m always afraid of the way I handled the key fob. On several occasions at a rest stop, when I needed to leave the dog in the car for a few minutes only, I would leave the car running with the doors locked and the A/C on. However, on a couple of occasions, I came back to the car to find the motor had turned off, and there was no A/C. This causes a lot of tension for me when I stop at a rest stop. I have owned several X3's in the past, and I have never experienced any of the above issues. This has been quite disconcerting, and I am unsure if I will purchase another X3 after this experience.

I leased a brand new BMW x3 and unfortunately, I have had some issues with the software. The car has been performing electronic functions randomly and it has been quite frustrating. After spending 10 days in the shop, the advisor asked me if I had any emojis in my contacts, which I found quite amusing. They had to reboot everything several times before I finally got the car back. Unfortunately, at 14K, the radiator flaps failed, which was disappointing. Although the car drives well, I find the herky-jerky shut down and start up at stop lights quite annoying. Additionally, there are many buttons and dials to navigate, which can be overwhelming. The ventilation also needs constant adjustment and the auto function does not work properly. Overall, I have had a negative experience with this car and I am currently trying to get BMW to take it back. Thank you for your understanding.

I have never encountered a car with coolant leaks before reaching 45K miles. Unfortunately, the radiator hoses in this particular car were of low quality and not covered by BMW warranty. As a result, I had to pay $1K for parts and labor just to replace a rubber hose.

Positive 2019 Bmw X3 car reviews

  1. Xander Schulist 2025-01-03

The car has excellent power and response, with great MPGs of 25-27 city/hwy combined in mixed driving. The leather seats are comfortable and there is great outward visibility. The handling is near as good as a sports sedan, and there is a lot of satisfying technology, including Apple Car Play and a good infotainment system with a large, bright, high-definition screen. It would have received 5 stars if it were lower in cost, but it was worth the extra money after incentives. Compared to the RDX and XC60, it handles and drives with much more driver engagement for spirited driving. If you can pick up a used one for less, make sure it is not more expensive than leasing a new one, as its 57% residuals really make it a great value.

Congratulations on your recent purchase of a used 2019 X3 2.0 with under 10k miles! It's great to hear that you've already driven it an additional 3k miles, including a 1200 mile trip. The Mineral White paint looks stunning and appears to be of high quality. The optional 21

I'm so glad I chose this well-designed small SUV over the new X5. It has just enough room for my needs and I've already been able to fit in some pretty long items like wood, a bathroom vanity, and a countertop. The performance is impressive and it's even faster than my previous M235i convertible, which was no slouch. The interior is fantastic, especially if you opt for the digital dash and executive package. I highly recommend it!

  4. Nathen Gleichner 2024-08-19

Fun to drive, fits four to five people and their stuff, all wheel drive, safe, sporty, classy - the BMW X3 hits all the marks! I'm so glad I bought it again in the 2020 model.

  5. Colby Brakus 2024-08-10

This vehicle is quite expensive, but it stands out in its class. The quality of finish, materials, thoughtfulness of design, sheer performance, and great handling all complement the stylish exterior. When test driving a variety of SUVs and wagons, we decided to give BMW a try in the hopes of receiving better treatment than we did a decade ago. We drove to the Topeka Kansas dealership, and after a brief email exchange, they had pre-staged three cars for us: an X3 M40i, an X3 xDrive 4 cylinder, and a VW Golf R. We started with the 40i, and only test drove the others out of a sense of duty! The manager suggested we take a break for lunch, take any one of the cars with us, and come back when we were ready. WOW -- they obviously believe their car sells itself, and they are right. We bought the car we test drove - equipped almost like we had special ordered it. The acceleration is unbelievable, and the handling is very good for a 2 ton SUV. The interior appointment and finish are wonderful, with more knobs and buttons than we know what to do with. In fact, BMW offers an Encore - bring your new BMW back to the dealership and they assign a BMW associate to go over all of the features of the car, at a time of your convenience. Our encore took nearly 3 hours, and included a tour of the service area, the parts desk, and answering all of our questions about the X3. We highly recommend this car and the Topeka BMW-VW dealership for their fabulous, albeit expensive, vehicle and great customer service.
