The Hyundai Kona (Korean: 현대 코나) is a subcompact crossover SUV produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai. The first-generation Kona debuted in June 2017 and the production version was revealed later that year. It is positioned between the Venue or Bayon and the Tucson in Hyundai crossover SUV line-up. The battery electric version called the Kona Electric (or Kona EV) was first launched in South Korea during the first half of 2018 and rolled out gradually worldwide afterwards.

Naming

The Kona is named after the western district of the island of Hawaiʻi. The company stated the name "reflects the lifestyle of modern customers", in line with its "progressive design" that it adopts. The Kona naming also continues Hyundai's tradition of naming crossover SUV models after famous travel destinations, including the Creta, Santa Fe, Tucson and Veracruz.

The vehicle is marketed in Portugal as the Hyundai Kauai, as Kona is too similar to cona, a slang word for the female genitalia in European Portuguese. It's also sold in Iceland where the word kona means woman in Icelandic. Like Kona, Kauai is a place in Hawaii. It is also Hawaiian for lady.

In China, the vehicle was sold as the Hyundai Encino.

Your recall ID 24V528 sent July 22, I phoned the dealer, Mike Murphy in Peoria, Illinois and they could not find this recall. I have an appointment with them on Oct 24 to bring in my car for an oil change and to fix a recall on the trunk lock (I was not given any info on this recall until I contacted the dealership). Since I put in my VIN # above, It did not turn up anything either. What's going on and why are you sending Recalls that have nothing to do with my vehicle (?)

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-02
  • VIN: KM8K6CAB7PU
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: Forward Safety Mode is the default setting on every time you start the vehicle and this mode when entering from side streets or any strip center or lane into on coming traffic lanes the vehicle senses you crossing the road lines and kills the Accelerator ! When trying to enter onto the main road even if you allow enough time to accelerate to pull out onto main road : The vehicle thinks you are off raod or in some sort of danger and kills the accelerator and if you think fast enough after the 2-3 second delay you can floor the accelerator and the vehicle will then start picking up after a dangerous delay that can get someone t-boned and very serious accident if not possible death. Its a very dangerous function. Note: I manually go in and turn this forward safety to warning only or off. I use the warning but the real problem is you have to do this upon every start after turning the engine off. I think this needs to be seriously looked into.If you dont turn to warning setting and go to say pull out of a store onto the highway and dont leave enough time to avoid on coming traffic and or you freeze due to no accelleration you are in deep trouble and maybe an accident !! Or Death..

  • VIN: KM8K33A32PU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The vehicle was purchased brand new. After the first recommended oil change interval, the car has leaking oil daily. A complaint of the leak made to the dealer at 2nd oil change. FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-30
  • VIN: KM8K6CAB5PU
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: Had left Costco and while driving away down road to intersection, the 2023 Kona SEL abruptly locked the brakes and briefly skidded, as it displayed Emergency Braking Activated message on display. I had crossed a dotted line to enter a left turn lane at about 20 mph to make a turn which should not have triggered the AEB-there wasnt anything in front of me whatsoever except empty road, the roadway was dry and unobstructed. I maintained control of the car after being surprised by the brakes locking up for a second or two without any warning. I have not experienced this before after driving the Kona for little over a year and a half, with 22, 000 miles. I experienced repeated phantom braking problems with a 2120 Mazda Cx30 I previously owned; the Kona braked harder into a brief skid but shorter in time than the CX30. This was more dangerous!

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-11
  • VIN: KM8K62AB5PU
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: Rodent damage found during 1-year maintenance. This is an increasing problem that is under-reported. Damage was found before any wires were effected, however, the wiring was exposed and would have caused a malfunction had this not been detected by technician. 1. Automakers across the board are using cheaper, soy-based elements to wrap wiring and customers are having to deal with the result of subpar parts. 2. With automakers increasing the time allowed between oil changes, customers are given a false sense of functionality in the vehicles they drive. 3. Automakers that advertise "free maintenance" should not be allowed to limit maintenance to once per year or every 5,000-8,000 miles, as more prudent inspection would prevent customers from unknowingly having their cars devoured by rodents.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-30
  • VIN: KM8K32AB1PU
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: While driving on the highway on an extended trip my cruise control dropped its speed from 71 to 65 without warning. On one occasion it happened while I was in the passing lane with a lot of traffic behind me. It created a very dangerous situation before I could get into the right lane. Another incident was when again I was driving along, no one in front of me, beside me or behind me and the speed dropped once again. Had I been in traffic who knows what would have happened. I have turned the automatic breaking system off because while on a trip I was in the right lane when a car cut me off. The breaks went on and the car went totally out of control! I have filed a complaint with Hyundai and after waiting 8 weeks for a call regarding my case number they refuse to acknowledge that it is a manufacturing issue. I have had the vehicle into the dealer 3 times and they have not been able to replicate it by driving around the area, but have not taken it out on the highway at a higher speed which is when it occurs and when one would use the cruise control. I have only 9,000 miles on the car at this point and no remedy in sight.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-17

The local dealer was contacted. The contact called another local dealer, Hyundai West (10611 W Arthur Ave., West Allis, WI 53227), and was informed that parts might be available in two to three weeks after being taken in for service. The contact stated that the manufacturer had exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-30
  • VIN: KM8K6CAB5PU
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Horn no longer works when pressed at 11,396 miles. Manufacturer will not offer loaner vehicle. Vehicle is not safe to drive without horn. Manufacturer does not seem to care that it's broken and will not expedite the repair process. I will have to drive this vehicle for approximately a month with no horn. My safety is put at risk as I cannot warn other drivers of impending danger and cannot warn other drivers they are about to hit me. The manufacturer has not yet inspected the vehicle. The inspection will take place on August 21st. There were no warning indications before I attempted to use the horn and it didn't work. It's possible that the horn has been broken for a while.

Negative 2023 Hyundai Kona car reviews

  1. Alf Bergnaum 2024-10-24

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I noticed that you mentioned having some trouble with your car. It sounds like you've had a bit of bad luck with the CVT oil pump controller and the engine temperature sensor. Is there anything else going on that I can help you with?

  2. Kody Jaskolski 2024-08-20

Hi there! I recently had the chance to test drive this SUV, and I wanted to share my thoughts. On the plus side, the turbo engine really impressed me with its power and acceleration. Additionally, the exterior design is quite attractive. However, I did notice a few downsides. The interior felt a bit cheap, and the seats weren't very comfortable. Also, the hard plastic trim made it uncomfortable to rest my elbow on the door sill. Finally, I found that the transmission didn't shift very smoothly and sometimes hung in the wrong gear for a few extra seconds. Overall, it's an okay car, but I think there are better options out there. Let me know if you have any questions!

  3. Darren Halvorson 2024-07-09

The door panels may develop light to medium scratches over time, which can be frustrating. We understand that this may not meet your expectations of quality, and we apologize for any inconvenience caused.

Positive 2023 Hyundai Kona car reviews

  1. Brant Terry 2025-01-03

Love everything about it! It's my 2nd Kona. The 195 HP is zippy at 3200 pounds. The tech package is insane. Blue link is really, really cool.

  2. Lucas Shanahan 2024-11-21

The car is reliable, but its size may not be suitable for those with grandkids. Additionally, there have been some issues with the sensitivity of the sensors for accident detection and other features. However, I am confident that I will be able to trade it in for a larger vehicle within a year.

  3. Ansley Gusikowski 2024-08-14

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with the Kona, which is actually my third Hyundai! I've been leasing them for three years and it's been a great deal because I always get free service. My previous two were Tucsons and they were both great, but this time I decided to go for a smaller vehicle and I'm really happy with my choice. As a 69-year-old, I was concerned about getting in and out of the car with ease, but the Kona does this really well. The front seats are comfortable, although the back may get a bit tight. The sporty and fun design of the car does impact rear storage, but that's to be expected with a small vehicle. I mostly do town and city driving and I'm getting around 26 mpg, which is a great improvement over the larger Tucson. But what I really love about this car is that it's fun to drive! I've had it for 10 months and I'm still having a blast. The engine is zippy and not at all sluggish, especially in Sport mode. The only downside is that there's no option for a power lift gate, but overall, I think this is a terrific vehicle.

  4. Faustino Nicolas 2024-07-25

The vehicle handles great with tight steering. It's the perfect size - not too big, not too small. I was completely satisfied with the look, design, and price.

  5. Jamil Schoen 2024-05-22

If you're happy, then I'm happy.
