1987 Isuzu Trooper problems
The Isuzu Trooper is a full-size SUV that was produced by the Japanese automaker Isuzu between September 1981 and September 2002. In the domestic Japanese market it was sold as the Isuzu Bighorn, the car was exported internationally mainly as a Trooper but it also received several other nameplates including Acura SLX, Chevrolet Trooper, Subaru Bighorn, SsangYong Korando Family, Honda Horizon, Opel Monterey, Vauxhall Monterey, Holden Jackaroo, and Holden Monterey.
In total, there were two generations of this vehicle: the first, produced between 1981 and 1991; and the second (UBS) produced between 1991 and 2002, with a substantial refresh in 1998.
The Trooper began as a rather basic and somewhat underpowered on- and off-road vehicle, offered only with four-cylinder motor, four-speed manual transmission, and part-time four-wheel drive. The first generation evolved to add both amenities and luxuries, including optional air-conditioning, power windows, and a more powerful V6 engine. The second generation was even more refined and available in two-wheel drive as well as four-wheel drive.

Common 1987 Isuzu Trooper problems
The Isuzu Trooper, produced between 1987 and 2003, has been known for several common problems that affect its performance and reliability. Here are some of the most frequently reported issues based on complaints from owners:
- Engine Oil Light Illuminated: If the engine oil warning light is lit even after refilling the oil, it may indicate a leak in the differential, particularly around the 55,000-mile mark. This would require replacement of the differential, which can be costly at a mechanic but can be done at home with a replacement part from BreakerYard.
- Excessive Fuel Use and Starting Problems: These symptoms can indicate a failing fuel pump. Replacing the fuel pump is a complex task, but online guides are available to assist with the process.
- Rough Idling: Rough idling on the Trooper is often due to a damaged intake manifold gasket. Replacing the gasket is a relatively straightforward task, and parts are readily available.
- Ticking From Valve Train: A ticking sound from the engine valve train area is commonly caused by varnish build-up in the hydraulic lash adjusters. Using a higher quality oil can help resolve this issue.
- Oil Leak: Isuzu has acknowledged an oil leak issue, which is often caused by a faulty front crankshaft oil seal. A revised design is available from BreakerYard to address this problem.
- Rattling From Front of the Car: A rattling sound coming from the front of the car is often due to timing chain tensioners wearing out faster than on other vehicles. Replacement tensioners are available from BreakerYard.
- Power Loss: Power loss and a check engine light may indicate a failing catalytic converter, which cannot be repaired and requires replacement.
- 4WD Indicator Staying On: If the 4WD indicator stays on even when in 2WD, it may indicate a faulty vacuum hose, solenoid, or engine valve that needs replacement.
- Differential Leaking: Oil weeping or leaking from between the two rear wheels is often caused by the differential leaking, requiring replacement to resolve the issue.
In addition to these issues, the 1987 Isuzu Trooper has been known to have engine and performance problems, including head gasket leaks and coolant or oil leaks. These issues can be caused by various factors, such as worn-out parts or faulty components, and may require replacement or repair.
