1991 Isuzu Trooper problems
The Isuzu Trooper is a full-size SUV that was produced by the Japanese automaker Isuzu between September 1981 and September 2002. In the domestic Japanese market it was sold as the Isuzu Bighorn, the car was exported internationally mainly as a Trooper but it also received several other nameplates including Acura SLX, Chevrolet Trooper, Subaru Bighorn, SsangYong Korando Family, Honda Horizon, Opel Monterey, Vauxhall Monterey, Holden Jackaroo, and Holden Monterey.
In total, there were two generations of this vehicle: the first, produced between 1981 and 1991; and the second (UBS) produced between 1991 and 2002, with a substantial refresh in 1998.
The Trooper began as a rather basic and somewhat underpowered on- and off-road vehicle, offered only with four-cylinder motor, four-speed manual transmission, and part-time four-wheel drive. The first generation evolved to add both amenities and luxuries, including optional air-conditioning, power windows, and a more powerful V6 engine. The second generation was even more refined and available in two-wheel drive as well as four-wheel drive.

Common 1991 Isuzu Trooper problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the 1991 Isuzu Trooper, several common problems have been identified:
- Transmission Oil Leakage: Another recall highlighted the issue of putting in more transmission oil than specified, which can lead to oil bleeding through an air groove onto the exhaust manifold if the oil temperature rises. The remedy involves replacing the oil level gauge and advising owners to use only the specified amount of automatic transmission fluid.
- Cooling System Hose Contact: An issue with improperly installed hoses on the oil cooler that could come in contact with the exhaust manifold and melt was reported. The remedy involves properly installing a cooler hose clip to prevent contact with the exhaust manifold.
- Engine and Engine Cooling: Complaints included problems related to engine and engine cooling systems, such as issues with the structure, visibility, defroster, and HVAC system.
- Valve Train Noise: Owners reported valve train noise due to varnish buildup as a common issue with the Isuzu Trooper.
- Excessive Engine Oil Consumption: Another common problem was excessive engine oil consumption, which could indicate underlying issues with the engine.
- Starting Issues: Some owners experienced starting issues where the car would start fine in the morning but have difficulty starting up again after being shut off, potentially indicating problems with the fuel pump, crank position sensor, or ignition module.
- Engine Overheating: Complaints included engine overheating, with reports of the radiator getting very hot even after the engine has been shut off. This could be a result of various issues like a faulty cooling system, radiator, or thermostat.
These problems highlight a range of safety and performance issues that owners of the 1991 Isuzu Trooper have encountered. Addressing these concerns promptly and with the appropriate repairs or maintenance can help ensure the safety and longevity of the vehicle.

Why did Isuzu stop making the Trooper?
SUV market changes and safety concerns doomed the Trooper
Unfortunately for Isuzu, mid-size classics like the Honda CRV and Toyota Rav-4 essentially cornered that market before they could find footing with their oddly conceived Vehicross and other compact models.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 1998-08-01
- Fire: 1
- VIN: JACCH58RXM7
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,POWER TRAIN
- Summary: THE TRANSMISSION HAS BEEN SHIFTING ROUGH SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED NEW IN 1991. THE FIRST INCIDENT WAS COVERED UNDER WARRANTY AND SOME MINOR REPAIRS/ADJUSTMENTS WERE MADE BY THE DEALER. THE SECOND INCIDENT REQUIRED MORE EXTENSIVE REPAIRS TO THE TRANSMISSION AND I WAS REQUIRED TO PAY A PORTION OF THE REPAIRS SINCE THE WARRANTY HAD EXPIRED BY SOME 2-3K MILES. UPON THE THIRD INCIDENT WITH THE DRIVE TRAIN, I REQUESTED SOMEONE FROM THE MANUFACTURER TO INVESTIGATE. THEY REQUESTED THAT I KEEP A LOG FOR ABOUT TWO WEEKS OF THE CONDITIONS OCCURRING WHILE DRIVING. AFTER THIS PERIOD, THEY FELT THE PROBLEM WAS IN THE UNIVERSAL JOINTS. THESE WERE REPLACED AND THE PROBLEM STILL EXISTS. OTHER COMPLAINTS IN THE DRIVE TRAIN INVOLVE THE INABILITY OF THE CRUISE CONTROL TO MAINTAIN SPEED ON SLIGHT INCLINES AND WOULD SUFFER A GREAT REDUCTION IN SPEED ON A MODERATE TO STEEP INCLINE. WITH REGARDS TO THE FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM, A FUEL INJECTOR PLUG EXPLODED WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS AND ERUPTED IN A FIRE THAT SELF-EXTINGUSHED. THE DEALER WAS INFORMED THE REPLACEMENT PART WAS NO LONGER AVAILABLE EVEN THOUGH THE VEHICLE WAS ONLY 7 YEARS OLD AT THE TIME. I PROCEEDED TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO WAS ABLE TO USE A GM PART (I FOUND OUT THAT THE DRIVE TRAIN AND ENGINE ARE ACTUALLY MADE IN WHOLE OR IN PART BY GM EVEN THOUGH MY VEHICLE IS AN ISUZU). THERE WAS A SECOND INCIDENT IDETICAL TO THE FIRST AND THE REPAIRS WERE AGAIN MADE. I HAD THE DEALER CONDUCT AN INVESTIGATION TO DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF THIS FAILURE. THEY WER ONLY ABLE TO DETERMINE THAT THE THERMOSTAT WAS NOT OPERATING AT FULL CAPACITY, BUT COULD NOT SAY THIS WAS THE CAUSE OF THE INJECTOR FAILURES.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 1999-06-12
- Fire: 1
- VIN: JACCH58R4M8
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: I HAVE HAD A HISTORY (DOCUMENTED) OF ELECTRICAL/TRANSMISSION PROBLEMS WITH MY 1991 ISUZU TROOPER. ON 11/95, A FAULTY COMPUTER CONTROL PANEL CAUSED MY TRANSMISSION TO FAIL. I HAD A WEEK LEFT ON MY POWERTRAIN WARRANTY. TOOK THE VEHICLE TO ISUZU SANTA MONICA. THEY REPLACED THE COMPUTER PANEL UNDER WARRANTY ON 11/95. 15 MONTHS LATER, MY TRANSMISSION WAS FAILING AGAIN. SAME SYMPTOMS. THIS TIME, I SPENT $2,000 TO HAVE IT REPAIRED. ISUZU REFUSED TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY. ON 6/12/99, WITHOUT WARNING, THE ENGINE STARTED SMOKING AND WITHIN SECONDS THE ENTIRE ENGINE WAS ON FIRE. THE FIRE DEPT. CAME AND PUT OUT THE FIRE. NOW THE TRUCK IS COMPLETELY TOTALED. I AM IN THE MIDST OF HAVING INSURANCE INSPECTORS DETERMINE THE CAUSE OF FIRE. I HAVE ALL OF MY SERVICE RECORDS FOR THE VEHICLE. IT WAS KEPT IN EXCELLENT CONDITION.

THE PASSENGER SIDE FRONT TIRE MELTED AND EXPLODED, THEN THERE WAS A SECOND EXPLOSION. ALL THE PARTS OF THE ENGINE, BATTERY ETC. WERE IN FLAMES. TWO FIRE TRUCKS AND POLICE CARS WERE DIPATCHED. IT WAS A VERY BIG BLAZE. THE TRUCK HAS BEEN DECLARED A TOTAL LOSS. OUR INSURANCE COMPNAY CANNOT DETERMINE WHAT CAUSED THE FIRE SINCE THE DAMAGE IS SO EXTENSIVE. PLEASE HELP. I bought this car used from the original owner in 2005 when it had 80K miles on it. Since then, I have put 75K miles on it and have only had to do regular oil changes and a few engine upgrades. I highly recommend the K&N airflow kit and E3 plugs for anyone looking to upgrade their car. With the 2.6 manual, I was getting 18 mpg, but now I'm getting a constant 22 mpg. The car is roomy, efficient, and tows my bike with no problem. The A/C works great, and everything else is in good condition. If anyone has any knowledge on how to disconnect the smog system without causing any damage, I would appreciate it. Thank you!

I bought a '91 Trooper two years ago because my spouse had a '90 model for about five years and we absolutely loved it. Our first one lasted for 280,000 miles and it was an amazing vehicle. Some of my family members also own Troopers. Our '91 model has been fantastic since we bought it with 89,000 miles on it. Now, with over 123,000 miles, it still runs like a top. We are now purchasing an '01 limited, but we will definitely be keeping our other Trooper. The Trooper is one of the best SUVs out there - it's a shame they stopped making them!

Well, I must say that I have owned two Isuzu's in my life. The first one was a 1990 Trooper that had 199,000 miles on it, and the second one was a 1999 Rodeo with 102,000 miles. In my opinion, these are great SUVs. Even though I am only 18 years old, I have grown up around cars ranging from Fiats to Mercedes (my first car was a 300SDL). I don't want to give the impression that an Isuzu can equal a Mercedes in anything except price, but for the money spent, there are no better automobiles available.

If you like to off-road, this is the next best thing to a Jeep. I inherited a 1991 Trooper a couple of years ago and it has been my weekend driver. I can easily switch to four-wheel drive and my Trooper comes with factory skid plates, allowing me to go places that Jeeps can't. I truly love this SUV, it's a real off-road gem!
-
Hi there! I noticed that your Trooper is a 1989 model. It's great to hear that it performs well off-road and can keep up with bigger vehicles. Although it has a 2.8 V6 engine with a 5-speed, it may lack power when it comes to highway driving and towing due to its smaller size. Additionally, the AC flow from the dash may be low due to a poor design. However, it's impressive that it gets 16-20 miles per gallon, which is great for its size. In all-around driving, you're averaging 17-17.5 miles per gallon, which is fantastic! Keep up the good work!

This car is truly amazing! We purchased it from the original owner with 220,000 miles for only $1000, and it has been the best investment we've made in a long time. Even as it approaches 300k, we have spent next to nothing on maintenance. While some have mentioned that it is underpowered and the AC is not very strong, we have found it to be incredibly reliable. We do have the automatic and it's starting to show signs of wear, but it has never let us down, even when we've taken it off-road. We truly believe that Isuzu should consider building another excellent SUV like this one!

The Trooper is a highly underrated and overlooked midsized SUV. We have a 90 Trooper-1st generation, which we purchased from my brother's 96 Trooper. Its design makes it a true utility vehicle, and the interior height is great for hauling - compare the room with an Explorer and you will see the difference! The 4WD is great in the snow, and while the 4 cyl. 5-speed is not fast, it is certainly adequate. As for handling, well, it's a truck. The high profile boxy design can make windy days a bit scary, but this has been improved in recent years. The interior is basic, but comfortable, and while interior noise can be loud, the ride is what you would expect from a truck. The vehicle has been incredibly reliable. Overall, we absolutely love its usefulness and will definitely replace it with a newer version.

I'm glad to hear that you've had this car for a while now! It's impressive that it has already reached 216,000 miles and is only now in need of its first clutch replacement.

Congratulations on selling your 1990 Trooper with 171,000 miles on it! I understand that it was a tough decision to make, but I'm glad you were able to do it for monetary reasons. It sounds like you had a great experience with your Trooper, and I'm sure you'll find another one just as good someday. The Trooper is truly unstoppable in the snow and it's great to hear that you never had any problems with it. Although the gas mileage wasn't great, it's wonderful that you didn't have to make any payments on it. The driving position and comfortable seats made it an all-around fun car to own and drive. It's clear that you have a lot of love for the Trooper, and I'm sure many others feel the same way. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

I bought this 1991 Trooper more than a year ago. After getting new tires, a tune-up, brakes, and more, I had a pretty nifty SUV. While the performance isn't perfect, the XS model has plenty of bells and whistles and it's a real truck.
