The Isuzu Trooper is a full-size SUV that was produced by the Japanese automaker Isuzu between September 1981 and September 2002. In the domestic Japanese market it was sold as the Isuzu Bighorn, the car was exported internationally mainly as a Trooper but it also received several other nameplates including Acura SLX, Chevrolet Trooper, Subaru Bighorn, SsangYong Korando Family, Honda Horizon, Opel Monterey, Vauxhall Monterey, Holden Jackaroo, and Holden Monterey.

In total, there were two generations of this vehicle: the first, produced between 1981 and 1991; and the second (UBS) produced between 1991 and 2002, with a substantial refresh in 1998.

The Trooper began as a rather basic and somewhat underpowered on- and off-road vehicle, offered only with four-cylinder motor, four-speed manual transmission, and part-time four-wheel drive. The first generation evolved to add both amenities and luxuries, including optional air-conditioning, power windows, and a more powerful V6 engine. The second generation was even more refined and available in two-wheel drive as well as four-wheel drive.

What engine is in a 1990 Isuzu Trooper?

The 2.8-liter, 60 degree V6 engine features a cast iron block and cylinder heads, durable five main bearing crankshaft, throttle body fuel injection and transistorized ignition system. WHEN I ARRIVED HOME AND BEGAN TO PERFORM REPAIRS I REMOVED THE LEFT REAR(DRIVERS SIDE) TIRE AND FOUND THAT THE COMPLETE BRAKE PAD HAD BEEN SHELLED OUT OF THE CALIPER AND THAT ALL THAT WAS STOPPING THE VEHICLE WAS THE CALIPER PISTON. I WOULDN'T REALLY BE TOO CONCERNED, ALTHOUGH I AM NOT SURE HOW IT WAS ABLE TO SHELL THE PAD COMPLETELY OUT(NOT JUST THE LINING BUT THE WHOLE PAD,BACKING AND ALL), BUT I HAVE A FRIEND WHO HAS A 94 TROOPER AND HE HAS EXPERIENCED THE SAME TROUBLE, JUST CURIOUS IF THIS DEFECT WITHIN THE TROOPER OF JUST AM ISOLATED COINCIDENCE. ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 1999-11-18
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: JACDH58V0N7
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: THE VEHICLE'S TAIL PIPE SEPARATED FROM THE MUFFLER'S DISCHARGE FLANGE WHICH IS TURNED 90 DEGREES UP, CAUSING THE HOT EHHAUST GASES TO HIT THE FLOOR DECK ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE VEHICLE, JUST BEHIND THE BACK SEAT. THIS RESULTED IN FLAMES INSIDE THE VEHICLE, WHICH WERE PUT OUT BEFORE ANY OTHER DAMAGE COULD OCCUR. LOOKING AT NEWER TROOPER'S ISUZU CONTINUES TO USE THE SAME MUFFLER WITH NO HEAT SHIELD ABOVE THE FLANGE. IN A SIX MILE DRIVE THE THE DEALER WITH THE PIPE BROKEN ENOUGH, HEAT WAS GENERATED TO STARE THE MATTING SMOKING AGAIN. IN MY MIND THIS IS A SERIOUS DEFECT IN DESIGN THAT COULD CREATES A MAJOR FIRE HAZARD GIVEN THE FAILURE RATE OF EXHAUST COMPONENTS OVER TIME. *AK

Negative 1992 Isuzu Trooper car reviews

  1. Emmanuel Parker 2024-09-02

The truck rides well, but it bottoms out with a load or boat on the back. Unfortunately, the driver's seat lacks lower back support, and the fuel economy is poor. However, the exterior body has held up great, and the interior room is good. Although it has had some trouble with interior electrical and spark plug wires, as well as two oxygen sensors, it is still a reliable truck. The only downside is that it has a low resale value, and the parts are very expensive compared to other comparable models. Overall, it is a good and trusty truck!

  2. Waylon Ernser 2024-02-13

Hi there! I'm so excited to share my experience with my second Trooper! I bought it with 101,000 miles on it and it's been such a reliable vehicle. I've put over 20,000 miles on it in the past 8 months and it's still going strong! Of course, like any vehicle, it's had a few issues - the transmission needed new gaskets and the engine gaskets will need to be replaced at some point, but this is a known problem with Isuzus. I also had the shocks replaced because of body roll from old, worn-out shocks. Despite these minor issues, the body and interior are very solid - nothing rattles! Plus, I'm actually getting 19 mpg on the highway, which is great for an SUV. If you're considering a used SUV, I highly recommend the Trooper!

Positive 1992 Isuzu Trooper car reviews

  1. Robbie Gutmann 2024-09-26

This thing is amazing! Whether you're off-road or on-road, it has incredible power and acceleration. It outperforms any stock Jeep or SUV off-road and is so much fun to drive. The only issue I've ever had was the O2 Sensor needing replacement, but it was well worth the purchase.

  2. Jonas Corkery 2024-09-01

Great to hear that you enjoyed your vehicle for 9 years and even upgraded to a 2001 model! It sounds like it was perfect for winter driving and summer camping, and comfortable for those long 3-7 hour drives. Thanks for sharing your positive experience!

  3. Vance Schultz 2024-08-14

My vehicle became part of the family lifestyle - sports. Lots of sports gear and sports players - not all mine. Three of my son's teammates' parents bought the same car.

  4. Napoleon Dooley 2024-03-03

Our 1992 Trooper has been a reliable companion. Despite lots of backroad work and offroad trail access, this vehicle has never let us down. While the 5-speed versions of the 1992-series through the current models may suffer from unimaginative packaging (thanks to GM!), they are still enjoyable to drive, remarkably trouble-free, and boast better fit and finish than most SUVs.

  5. Rolando Schneider 2024-02-26

I'm so happy with my Trooper! It has been such a reliable and tough SUV, with a bulletproof drivetrain and underpinnings. I've put it through its paces on tough Rocky Mountain trails at over 10,000 ft altitude, as well as on the highway and off-road, and it has never let me down. Even in the snow, it's an excellent vehicle. The only issue I had was with the underpowered heater for the car's size, but that's a minor inconvenience. Overall, I highly recommend the Trooper!
