The Toyota Mirai (Japanese: トヨタ・MIRAI, Hepburn: Toyota Mirai) (from mirai (未来), Japanese for 'future') is a mid-size hydrogen fuel cell vehicle (FCV) manufactured by Toyota, and is the first FCV to be mass-produced and sold commercially. The Mirai was unveiled at the November 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show. As of November 2022, global sales totaled 21,475 units; the top-selling markets were the U.S. with 11,368 units, Japan with 7,435 and the rest of the world with 2,622.

Under the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) cycle, the 2016 model year Mirai has a total range of 502 km (312 mi) on a full tank. The MPG-equivalent combined city/highway fuel economy rating was 66 mpg‑US (3.6 L/100 km; 79 mpg‑imp), making the Mirai the most fuel-efficient hydrogen fuel cell vehicle rated at the time by the EPA, and the one with the longest range. In August 2021, the second-generation Mirai set a world record of traveling 1,360 km (845 mi) with a full tank of 5.65 kg (12.5 lb) of hydrogen.

Sales in Japan began on 15 December 2014 at ¥6.7 million (~US$57,400) at Toyota Store and Toyopet Store locations. The Japanese government plans to support the commercialization of fuel-cell vehicles with a subsidy of ¥2 million (~US$19,600). Retail sales in the U.S. began in August 2015 at a price of US$57,500 before any government incentives. Deliveries to retail customers began in California in October 2015. Toyota scheduled to release the Mirai in the Northeastern United States in the first half of 2016. As of June 2016, the Mirai was available for retail sales in the UK, Denmark, Germany, Belgium, and Norway. Pricing in Germany started at €60,000 (~US$75,140) plus VAT (€78,540).

Common 2017 Toyota Mirai problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the 2017 Toyota Mirai, several common problems have been highlighted:

  • Premature Climate System Failure: Another common problem reported by owners is the premature failure of the climate system in the 2017 Mirai. Users have experienced malfunctions where the heater activates on its own and fails to turn off. This issue is concerning, especially considering the high cost of the vehicle, as owners expect reliable performance from a car in this price range.
  • Fuel Cell System Failure: The Mirai can experience a failure of the fuel cell system under specific driving conditions, such as going down a long hill with cruise control engaged and then accelerating quickly. This issue can lead to the car quitting due to voltage exceeding limits in the fuel cell boost converter. Toyota has addressed this problem with a software update to prevent such failures, emphasizing it as a customer satisfaction campaign rather than a recall.
  • Soy-Based Wiring Attracting Rodents: The 2017 Mirai, like other Toyota models, uses soy-based wiring insulation, which has attracted rodents that chew on the wires. This can lead to significant damage and costly repairs for owners. Lawsuits have been filed against Toyota regarding this issue, highlighting the potential for rodent damage due to the eco-friendly wiring insulation used in the vehicle.

These problems with the 2017 Toyota Mirai can impact the usability, safety, and overall satisfaction of owners. Addressing these issues is crucial to ensure a positive ownership experience and maintain the reliability and performance of the vehicle.

  • VIN: JTDBVRBD8HA
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: The automatic braking system will lock up when there is nothing in front of the car. It will not give a warning like it supposed to. I have gotten whiplash and I’ve hurt my back several times due to this incident. It has also caused major anxiety when driving the car. It’s almost caused an accident several times. The dealership keeps telling me that nothings wrong however the issue keeps happening. Nobody’s fixing it. A specialist has been checking it out and they also were not able to find anything however the issue is still happening. There have been no warning signs or messages when the brakes lock up for no reason.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2018-08-24
  • VIN: JTDBVRBD6HA
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: UNTIL TWO (2) DAYS AGO, I WAS THE HAPPY OWNER OF A 2017 TOYOTA MIRAI (VIN [XXX]). AT THE TIME OF MY INCIDENT, THE CAR HAD APPROXIMATELY 19,700 MILES ON THE ODOMETER. ON FRIDAY 24 AUGUST 2018 AT APPROXIMATELY 1615 (4:15 PM), I WAS DRIVING MY WIFE TO THE CLEANERS. I WAS ON ALMADEN EXPRESSWAY JUST SOUTH OF THE CAMDEN INTERSECTION IN A SOUTHERLY DIRECTION. SUDDENLY AND WITHOUT WARNING, THE CAR LOST POWER. THE CAR MONITOR SCREEN INSTRUCTED ME TO PULL OFF AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AND TO CONTACT MY CAR DEALER. I WAS INFORMED THAT I HAD AN FC FAILURE. AFTER THE CAR WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER, I WAS INFORMED BY THE DEALER THAT A SMALL ROCK HAD COMPLETELY PASSED THROUGH THE RADIATOR. THE TOYOTA MIRAI IS A HYDROGEN FUEL CELL VEHICLE. THERE IS NO INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE. HYDROGEN FUEL FEEDS A FUEL CELL WHICH COMBINES THE HYDROGEN WITH FREE OXYGEN TO MAKE ELECTRICITY. THIS ELECTRICITY THEN POWERS TWO MOTORS AND/OR THE BATTERY. THE FUEL CELL REQUIRES A RADIATOR FOR COOLING. THIS RADIATOR IS THE ACHILLES HEEL OF THE MIRAI. IT IS PLACED LOW, IN FRONT, ON THE PASSENGER?S SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THERE IS NO BUMPER TO PROTECT IT FROM COLLISIONS WITH CURBS. IN MY CASE, THERE IS NO PROTECTION FROM ROCKS AND GRAVEL HITTING THE RADIATOR AND DISABLING THE VEHICLE. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6). *TR

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-06-12
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: TL* THE CONTACT OWNS A 2017 TOYOTA MURAI. WHILE DRIVING AT ANY SPEED, THE DASHBOARD REFLECTED ON THE SIDE VIEW MIRRORS, WHICH MADE IT DIFFICULT TO SEE. THE DEALER (SAN FRANCISCO TOYOTA IN SAN FRANCISCO, CA, 415-559-1981) WAS UNABLE TO DIAGNOSE THE FAILURE AND STATED THAT THE FAILURE WOULD BE REPORTED TO THE MANUFACTURER. THE MANUFACTURER WAS AWARE OF THE FAILURE, BUT DID NOT RETURN THE CALL, AS PROMISED. THE FAILURE WAS NOT REPAIRED. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 1,000. THE VIN WAS NOT PROVIDED.....UPDATED 12/11/17 *BF *TT

SEAT BELTS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-01-16
  • VIN: JTDBVRBD8HA
  • Components: SEAT BELTS
  • Summary: THE CHILD SEAT LATCHES FOR CAR SEATS ARE NOT VISIBLE AND PRACTICALLY IMPOSSIBLE TO USE. BECAUSE OF THE DESIGN AND MATERIAL OF THE SEAT, IT TAKES A LOT OF STRENGTH AND EFFORT TO PROPERLY FIND THE LATCHES AND CONNECT THEM TO CAR SEATS. MY WIFE HAS TRIED SEVERAL TIMES TO CONNECT OUR CAR SEATS TO THE LATCH SYSTEM. IT DOESN'T MATTER WHICH CAR SEAT SHE TRIES IT WITH, SHE IS UNABLE TO CONNECT THE LATCH BECAUSE OF THE WAY THE SEAT IS DESIGNED AND THE AMOUNT OF STRENGTH YOU NEED TO HAVE BECAUSE OF THE WAY YOU HAVE TO CONNECT THE CAR SEATS. ON MOST CARS, I CAN CONNECT A CAR SEAT IN UNDER 5 MINUTES TO THE LATCHES. SOME CARS IN A MINUTE OR LESS. WITH THE MIRAI, IT TAKES ME 5-10 MINUTES TO GET THIS INSTALLED. THE LATCHES WERE MADE MANDATORY TO ASSIST PEOPLE WITH EASE OF CAR SEAT INSTALLATION BUT THE DESIGN OF THE MIRAI HAS MADE IT NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE AND IMPOSSIBLE FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT STRONG ENOUGH TO MANUVER THE SEAT AND JAM THE CAR SEAT CLIPS THOUGH THE SEAT BOTTOM.

Negative 2017 Toyota Mirai car reviews

  1. Khalid Deckow 2024-07-06

Although it was a challenging situation, we were able to find a solution by purchasing a used Ford Fusion when we were unable to refuel our Mirai due to a lack of hydrogen availability. Despite the difficulties we faced, we persevered and successfully refueled our vehicle. We hope that in the future, there will be more reliable and accessible hydrogen stations to make refueling easier for everyone.

  2. German O'Reilly 2024-02-18

I recently purchased a 2017 certified Mirai from Longo Toyota and was initially attracted by the very attractive price and the complimentary fuel card worth $15,000. Although I had heard that hydrogen stations could be bothersome due to periodic fuel shortages, I decided to go ahead with the purchase. While the car itself has been okay, I have found that the customer support from Toyota has been lacking. Unfortunately, fueling stations are often out of fuel, especially on weekends, with the only guaranteed station being in Torrance. On my way to Torrance, I experienced a flat tire, which was the second time this had happened. It turned out that the dealership had installed a bad batch of tires. When I called for roadside assistance, they were unable to take the car to the tire shop and could only tow it to the nearest dealership. It took me four hours to tow my car to the dealership, and I discovered that only a few certified Toyota dealers can service the Mirai. If you ever need help from Toyota, it's best not to waste your time calling them. If you live far away from a certified dealership, your car can't be serviced elsewhere. If you file a complaint, you may be offered a $100 VISA gift card, but without sincere apologies. Although I used to be a big fan of Toyota, I would not buy a Toyota again. To any potential buyers, I would advise not to let the complimentary fuel card sway your decision.

  3. Izaiah Greenfelder 2024-01-05

When I purchased this car, the dealer presented me with a lot of information comparing its predicted resale value to other green technologies. Unfortunately, after 2.5 years, the car's value has significantly decreased to less than $10K, and fuel costs have risen. Despite the high fuel costs, Toyota does not offer continued support, and the car's high price tag and plummeting value make it difficult to sell. I would advise against purchasing this car until the infrastructure develops further in the next 5-10 years. Update 2/7/22 - I ended up paying the difference to get out from under the car. My rating remains the same.

Positive 2017 Toyota Mirai car reviews

  1. Anderson Jast 2024-06-25

I'm so glad to hear that you've been enjoying your car for the past week! It's great to hear that you're impressed with its performance, ride quality, and quiet interior. While fueling may be a bit pricey without Toyota's assistance, I'm glad to hear that the process was easy for you. I understand that storage space may be limited, but it sounds like the wireless phone charger in the center console is a convenient feature. Overall, it's wonderful to hear that you're happy with your solidly built car!

  2. Ephraim Ziemann 2024-02-22

Congratulations on your new Toyota Murai! It's great to hear that you were able to take advantage of the incentives and get a good deal. I hope the CA rebate is still available for you. It's understandable that you have concerns about the availability of hydrogen fuel, but it's great that you estimate using 30k of it. The Toyota Murai is a great choice for an alternate fuel vehicle, especially with the state and Uncle Sam subsidizing it. It's good to hear that it drives well and has modern safety features. Thank you for sharing your experience with us. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out.
