2021 Ford Bronco problems

ford logo

The Ford Bronco is a model line of SUVs manufactured and marketed by Ford. The first SUV model developed by the company, five generations of the Bronco were sold from the 1966 to 1996 model years. A sixth generation of the model line was introduced for the 2021 model year. The nameplate has been used on other Ford SUVs, namely the 1984–1990 Bronco II compact SUV and the 2021 Bronco Sport compact crossover.

Originally developed as a compact off-road vehicle using its own chassis, the Bronco initially competed against the Jeep CJ-5 and International Harvester Scout. For 1978, Ford enlarged the Bronco, making it a short-wheelbase version of the F-Series pickup truck; the full-size Bronco competed against the Chevrolet K5 Blazer and Dodge Ramcharger.

Following a decline in demand for large two-door SUVs, Ford discontinued the Bronco after the 1996 model year, replacing it with the four-door Ford Expedition; followed by the larger Ford Excursion. After a 25-year hiatus, the sixth-generation Bronco is now offered as a mid-size two-door SUV for the first time. It is also offered as a full-size four-door SUV with a 16 in (41 cm) longer wheelbase. It competes directly with the Jeep Wrangler as both a two-door and a four-door (hardtop) convertible.

From 1965 to 1996, the Ford Bronco was manufactured by Ford at its Michigan Truck Plant in Wayne, Michigan, where it also manufactures the sixth-generation version.

Common 2021 Ford Bronco problems

The Ford Bronco, introduced in 2021, has gained popularity as an off-road adventure vehicle, designed to compete with the Jeep Wrangler. However, like any vehicle, it is not immune to mechanical issues. Here are some common problems reported by Bronco owners:

  • Engine failure: The 2021 Ford Bronco is under investigation by federal safety officials for engine failure, which may affect 25,538 vehicles.
  • Transmission issues: Some owners have reported problems with shifting gears, slipping transmissions, or even complete failures. Regular maintenance, such as fluid changes, can help prevent transmission issues.
  • Electrical malfunctions: These can range from faulty wiring to issues with the dashboard displays. If you notice any flickering lights or erratic behaviour from your Bronco’s electrical system, it is essential to have it inspected by a qualified mechanic.
  • Fuel leaks: There have been numerous reports about problems regarding the Bronco Sport leaking fuel. A recall was issued in August 2021 (21V625000) due to a fuel leak that could cause a fire.
  • Paint chipping: The 2021 Ford Bronco Sport is prone to paint chipping, which can lead to corrosion and serious paint quality issues down the line.
  • 4WD overheating: The Bronco Sport, while not as off-road friendly as the larger Bronco, has experienced overheating issues in the 4WD system during off-road testing.
  • Suspension problems: The Bronco Sport has been recalled twice due to suspension problems, including missing or loose rear suspension bolts and incorrect front lower control arms.
  • Issues with the brakes: The Bronco Sport has experienced brake-related problems, including a severe lack of braking power, which led to a recall (21V922000).

When addressing these issues, it is crucial to find a reliable and experienced mechanic who specializes in Ford vehicles, particularly the Bronco model.

  • VIN: 1FMEE5DP8ML
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: Both rear shocks disassembled. The external reservoir to the factory 2021 Badlands bilstein shocks fell off at or around 36,000 miles. I did not hit a particular pothole, drive off road, it’s used for town/highway driving only, yet both external reservoir cylinders fell off at some point. These are solid cylinders that could cause damage to other vehicles. Now, my vehicle has an unsafe suspension ride, bouncy and kicks, and I’m scheduled for out of pocket repair.

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-01
  • VIN: 1FMEE5DPXML
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I had multiple issues with the window/door drivers side rear. At first the door would not open because of the window getting stuck up. The window would also get stuck open at times. The vehicle was brought back to the dealership 3x for this same issue. The top seam (weather strip) appeared to "fall" down and trap it and then other times the window wouldn't completely close and you could hear whistling sound from the air forcing through the space. This had been going on until this past week when while driving on the highway the window just shattered into pieces. Thankfully no one was in that seat at the time.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-10
  • VIN: 1FMEE5DP2ML
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: While driving my family of 4 the week before last, our Bronco without warning began shaking and then lost all power / ability to accelerate. I was able to pull to the side of the road before the engine completely shut off. A warning light then showed indicating “manual restart required” for which I could not locate any information in the manual. This happened in 110 degree heat and with young kids in the car. There was no previous warning and the engine would not reengage. Vehicle had to be towed 100 miles to Ford dealership nearer to our home. Dealership diagnosis indicated the problem was the fuel pump which then was replaced, although they did not acknowledge that this was a “known” issue. We were fortunate this happened in an area where we were able to pull over outside of a direct traffic lane and did not happen 15 minutes later where we would have been traveling at high speed on a busy freeway.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-08
  • VIN: 1FMEE5DH5ML
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: Ford Bronco windshield washer reservoir will no longer hold fluids. Multiple attempts to refill lead to the reservoir being empty. This is problematic as the windshield CANNOT be cleaned while driving the vehicle. Finally got an appointment with a Ford dealer to be told that the washer reservoir needs to be replaced, that they know these crack and fail, and that I was 9 days out of warranty. Dealership also stated there was a long backlog to get a replacement washer reservoirs (3-4 weeks minimum). There is no way that the reservoir could have been damaged by us (the owner) - it is nestled between the exterior and interior of the front quarter panel and inaccessible unless the exterior quarter panel is removed. This appears to be a well-known issue with Bronco owners as many forums (easily found in internet searches) have numerous complaints and discussions about the leaking washer fluid reservoirs.

SUSPENSION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-03
  • VIN: 1FMEE5DH2ML
  • Components: SUSPENSION
  • Summary: The stock bilstein shocks lost the reservoir for hydraulic fluids causing shock absorber to fail while driving. the canister simply fell off. I didn't hit anything other than normal bumps in the road. The vehicle has never been in an accident or offroad to cause the canister to fall off. Many other owners have complained on different blog sites about this same issue. This causes the vehicle to bounce uncontrollably since the shocks are rendered useless without the hydraulic canister/reservoir. Bouncing down the highway is super dangerous, and Ford didn't really seem to be worried that this is happening when I called the 800 Ford Assistance number two different times. I think a recall of these shock absorbers is required. I ended up having to pay for brand new shocks after 36,600 miles and Ford told me I had to use OEM (same bad designed shocks) to maintain my extended warranty. Please research and recall this dangerous part. Here is one forum discussing the issue. [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

  • VIN: 1FMDE5BH8ML
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: The prime screen fails, will not enable any system updates, interconnectivity via bluetooth devices fails...basically everything to do with the primary screen fails. We have documentation to show multiple visits to the dealership that have not been able to fix it. Most recently the dealer has a full screen replacement parts on backorder. They state they have no idea when the backorder will be resolved as they believe the factory will not ship the parts until they are no longer having quality control issues. This has been numerous visits to the deal on the same issue so we need to invoke the lemon law to address this problem.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-26
  • VIN: 1FMDE5BH7ML
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
  • Summary: Four hours into a drive today, going down a fairly steep hill @ ~30mph into a 4 point intersection my Bronco lost all power, brakes and steering. I mean it had nothing. We barely made it thru the intersection because the cars coming directly at us slammed brakes. I had no control and went off the road into someone’s yard, barely missing their fence. It was the scariest thing we’ve ever encountered. My son in the back screaming STOP at the top of his lungs is burned in my brain. What makes all of this worse is that Ford just had it in the shop for 3 days because the week before when they had my Bronco in the shop for yearly inspection/oil change and under their care it had the first symptoms of this issue. I received an app notice of a battery failure AND at their request because of this new issue they wanted my car for a “longer look” the following week. Today was first time driving it since they handed it back to me (I use the valet service that picks up and drops it back to me). Ford could come back and say they will give us a new car and there’s no way I can ever convince my wife to get back in this car. She was absolutely freaked out as the cars coming towards us would have drilled her door. It took Ford 4 hours to come 17 miles to tow us (probably a contractor) to the local Ford dealer that was closed by the time it arrived. We had to Uber to Enterprise and then drive the rental home four hours.

  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 1FMDE5BH2ML
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
  • Summary: The contact owns a 2021 Ford Bronco. The contact stated that while her son was driving at an undisclosed speed, the brake pedal was depressed but failed to stop the vehicle immediately. The brake pedal was extremely stiff while depressed. The brake warning light was illuminated. The vehicle struck a speed sign, causing the front driver's side mirror to shatter, and glass shards flew inside the vehicle, cutting the contact's son's left hand and arm. Medical attention was not received. The air bags did not deploy. No police report was filed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was determined that the brake vacuum hoses, front driver's side mirror, and quarter panel needed to be replaced. Only the brake vacuum hoses were replaced by the dealer. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that prior to the accident, the vehicle was taken to the dealer for the same issue; however, the dealer was unable to duplicate the failure. FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-29
  • VIN: 1FMEE5DP8ML
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: I was out offroading in remote desert of Oregon for hours. I stopped with the engine on to hook up my air compressor to refill the air in them before returning to pavement. Truck idled until timeout time and started back up without problem. Drove less than a mile and bronco started sputtering while attempted in move forward. Completed my turn onto the highway and realized there was a problem. Had barely enough time to get to the shoulder where the vehicle wouldn't start again. Pulled negative battery cable to reset, no help. It was very clear there was fuel delivery issue. Tank was full when I started my adventure and was still over half full when the fuel pump/module died. Luckily I just got back into cellular range and was able to call for a tow. I was on a blind corner as well. There really wasn't much time to get the vehcile to safety thus this complaint. Ford replaced the fuel pump and module, with the same part numers. There has since been a part modification. There are others who have had thier fuel pumps fail.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience as the first non-truck buyer in many decades. As an early reservation holder, I had to wait over 18 months to receive my vehicle, but let me tell you, it was definitely worth the wait! Driving it has been an absolute joy.

  3. Bernie Stoltenberg 2024-03-24

Going from a 4runner to this beast... holy cow! The ten-speed transmission, fuel economy, and technology are amazing! What a step up! I absolutely love it!

  4. Eino Rempel 2024-02-09

I've always wanted an old Bronco since high school. I remember seeing a 70's model for sale on a corner in the mid-90s and begged my parents for it. Unfortunately, it was around $5K back then and my parents refused. However, my dream finally came true this week! Although it's not a 70's model, it's a grown-up and spectacular revision of that once fond memory. I've only had the car for about 24 hours, but I'm already in love with it. The color, the ride, and the comfort are all amazing. I'm so happy with my purchase and can't wait for many road trips ahead!
