Common Isuzu Rodeo problems
The Isuzu Rodeo is a popular SUV that has been on the market for several years. However, like any vehicle, it is not without its share of common problems. Here are some of the most commonly reported issues with the Isuzu Rodeo, based on complaints from owners:
- Suspension corrosion: Suspension corrosion is another common problem reported by Isuzu Rodeo owners. This issue can lead to suspension failure, which can be dangerous, especially when driving at high speeds. The corrosion is often caused by exposure to road salt and other chemicals used to treat roads in cold climates. Regular maintenance and inspection of the suspension system can help prevent this issue.
- Fuel system problems: Fuel system problems are also common in the Isuzu Rodeo. Many owners have reported issues with rough idling, stalling, and hesitation when accelerating. These issues are often caused by a faulty fuel pressure regulator or fuel injector, which can lead to poor fuel economy and drivability issues. In some cases, a complete fuel system cleaning or replacement may be necessary.
- Electrical system problems: Electrical system problems are another common issue reported by Isuzu Rodeo owners. Many owners have reported issues with the power windows, door locks, and other electrical components, which can be caused by faulty wiring or connectors. Additionally, some owners have reported issues with the charging system, including a dead battery or alternator failure.
- Suspension and steering problems: Suspension and steering problems are also common in the Isuzu Rodeo. Many owners have reported experiencing a clunking or rattling noise when driving over bumps, which can be caused by worn suspension components such as ball joints or bushings. Additionally, some owners have reported issues with the power steering system, including leaks and failures.
In summary, while the Isuzu Rodeo is a generally reliable SUV, there are several common problems that owners have reported. These issues are often related to the engine, fuel system, electrical system, suspension, and steering. Regular maintenance and inspection can help prevent many of these issues, but potential buyers should be aware of the potential costs of repairs, especially when it comes to engine failure.

- Summary: In Florida, I purchased my 2004 Isuzu Rodeo March 2005 at 134 miles. I've always had issues, but didn't know how to articulate the issues. My truck sits/leans to the right and low in the back. It is uneven as if the shocks or struts are off. Driving one night, the truck slams down/drops low out of no where while driving. When I am driving and need to brake, I have to brake then brake again. I dare not make any sharp turns by parking or anything it's like the truck will slip or axels bend. I am have trouble with the engine currently(September 2022). Oil is leaking but you can't see from where. The engine is making loud rambling sounds. The exhaust sounds muffled. My car parts are not exact because my Rodeo is built like a demo, seemingly. Power Reduced & check engine light happens randomly usually while on the expressway. It slows the vehicle down in the middle of flowing traffic. I have to try to pull over turn car off then back on to try & reset the vehicle. The car now vibrates but don't know from where or cause. How can I get my car repaired?

- VIN: 4S2DM58W744
- Components: SUSPENSION,TIRES,WHEELS
- Summary: MY VEHICLE IS OPERATED IN MINNESOTA WHERE ROAD SALTS ARE IN CONSTANT WINTER USE. ON AUGUST 21, 2019 MY MECHANIC HOISTED MY SUV AND WE WATCHED WITH SURPRISE AS SOME FLAT RUST SLABS FELL TO HIS SHOP FLOOR. HE LOOKED ABOVE THE FALL LOCATION: THE SPARE TIRE IS ATTACHED JUST BELOW A WELL, AND WITHIN THE SPARE-TIRE WHEEL-GAPS WERE ADDITIONAL LOOSE RUST SLABS THAT HAD NOT YET FALLEN. THEY WERE REMOVED. THE MECHANIC THEN PONDERED A LIKELY CAUSE: HE REASONED THE METAL PLATE (AND/OR THE AREAS ALONGSIDE IT) THAT HELPS SECURE THE SPARE TIRE MIGHT BE EXCESSIVELY RUSTY. TO SEE IT HE HAD TO INSERT HIS HEAD UP INTO THE WELL, BUT WHICH DID NOT GIVE HIM ENOUGH OF CLEAR VIEW TO ASSESS THE MATTER ADEQUATELY (NOR COULD I MANAGE TO GET MUCH OF A LOOK). HE REASONED THAT MINNESOTA WINTER-SALT ROAD-SPRAY CAN REACH THE WELL (HE SAID THERE MIGHT BE SOMETHING THERE CALLED A CARRIER ASSEMBLY OF PARTS) AND CORRODE THE PLATE, MAKING IT POSSIBLE FOR THE SPARE TIRE TO COME LOOSE WHILE MY SUV IS MOTION, CREATING A ROAD HAZARD. WE DID PHOTOGRAPHY BUT DID NOT HAVE A FLEXIBLE-NECK CAMERA TO INSERT UP INTO THE WELL. SO ALL WE HAVE ARE SNAPS OF 1) MANY OF FLAT RUST SLABS THAT FELL DOWN DURING THE MECHANICS INSPECTION (SHOWN AS A PILE ON THE FLOOR JUST BELOW THE SPARE TIRE?S WELL LOCATION) IN ONE PHOTO, AND 2) AN UPWARD SHOT AT THE SPARE TIRE WITH SOME RUST SLABS THAT HAD NOT YET FALLEN, WHICH ALSO OFFERS A GENERAL LOOK OF WHEEL AND WELL RUST CONDITIONS THAT WE SAW. LASTLY, I DECIDED TO VISIT NHTSAS WEBSITE TO LOOK FOR SIMILAR INCIDENTS THAT MIGHT PERTAIN TO MY VEHICLE. I CAME UP WITH ID #10649039. IT OFFERS A SOMEWHAT SIMILAR TEXTUAL NARRATIVE DESCRIBING REAR FRAME RUST CONDITIONS THAT MAKES MENTION OF A SPARE TIRE. I CREATED A PDF OF PHOTOS AND INCIDENT ID #10649039, WHICH I WILL UPLOAD AFTER THIS PDF. IT WILL BE TITLED PART2_IJN5-55344_ISUZURODEO2004TIRESUPPORTFAILUREVIN[XXX].PDF. - Model: Isuzu Rodeo 2004
- Report Received Date: 2013-10-31
- Manufacturer: Isuzu Manufacturing Services of America
- Components: SUSPENSION:REAR
- Summary: Isuzu Manufacturing Services of America, Inc (Isuzu) is recalling certain model year 2003-2004 Rodeo and Axiom, and 2003 Rodeo Sport vehicles that were originally sold in, or are currently registered in, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, the District of Columbia, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Kentucky and Missouri. These vehicles may experience excessive corrosion near the forward mounting point bracket for the left or right rear suspension lower link.
- Consequence: The corrosion may allow the bracket to detach from the frame, impacting vehicle handling and increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Isuzu will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the rear suspension lower link bracket area. For vehicles in which little or no corrosion is found, the area will be treated with an anti-corrosive compound. For vehicles in which corrosion has damaged the rear suspension lower link bracket and affected its connection to the vehicle frame, a reinforcement bracket will be installed. In the event the corrosion is so severe that the reinforcement bracket remedy would not be sufficient, Isuzu will offer to repurchase the vehicle for an amount based on the Kelley Blue Book "Private Party" price. All inspections and remedies will be provided free of charge for vehicles that are 10 years old or less. For vehicles older than 10 years, Isuzu will offer a free remedy, but only if the vehicle is presented to an Isuzu service facility dealer within 12 months of when owner notifications were issued, after that time owners will be charged for the repairs. The recall is expected to begin in mid-December 2013. Isuzu owners may contact Isuzu at 1-800-255-6727.

Vehicle year: 1999
I bought my 99 Rodeo about 7 years ago 'used' with 30K miles. It has been the best auto I have ever had, and I have owned many! I have serviced and changed the oil regularly as scheduled. Now, it has over 135,000 miles and still runs great and is nice and tight. The only repairs made during my 105k ownership, aside from tires and brakes, were a starter replacement and a gasket leak to seal the transmission, which cost about $400.00. I have made many long trips, and it is a pleasure to drive. It averages 21 mpg on the highway at 70 and 75 miles an hour. I wish I could find another with lower miles; I would buy it in a heartbeat. It is a great mid-size SUV!

Vehicle year: 2002
Hey there! I just wanted to share my experience with my Isuzu Rodeos. My '93 Rodeo lasted an incredible 300,000 miles, and my current '02 model has been doing great with no mechanical issues. I drive an average of 350 miles per day, both in the city and on the highway. Thanks for listening!

Vehicle year: 1994
Hi there! Thank you for considering this car with 89000 miles. It has been a great car overall, with only two costly repairs needed - the starter and timing belt. The starter was replaced at 100000 miles (they can't last forever!) and the timing belt at 102000 miles (I don't think it was done at the manufacturer's suggested 60000 miles). Other than that, it runs strong. The lifter can be a little loud, but using high octane gas and changing the oil every 3000 miles can keep them quiet. Let me know if you have any questions!

Once you get it aligned with new off-road tires all around, this 5-speed manual shift wagon is really the best of all vehicles. You can drive in deserts and snow country with ease, and it's perfect for all-around daily use, short trips, and cross-country adventures. I've lived in both deserts and snow country across the U.S., and this vehicle has never let me down. I've owned a 1950s Land Rover 109 that was a beast compared to this Rodeo, but for daily use, this one is above the others.

I am extremely confident in the quality and value of my Rodeo. This is actually my second Rodeo, and I have never had any issues with either of them. In fact, I was recently in an accident and I truly believe that being in my Rodeo saved my life. I used the insurance money to purchase a newer model with upgraded features such as the 3.5L engine, gray trim, upgraded sound, and fog lights. I am absolutely in love with this vehicle and find it to be even better than my previous one. The interior is fantastic and the stereo controls on the steering wheel are a great feature. I am confident that this Rodeo will last me a lifetime, just like my previous one did. It is truly a shame that Isuzu stopped producing such high-quality and low-maintenance vehicles. I am proud to own one and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a reliable and long-lasting car.

I've owned this SUV for four years and it has less than 100k miles on it, with only 28k miles driven by me. Unfortunately, I wouldn't purchase another Isuzu. I've had to replace or repair several parts, including the gas gauge, brakes and drums, CD player, transmission, tires, shocks, air conditioning compressor, and water pump. Recently, I had to take it to the shop for an issue with the anti-lock brakes, which caused the car to shimmy when I applied the brakes. It also tends to rattle and squeak frequently. Overall, it's a great SUV if you're willing to put in the effort to maintain it.

I purchased this vehicle brand new from the dealership. From the very beginning, I noticed that I was only getting 13-15mph regardless of how I drove it. About three months ago, I noticed that the low oil light had come on. I immediately pulled over, checked the level, and added 4 quarts to bring it to full. I found it concerning that the warning light only came on when there was only 1 quart left in the engine, which is a little too low for a 5 quart engine. Since that day, I have been checking the engine every time I start it up for the day and have had the oil pan gasket replaced. Unfortunately, the engine started making a rapping noise on the day the oil got that low, and it has only gotten worse since then. The mechanic told me that it was just the lifters making a little noise. Yesterday, while driving, the engine seized, which was very frustrating.

I purchased the Rodeo used with 70,000 miles on it back in 2002. Since then, I have put on an additional 70,000 miles over the course of 6 years. During this time, I had to take the car in a couple of times to the Isuzu mechanic for factory recalls, which was great because it was free. The only other issues I had were a fluctuating gas gauge and a broken gas pedal, but these were also resolved by the mechanic. The A/C needs recharging every 3 years, which only costs $40 each time. As for the notorious squeaking that this car is known for, I simply took mine in to get every bolt tightened and the squeaks disappeared. If your mechanic is as honest as mine, it should only cost you about $50. Thank you for considering my experience with the Rodeo!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my Rodeo car that I purchased back in Oct 06. Unfortunately, I've had some trouble with the transmission and it has been in the shop 4 times. Even after having the transmission overhauled, it still isn't fixed. I've only been able to put 6000 miles on it because it's always in the shop for weeks at a time. The ride can be a bit bumpy, but the exterior looks great. If you're considering buying a Rodeo, I would suggest doing some research first. Thanks for listening!

Hi there! Thank you for sharing your experience with the Rodeo. It sounds like you've had some trouble with it, but it's great to hear that the exterior design has held up well. If you're in the market for a Rodeo, we would recommend looking for a 6-cylinder with 4-wheel drive for better performance in the snow. We hope this helps and wish you all the best!
