Common Isuzu Rodeo problems

The Isuzu Rodeo is a popular SUV that has been on the market for several years. However, like any vehicle, it is not without its share of common problems. Here are some of the most commonly reported issues with the Isuzu Rodeo, based on complaints from owners:

  • Suspension corrosion: Suspension corrosion is another common problem reported by Isuzu Rodeo owners. This issue can lead to suspension failure, which can be dangerous, especially when driving at high speeds. The corrosion is often caused by exposure to road salt and other chemicals used to treat roads in cold climates. Regular maintenance and inspection of the suspension system can help prevent this issue.
  • Fuel system problems: Fuel system problems are also common in the Isuzu Rodeo. Many owners have reported issues with rough idling, stalling, and hesitation when accelerating. These issues are often caused by a faulty fuel pressure regulator or fuel injector, which can lead to poor fuel economy and drivability issues. In some cases, a complete fuel system cleaning or replacement may be necessary.
  • Electrical system problems: Electrical system problems are another common issue reported by Isuzu Rodeo owners. Many owners have reported issues with the power windows, door locks, and other electrical components, which can be caused by faulty wiring or connectors. Additionally, some owners have reported issues with the charging system, including a dead battery or alternator failure.
  • Suspension and steering problems: Suspension and steering problems are also common in the Isuzu Rodeo. Many owners have reported experiencing a clunking or rattling noise when driving over bumps, which can be caused by worn suspension components such as ball joints or bushings. Additionally, some owners have reported issues with the power steering system, including leaks and failures.

In summary, while the Isuzu Rodeo is a generally reliable SUV, there are several common problems that owners have reported. These issues are often related to the engine, fuel system, electrical system, suspension, and steering. Regular maintenance and inspection can help prevent many of these issues, but potential buyers should be aware of the potential costs of repairs, especially when it comes to engine failure.

  • Summary: In Florida, I purchased my 2004 Isuzu Rodeo March 2005 at 134 miles. I've always had issues, but didn't know how to articulate the issues. My truck sits/leans to the right and low in the back. It is uneven as if the shocks or struts are off. Driving one night, the truck slams down/drops low out of no where while driving. When I am driving and need to brake, I have to brake then brake again. I dare not make any sharp turns by parking or anything it's like the truck will slip or axels bend. I am have trouble with the engine currently(September 2022). Oil is leaking but you can't see from where. The engine is making loud rambling sounds. The exhaust sounds muffled. My car parts are not exact because my Rodeo is built like a demo, seemingly. Power Reduced & check engine light happens randomly usually while on the expressway. It slows the vehicle down in the middle of flowing traffic. I have to try to pull over turn car off then back on to try & reset the vehicle. The car now vibrates but don't know from where or cause. • VIN: 4S2DM58W744
  • Components: SUSPENSION,TIRES,WHEELS
  • Summary: MY VEHICLE IS OPERATED IN MINNESOTA WHERE ROAD SALTS ARE IN CONSTANT WINTER USE. ON AUGUST 21, 2019 MY MECHANIC HOISTED MY SUV AND WE WATCHED WITH SURPRISE AS SOME FLAT RUST SLABS FELL TO HIS SHOP FLOOR. HE LOOKED ABOVE THE FALL LOCATION: THE SPARE TIRE IS ATTACHED JUST BELOW A WELL, AND WITHIN THE SPARE-TIRE WHEEL-GAPS WERE ADDITIONAL LOOSE RUST SLABS THAT HAD NOT YET FALLEN. THEY WERE REMOVED. THE MECHANIC THEN PONDERED A LIKELY CAUSE: HE REASONED THE METAL PLATE (AND/OR THE AREAS ALONGSIDE IT) THAT HELPS SECURE THE SPARE TIRE MIGHT BE EXCESSIVELY RUSTY. TO SEE IT HE HAD TO INSERT HIS HEAD UP INTO THE WELL, BUT WHICH DID NOT GIVE HIM ENOUGH OF CLEAR VIEW TO ASSESS THE MATTER ADEQUATELY (NOR COULD I MANAGE TO GET MUCH OF A LOOK). HE REASONED THAT MINNESOTA WINTER-SALT ROAD-SPRAY CAN REACH THE WELL (HE SAID THERE MIGHT BE SOMETHING THERE CALLED A CARRIER ASSEMBLY OF PARTS) AND CORRODE THE PLATE, MAKING IT POSSIBLE FOR THE SPARE TIRE TO COME LOOSE WHILE MY SUV IS MOTION, CREATING A ROAD HAZARD. WE DID PHOTOGRAPHY BUT DID NOT HAVE A FLEXIBLE-NECK CAMERA TO INSERT UP INTO THE WELL. SO ALL WE HAVE ARE SNAPS OF 1) MANY OF FLAT RUST SLABS THAT FELL DOWN DURING THE MECHANICS INSPECTION (SHOWN AS A PILE ON THE FLOOR JUST BELOW THE SPARE TIRE?S WELL LOCATION) IN ONE PHOTO, AND 2) AN UPWARD SHOT AT THE SPARE TIRE WITH SOME RUST SLABS THAT HAD NOT YET FALLEN, WHICH ALSO OFFERS A GENERAL LOOK OF WHEEL AND WELL RUST CONDITIONS THAT WE SAW. LASTLY, I DECIDED TO VISIT NHTSAS WEBSITE TO LOOK FOR SIMILAR INCIDENTS THAT MIGHT PERTAIN TO MY VEHICLE. I CAME UP WITH ID #10649039. IT OFFERS A SOMEWHAT SIMILAR TEXTUAL NARRATIVE DESCRIBING REAR FRAME RUST CONDITIONS THAT MAKES MENTION OF A SPARE TIRE. I CREATED A PDF OF PHOTOS AND INCIDENT ID #10649039, WHICH I WILL UPLOAD AFTER THIS PDF. IT WILL BE TITLED PART2_IJN5-55344_ISUZURODEO2004TIRESUPPORTFAILUREVIN[XXX].PDF. • Model: Isuzu Rodeo 2004
  • Report Received Date: 2013-10-31
  • Manufacturer: Isuzu Manufacturing Services of America
  • Components: SUSPENSION:REAR
  • Summary: Isuzu Manufacturing Services of America, Inc (Isuzu) is recalling certain model year 2003-2004 Rodeo and Axiom, and 2003 Rodeo Sport vehicles that were originally sold in, or are currently registered in, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, the District of Columbia, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Kentucky and Missouri. These vehicles may experience excessive corrosion near the forward mounting point bracket for the left or right rear suspension lower link.
  • Consequence: The corrosion may allow the bracket to detach from the frame, impacting vehicle handling and increasing the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: Isuzu will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the rear suspension lower link bracket area. For vehicles in which little or no corrosion is found, the area will be treated with an anti-corrosive compound. For vehicles in which corrosion has damaged the rear suspension lower link bracket and affected its connection to the vehicle frame, a reinforcement bracket will be installed. In the event the corrosion is so severe that the reinforcement bracket remedy would not be sufficient, Isuzu will offer to repurchase the vehicle for an amount based on the Kelley Blue Book "Private Party" price. All inspections and remedies will be provided free of charge for vehicles that are 10 years old or less. For vehicles older than 10 years, Isuzu will offer a free remedy, but only if the vehicle is presented to an Isuzu service facility dealer within 12 months of when owner notifications were issued, after that time owners will be charged for the repairs. The recall is expected to begin in mid-December 2013. Isuzu owners may contact Isuzu at 1-800-255-6727.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I noticed that your Rodeo has 157,000 miles on it, but it sounds like it's still going strong! You mentioned that you bought it used with 29,000 miles on it and have taken it all over the east coast. That's so cool! I'm glad to hear that the frame still looks good despite the upper spring perches rusting off of the frame rail. It's great that you were able to find some new perches from a junk yard down south. I hope the weld comes out okay so that you can run this vehicle for another 157,000 miles. I understand that it uses more oil than it should, but it's good that you're keeping an eye on the level. Going forward, it sounds like you'll only be using it for New England winters. Stay safe out there!

I really enjoyed the Rodeo, although I must say I had some issues with the engine. Unfortunately, the Isuzu V6's have a major design flaw that has caused many Isuzu owners from 1998 to at least 2005 to have to replace their engine at least once. This V6 engine has caused Isuzu to close around half of their dealerships and has put them very close to going out of business. Around 60k miles, the engines begin using lots of oil and usually end up with a spun bearing.

The car has experienced significant transmission issues since the day after purchase, including jerking when accelerating and frequent mechanical failures. The build quality of the car is subpar, with parts falling apart easily.

My Rodeo used to run like a dream, with only minor irritations, until November 2003. However, at just 38000 miles, the dealership informed me that the entire engine needed to be replaced due to a flaw in the design. Unfortunately, the dealership made the problem worse when I took it in for an electrical short at 50K, which caused the car to completely stop on a busy road. Despite my attempts to seek support from both the dealership and Isuzu Corporate, I have not received any assistance. Therefore, I have decided it is time for a trade-in.

After 8 years and 195000 miles, I have decided to sell my car. It has been through 3 countries and 6 states, and has been a reliable companion until it hit about 180000 miles, when I had to rebuild the engine. It's time to say goodbye to my old friend. :)

I purchased my '96 SUV with 91K miles after thorough research and a brief rental. I absolutely adore the way this vehicle handles, it feels tight and well-balanced. I always use Michelin tires which further improve the handling. I have had to replace the alternator and starter due to normal wear and tear, but I appreciate how the Japanese make rubber parts that last for a long time. Even after 12 years, my truck still looks clean and sharp. I would not hesitate to buy another one and highly recommend it to everyone. Although my truck has an unusual oil reading, constantly 1 quart low, my mechanic has informed me that this is common with all Rodeos and it has not caused any related issues. While the head gaskets haven't been super tight since purchase, they are still holding up well.

No problems except for the lug-nuts. They should do a recall on this design problem.

After encountering some issues, I ultimately decided on purchasing a Rodeo. I took a chance on it and managed to get it for a great price of $4500, despite it being a 1995.5 model. So far, it has been working great and has a lot of power. Although I did notice a ticking sound in the engine after switching to Mobile 1 10w30, I believe this is a common issue due to the small oil pathways to the rocker arm lifters. However, this is not a major problem and does not harm the engine. Isuzu recommends using 0w 30 mobile 1 to flush the gunk and stop the ticking, which I plan to try during my next oil change.

My Rodeo is an amazing vehicle that never lets me down, whether I'm driving in 100+ degree weather in downtown gridlocked traffic or four-wheeling up in the hills. It's the most fun and reliable vehicle I've ever owned. Although Ken's comment about the lug nuts is 100% accurate, I recently replaced all of my lug nuts after putting new tires on. The tire guy had to cut three of the studs to remove one tire. The only other issue I had was a bad fuel injector, but after spending $65 and a couple of hours in a hot parking lot, my Rodeo was up and running like the champ it is! I'm sure my kids will love this truck as much as I do!
