Common 1999 Infiniti Qx4 problems
The Infiniti QX4 1999 is known for several common problems based on complaints from owners of this car. The most-reported problem is with the 1997 Infiniti QX4 for shaking from the rear. Although the 2003 Infiniti QX4 has the most overall complaints, the 2002 model year is rated as worse due to other factors such as higher repair cost or more problems at lower mileage.
One of the common problems with the Infiniti QX4 1999 is erratic idle speed and increased accelerator pedal effort. This issue can be caused by a faulty throttle position sensor, which can lead to a rough idle and difficulty accelerating. The problem can be resolved by replacing the faulty sensor, but it can be costly and time-consuming.
Another common problem with the Infiniti QX4 1999 is the failure of the viscous coupling of the transfer case due to improper operation, such as installing wheels of different diameters
. This problem can lead to a complete loss of four-wheel drive and can be expensive to repair.
The Infiniti QX4 1999 is also known for problems with the airbags, steering, fuel system, electrical system, and structure. The largest recall of the model came in 2002 when cars were invited to dealerships for troubleshooting with 5 issues. The common problems for this model include steering (7), airbags (6), fuel system (5), electrical (2), and structure (1).
In addition to these problems, the Infiniti QX4 1999 has also had issues with the radiator cracking, tie rods, and heat shield rattle. These issues can lead to decreased performance, decreased fuel efficiency, and increased repair costs.
In summary, the Infiniti QX4 1999 is known for several common problems based on complaints from owners of this car. These problems include erratic idle speed and increased accelerator pedal effort, failure of the viscous coupling of the transfer case, problems with the airbags, steering, fuel system, electrical system, and structure, and issues with the radiator, tie rods, and heat shield. These problems can lead to decreased performance, decreased fuel efficiency, and increased repair costs, and can be expensive and time-consuming to fix.
How many miles can a INFINITI QX4 last?
Simply the most reliable car I've ever owned. I am the 2nd owner and bought this car in 2011 at 134,000 , give or take. My work has me commuting all over, and in a mere 9 years I have racked up another 180,000 miles. In the past, I would consider selling a car approaching that 200,000 milestone.
When did they stop making INFINITI QX4?
The INFINITI QX4 production run ended following the 2003 model year. The 'QX' branding would continue on to have an impact on INFINITI's sport utility and crossover product selection.
Is INFINITI QX4 body on frame?
But don't let all this luxury fool you. The QX4 is still one tough soldier. Like the Pathfinder, the QX4 uses MonoFrame construction, a hybrid of unibody and body-on-frame design, providing a solid platform.
Why is my INFINITI QX4 not starting?
The most common reasons an INFINITI QX4 won't start are a dead battery, an alternator problem, or failed starter.

- Summary: ON NOV. 4TH, 2013, I WAS DRIVING MY CHILD TO SCHOOL. I BEGAN TO TURN LEFT & THE CAR SUDDENLY JERKED US TO THE LEFT & THEN WENT OUT OF CONTROL. AS WE WERE JERKED TO THE LEFT, I FELT THE STEERING WHEEL JERK AND THEN IT STARTED SPINNING LIKE A TOP. THERE WAS NO WAY TO CONTROL THE STEERING. WE SLAMMED INTO AN EMBANKMENT AND MY 7 YR OLD DAUGHTER HIT HER HEAD. ONCE WE GOT HOME, I CONTACTED A MECHANIC WHO SAID THAT HE THOUGHT THERE WAS A RECALL SO I CONTACTED NISSAN. THEY SAID THERE WAS A RECALL ON "SOME" OF THE 1999 NISSAN INFINITIS, BUT HAD NO WAY OF KNOWING IF MINE WAS ONE OF THEM. I CONTACTED THE MECHANIC WHO SAID TO GIVE NISSAN MY VIN AND THEY SHOULD BE ABLE TO GIVE ME MORE INFO. CALLED NISSAN BACK AND THEY WERE EXTREMELY RUDE AND SAID THEY HAD ALREADY DISCUSSED THIS WITH ME THE PREVIOUS DAY. I TOLD THEM THAT A MECHANIC HAD TOLD ME TO CALL BACK & GIVE THEM MY VIN, SO I DID. SHE STILL WOULD NOT HELP. I ASKED TO SPEAK TO A MANAGER AND SHE SAID THAT I WAS NOT A "CASE" SO I WOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO SPEAK TO ONE & SHE WOULD NOT GIVE ME A NAME. I STATED THAT WE WERE IN ACCIDENT, & JUST BECAUSE WE LIVED THROUGH IT, DID NOT MEAN THAT WE DID NOT DESERVE ANSWERS. ONCE SHE HEARD THAT THERE WAS ACCIDENT, SHE SAID THAT THEY HANDLE THAT DIFFERENTLY & HAVE TO ASSIGN A CASE NUMBER TO IT THEN. THEY TOOK MY INFO AND THE PROCESS BEGAN. I DID NOT RECEIVE A RENTAL FROM THEM UNTIL THE END OF NOV, SEVERAL WEEKS AFTER THE ACCIDENT. I HAD PICTURES OF MY OWN, & THE STEERING COLUMN IS BROKE IN HALF, WHICH I PROVIDED THEM AS WELL. A CLEAN BREAK ALL THE WAY THROUGH. ON DEC 4TH I RECEIVED AN OFFER LETTER TELLING ME THAT I HAD 7 DAYS TO ACCEPT, OR THEY WOULD TAKE MY RENTAL AND I WOULD HAVE TO CLAIM MY CAR, WHICH HAD BEEN DEEMED UN-DRIVABLE AND UN-INSURABLE. BASICALLY TAKE THIS RIDICULOUS OFFER, WHICH WAS LOW, OR YOU GET NOTHING & HAVE TO PAY FOR YOUR RENTAL, HAVE NO CAR AND AN INJURED DAUGHTER. *TR

STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2012-01-02
- VIN: JNRAR07Y8XW
- Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: THE IGNITION KEY, AT TIMES, WOULD NOT ROTATE SO AS TO ALLOW THE DRIVER TO START THE VEHICLE. VEHICLE WAS REPAIRED BY AN INFINITI DEALER WHO COULD NOT EXPLAIN WHAT WAS WRONG WITH THE IGNITION KEY OR ASSEMBLY, OR WHY THE PART FAILED. AS A SAFETY ISSUE I ASKED INFINITI USA TO LOOK INTO THE MATTER AND THEY PRETTY MUCH GAVE ME THE "BRUSH-OFF" WITHOUT ANY EXPLANATION. I SEE THIS A A MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE CONSIDERING A PERSON(S) COULD BE STRANDED IN ANY WEATHER CONDITIONS IF THE IGNITION DID NOT ALLOW THEM TO START THE VEHICLE. IF IN A REMOTE AREA A PERSON COULD EASILY FREEZE TO DEATH WITHOUT BEING ABLE TO START THE VEHICLE. I DON'T BELIEVE THE PART SHOULD HAVE FAILED CONSIDERING THE MINIMAL AMOUNT OF MILEAGE ON THE VEHICLE AT THE TIME. THIS IS NOT A NORMAL PART THAT A PERSON COULD HAVE MAINTAINED TO HAVE IN A WORKING CONDITION, IT IS SUBJECT TO FAILURE AT ANY GIVEN TIME BASED ON WHAT I HAVE BEEN TOLD. THIS IS NOT YOUR NORMAL ITEM SUBJECT TO WEAR AND TEAR, IT NEEDS TO BE INVESTIGATED FURTHER. *TR

STEERING,SUSPENSION,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2010-08-15
- VIN: JNRAR07YXXW
- Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I BROUGHT MY 1999 INFINITI QX4 TO THE DEALER TO DETERMINE WHY THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON WHILE I WAS DRIVING. THEY TOLD ME THAT MY STRUT TOWER WAS SEPARATED AND IT NEEDED TO GO TO A BODY SHOP. THE BODY SHOP TOLD ME THAT THE PROBLEM WAS THAT THE METAL ALONG STRUT TOWER WELDS WAS ROTTED, POSING A DANGER OF COLLAPSE ON THE STEERING COLUMN. THEIR CHECK OF THE PASSENGER SIDE FOUND THE SAME PROBLEM, ALTHOUGH IT'S LESS SEVERE. I HAVE PHOTOS AND VIDEO. THEY WANTED OVER $6,000 TO FIX IT. INSURANCE WOULDN'T COVER IT SO I TOOK IT BACK TO INFINITI. THEY BROUGHT IT TO A BODY SHOP THEY USE AND FIXED THE DRIVER'S SIDE FOR $1800. THEY SAID THE PASSENGER SIDE WASN'T A PROBLEM TO WORRY ABOUT. THE DEALER IS AWARE OF THIS PROBLEM WITH THE QX4 AND SUGGESTED I COMPLAIN TO THEIR CORPORATE OFFICE. CORPORATE WOULDN'T ACKNOWLEDGE THE ROTTING AROUND WELDS AND SAID THERE'D BE NO COMPENSATION BECAUSE IT'S OUT OF WARRANTY. I SAVED THE PARTS. I BELIEVE INFINITI SHOULD PAY FOR THE FIX OF THE PASSENGER SIDE AND REIMBURSE MY $1800. THEIR MECHANICS AND DEALERS KNOW THIS IS A PROBLEM BUT CORPORATE WILL RISK CUSTOMERS LIVES FOR PROFIT.

1999 Infiniti Qx4 recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 1999 Infiniti Qx4.
- Manufacturer: NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC.
- Components: STEERING:COLUMN
- Summary: NISSAN IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 1996-2004 PATHFINDER AND MODEL YEAR 1997-2003 INFINITI QX4 VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD, OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN, CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, IOWA, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, MASSACHUSETTS, MAINE, MARYLAND, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MISSOURI, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, VERMONT, WASHINGTON D.C., WEST VIRGINIA AND WISCONSIN. IN AREAS OF THE COUNTRY IN WHICH HEAVY CONCENTRATIONS OF ROAD SALT ARE USED, A MIXTURE OF SNOW/WATER AND SALT MAY ENTER AN ASSEMBLY LOCATION HOLE IN THE UPPER STRUT HOUSING, CAUSING WATER TO COLLECT AT THE MATING SURFACE OF THE STRUT HOUSING PANEL AND THE INNER HOOD LEDGE ASSEMBLY. OVER TIME, THIS SNOW/WATER AND SALT INTRUSION MAY RESULT IN CORROSION OF THE STRUT TOWER HOUSING IN SOME SUBJECT VEHICLES.
- Consequence: THE STRUT HOUSING MAY CRACK AND PULL AWAY FROM THE INNER HOOD LEDGE ASSEMBLY. THIS MAY LEAD TO GRINDING NOISES, INCREASED STEERING EFFORT, AND POSSIBLY THE STEERING COLUMN TO BREAK, RESULTING IN THE LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
- Remedy: NISSAN WILL INSPECT THE STRUT HOUSING AND REPAIR THE VEHICLES AS NECESSARY, FREE OF CHARGE. AN INTERIM NOTIFICATION LETTER WAS SENT OUT IN MAY 2011. THE SECOND NOTICE WAS MAILED ON JULY 25, 2011. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.
- Manufacturer: NISSAN NORTH AMERICA, INC.
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY:FILLER PIPE AND CAP
- Summary: ON CERTAIN VEHICLES ORIGINALLY SOLD IN OR CURRENTLY REGISTERED IN THE STATES OF CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, IOWA, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, KENTUCKY, MASSACHUSETTS, MAINE, MARYLAND, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, TENNESSEE, VERMONT, VIRGINIA, WEST VIRGINIA , WISCONSIN AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, DURING THE COATING PROCESS OF THE FUEL FILLER TUBE ASSEMBLY, AN INSUFFICIENT AMOUNT OF COATING MAY HAVE BEEN APPLIED AT THE LOWER MOUNTING BRACKET. THIS COULD RESULT IN AN OPENING IN THE COATING WHICH CAN ALLOW WATER TO ENTER AND MAKE CONTACT WITH THE BARE METAL OF THE TUBE.
- Consequence: THIS MAY RESULT IN SURFACE RUST BUT NOT PERFORATION OF THE TUBE. HOWEVER, IN THOSE AREAS OF THE COUNTRY WHICH USE HEAVY CONCENTRATIONS OF ROAD SALT IN THE WINTER, IF A MIXTURE OF SNOW/WATER AND SALT MAKES CONTACT WITH THE BARE METAL, CORROSION MAY OCCUR TO A DEGREE WHICH RESULTS IN PERFORATION OF THE TUBE. IN THIS CASE FUEL LEAKAGE MAY OCCUR WHEN FILLING THE TANK. FUEL LEAKAGE, IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE, COULD RESULT IN A FIRE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FUEL FILLER TUBE ASSEMBLY WITH A NEW ONE WITH AN IMPROVED COATING PROCESS. THE RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 26, 2007. OWNERS MAY CONTACT NISSAN AT 1-800-647-7261.

Positive 1999 Infiniti Qx4 car reviews

This is a really well-built SUV. The previous owner had zero problems since buying it new and kept all the records. There was a small front seal leak at 125K, but it was replaced prior to purchase, along with the water pump, just as a precaution. It's very quiet and smooth compared to its Pathfinder sibling.
-
The vehicle is stylish and comfortable, but it can be a bit bulky. It doesn't have much pick-up, but it still gets the job done.
-
I've owned 5 Infiniti's since 1994, and this is my second QX4, which I still absolutely love. One of the things I appreciate most about my Infiniti is the exceptional service I receive when I take my vehicle in for maintenance. The staff always make me feel like their top priority, providing me with a loaner and getting me in and out in no time at all. I'm definitely planning on buying another one in the future!
-
The Infiniti QX4 is definitely worth the investment. It's not only reliable but also very affordable. I've been driving my QX4 for a year now, and it has never given me any trouble. The roadside assistance is a great feature, and the premium package with heated seats is a luxurious touch. I would highly recommend this SUV to anyone looking for an affordable yet luxurious vehicle.
-
All around excellent vehicle. Although it may be underpowered, it is still quite capable.

What a great vehicle! It rides and looks great. However, it is true that the engine could use a bit more power.
Jerry Homenick 2024-07-24
This car is known for its reliability, but it may not be the best option for those who prioritize power and fuel efficiency. It has a sleek design and a comfortable interior, which adds to its appeal. If you're interested in this car, it's recommended to consider a newer model as Infiniti made significant improvements after the 1999 model. However, if you're able to find a great deal on a 1999 or earlier model, it may still be worth considering despite its lower performance and fuel efficiency. It's important to note that this car has limited range on the freeway. In comparison, my 1998 Pontiac Bonneville gets 50% better gas mileage both on the freeway and in town.

Excellent driving with true superior handling and comfort!! Gas Mileage is not great.

This car is great, but the oxygen sensors can be a bit of a hassle. With four of them, it can get expensive at $140 each time they need to be replaced. I've already had to change them all, including one twice. It's frustrating to see the 'service engine soon' light come on, especially after just getting the car serviced. On top of that, the 6 CD changer is having some issues, which is surprising for a car with less than 53,000 miles on it.
