The Hyundai Santa Fe (Korean: 현대 싼타페) is an automobile produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 2000. It is a five-door crossover SUV that either has front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. It is named after the city of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and was introduced for the 2001 model year as Hyundai's first SUV. The Santa Fe was a milestone in the company's restructuring program of the late 1990s because the SUV was a hit with American buyers. Between 2006 and 2012, the Santa Fe was positioned between the smaller Tucson compact crossover and the larger Veracruz.

The third-generation Santa Fe introduced in 2012 was available in two versions, which are regular (short) and extended long-wheelbase version. The short model was sold as the Santa Fe Sport in North America (three-row seating was not available) and simply Santa Fe in global markets (three-row seating was standard or optional), while the extended long-wheelbase model is called the Santa Fe in the US, Santa Fe XL in Canada and called the Hyundai Maxcruz in South Korea. The fifth and current generation was released in 2023 and omits diesel engines in favor of petrol hybrid powertrains.

As of 2022, the Santa Fe is positioned between the smaller Tucson – which the Santa Fe shares platform with – and the larger Palisade in Hyundai's global crossover SUV line-up.

  • Erratic Shifting Between Gears: Some owners have experienced erratic shifting from the transmission within the first 20,000 miles. This issue is often a sign of a problem with the transmission control module, which can be resolved by updating the software on the module, costing around $100.
  • Frequent Dead Batteries: Certain Santa Fe models have shown frequent dead battery issues within the first 15,000 miles. The vehicle's many electrical accessories can drain the battery while it sits. Diagnosing these electrical problems can typically be done by a shop for around $100, with repair costs ranging from $20 to $300, depending on the source of the issue.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-31
  • VIN: KM8SNDHF4GU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? Engine failure due to oil consumption How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? Car attempted to die on a highway, this could have been dangerous had I been in the outside 'fast' lane when it struggled. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes, the dealer has confirmed the engine needs a full replacement Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? No, only the dealers service center has inspected the vehicle Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? Yes. There was a blink engine light shortly before the car engine died. However, there was no indication the oil was low in the engine. The oil light did not come on.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-01
  • VIN: KM8SRDHF4GU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I purchased this vehicle less than a year ago from a dealership, used. I noticed the oil consumption after the first few months was unreasonably high. I have to keep a large jug of oil in my car and add the oil at least every two weeks or so depending on the miles I drive. I noticed other Hyundai owners complain of the same issue and some being resolved. However, my VIN is showing no open recalls at the moment.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-05
  • VIN: 5XYZTDLB7GG
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: Engine has serious recall that I was not made aware of during purchase. My car has been burning oil and the engine has been on. I've taken out to several local mechanics who said "these model Hyundai's burn oil once they are over 100,000 miles" and that I would just need more frequent oil changes. I was also told the engine light was either an old code being thrown, or the pump valve, but nothing to worry about because it really only effects gas milage. My engine went out and I had to get it towed to another mechanic, who upon seeing the car, knew it had an engine recall and could hear a distinctive knock in the engine due to a failing rod bearing. Upon Hyundai's request, we towed it to a dealership to have them inspect it. They agree it's the engine that's bad, but since a "knock sensor" was never installed by the previous owner, they say they are not liable to cover the repair, and that since the recall is "public knowledge", it was my responsibility to find out. If you go onto the NHTSA.gov website, and type in my VIN number, the information says "0 unrepaired recalls", therefore making it impossible for me to have known about the recall without Hyundai letting me know, which they didn't.

SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-27
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: 5XYZUDLB0GG
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE
  • Summary: Driving on a slight upgrade, lost power and smoke started to come out of the vents and from under the hood. Had no brakes and by the time we were able to drift to a stop, the engine compartment was on fire. There was no warning lights. Witnesses saw fire under the car while we were coming to a stop. The car and all contents were totally consumed. Following some research on NHTSA vin decoder we found that this car has the same engine (GDI THETA II) that has been involved in many fires and is involved in class action suits. Even though this car has the same engine, it was never recalled. That may indicate that there are other cars out there that may have the same problem but have not been informed.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-18
  • VIN: KM8SRDHFXGU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: We were driving through our neighborhood at about 25 mph and we heard a slight knocking noise and then the engine shut off, no warnings or lights, just engine failure. The electronics worked, but car wouldn’t start. Had it towed to a local mechanic where he said the engine is seized. We were thankful this happened at a low speed in a safe place, can’t imagine how awful it would have been if we’d been going 75 mph down the 4 lane interstate. Of note, we have always kept the vehicle current on oil changes/maintenance. Prior to this, the car drove great! Never had any issues that would point to impending trouble.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-16
  • VIN: 5XYZU3LB1GG
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: Was driving on a 5 hour car ride at 5pm on August 16th and was going up a hill, the vehicle quickly lost all power and the engine light lit. I was able to pull the car to the side of the road with the momentum that the car already had, but was not able to get the car to a safe space (its about 6 inches from an exit ramp lane), as the car would not drive. Once I got the car to the side of the road, I checked the engine and did not see any excessive heating or anything out of the ordinary. I tried to restart the car and the check engine light is lit and the battery system for the car turns on but the car will not start or try to turn over the engine. The car is currently sitting on the side of the road. My wife and my dog were in the car and we had to quickly move to a safer place away from the 70 MPH traffic. Calling a tow truck tomorrow to take it to a dealership. It was a little scary that the engine power cut out like that without giving an engine light notice in advance or giving time for me to navigate to a more safe space to park it.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-03
  • VIN: KM8SNDHF5GU
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The door on the drivers side does not lock. It appears that something came out of place causing the door to remain unlocked even with the use of the fab. The car is not drivable because the door swings open. It has happened in a few occasions where the lock appears to get stuck but was always fixable. On this occasion it was not. Thankfully, I was parked when this occurred.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,WHEELS,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-06
  • VIN: 5XYZT3LB8GG
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,WHEELS,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Abs system is randomly locking up calipers causing a dangerous speed wobble. Dealership can't re create so won't diagnose. Have had to replace all brake calipers and components were near new but ruined because of abs applying brakes when unnecessary. Vehicle is very unsafe to drive, pulled hard to left at one point veering me into oncoming traffic. Independent mechanic has made caliper release by manually releasing abs system. Same results were not found by releasing pressure at master cylinder making abs the obvious culprit. No warning lights but I just replaced two cracked rotors on rear at 130k miles. That should not happen. Has caused hub readings of 270 on three different tires at 3 different times. Santa fe has recall on this system for every year but mine, very curious as to why not. If this was not a dealership only part , it might not be such a big issue, but being it is main source of stopping a 4000 lb vehicle, I have concerns. Hyundai dealership was very condescending and of little to no help. I have an Independent are certified mechanic who is happy to talk with you if needed. Please help, as of right now am.making payments on an unsafe vehicle with not much hope of it being fixed.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE,BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-30
  • VIN: 5XYZUDLBXGG
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE,BACK OVER PREVENTION
  • Summary: Vehicle was driven on a highway approximately 45-50 mph when a loud knocking sound occured. The vehicle began to shake erratically and a bunch of lights displayed. I pulled over at a safety point and turned the vehicle off to inspect it. A large amount of smoke poured from under the hood. The vehicle sat for about 45 minutes to cool down before I attempted to start it again. The engine continued to make a loud knocking sound and kept stalling. At the given time of engine failure, I was driving on a fairly busy highway with my two toddlers where we were forced in a dangerous situation to be struck by a vehicle. Hours later, I went back to start the vehicle where I was able to get it started and drive approximately 15 mph to a safer area for the vehicle to be parked. The vehicle has been at the Hyundai Bowser Chippewa location in Beaver Falls, PA. I was denied for any assistance through Hyundai and the BBB-Hyundai due to 3 open recalls, mainly the engine knock system not being updated. All issues and diagnostics were conducted at the dealership where the vehicle is being stored. No police report has been filed, nor was an insurance claim conducted. No lights or warnings came about until the engine started to noticably fail. I didn't receive any notifications from Hyundai regarding recalls, and nothing is displayed on the NHTSA site.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-03
  • VIN: KM8SNDHF8GU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: On July 3, 2024 my husband was driving our 2016 Santa Fe with a v6 engine on a highway. He was coasting down a hill going approximately 65mph when he heard a loud bang and saw something shoot off to the left of the vehicle. When he tried to brake, he realized the car had shut off and he did not have automatic steering or breaks. He managed to get the car safely pulled off the highway by using all his weight to stand on the brakes and turn the car. The car did not start up again. When we got the car towed home, we were looked under the hood and found that the engine had shot a rod. We found pieces of the engine/rod along the bottom of the engine bay. We called local mechanics as well as Hyundai service center and got quotes for repair ranging from $9-20k. The car was purchased in July of 2023, the engine had 97k miles on it, with 8k miles being put on from July 2023-July 2024. The vehicle passed PA state inspection on June 2, 2024 by the dealership’s service center.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-10
  • VIN: KM8SRDHF9GU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: The vehicle began making a knocking sound upon starting. I contacted the local dealership for a service appointment and learned that they were out a couple of months on their appointment schedule. A day or two later, my vehicle shut off while driving, I was fortunate to have enough momentum to pull of the road safely. Upon having it towed to a local mechanic, I learned that the engine seized and needed to be replaced. I contacted Hyundai and they have scheduled me for an appointment next week. Keeping my fingers crossed they will do right by me since I have always had the vehicle serviced at their Hyundai dealership. The car has approximately 118,300 miles on it.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-15
  • VIN: KM8SMDHF9GU
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: On 5/15, I was entering the highway when the vehicle refused to accelerate. I pushed the gas pedal all the way to the floor, and the vehicle did not respond. I checked to see if it had stalled, but the engine was still running. I watched the rpm meter as I pushed the accelerator, and noticed that the rpm’s stayed at 1.5 the entire time. I pulled over to the shoulder and turned off the vehicle as I was afraid of causing an accident as I was not at highway speed at the time. I turned the vehicle back on and when it was safe, attempted to reenter the highway. The vehicle responded appropriately. The check engine light had come on 2 days prior to this (5/13) and I was in the process of trying to make an appointment to get it fixed. My husband ran the engine code (P0014 and P0024). The check engine light had turned off upon restarting the vehicle but turned back on about 3 minutes after resuming driving. I took the vehicle to a mechanic to have it looked at, and they noticed that the engine had lost 4 quarts of oil. There had been no oil leakage noted at any time. They added 3 quarts of oil to the engine and noticed that the knocking sounds remained. Their determination was that the car was pretty much totaled. There were no indicator lights on the dashboard to notify me that there was low oil at any time. The only indicator that showed was the check engine light 2 days before.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-01
  • VIN: KM8SMDHF9GU
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: Around three weeks ago, we start listening to a knocking noise in the engine. As soon as we heard this noise, we took it to a mechanic near our home and the mechanic told us that there was an internal problem with the engine and we needed to take it to an official Hyundai dealership to solve this problem. Moreover, they told me this is a common problem in Hyundai's cars and the dealership would do it for free. When I took it to the dealership, they told me that I had to replace the chain timing, tensioners, CVV, and many other stuff needed (I'm sending the receipt attached, see "car report 2024.pdf"). It was going to take 10 hours of work. Importantly, this was not covered by the Hyundai warranty or recalls. I bought the car 3 years ago, and both the previous owner and I did the year service to the car. I'm sending all the receipts and CARFAX of the services. Best regards, [XXX] . • Summary: Engine light came on while driving and vehicle began to malfunction with bogging and little power to move the vehicle properly. Vehicle was towed to Hyundai dealership for diagnostics. Determining that there is rod bearing failure in the motor. Contacted Hyundai corporate who denied warranty claim citing I did not properly maintain the vehicle per owners manual although they were provided with records of proper maintenance, however it was disregarded by Hyundai warranty people as proper maintenance. I have contacted BBB and PA Attorney General for assistance but to no avail. There are countless others with the same exact issues where Hyundai Motor America is denying warranty claims for identical mechanical motor issues.

Negative 2016 Hyundai Santa fe car reviews

  1. Cullen Gusikowski 2024-09-08

Update 3/12/13: The accessory power issue continues to be the most annoying and irritating thing about this vehicle for me. I’m still trying to learn that I cannot plug in my phone or listen to the radio without running the engine! Update 3/12/17: The battery discharge warning issue is more persistent and annoying than ever! My original review follows. In this review, I want to focus on the one big problem I have with my 2016 Hyundai Limited Ultimate SUV which I wish I had known about before making the purchase. In general, I agree with other reviewers that this is a good vehicle overall and a good value. It does most things you'd expect from a modern SUV quite well. However, buyers should be aware that you cannot sit in the vehicle and listen to the very excellent sound system in this vehicle without the engine running! If you do, you will get a loud beep sound every two minutes or so along with a warning that you are discharging the battery. This beep tone is just as loud as the music so you cannot ignore it. Unfortunately, the dealer has advised me that this is so you don't discharge the battery, which of course is important. However, I wish they had designed this car so that something like just listening to the radio could be done without having to run the engine. On the side of Hyundai, if the battery does go dead, there is a lengthy restart process to get all of the technology reset back to where it was before the battery died. This could potentially generate additional service calls, but for someone like me (and plenty of other folks I am sure) who just likes to sit in their vehicle and listen to their music on that excellent sound system, this is a huge issue and unacceptable. There are many vehicles out there with equal or more technology than this one that do not have this problem. It seems to be a design error on the part of Hyundai. If I had known about this in advance, I would have never purchased this vehicle. I am not looking forward to the next five years of this! However, I am hopeful that Hyundai will take some kind of corrective action in future models if this issue gets enough attention. I am still holding out hope that there may be some future firmware update from Hyundai which may resolve this issue or at least diminish it somewhat on their current offerings. If not being able to use the radio and other accessories in this vehicle without the engine running is not an issue for you, then you will be quite happy with this vehicle.

The Hyundai/Kia engines have been a topic of concern for many, but I can confidently say that my 2016 Hyundai Santa Fe Limited was an exceptional vehicle until the unfortunate incident on 5/16/23. Despite the unexpected warning lights and loss of power steering and brakes, I was able to safely navigate to a stop. Although my particular engine, the 3.3l V6, has not yet been recalled, I am aware of the issues that have been reported with other engines. The cost of repairs may seem daunting, but I am confident in the value of my vehicle and the expertise of the dealer. With 108,000 miles, my Santa Fe has proven to be a reliable and worthwhile investment.

Despite the challenges I faced with my Santa Fe, I have been persistent in seeking resolution from the dealer, Hyundai's customer care, and corporate. Although the pump shut off every two seconds when I first bought it, the tank and all associated parts were replaced. However, I still encounter difficulties when refueling in extreme weather conditions. Additionally, I have been experiencing issues with the screen, which only comes on after the car has been driven for more than 20 minutes. Despite having an extended warranty and the car only having 44,000 miles on it, the dealer has been reluctant to replace it. While I have had a good experience with the car's performance, I am disappointed with the customer service and will consider other options in the future.

At 85,500 miles, the head gasket on our Sante Fe failed, and unfortunately, the block had to be replaced as well. While it was disappointing that Hyundai did not cover the cost of repairs due to the car being out of warranty, I believe that the parts were defective from the start. It is rare for a head gasket to fail at such low mileage, and even the dealer was surprised. As someone who has owned cars for 40 years and driven them over 130,000 miles, I have never experienced a head gasket failure before. While this experience has left me disappointed, I remain confident in my ability to make informed decisions about future car purchases.

I bought my Sante Fe Sport a year and a half ago after researching the safety ratings and affordability of various SUVs. Living in a high traffic area, safety was my top priority. Unfortunately, last week I was rear-ended by a Toyota Tacoma going too fast for the area while I was sitting at a red light. The truck hit me so hard that it knocked out the back glass of my hatchback. However, thanks to the side curtain airbags that deployed instantly, none of my injuries were life-threatening. Although I still need further medical treatments, I am grateful for the safety features of the Sante Fe. Currently, we are waiting for the insurance company to decide whether my SUV can be fixed or if it will be totaled out. My husband and I have already decided that if it is totaled out, we will be heading straight back to the dealership for another Hyundai Sante Fe Sport!

It's big, but not too big, with fabulous acceleration and a great price!

This has been an excellent vehicle for the price I paid. I have had no problems with it and the performance is outstanding for its size. It does just as much as the pick-up truck I traded in for it. When it's time to purchase a new vehicle, I will probably go back to Hyundai because of the excellent service I received from this Santa Fe. The maintenance has been very affordable and I have never had to get it repaired. It's been a win-win situation for me with just normal service.

Make sure to buy from a dealer who truly cares about your business and ensure that the vehicle you choose has not been previously smoked in.
