The Audi Quattro is a road and rally car, produced by the German automobile manufacturer Audi, part of the Volkswagen Group. It was first shown at the 1980 Geneva Motor Show on 3 March. Production continued through 1991.

Background

The word quattro is derived from the Italian word for "four" to represent the fact that the vehicle delivers power to all four wheels. The name has also been used by Audi to refer to the quattro four-wheel-drive system, or any four-wheel-drive version of an Audi model. The original Quattro model is also commonly referred to as the Ur-Quattro - the "Ur-" (German for "primordial", "original", or "first of its kind") is an augmentative prefix. The idea of such a car came from the Audi engineer Jörg Bensinger.

The Audi Quattro was the first rally car to take advantage of the then-recently changed rules that allowed the use of four-wheel drive in competition racing. It won consecutive competitions for the next two years. To commemorate the success of the original vehicle, all subsequent Audi production automobiles with this four-wheel-drive system were badged with the trademark quattro with a lower case "q" letter.

The Audi Quattro shared many parts and platform with the Coupé version of the Audi 80 (B2). The quattro was internally designated Typ 85, a production code it shared with the quattro versions of the Audi Coupé. Its characteristic flared wheelarches were styled by Martin Smith. The Audi Quattro also had independent front and rear suspension.

Common 1994 Audi Quattro problems

The Audi Quattro, particularly the 1994 model, has been known to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. These problems range from engine issues, transmission problems, electrical problems, and wear and tear on tires and brakes.

One of the most common issues with the Quattro is related to the engine. Some Quattro models are known to experience oil leaks, which can cause damage to the engine if left unchecked. Owners should keep an eye out for signs of an oil leak, such as a drop in oil pressure or the presence of oil on the ground beneath the car. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent oil leaks and catch them early if they do occur.

Another issue that some Quattro owners may encounter is related to the transmission. Some models are known to experience problems with the transmission slipping or shifting harshly. This can be caused by a variety of factors, including low transmission fluid levels or a faulty transmission control module. If you experience any issues with your Quattro's transmission, it's important to have it inspected by a qualified technician to determine the underlying cause and prevent further damage.

In addition to engine and transmission issues, some Quattro models may also experience electrical problems. Common issues include faulty sensors, malfunctioning power windows, and problems with the car's audio system. These problems can be frustrating and difficult to diagnose, so it's important to work with a qualified technician who has experience working with Audi vehicles.

Lastly, like all high-performance sports cars, the Quattro can be prone to wear and tear on its tires and brakes. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent premature wear and ensure that your Quattro performs at its best.

In addition to the above-mentioned common problems, the third generation Audi Quattro, produced from 2005 to 2016, has been known to have advanced electrical systems which have been a common source of issues. One of the most prevalent problems with the electrical system is the failure of the car's computer module, which controls various aspects of the vehicle's operation, such as engine timing, fuel delivery, and transmission shifting. This can lead to poor performance, difficulty starting, and even stalling.

Another electrical issue that has been reported is a faulty alternator, which can cause a car's battery to die prematurely or not charge properly. This can result in the engine not starting or the car stalling while driving.

The third-generation Audi Quattro has also had problems with its wiring harness, which can cause various electrical issues, such as blown fuses, malfunctioning lights, and electrical shorts. These issues can be difficult to diagnose and repair, and can be expensive to fix.

Lastly, the car's power windows and sunroof can also experience electrical issues, such as not opening or closing properly or getting stuck. This can be caused by faulty switches, motors, or wiring, and can be frustrating for the car owner.

It's important for Audi Quattro owners to have these electrical issues diagnosed and repaired promptly by a qualified mechanic to prevent further damage to the vehicle's electrical systems.

In summary, the Audi Quattro, particularly the 1994 model, has been known to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. These problems include engine issues, transmission problems, electrical problems, and wear and tear on tires and brakes. It's important for Quattro owners to be aware of these issues and to have their vehicles inspected and maintained regularly to prevent further damage and ensure the best performance.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2002-03-05
  • VIN: WAUBW84C4RN
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: LIFE THREATENING DEFECT ---URGENT !!! THROTTLE ASSEMBLY STICKS IN WIDE-OPEN POSITION. ACCELERATOR HAS NO CONTROL OF ENGINE SPEED AND CANNOT BE USED TO REDUCE ENGINE SPEED FROM WIDE OPEN STATUS. FAILURE OCCURS WITHOUT WARNING AND VEHICLE CANNOT BE RESTRAINED EXCEPT BY HEAVY BRAKING OR SWITCHING OFF IGNITION KEY -- A VERY DANGEROUS THING TO HAVE TO DO IN HEAVY TRAFFIC OR FROM HIGH SPEEDS. IF CAR IS RESTARTED AFTER INCIDENT HAPPENS ENGINE WILL IMMEDIATELY RACE TO FULL RPM AND WILL POTENTIALLY DESTROY ENGINE ITSELF IF NOT IMMEDIATELY SHUT OFF. THIS IS A VERY, VERY DANGEROUS DEFECT! MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE HAPPENED ON A CITY STREET WHILE APPROACHING AN INTERSECTION. FORTUNATELY I WAS ABLE TO SWITCH OFF IGNITION IN TIME TO STOP SAFELY BY BRAKING (NO POWER ASSIST WITHOUT ENGINE RUNNING.) CAR WAS TOWED TO AUDI DEALER AND DIAGNOSED (AFTER 5-DAYS) AS HAVING DEFECTIVE THROTTLE BODY --SPECIFICALLY THAT THE THROTTLE BODY "MOTOR" WAS "STUCK." THIS APPEARS TO BE AN ELECTRICALLY ACTUATED THROTTLE BODY WHICH MUST NOT HAVE A MECHANICAL SAFETY OVERRIDE SYSTEM. COST OF REPAIRS QUOTED AT $1975.00 ($1500 FOR NEW THROTTLE BODY ALONE.) VEHICLE IS PRESENTLY IN UNREPAIRED STATE AND AVAILABLE FOR INSPECTION BY NHTSA IF NECESSARY. I REPEAT --THIS IS A TRULY DANGEROUS LIFE THREATENING DEFECT ASSOCIATED WITH THESE VEHICLES. PLEASE REACT QUICKLY TO PREVENT SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH TO DRIVERS OF SIMILAR-EQUIPPED VEHICLES. *AK
