Development of the LS began in 1983 as the F1 project, the code name for a secret flagship sedan. At the time, Toyota's two existing flagship models were the Crown and Century models – both of which catered exclusively for the Japanese market and had little global appeal that could compete with international luxury brands such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Jaguar. The resulting sedan followed an extended five-year design process at a cost of over US$1 billion, and premiered with a new V8 engine and numerous luxury features. The Lexus LS was intended from its inception for export markets, and the Lexus division was formed to market and service the vehicle internationally. The original LS 400 debuted to strong sales, and was largely responsible for the successful launch of the Lexus marque.
Since the start of production, each generation of the Lexus LS has been manufactured in the Japanese city of Tahara, Aichi. The name "LS" stands for "Luxury Sedan", although some Lexus importers have preferred to define it as "Luxury Saloon". The name "Celsior" is taken from Latin word "celsus", meaning "lofty" or "elevated".

On March 19, 2020, Toyota expanded the recall to include 2015 Lexus GS350 vehicles. The low-pressure fuel pump inside the fuel tank may fail.
- Consequence: If the fuel pump fails, the engine can stall while driving, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel pump, free of charge. The recall began May 4, 2020. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-888-270-9371 or Lexus customer service at 1-800-255-3987. Toyota's numbers for this recall are 20TB02 and 20TA02 for Toyota vehicles and 20LB01 and 20LA01 for Lexus vehicles.

Shop the Germans first, then come see the Lexus LS460, bring your checkbook...Well Over a year later and my LS460 just keeps on pleasing. I'm so happy with my choice! My friends with the German cars are finally realizing that Lexus might have something. Unfortunately, their cars are costing them a fortune in JUST ROUTINE maintenance, not to mention repairs. On the other hand, I love my $59.00 Mobile 1 oil changes and free car washes at the local Lexus Dealership. It's been such a great experience!

I recently upgraded from a 2001 LS430 to a 2014 LS460, after reading recommendations on the Lexus owners site. I must say, it was the right decision! The car handles beautifully, and while it's not a sports car, it's perfect for everyday driving. Compared to the boat-like feel of the 2001 model, the 2014 LS460 is a dream. The fuel consumption is decent, but not amazing, even when driving in ECO mode. However, with a 4.6L V8 engine and 380 horsepower, you need to feed it to feel the power. The comfort setting is incredibly smooth and quiet, and the seats are divine - supportive and comfortable, even for someone as tall as me (I'm 6'6''). The steering wheel could be a bit further out, but that's just a minor issue. When you hit the accelerator, the car really goes - perfect for anyone who wants a powerful ride. The build quality is also top-notch, as expected from Lexus. Unlike its competitors, you don't need a bottomless wallet to maintain and repair a used Lexus. Reliability is key for many drivers, and Lexus delivers on that front. Some people have complained about the mouse used to manipulate the screen, but I found it easy to use after a bit of practice.

I have owned 4 Lexus cars, but none of them compare to my LS 460. It's sleek, sexy, and comfortable, and it makes me feel rich! People often ask me what year it is, and I just laugh and walk away. I would never drive any other car. Lexus for life!

The car is really enjoyable to drive, but there are a few issues that I've encountered. Firstly, the automatic window wiper rain sensor is supposed to wipe automatically during rain storms, but unfortunately, it has never worked for me. The dealer has tested it and says it passes, but in real-life driving conditions, it doesn't work. Secondly, the battery is difficult to access if you need to use jumper cables. Lastly, the control panel/radio is operated with a joystick, which requires you to take your eyes off the road. It's like having to look down at a computer operated with a mouse while driving, which isn't very safe. Overall, I still enjoy driving the car despite these issues.
