The Hyundai Sonata (Korean: 현대 쏘나타) is a mid-size car that has been manufactured by Hyundai since 1985. The first generation Sonata, which was introduced in 1985, was a facelifted version of the Hyundai Stellar with an engine upgrade, and was withdrawn from the market in two years due to poor customer reaction. While the nameplate was originally only sold in South Korea, the second generation of 1988 was widely exported.

The Sonata is currently manufactured in South Korea where their headquarters are located, China and Pakistan. It was named after the musical term, sonata.

First generation (Y1; 1985)

The first Sonata was introduced to compete with the Daewoo Royale series and was a more luxurious version of the Stellar. It included cruise control, power seats, head lamp washers, power brakes, electric operated adjustable side mirrors and chrome bumper trims. The Sonata was available with two trim options in Korea: Luxury and Super (the latter only available with a 2.0-liter engine). In the domestic market Hyundai attempted to sell the Sonata as an executive car using catchphrases like "Luxury car for VIP"; however, as the Sonata was based on the Stellar without any major changes, it was seen by the public as no more than a luxury version of the Stellar. In 1987 Hyundai added two tone color schemes and a trip computer option, but sales soon went down and the car was discontinued in December of that year. The Sonata was sold only in the South Korean domestic market. The vehicle was unveiled in South Korea on 4 November 1985.

Engine choices included 1.6-liter Mitsubishi Saturn (only available outside the domestic market), 1.8- and 2.0-liter Mitsubishi Sirius inline-fours. The latter unit also found its way into the 1987 and later Stellar, and in MPI form the 1986 Hyundai Grandeur. The body was a largely unchanged Hyundai Stellar.

It was sold in New Zealand (right hand drive) with the 1.6-liter Mitsubishi engine with the five-speed manual gearbox; an automatic transmission was an optional extra. The original importer was a unit of the Auckland-based Giltrap Motor Group.

The final version of the Stellar was known as the Stellar 88 and was launched to celebrate the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. Afterwards, Hyundai discontinued the Stellar and replaced it with the all-new Sonata.

Common Hyundai Sonata hybrid problems

Based on the complaints from owners of Hyundai Sonata Hybrid cars, several common problems have been reported. These issues include:

  • Engine Failure: Owners of the 2011 Sonata Hybrid have faced engine failure problems, with an average cost to fix of $7,200 and an average mileage of 91,000 miles. Additionally, engine seizing has been reported in the 2012 Sonata Hybrid, with an average cost to fix of $5,000 and an average mileage of 89,000 miles.
  • Faulty Speed Sensor: Many owners of the 2012 Hyundai Sonata have encountered issues with shifting gears due to a faulty speed sensor. This has led to vehicles producing clunking noises, shuddering, and difficulty in gear selection. Fortunately, the replacement speed sensor is relatively affordable, costing between $30 to $50.
  • Defective Speakers: Some Hyundai Sonata models, particularly those from 2011 to 2016, have been reported to have defective speakers. Owners have experienced issues where the CD player, navigation, radio, and phone calls did not produce audio. A simple fix involved disconnecting and reconnecting the negative battery terminal to resolve this issue.
  • Seat Belt Safety Recalls: Hyundai issued recalls for certain Sonata models due to seat belt safety concerns. In 2017, recalls were made for 2011-2014 Sonatas and 2011-2015 Sonata Hybrids due to faulty seat belt linkages that could fail to restrain occupants during a crash, increasing the risk of injury. These recalls aimed to address issues with the seat belt anchor pretensioner and ensure passenger safety.
  • Engine Seizure and Class Action Lawsuit: Engine failure in the 2011, 2012, and 2013 Hyundai Sonatas has been a significant problem, leading to engines seizing up while driving. This issue resulted in a class-action lawsuit against Hyundai, where affected owners received settlements covering engine repair and replacement, towing expenses, and rental fees. The settlement also extended warranties for certain Sonata models with specific engine types.

These common problems reported by Hyundai Sonata Hybrid owners highlight various mechanical and safety issues that have affected the driving experience and reliability of these vehicles.

Latest negative Hyundai Sonata hybrid car reviews

  1. Nigel Sporer 2025-04-21

    Vehicle year: 2014

I leased this car with the expectation of great features and excellent MPG. While my first tank lasted an impressive 550 miles, subsequent tanks have been disappointing. Despite my cautious driving style, my average gas mileage has been as low as 16mpg, which is far below my expectations. While I was initially sold on the comfortable seats and advertised MPG, I have been let down by the actual performance of the vehicle. I would caution anyone who lives in a cold climate and does not do a lot of long distance driving to avoid this car. However, I remain confident in my decision to trade in my old SUV for a more fuel-efficient vehicle.

  2. Alvis Yundt 2025-04-21

    Vehicle year: 2012

I have experienced several electronic problems with my Hyundai, which unfortunately are not covered by warranty. Despite having to replace the radio three times, I have lost the blue tooth and navigation features as I am unwilling to pay for another repair. The transmission had to be replaced at 65,000 miles, which was fortunately covered. However, I am currently experiencing random hybrid warning alarms that the local dealership has been unable to diagnose. Although the Hyundai website has information on the issue, it seems that no one is able to access it. While I initially loved the appearance of this car and was satisfied with my purchase, I am now eager to switch to a more reliable vehicle from a company that values customer satisfaction and loyalty.

  3. Mckenna Cole 2025-04-18

I have 1600 miles on 2011 Sonata Hybrid and have averaged 31 mpg over mostly highway driving to and from work 90 mile round trip which is 80% highway with light traffic and very few traffic lights.Performance between 20-35 mph is sluggish, and engine clearly overrevs in that range. Bluetooth connection with my Samsung Galaxy Edge Droid does not work. You can establish a temporary connection which I did when I test drove the vehicle, but it does not hold.Streaming audio almost never works due to bluetooth phone issues.Sunroof rattles at highway speed.Front windshield fogs up on outside all the time from bottom to about 12".I prefer my 2004 Prius with 189K miles & 45mpg.

I was excited to purchase a hybrid engine, but unfortunately, I experienced four breakdowns which made me realize that it was time to say goodbye. Each time the car malfunctioned on the highway, it just stopped and wouldn't start. Pressing on the accelerator was pointless. Despite the technicians finding nothing wrong with the car after checking the engine codes, the car was returned to me without any repairs after 3-4 days in the shop. I don't blame the mechanics, but there seems to be a design flaw in this car. It's important to be aware that if something goes wrong with the engine or battery, the car will not accelerate. Thankfully, my wife and I are still safe. Although I am still committed to buying a hybrid engine, I will definitely not be purchasing one from Hyundai.

I bought my 2012 Sonata Hybrid brand new from the dealership. It was my first 'fancy' car, as I had always gone for either base models or used cars in the past due to financial difficulties. However, I was finally in a position to spoil myself a bit and justify the expense in fuel savings, or so I thought... On the highway, I can get 38-40 miles per gallon, and even more if I'm cruising, but only if the weather is nice and traffic is light. Here in the Midwest, we experience temperature extremes that greatly affect fuel economy, and stop-and-go city driving averages 32 mpg, which is nowhere near what they had advertised. My friends all say I drive like an old man, so I know it's not just me...

My wife and I were in the market for a sedan and had narrowed our options down to the Accord, Fusion, Subaru Legacy, Sonata, and Optima. We decided to test drive them and visited the Hyundai dealer to try out the Sonata Limited. I was particularly interested in the Limited with the Ultimate package as it had all the features that my 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland had. We didn't want to give up the heated and ventilated seats, which the Sonata with the Ultimate package had, along with all the latest safety technology. Interestingly, the Accord with Honda Sensing doesn't include Blind Spot Monitoring, which was a must-have feature for me. While we were talking to the salesperson, my wife found a brochure for the Sonata hybrid and we decided to give it a try. The salesperson was right - the driving experience was different and we loved it so much that we ended up buying a silver one. What I really appreciate about the hybrid is how comfortable and quiet it is to drive and ride in. The safety technology, especially the SCC (Smart Cruise Control), is a great feature that I use all the time. With only 300 miles on the car, I'm already getting around 44 mpg in mainly suburban driving. It seems to have plenty of pickup, although I haven't really put that to the test yet. Plus, with the drive modes, you can choose Normal or Sport for more performance. We live close to the mountains just outside of Denver and I have taken it on some winding mountain roads and it handles the curves very well. The only downside is that it doesn't have Apple Carplay. Overall, we had a great experience with the Sonata hybrid and highly recommend it.But when I connect my iPhone to the USB port, both the USB and Bluetooth connections work seamlessly.

I've owned this car for over two years now and I'm happy to report that I haven't had a single issue with it. The mileage has been great, especially during my long commutes. I compared it to the Honda Accord and while the Accord claims to have better mileage, it comes at a much higher cost. The space in the car is fantastic, with plenty of room in the front and back seats as well as the trunk. The hybrid battery doesn't take up too much space either. The car is very comfortable to drive, although some of the electronics like the lane departure and collision warning can be a bit intrusive. However, I'd rather be safe than sorry. The warranty and lifetime warranty on the hybrid battery are also great perks. I've recommended this car to many people and would still recommend it today. While the mileage does drop a bit in the winter, it's not a huge issue. The car does burn a bit of oil between oil changes, but it's not a major concern. Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase and would definitely recommend this car to anyone looking for a reliable and comfortable vehicle.Hyundai says this is normal. Although I'm not thrilled, I understand that some cars use more oil. It's just surprising to me that my Suburban with 190,000 miles uses less. The driver's seat is starting to show some wear, which I think is a bit early given that I drive longer distances. However, I'm still very happy with the car overall. I've owned it for over 2 years now and have just over 91,000 miles on it, mostly highway. I haven't had a single issue! The biggest issue I've had is that it's now burning oil, about 1 quart every 1,000 miles on average. I'm checking the oil all the time now. I had it to the dealer, which was very helpful. They worked with Hyundai and said that it is within spec. It's crazy, but at least there are no other problems. The MPG has dropped into the mid to upper 30s, which is really disappointing. As long as I can get another 24-30 months out of it, I guess I'll be okay. I've now owned the car for over 4 1/2 years. In Sept of 2020, I had significant driving issues. It was just outside of the warranty. After 4 months in the dealership for multiple repairs - some partially paid by Hyundai and some by me and some the dealership ate - two engines, entire exhaust from front to back, multiple wiring harnesses, manifolds, etc. It wasn't fun, but now everything is brand new, except for the transmission. Even though Hyundai paid part and the dealership ate part, it still cost me nearly $4,000. Since my crazy repair story, things have calmed down and there have been no issues at all. The car is driving great and everything is holding up very well. The interior is in good shape, although the driver's seat is showing some wear, but nothing too crazy.I've owned the car for 5 and a half years now. Although the mpg has decreased from the low 40s to the mid to upper 30s, it's still been great. The car is extremely roomy, still drives well, and everything else is holding up well. I do have some issues with the cruise control that I need to get looked at. I changed the brakes just because, but the original brakes lasted for nearly 145,000 miles! I've owned the car for over 6 years now and I'm happy to report that there haven't been any new issues. The car is running great and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it stays that way for a few more years. At 158,000 miles, the water pump stopped working and it took a few days to figure out that it was just the electric water pump that needed replacing. Once the part was installed, there were no further problems. The car is still driving well and getting good gas mileage.

Purchased Limited 2.4L 4-cyl. Hybrid 6 speed automatic. The car is not slow or noticeably shifty when merging into traffic. The ride is smooth and braking is precise. If you drive like a teenager then this car may not be for you.I travel approx. 90m a day, mostly highway miles. Avg. miles 44.5 per gallon. I am saving serious money on gas! The seats are comfortable and the cabin (two tone camel/black) is roomy. The dashboard is pleasant to look at and the navigation system is easy to manage. I am so happy I did not dismiss this car based on the expert reviews. Find out for yourself and test drive this car, you won't be disappointed.Three year update: I am disappointed that I pay a higher insurance premium simply because of the lithium battery.7 year update: Replaced the trunk battery, and replaced a hose that caused the car to overheat in year six. Since the car is garaged, it still looks good and rides good as well. I'm not complaining about the mileage. Next step will be a tune-up. Eight years and still rolling over 170,000m.10 years and still rolling over 200,680 miles. Recent problems replaced battery in the trunk $280, tires $450, air-conditioning unit $1000. Noticeably slow shifting on incline. I still love my car.

This car is truly exceptional. With almost 60,000 miles on the clock, it has proven to be a reliable and efficient vehicle. Despite some minor issues with the navigation programming and the accuracy of the MPG indicator, it has exceeded our expectations. The added weight of the electric motor and battery has made it a force to be reckoned with, especially in heavy rain. We are confident that this car will continue to serve us well for many years to come.

I've put around 4,000 miles on my 2013 Sonata Hybrid LTD (without a sunroof). I've heard some people complain about the brakes on this car, but personally, I think they're fine (although I don't tailgate!). They do take a bit of getting used to at first, but it's important to remember that the brakes are designed to capture energy when you slow down and brake, which helps recharge the HEV battery. I've found that gentle, steady braking is the way to go, and it's definitely paid off at the pump!
