Hyundai Sonata hybrid problems

The Hyundai Sonata (Korean: 현대 쏘나타) is a mid-size car that has been manufactured by Hyundai since 1985. The first generation Sonata, which was introduced in 1985, was a facelifted version of the Hyundai Stellar with an engine upgrade, and was withdrawn from the market in two years due to poor customer reaction. While the nameplate was originally only sold in South Korea, the second generation of 1988 was widely exported.
The Sonata is currently manufactured in South Korea where their headquarters are located, China and Pakistan. It was named after the musical term, sonata.
First generation (Y1; 1985)
The first Sonata was introduced to compete with the Daewoo Royale series and was a more luxurious version of the Stellar. It included cruise control, power seats, head lamp washers, power brakes, electric operated adjustable side mirrors and chrome bumper trims. The Sonata was available with two trim options in Korea: Luxury and Super (the latter only available with a 2.0-liter engine). In the domestic market Hyundai attempted to sell the Sonata as an executive car using catchphrases like "Luxury car for VIP"; however, as the Sonata was based on the Stellar without any major changes, it was seen by the public as no more than a luxury version of the Stellar. In 1987 Hyundai added two tone color schemes and a trip computer option, but sales soon went down and the car was discontinued in December of that year. The Sonata was sold only in the South Korean domestic market. The vehicle was unveiled in South Korea on 4 November 1985.
Engine choices included 1.6-liter Mitsubishi Saturn (only available outside the domestic market), 1.8- and 2.0-liter Mitsubishi Sirius inline-fours. The latter unit also found its way into the 1987 and later Stellar, and in MPI form the 1986 Hyundai Grandeur. The body was a largely unchanged Hyundai Stellar.
It was sold in New Zealand (right hand drive) with the 1.6-liter Mitsubishi engine with the five-speed manual gearbox; an automatic transmission was an optional extra. The original importer was a unit of the Auckland-based Giltrap Motor Group.
The final version of the Stellar was known as the Stellar 88 and was launched to celebrate the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. Afterwards, Hyundai discontinued the Stellar and replaced it with the all-new Sonata.

- Defective Speakers: Some Hyundai Sonata models, particularly those from 2011 to 2016, have been reported to have defective speakers. Owners have experienced issues where the CD player, navigation, radio, and phone calls did not produce audio. A simple fix involved disconnecting and reconnecting the negative battery terminal to resolve this issue.
- Seat Belt Safety Recalls: Hyundai issued recalls for certain Sonata models due to seat belt safety concerns. In 2017, recalls were made for 2011-2014 Sonatas and 2011-2015 Sonata Hybrids due to faulty seat belt linkages that could fail to restrain occupants during a crash, increasing the risk of injury. These recalls aimed to address issues with the seat belt anchor pretensioner and ensure passenger safety.
- Engine Seizure and Class Action Lawsuit: Engine failure in the 2011, 2012, and 2013 Hyundai Sonatas has been a significant problem, leading to engines seizing up while driving. This issue resulted in a class-action lawsuit against Hyundai, where affected owners received settlements covering engine repair and replacement, towing expenses, and rental fees. The settlement also extended warranties for certain Sonata models with specific engine types.
These common problems reported by Hyundai Sonata Hybrid owners highlight various mechanical and safety issues that have affected the driving experience and reliability of these vehicles.

Vehicle year: 2018
Updating review - After driving almost 19K miles, I can confidently say that the engine, electric motor, and transmission work flawlessly together. The transition between modes is seamless and efficient, and the 6-speed transmission is far preferable to a CVT, even if it means sacrificing a few MPGs. There is no droning noise, and I mostly drive in Eco mode, which provides excellent fuel efficiency. When I switch to Sport mode, the combined torque and HP turn the car into a pretty nice sport sedan. Although the suspension is supposed to tighten in Sports mode, I found it to be a very modest tightening. Speaking of fuel efficiency, I have been averaging 44 MPG over the course of 12 months living in NE USA. Although all batteries lose efficiency in the winter months, they make up for it in the summer. The interior is laid out in a way that makes it easy to navigate the controls, and the seats are excellent with good thigh support. The only downside is the Halogen headlights in the SE edition, as the low beams do not produce enough light. In my opinion, all cars at this point should have LED headlights as standard. (I installed aftermarket LEDs, and they work flawlessly.) After one year, I am confident that I made the right decision going with the Sonata Hybrid. I expect my next car will be fully electric, and at this point, I would choose a Hyundai.

Vehicle year: 2016
I recently traded in my 2011 Toyota Camry Hybrid XLE for a 2016 Sonata Hybrid Limited. I must say, I am absolutely in love with my new car! It has all the features of a high-end car, such as ventilated seats and a panoramic sunroof. The ride is incredibly smooth and luxurious, and I'm getting an impressive 44 MPG around town. I've only had it for a week, but I'm already having so much fun driving it. The pickup is great too! I found that the Sonata was the best choice for me after test driving a 2017 Camry Hybrid and a 2017 Honda Accord Hybrid. The price, features, and handling were unbeatable. Overall, I'm extremely satisfied with my purchase!

I really appreciate the sleek looks and body lines of this car, and I've received many compliments on it. The limited with ultimate package offers many features that would cost thousands more from other manufacturers. The vehicle is very quiet, smooth, and comfortable to ride in, making my 40-minute commute much more enjoyable than in my previous 2012 Toyota Prius 4. The Sonata has a lot more room, which is a huge plus. The audio, phone, and GPS controls work well, although they don't always work flawlessly with my iPhone 7. While I don't always like how the car shifts, it's still a great ride overall. After three years of use and at 100K mileage, I had a random misfire on cylinder 3 that was diagnosed as a bad fuel injector. I replaced all the fuel injectors, but the problem persisted. I believe due to the vehicle being GDI, the intake was carboned up and causing the problem. The volume switch on the steering wheel broke and needed to be replaced, and the bottom heat shield just fell off one day. Despite these issues, I still think the Sonata is a great car and would recommend it to others.

Are you in search of a fuel-efficient car to replace your CT200h? We recommend a car that can achieve 40mpg+ in NYC traffic, has a comfortable seat with lumbar support, and a full speed (stop&go) adaptive cruise control. After researching, we found the Toyota Prius Four, Hyundai Sonata Hybrid, 2017 Ford Fusion Hybrid, 2017 Lincoln MKZ Hybrid, and Audi A3 e-tron to be the best options. The Prius is similar to the CT but has a less comfortable seat and unappealing styling. The Ford Fusion has a bumpy ride and outdated interior design, while both the Fusion and MKZ have a nonlinear brake pedal that feels odd. The A3 is very European and comfortable, but the adaptive cruise control is only available on the Prestige trim which is quite expensive. The Sonata may not drive as impressively as the A3, but it is very quiet and has a comfortable ride without being floaty. Ultimately, we recommend the loaded Sonata Ultimate which offers unbeatable value, 40mpg average, a huge sunroof, cooled and heated seats, heated steering and rear seats, Android auto, a much more usable trunk, 10 years warranty with lifetime on battery, and no more CVT drone!

Vehicle year: 2016
For the past 5 years, we have been driving Prius and Prius V, which have been great cars with fantastic mpg. Recently, we were in search of a replacement hybrid and came across Hyundai, which caught our attention due to its positive reviews and features. We were delighted to find a Limited model on sale for $24K, which was a great deal. We were looking for a car that was more comfortable and better at highway speeds, and after considering Accords, Camrys and Fusions, we found that the Hyundai stood out due to its 2016 re-design. It has more room than its competitors and a great trunk, with a large flat deck. The leather seats, lumbar support that can be moved up or down, and position memory make for an outstandingly comfortable ride. The heated and ventilated seats, along with the heated steering wheel, are nice extras. The blind spot monitoring and backup aid are also great features, which let you know if there is a car or someone approaching from the side as you back out of a space. Although we would have liked to have gotten the

We purchased this car with the expectation of achieving a fuel economy of 40mpg, as an upgrade from our previous 23mpg vehicle. However, we have only been able to achieve an average of 30.1mpg, with a maximum of 35mpg. Despite our disappointment, we have learned from this experience and in the future, we will consider all available options before making a purchase. If given the opportunity, we would have opted for the more affordable turbo model. Thank you for your understanding.

We had leased the 2012 Sonata Hybrid and were planning to trade it in and lease a new one when the lease was up in July. Unfortunately, my stepmom passed away unexpectedly on Mother's Day, and we had to drive from Colorado to Missouri for the funeral. We decided to take the Sonata since it was the most reliable vehicle we had and we were well under the mileage allotment on our lease. However, a few days after we arrived, the engine started making a strange noise when we went out for dinner. We immediately parked it and called Hyundai the next morning to have it towed to the nearest dealership, which was Suntrup Hyundai in St. Louis. To our surprise, the engine had blown and we were required to pay for an engine replacement before we could turn it in on the lease. Despite offering maintenance records, Hyundai denied the claim before even reviewing them. After some persistence, we were able to fax the records and provide our mechanic's phone number. Although they did call him, they still denied the claim, citing improper maintenance. We were shocked, as we had taken good care of the vehicle and had even addressed some concerns our mechanic had previously voiced. Unfortunately, we were told we had to pay for a new engine as we had to turn in a running vehicle at the end of the lease. We fought it as long as we could, with multiple people in the Hyundai Corporation, but ultimately, the choice became pay for the engine, buy the car, or ruin our credit. We ended up paying $7,000 for the engine. After spending $790.00 on buying out the lease, I researched my car online and found numerous complaints about the 2012 Sonata Hybrid. It was disheartening to see that this model had the most complaints. As a loyal Hyundai customer for over 20 years, I was disappointed that the company was not taking responsibility for these obvious issues. It would be great if Hyundai could offer a lifetime, transferable warranty instead of just a 100,000 mile warranty, especially since they do not cover defects. I hope that Hyundai takes notice of these complaints and takes action to address them. For anyone considering buying a Sonata Hybrid, I would advise caution and recommend keeping a detailed journal of all maintenance and issues, no matter how minor, and getting all maintenance done at a dealership to increase the chances of getting any defects fixed. I've been driving my Sonata for 100k miles over the past four years and it's been running well until about a year ago. Unfortunately, I've been experiencing some issues such as random hybrid errors, oil light flickers, and problems shifting (ECM). I brought it in for service and they updated the software for drive-ability improvements, which did help, but the problems have not completely gone away. It's sporadic, happening every 500 miles or so (about every 2 weeks), and if I shut the engine off and restart, the issues tend to reset themselves. However, I must admit that the car's reliability has become a concern and I don't feel comfortable having my wife drive it anymore. It's a shame because it's a good fit and comfortable car. I reached out to customer service for assistance, but unfortunately, they were not able to help. I'm just waiting for it to get paid off so I can consider getting something else.

I've had my hybrid Sonata for three months now, and it has just over 2000 miles on it. Unfortunately, it has been in for service twice already, but all the recall fixes have been done. The check engine light keeps coming on, and the dealership has suggested that it might be due to the gas cap not being tightened properly. Additionally, I've noticed that it only gets 18 mpg based on gas tank fill-up. I'm a bit concerned about the engine sputtering out when on curved inclines and when decelerating, as I'm worried about getting rear-ended. Unfortunately, the closest Hyundai service department is 45 minutes away, and they don't offer drop-off service or loaner cars. This means I have to take a day off work or drop the car off the previous evening and pay to rent a car, which is frustrating given that I'm trying to remedy their errors. Overall, I'm disappointed with my experience so far and feel like I may have ended up with a lemon.

Our Sonata Hybrid initially met our expectations, but we were disappointed to find that it did not achieve the advertised mileage. Unfortunately, we encountered a major engine issue this past summer, resulting in the need for a replacement after only three years of ownership. Despite the extended repair time due to parts availability, we were accused of neglecting oil changes, which we know is not true. Hyundai denied warranty coverage, resulting in significant out-of-pocket expenses. It is frustrating to learn that a recall has been issued for the exact same issue we experienced, yet our car is not included. We believe that Hyundai should prioritize customer satisfaction and stand behind their products. Overall, our experience has left us unable to recommend Hyundai to others.
