The Hyundai Ioniq 5 (Korean: 현대 아이오닉 5) is a battery electric compact crossover SUV produced by Hyundai since 2021. It is the first product to be marketed under the electric cars-focused Ioniq sub-brand, and the first model developed on the Hyundai Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP).
Overview
The Ioniq 5 was revealed globally on 23 February 2021. Its design was previewed by the Hyundai 45 EV Concept which was presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2019. Both the concept car and the production version are inspired by the original Hyundai Pony, and features the Parametric Pixel design that is applied to the headlights, tail lights, and wheels. The vehicle's clamshell hood spans the entire width to make a sleek look with the 20-inch aerodynamic wheels. The "45" describes both the 45th anniversary of the Pony coupe and the 45-degree angles prominent on the sides of the concept. At the time, Hyundai called the design language "sensuous sportiness" and described the front and rear lights as carrying a "kinetic cube" theme.
The Ioniq 5 was developed under the project code NE as the first vehicle to be based on the E-GMP platform. The dedicated electric vehicle platform enables the vehicle to adopt a fully flat interior floor with a 3-meter long wheelbase. The flat floor allows Hyundai engineers to develop a sliding front central console marketed as 'Universal Island', which is able to slide backwards by 140 mm (5.5 in). The vehicle has a cargo capacity of 531 L (18.8 cu ft) behind the rear seats that can be increased to nearly 1,600 L (56.5 cu ft) with the second row seats folded. The rear legroom space was achieved by making the front seats approximately 30 percent thinner than typical seats.
The dashboard of the Ioniq 5 is made up of two 12 in (300 mm) screens, one for the instrument cluster display and the other for the infotainment system, both under one piece of glass. It is equipped with an optional head-up display with augmented reality support. Many of the interior parts are made from recycled materials, including PET bottles. The Ioniq 5 can be optioned with a single large glass panel roof without any support beams.
The Ioniq 5 also features a front boot (alternatively called a frunk), which has a 57 L (2.01 cu ft) capacity for the RWD version (except North America), while the AWD model and all North American versions have a 24 L (0.848 cu ft) capacity, due to the extra mechanical components underneath to support the front electric motor. It has the ability to charge electrical equipment through the built-in V2L (Vehicle to Load) function. It can supply up to 3.6 kW of power from the port mounted under the rear seats (except Australia) and from another port installed outside. The exterior port is able to supply power even if the vehicle is turned off.
In some markets, the Ioniq 5 is offered with an optional Digital Side Mirror (DSM) which replaces the conventional side mirrors with cameras and OLED screens.

We had a very brief warning on the dash that it was losing its power; we barely had enough time to pull onto a side street. It lost power so quickly we couldn't position the car properly and it stayed in the middle of the side street until the tow truck came and jumped the 12 volt battery enough to get the car into gear so it could drive up the tow truck ramp. The scary part was that we were only a block away from turning onto busy Highway 522 when it died. Had the car died on the highway we could have been stranded in a very unsafe position. The dealer later diagnosed the problem as a failed ICCU and 12-volt battery and replaced both. We had to rent a car for 3 days.

- Summary: After all the recalls and TBS that Hyundai has performed on this car to prevent any ICCU failures I still had the failure after all the updates. Last week after AC charging to 80% (7.6kw) the car thru an error code to check EV when starting up. It was only yellow so I attempted to drive it. Within 1/4 block the error code was flashing red and a warning was given to pull over and stop. Since I was only a block away I made it back home. The car had to be towed to the local dealer. Upon inspection they retrieved error code P1A9096 that said the ICCU failed. The ICCU fuse was also blown (open). This did not cause a safety issue this time but if I would have been on the road who knows. Also the replacement ICCU appears to be the same part number as removed? I do not believe Hyundai fully understands the issue and software updates have only corrected or is masking some larger issue.

- Summary: On Saturday, [XXX], at approximately [XXX], I drove my 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 north on [XXX] . The car was operating normally. I stopped at the red light at the corner of [XXX] and noticed a large red circle with a "Check electrical system" warning on the driver's display screen. When the traffic light turned green, I pressed the accelerator pedal, and the car did not move. I looked at the "Park, Neutral, Reverse, Drive" shifter. The "P" was lit up, indicating the car was in "Park." I attempted to switch to "Drive," and the status indicator remained in "P." I then pushed the "EV START STOP" switch to see if I could cycle the vehicle off and then back on to clear the problem. The switch had no effect. [XXX] is a busy four-lane, undivided street near the University of Colorado at Boulder campus. I selected the hazard flashers and called 911 to alert the Boulder Police Department that I was in a car that was immobilized in the middle of the right-hand northbound lane. Cars had to swerve to avoid me. The Police Department dispatched a vehicle that arrived 10 minutes later, pulled up behind me, and put its flashing lights on to alert traffic. While waiting for the tow truck, I received another alert on the driver's display that informed me that the 12-volt battery was nearly completely discharged, and I had 10 minutes of power left. The warning counted the remaining minutes to 0, and the displays shut down. From the first warning message to the shutdown, I could not turn the car system off or shift the car out of the park. The tow company had to put dollies under the rear wheels of the Ioniq 5 and lift the front end off the ground to tow the vehicle, as all four wheels were locked. The car was towed to Crossroads Hyundai in Loveland, Colorado. It had just been serviced to address all the recall issues, including the ICCU software update. Based on updated software the car reacts by turning off the charging, but I am concerned it may not always do that and the connector would overheat and fail. - Summary: I was driving 75mph on the freeway and I heard a pop and then the electrical warning system on the car lit up. I lost power to the car and was only able to accelerate minimally. There was a warning of low battery and the vehicle was going to lose power. I turned on my hazard lights and was able to get to the exit and was able to exit the freeway safely. Once the vehicle lost power I was unable to open the charger door, start the vehicle, use any of the key fob functions and had to jump the 12V battery, only to die immediately after. There is no pre-warning to this happening, it just shows the alert and the car loses all power. There are also problems with the vehicle after being plugged in to charge and it says "Charging Unsuccessful", or stops charging after a short period of time. It also will not charge to full capacity at home or the charging station. I receive no warning lights or messages about why the charge is not working. It took weeks to get the vehicle into the dealer, making it extremely unsafe to drive and the error has almost caused a major crash. My vehicle has been at the dealer and has not been diagnosed with any issues yet. The dealer has provided me with a rental vehicle...in which now I'm paying for gas. Reading through these other comments...who knows how long it will be to get my vehicle back, yet I'm still making my payments...this isn't

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5.

- Summary: Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2022-2024 IONIQ 5, 2023-2024 IONIQ 6, Genesis GV60, Genesis GV70 "Electrified," and Genesis GV80 "Electrified" vehicles. The Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU) may become damaged and stop charging the 12-Volt battery, which can result in a loss of drive power.
- Consequence: A loss of drive power increases the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Dealers will inspect and replace the ICCU and its fuse, as necessary. In addition, dealers will update the ICCU software. All repairs will be performed free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed April 22, 2024. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 257/021G.

- Summary: Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2022 Ioniq 5 vehicles. A software error in the Shifter Control Unit (SCU) may disengage the parking mechanism, which can allow the vehicle to rollaway.
- Consequence: Vehicle rollaway can increase the risk of a crash or injury.
- Remedy: Drivers are recommended to use the Electronic Parking Brake (EPB) when parking their vehicles until the remedy has been performed. Dealers will update the Shifter Control Unit software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 14, 2022. Owners may contact Hyundai customer service at 1-855-371-9460. Hyundai's number for this recall is 228.

I recently switched from a Hyundai Nexo fuel cell electric SUV to an Ioniq 5 and I have to say, I am thoroughly impressed. The Ioniq 5 has received high praise and great reviews, and for good reason. It's a crossover, which means it's lower than an SUV but higher than a sedan, making it the perfect height. The design is unique and eye-catching, and the high-end features and design elements inside and out make it feel very luxurious. The ride is smooth and quiet, with zero wind noise or rattles anywhere. The suspension soaks up the rough Los Angeles roads and freeways with ease, making for a responsive and perfect ride feel balance for handling. The power is more than enough, and it can out jump and blow by just about anyone if that's your thing. Overall, I have zero buyers remorse on this car and it's definitely my favorite lifetime car. Hyundai really went all out on this vehicle and it shows. I highly recommend it!Not mine, but once in a while, it's awesome to jump away to change lanes or get out of the way from a dumb driver who does something stupid. It's a great safety feature in my book, and it's fun too! The inside comfort and seats are excellent - not too soft and not too firm. The side bolsters are perfect for my 215-pound, 6'2 frame. Some cars are too extreme, pushing on my sides, but these are great. The legroom is excellent, as is the seating position adjustments. The visibility is excellent, and the camera quality and HD display quality are as good as it gets. My wife commented on how 'nice' and simply classy with a sense of style the interior is. She noticed and likes the color accented details of stitching on seats and trim. Me too. It all really works and shows a massive amount of attention to detail. The tech in the car may be overwhelming for some, but for me, it is all very welcome. Most of the defaults are where I want them with the tech on, but you can turn things off and even customize everything for two different drivers. Brilliant! The tech really works fantastically, and the abundance of safety features has you covered like no other. If you get in an accident in this car, no way it should be your fault with all the alerts and auto steer and braking avoidance happening for so many types of incidents. The Highway driving assist 2 works quite well and also has customization. Yes, the car can ping pong a bit on certain roads depending on things, but it works and feels safe. And yes, you need to at least lightly keep your hands on the wheel, or it will start binging at you. Also, I love the slightly squared-off bottom of the steering wheel. It gives you a little better 'slide-in' room and really feels great and comfortable in hand. No issues. The control buttons are mostly all haptic but work well, and the system is blazingly fast at everything it does with no delays. Even the start-up is really fast. Also, extra buttons are customizable for many different uses.The I-pedal driving mode is perfectly calibrated and provides a true one-pedal driving experience. The pedal feel is ideal for both acceleration and braking, and the four different Regen modes are not only adjustable but also remember your last setting. It would be great if the I-pedal mode could be a default memory option for drivers who prefer it. The auto hold parking feature is also now on memory, which is excellent. The audio system is Bose and better than the previous Bose system, but not as good as the one in the Nexo. It has many adjustments, and you may need to increase treble, mids, and lows to get better sound. Charging and its many options are all great, and the interface with the Hyundai BlueLink app on the phone works perfectly. I hope they add more features to it. While there are a few things that could be improved, they are not deal breakers. Some people complain about the lack of a rear windshield wiper, but the angle on the rear window is no different from many sedans that don't have wipers. RainX can help the water bead away, but a wiper would be nice, especially if you live in a rainy/snowy or wintery area. I'm sure that with all the outcry, they will update next year's model with either a digital camera rearview mirror or a wiper. The lower door sills seem to stick out more than other cars, but this is because the car is wide. When getting in or out, your leg may rub the door sill unless you swing out wide.I'm getting used to it after a while and it's not a problem. If your car is dirty and you brush up against it, you may get some dirt on your pants. Turning on the seat heaters and ventilation is only possible through the touch display. Although it says there is an 'auto' option to turn them on, I can't seem to get it to work. It would be great if we could set a default temperature and assign the on/off function to one of the three blank user-selectable option buttons on the steering wheel or control console. The climate control works well, but so far, I have not been able to get the auto mode to kick in to high fan speed when the car is hot inside. You have to do it manually from the haptic button on the console. And yes, I do have the system set to normal and not eco, so it should go to a higher speed when in auto mode if the car is hot. My Nexo did this. The charger port door does not open when you touch it, so I'm guessing it is broken, but that is the only thing that seems broken so far on the car. (Voice control and key fob do open it, so you have options.) The navigation system is the 'regular' one for Hyundai. My Nexo used the premium Nav software, which is considerably better. It would be great if the Nav software could be upgraded! Fast charging is for real and is a game-changer for anxiety. I have superfast 350kwh chargers near me that so far seem open. Free 30-minute charges are great as they basically fill you up. The range is as advertised or greater, which is nice. The space in the car is amazing. It feels open, and with the seats folded, I actually have more room than my Nexo. Can you tell I like it? Congratulations and thank you, Hyundai!

Upon arrival, I noticed that the 5 looks even better in person than in photos. Although the hood protrudes a bit, the car still looks sleek and stylish. The interior is spacious and comfortable, especially the front seats. However, some surfaces could be improved for the price point. The rear cargo space and access are impressive, and the slightly taller stance with tall tire/wheels is perfect for winter and slight off-road capabilities. The 'Z' side-sculps are neither interesting nor repulsive, and the long inner door grab handles are a nice touch. While the exterior flippable door handles seem fragile, the rear doors require a significant slam to fully close. I hope that the Limited iteration boasts nicer interior touches and at least an electronic hatch closure, which is missing on the SE, making it difficult for shorter individuals to close. If the delta to the upcoming GV60 is less than +10-15%, then despite a more conventional exterior, it may be a much more compelling semi-luxurious choice. Overall, the 5 SE is a great car for its price point.

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share my experience with the Ioniq 5 limited that I purchased last Thursday, 3/24. Unfortunately, I have encountered an issue while driving between 60-70 mph where the steering wheel shakes excessively. I brought it into the dealer on Monday 3/28 and it has been there for 5 days and counting. Although this has been a disappointing experience, I am confident that the dealer will resolve the issue soon. I would recommend test driving the car multiple times at highway speeds before making a purchase. Thank you for your time and attention.

Car has 30k miles on it, I had it parked at work turned it on and the console said 12v battery is weak, then the car just died. Could not turn it on no matter what I did. Called the dealer and he said it needs to be towed. I read reviews and lot of people have had this issue where the 12v dies without warning and so does the car. Second issue is the battery/car driving range in winter. I am barely getting 150 miles while I was getting 250 miles in summer on a full charge.
