Hyundai Ioniq 5 problems
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 (Korean: 현대 아이오닉 5) is a battery electric compact crossover SUV produced by Hyundai since 2021. It is the first product to be marketed under the electric cars-focused Ioniq sub-brand, and the first model developed on the Hyundai Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP).
Overview
The Ioniq 5 was revealed globally on 23 February 2021. Its design was previewed by the Hyundai 45 EV Concept which was presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2019. Both the concept car and the production version are inspired by the original Hyundai Pony, and features the Parametric Pixel design that is applied to the headlights, tail lights, and wheels. The vehicle's clamshell hood spans the entire width to make a sleek look with the 20-inch aerodynamic wheels. The "45" describes both the 45th anniversary of the Pony coupe and the 45-degree angles prominent on the sides of the concept. At the time, Hyundai called the design language "sensuous sportiness" and described the front and rear lights as carrying a "kinetic cube" theme.
The Ioniq 5 was developed under the project code NE as the first vehicle to be based on the E-GMP platform. The dedicated electric vehicle platform enables the vehicle to adopt a fully flat interior floor with a 3-meter long wheelbase. The flat floor allows Hyundai engineers to develop a sliding front central console marketed as 'Universal Island', which is able to slide backwards by 140 mm (5.5 in). The vehicle has a cargo capacity of 531 L (18.8 cu ft) behind the rear seats that can be increased to nearly 1,600 L (56.5 cu ft) with the second row seats folded. The rear legroom space was achieved by making the front seats approximately 30 percent thinner than typical seats.
The dashboard of the Ioniq 5 is made up of two 12 in (300 mm) screens, one for the instrument cluster display and the other for the infotainment system, both under one piece of glass. It is equipped with an optional head-up display with augmented reality support. Many of the interior parts are made from recycled materials, including PET bottles. The Ioniq 5 can be optioned with a single large glass panel roof without any support beams.
The Ioniq 5 also features a front boot (alternatively called a frunk), which has a 57 L (2.01 cu ft) capacity for the RWD version (except North America), while the AWD model and all North American versions have a 24 L (0.848 cu ft) capacity, due to the extra mechanical components underneath to support the front electric motor. It has the ability to charge electrical equipment through the built-in V2L (Vehicle to Load) function. It can supply up to 3.6 kW of power from the port mounted under the rear seats (except Australia) and from another port installed outside. The exterior port is able to supply power even if the vehicle is turned off.
In some markets, the Ioniq 5 is offered with an optional Digital Side Mirror (DSM) which replaces the conventional side mirrors with cameras and OLED screens.

Common Hyundai Ioniq 5 problems
The Hyundai Ioniq 5, an electric SUV, has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners in the United States. One major issue is a partial or complete loss of propulsive power, which has raised safety concerns. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has received 30 complaints about this problem in 2022 models, estimating that around 39,500 vehicles on U.S. highways were affected.
Another issue reported by owners is the 12-volt battery dying when the car is parked, particularly when the traction battery charge is low. This problem has been reported by numerous Ioniq 5 owners, but Hyundai has not yet acknowledged or issued a recall for it. The issue seems to be worse if the car is parked with less than about 20% remaining traction battery charge.
Additionally, some owners have reported issues with the EV charging system. These issues include the car tripping the circuit breaker while charging, not charging anywhere from that point forward, and not fully charging. These problems have led to long periods of time spent at dealerships for diagnosis and parts replacement.
Lastly, there have been complaints about the EV battery, with some owners reporting that the car will never have battery warming or pre-conditioning, even though it said it did have it. This can lead to slow charging speeds in cold weather, causing dissatisfaction among owners.
In summary, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 has several common problems reported by owners, including a partial or complete loss of propulsive power, a 12-volt battery that dies when the car is parked, issues with the EV charging system, and problems with the EV battery. Hyundai has stated that it is cooperating with investigations and launching service campaigns to address these issues, but many owners are still experiencing problems.

What is the production problem with Hyundai IONIQ 5?
According to reports, South Korea's Hyundai Motor's IONIQ 5 model may face a period of suspension of production because the world's largest automotive semiconductor company, Germany's Infineon, which supplies power module chips (IGBTs) to it, has recently produced a large number of substandard products.
How long do Hyundai IONIQ 5 batteries last?
Though no exact figures are provided, Hyundai's warranty terms state that the Ioniq 5 battery will last for eight years or 160,000km and guarantee the battery against any deterioration that would cause the vehicle to lose more than 30% of its capacity.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-24
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-27
- VIN: KM8KMDAF3PU
- Components: LANE DEPARTURE
- Summary: Vehicle disengaged lane keeping ADAS without warning multiple times. Sometimes a warning beep would occur, but often on turns it would suddenly disengage without a beep or any other warning method causing me to have to yank the wheel to complete the turn correctly and avoid running off the road. This has caused me to not trust the system and fight the lane keeping feature just in case it suddenly turns off and goes into the other lane before I have a chance to correct the steering.

- Date Complaint: 2024-10-23
- VIN: KM8KM4AE3NU
- Components: EQUIPMENT
- Summary: At around 9pm, while charging my vehicle, I heard a loud boom and the power went out. It appears there was some sort of malfunction with the charger that has tripped/blown the circuit. I have not had an electrician come out yet, but after a quick google search it became apparent that others have experienced the same issue and I thought it was important to report. My charger is outside, not in a garage or enclosed space, so there was no fire that I am aware of.

- Summary: Car will randomly start giving warning messages (while driving or parked). Messages include pull over and check brake system, lane departure system failure, check battery, the speedometer will read 0 while driving, among multiple others. Dealership has ' fixed' multiple times, replacing fuses, bumper, sensors, but the problem keeps happening

- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-09
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-22
- VIN: KM8KR4AE0PU
- Components: TIRES
- Summary: There seems to be a wide spread issue with the foam on the interior of Ionic 5 tires, Michelin 235/55/R 19. The foam dislodges from the interior of the tire and causes severe vibrations when driving at over 60 mph. The issue causes the tires to be unbalanced and can cause damage to the car. Wondering why Michelin doesn't address this issue and issue a fix other than stripping the tires of foam. My Hyundai dealer told me this is an on going issue and they have received no guidance from Michelin or Hyundai.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-22
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-18
- VIN: KM8KRDAFXNU
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: While we were driving the Ioniq recently when it suddenly lost all power. We had a very brief warning on the dash that it was losing its power; we barely had enough time to pull onto a side street. It lost power so quickly we couldn't position the car properly and it stayed in the middle of the side street until the tow truck came and jumped the 12 volt battery enough to get the car into gear so it could drive up the tow truck ramp. The scary part was that we were only a block away from turning onto busy Highway 522 when it died. Had the car died on the highway we could have been stranded in a very unsafe position. The dealer later diagnosed the problem as a failed ICCU and 12-volt battery and replaced both. We had to rent a car for 3 days.

The vehicle was towed to the dealer. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The approximate failure mileage was 6,500. The VIN was not available.

- Summary: Car on 2 separate occasions once parked the other while in motion discharged unexpectedly and would not start. I was later notified by a contracted service station that the 12V battery is discharging and needs to be replaced or serviced by dealer. These events only started happening after a recent recall update was done to the vehicle for battery management. Warning signs on the vehicle said 12v voltage low stop safely.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-09
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-11
- VIN: KM8KRDAF5PU
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: During normal driving with car charged to 95%, I heard a pop coming from the rear of the vehicle and saw an immediate warning about electrical system malfunction. I drove the car for less than a quarter mile and pulled over. I then received instruction on the dash to power off the car which I did. The car was towed to the dealership who diagnosed an ICCU failure. It had been to the dealer twice for safety recall notices related to the same issue. This is a known problem with this type of vehicle. Awaiting replacement parts. This problem will cause complete loss of power to the vehicle. Fortunately I was able to pull over and park in a safe space before this happened. Obviously complete loss of power is a potential safety issue, thankfully systems alerted me to the problem. I have no idea if the replacement part will be of the same lot that failed in the first place.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-24
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-07
- VIN: KM8KN4DE1RU
- Components: LANE DEPARTURE
- Summary: When on a highway with lane-keeping assist engaged, the car sometimes steers into the left-hand lane. It seems to happen most often when the road bends to the right. The car straddles the lane divider into the fast lane to the left. This occurs in otherwise perfect conditions: sunny, dry days on roads with clear white stripes demarking the lanes. I must fight with it to get it back in the proper lane. This is very dangerous. I'm convinced it will cause a high-speed crash. Another driver I spoke with said she had seen the same problem and wouldn't use the lane guidance because of it. I'm extremely cautious when I use it now. The problem has happened multiple times.
Hyundai Ioniq 5 2022
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-24
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-02
- VIN: KM8KMDAF6NU
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: After all the recalls and TBS that Hyundai has performed on this car to prevent any ICCU failures I still had the failure after all the updates. Last week after AC charging to 80% (7.6kw) the car thru an error code to check EV when starting up. It was only yellow so I attempted to drive it. Within 1/4 block the error code was flashing red and a warning was given to pull over and stop. Since I was only a block away I made it back home. The car had to be towed to the local dealer. Upon inspection they retrieved error code P1A9096 that said the ICCU failed. The ICCU fuse was also blown (open). This did not cause a safety issue this time but if I would have been on the road who knows. Also the replacement ICCU appears to be the same part number as removed? I do not believe Hyundai fully understands the issue and software updates have only corrected or is masking some larger issue.

- Summary: When approaching 60 mph the vehicle starts to vibrate / shake. Upon a dealer's recommendation they have rotated, aligned, balanced and changed the tires and repaired the rear rims, but they did not help. (Just cost us money). I contacted Hyundai and they suggested that I go to another dealer, which I did. They said it was a known issue and the there is nothing they can do about it. I can't say much about the safety aspect, but I'm sure it's not good when a car vibrates and no on seems to know why ...

- Summary: On Saturday, [XXX], at approximately [XXX], I drove my 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5 north on [XXX] . The car was operating normally. I stopped at the red light at the corner of [XXX] and noticed a large red circle with a "Check electrical system" warning on the driver's display screen. When the traffic light turned green, I pressed the accelerator pedal, and the car did not move. I looked at the "Park, Neutral, Reverse, Drive" shifter. The "P" was lit up, indicating the car was in "Park." I attempted to switch to "Drive," and the status indicator remained in "P." I then pushed the "EV START STOP" switch to see if I could cycle the vehicle off and then back on to clear the problem. The switch had no effect. [XXX] is a busy four-lane, undivided street near the University of Colorado at Boulder campus. I selected the hazard flashers and called 911 to alert the Boulder Police Department that I was in a car that was immobilized in the middle of the right-hand northbound lane. Cars had to swerve to avoid me. The Police Department dispatched a vehicle that arrived 10 minutes later, pulled up behind me, and put its flashing lights on to alert traffic. While waiting for the tow truck, I received another alert on the driver's display that informed me that the 12-volt battery was nearly completely discharged, and I had 10 minutes of power left. The warning counted the remaining minutes to 0, and the displays shut down. From the first warning message to the shutdown, I could not turn the car system off or shift the car out of the park. The tow company had to put dollies under the rear wheels of the Ioniq 5 and lift the front end off the ground to tow the vehicle, as all four wheels were locked. The car was towed to Crossroads Hyundai in Loveland, Colorado. It had just been serviced to address all the recall issues, including the ICCU software update. The car has approximately 16,000 miles on it. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

- Summary: It is regularly very difficult to see the digital speedometer on this car because it is blocked by the steering wheel. There is almost no comfortable position to place the seat and steering wheel for someone of my height 6ft where the speedometer is visible. Please make Hyundai move the speedometer to the middle of the screen (not outside edges where it is blocked by the steering wheel)!! I have contacted them and they have essentially gaslit/ignored me about this.

- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Our all-electric AWD Hyundai Ioniq 5 has an issue where the rear motor electric oil pump (EOP) overheats and ceases to function when the problem occurs, which disables the rear motor and effectively causes the car to become a front-wheel drive vehicle with a "hesitation" in the acceleration. This problem only occurs after a long time of high-speed driving and typically on a warm day (upwards of 70-80 degrees F). When the problem occurs, the rear motor ceases to function at all and only the front motor operates to power the vehicle forward. The acceleration is also impacted, such that when the accelerator is pushed, the car "hesitates" for 1-3 seconds before the front motor takes over the demand for power and "lurches" the car forward in a jerky motion. The symptom will last as long as the car is in an overheated state. However, if you pull the car over and let it rest for a period of time (undetermined), the rear motor will again operate normally until it overheats again. For us, this occurred once on a very hot day traveling approximately 50-60 miles on interstate travelling at speeds over 70 MPH. On another occurrence, it happened after driving the car about 200 miles (stopping for a lunch break in the middle), for about 4 hours. When this problem occurs in other cars equipped with RWD only, they lose all forward power in the car and coast to a stop even when the battery still has a charge. We've taken it to our local dealership for repair on Sept 12, 2024 (McGee Hyundai of Barre, VT) and they claim that there is nothing wrong with the vehicle. After researching the topic, I've determined it is the failing rear EOP must be replaced [XXX] and [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

The car is great! It's so much fun to learn about all the technology that makes this car an adventure in high tech. Once I set up the charger in my garage, I'll be even happier. Unfortunately, the public charging situation doesn't work for me. It takes too long and I don't want to hunt for open spots. But overall, the car is really nice.

Everything works great! The handling and steering are tight and responsive. It'll definitely set you back in your seat in sport mode! I mostly drive it in eco mode and once I finally settled on my preferred settings from the myriad options it has available, it's a very quiet and comfortable ride. This is the nicest car I've ever owned!

The car drives great and has excellent features. However, there are a few notable downsides to consider. Firstly, it lacks wireless Apple CarPlay. Secondly, the interior lighting falls short, especially in the center console area. Thirdly, it lacks adaptive/dynamic headlights. Fourthly, the Bose stereo sound is not that great. Finally, it does not have a rear windshield wiper. If these things were added, it would be perfect actually.

I've had the Ioniq 5 for a week now and I absolutely love it! I went for the SEL AWD as it was a great balance of features and price. If you're after all the bells and whistles, the Limited may be more up your street, but there's plenty to like here. I bought the car in the middle of winter, so the range is somewhat limited by that. In cold weather at a 90% charge, I'll get just over 200 miles. However, this should improve significantly in warmer weather and it should get up to 260 at a full charge. I also love the fast charging and all the high-tech driving features. It has so much power, speed and handling that you'll confidently zip around in traffic and the safety features will help you feel more secure. The infotainment system is good and has wired Android Auto or CarPlay for phone integration. My only complaint is that they stripped down some features from the 2023 model, but they aren't big things you'll miss much. I got a great deal on a lease with incentives and trade-in, so I'm really happy with my monthly payment and may well end up purchasing at the end of my lease!

If you're looking for an affordable electric car, I highly recommend the Hyundai IONIQ 5. I test drove several options, including electric BMWs, Mercedes, and Audis, but ultimately found the IONIQ 5 to be the best choice for me. Plus, it's available at half the price of those other models! Don't hesitate to check it out.

I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to share my experience with the Ioniq 5 limited that I purchased last Thursday, 3/24. Unfortunately, I have encountered an issue while driving between 60-70 mph where the steering wheel shakes excessively. I brought it into the dealer on Monday 3/28 and it has been there for 5 days and counting. Although this has been a disappointing experience, I am confident that the dealer will resolve the issue soon. I would recommend test driving the car multiple times at highway speeds before making a purchase. Thank you for your time and attention.

Car has 30k miles on it, I had it parked at work turned it on and the console said 12v battery is weak, then the car just died. Could not turn it on no matter what I did. Called the dealer and he said it needs to be towed. I read reviews and lot of people have had this issue where the 12v dies without warning and so does the car. Second issue is the battery/car driving range in winter. I am barely getting 150 miles while I was getting 250 miles in summer on a full charge.

I brought it into the dealer on Monday 3/28 and it has been there for 5 days and counting. Although this has been a disappointing experience, I am confident that the dealer will resolve the issue soon. I would recommend test driving the car multiple times at highway speeds before making a purchase. Thank you for your time.

This EV model may not be to everyone's taste, but it offers great value for money. However, if you are looking for a more luxurious option, a Mercedes Benz EV may be a better fit for you. It's important to consider your personal preferences and priorities when making a purchase decision.
