2017 Audi A6 problems
The Audi A6 is an executive car made by the German company Audi since 1994. Now in its fifth generation, the successor to the Audi 100 is manufactured in Neckarsulm, Germany, and is available in saloon and estate configurations, the latter marketed by Audi as the Avant. Audi's internal numbering treats the A6 as a continuation of the Audi 100 lineage, with the initial A6 designated as a member of the C4-series, followed by the C5, C6, C7, and the C8. The related Audi A7 is essentially a Sportback (liftback) version of the C7-series and C8-series A6 but is marketed under its own separate identity and model designation.
All generations of the A6 have offered either front-wheel-drive or Torsen-based four-wheel-drive, marketed by Audi as their quattro system. The A6 has also been used as the basis for the company's Allroad models since 1999.
Both petrol and diesel versions of the A6 are offered. The wide range of engines available have power outputs ranging from 150 to 333 PS (110 to 245 kW). These are inline four-cylinder turbocharged engines and more powerful 3-litre units in a V6 configuration with a mechanical compressor.

Common 2017 Audi A6 problems
The Audi A6 2017 is a luxury sedan that has been praised for its performance and quality, but like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems reported by owners. Here are some of the most common issues with the Audi A6 2017:
- Auxiliary Heater Element: The air conditioning system of some A6s made between 8 July 2014 and 31 October 2014 may have a faulty auxiliary heater element that could fail. If your car falls within this range, contact your local Audi dealer for further information and to find out if your car is affected by this recall.
- Towing Bracket: If your A6 is fitted with a hinged tow bar and was built between 2 December 2015 and 17 December 2018, the locking mechanism could be faulty. Book your car into an Audi dealer to have the tow bar inspected; a bracket may need to be replaced.
- Panoramic Glass Sunroof: A small number of cars that were constructed between 16 July 2018 and 10 October 2018 and were fitted with a panoramic glass roof could have an issue with the bonding agent used to keep the glass panels in place. Find out from your local Audi dealer if your A6 is affected; it will need to have the panels stuck down again to solve the problem.
- Fuel Leak: There have been two recalls issued for the A6 that concern fuel leaks. The first is for cars made from 1 April 2011 to 30 April 2012, the second is for A6s made between 18 February 2014 and 2 September 2016. Find out from your local dealer if your car is affected.
- Coolant Pump: Particles in the engine coolant could end up blocking the pump and lead to it overheating. This applies to vehicles made between 1 May 2011 and 31 October 2016. Contact your Audi dealer because affected cars will need to have the coolant system checked, and any damaged parts replaced.
- Reduction in Braking Performance: On A6s made from 1 January 2012 to 27 August 2014, an issue with the diaphragm in the brake servo rupturing could result in a reduction in braking performance. Any Audi dealer will be able to let you know if your example is affected and will rectify the fault for you.
These are some of the most common problems reported by Audi A6 2017 owners. It's essential to keep up with regular maintenance and check for any recalls or issues that may affect your vehicle. If you're considering purchasing a used Audi A6 2017, it's crucial to have a mechanic inspect the vehicle before purchasing and be aware of these common problems.

ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-01
- VIN: WAUG8AFC9HN
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Engine mounts failed. They are fluid damped and the seals failed and leaked and now the motor is sitting loose in a metal on metal condition with the mounts collapsed. Additionally the manifold and timing chain cover leaks. Additionally the water pump failed. This is all on a car with <75k miles. Problems have been noted by mechanics including Audi dealership. No warning lamps except during pump failure causing engine to over heat
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-01-15
- VIN: WAUH2AFC8HN
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: There is an issue with the power steering control module that causes a lot of error codes to populate. Many of the codes are generic and hard to diagnose, even with Audi certified diagnostic equipment/tools. When this code initially presented, ~9 months ago, there was a red steering wheel light on the dash. I found a company that repairs these modules with these specific codes (I’d imagine good business since this is a common issue); while I got power steering to work, there are codes that still recommend full replacement of the power steering module (Audi certified diagnostic equipment). This error in the module causes complete loss of power steering, with serious risk to safety of all passengers and other drivers, on and off the road. Because this module may communicate with other modules and systems, it may render other codes and faults with the abs and start/stop systems for example. I’ve taken this issue to an Audi dealer and they say I have to pay out of pocket for a whole replacement of the module and rack&pinion. I understand how to maintain a vehicle but this is a known issue for many other models/trims and years. I’ve read some reports that Audi had de-escalated this issue in other models (2012-2016) to avoid a larger number of vehicles being affected. While my vehicle is 2017, it’s out of the “covered recall” but I’m experiencing similar issues to the very same issue. PS. My car has been sitting for 9 months due to this issue.
LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-08
- VIN: WAUH2AFC4HN
- Components: LANE DEPARTURE
- Summary: Passengers side blind spot warning system is intermittent working. Vehicle fails to register tractor trailer and cars on a random basis. Dealer states no codes, however it won’t show codes or an issue if it isn’t aware there is a vehicle present. Offered video proof of sensor not working properly, dealer still refused to repair.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-08-18
- VIN: WAUF8AFC5HN
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: Air bags deployed
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-03-11
- VIN: WAUG8AFC6HN
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: The steering rack for my 2017 Audi A6 2.0T Premium Plus Quattro has failed at roughly 54000 miles. This is the same exact OEM part (OEM Part # 4G1423055EA) that is used in the 2016 A6, which has an extended warranty from Audi due to a lawsuit of 10 years and 125000 miles. My VIN is not included in this extended warranty even though the 2017 Audi A6 and 2016 Audi A6 are the same engines, use the same OEM steering rack parts, and are the same vehicle outside of minor exterior updates in the facelift model (2017). This part has failed and now I'm being charged $6323.77 by the Audi dealership to fix this issue. I am sure this is simply the same issue as it is the same exact part in the same engine. This extended warranty must include all future Audi vehicles that use the same steering rack that is problematic and was given an extended warranty to cover the replacement.
STEERING,LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-02-04
- VIN: WAUF2AFC1HN
- Components: STEERING,LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: While driving my family on a major Interstate, a myriad of warning ️ lights appeared on my dash panel and my vehicle’s steering literally locked! I have had no previous warning lights or issues with this vehicle since it was purchased. This near fatal incident happened as a 18-wheeler was seeking to merge onto the Interstate and I couldn’t change lanes to allow the oncoming traffic to merge. This malfunction/failure caused me and my family to narrowly miss being fatally crushed by the merging 18-wheeler. After bringing the vehicle to a stop in a safe area off of the Interstate and locating the vehicle owner’s manual, I learned that the Electromechanical Steering Unit failed on my 2017 AUDI A6 (Mfg 6/16). Because all of the local AUDI dealerships were closed, I had to call and have the vehicle towed to my home. Upon further researching the issue in various AUDI forums, I realized this system failure was widely experienced by AUDI owners and that it may have even played a part in prompting AUDI to issue “Electromechanical Steering Unit Extended Warranty” letters to certain AUDI 2011-2016 vehicle owners (A6 owners included). I believe NHTSA should do its due diligence in seeking to reduce highway safety fatalities on our nations highways caused by vehicle safety defects/malfunctions by auto manufacturers and execute a mandate for AUDI to (1) issue a SAFETY RECALL for this issue, OR (2) extend the Electromechanical Steering Unit Warranty to include later model year vehicles. It appears that AUDI has not corrected the known issue on their own; thereby warranting NHTSAs regulatory intervention. I would like NHTSA to launch a defects/safety investigation to determine how many more AUDI owners are at risk of experiencing this life-threatening, correctable, and known issue. Please keep me informed on the results of my report.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-06-30
- VIN: WAUD8AFC1HN
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: Had the car parked in the driveway for about a week and half. When turned it on for the first time after that period, noticed the airbag light in the odometer panel continue to be on. Checked for any airbag recalls but found none. Although no airbag recalls have been placed on this particular vehicle so far; I found an online source which states that vehicle of this year, make and model may be affected with airbag issues. Since this could be of a major safety concern, Please check and advise on how to go about this.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-06-09
- VIN: WAUG8AFC0HN
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Car overheat. Engine light on. pulled over and then drove directly to local dealer 10min away who noted engine temp control actuator faulty- stuck. Needed to replace thermostat. Dealer noted problem was noted in earlier year Audi A6 models as well but thought 2017 year did not have similar. Could not leave/drive away from dealership since they noted too dangerous with faulty thermostat/coolant/heating etc. Hoping others are not experiencing similar danger/risks…

STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-09-24
- VIN: WAUH2AFC9HN
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: My 2017 Audi A6 has approximately 50,000 miles on it. I am diligent about obtaining regular maintenance on my vehicle and visited the Audi dealership in Memphis, TN for a 50,000 mile inspection and service in June of 2021. Last week, just 3 months after my 50,000 mile services/inspection, my vehicle stopped operating correctly when making a turn from stopped at a stop sign and lost all power steering. I was informed by the Audi dealership in North Miami, FL (where I am now located), that the steering rack on the vehicle is faulty. The vehicle and this component are still located at the Audi dealership in North Miami while they wait for the part to come in. I can coordinate to make it available for inspection if you would like. I am concerned that this part failed after only 50,000 miles and am particularly concerned that this poses a major safety issue. I was lucky that I was at a near stop and able to make it to safety when this component failed. Had the power steering gone out at any other time, for example, while I was in the middle of an intersection or while driving on a busy roadway, it could have resulted in a major incident. I did not have any warning signs that the power steering was about to shut down, and as mentioned, I had the vehicle inspected just 3 months earlier without any issues. It is also worth noting that Audi had a known issue with the steering rack in the 2012-2016 model years for my vehicle and offered to reimburse owners of those vehicles and warranty the steering rack to 125,000 miles. Audi has indicated to me that the steering rack in my vehicle is the same part as that used in 2016.

This car is the best car I have ever owned. It has great everything! However, there is one tiny irksome feature - the stop-start feature is enabled when you start the car and you have to turn it off every time. Personally, I do not care for it because sometimes it causes a hard stop/stop jerk.
-
I absolutely love this car! It's the perfect size for a luxury car and the interior feels upscale with high-quality materials. The 3.0T engine is very smooth and has a good amount of pep. Although I haven't driven the 2.0T, I have to think it would feel somewhat underpowered, as this is a heavy car. The Quattro AWD is very capable and it handles better than a luxury car should. The doors have a solid, heavy feel, and even the interior and exterior lighting looks upscale. In my opinion, the A6 is the best looking mid-sized luxury car in the class. However, the MMI (multimedia interface) is a bit of a letdown. It's not very user-friendly and many basic controls are either missing or hidden within multiple menus. The in-car phone control is clunky and awkward, making it faster and easier to use the controls right on the phone (which is unsafe and in most states illegal). The steering wheel controls can only control about 50% of what they should. The one thing the system makes it really easy to do is overwrite a radio station memory slot, which means it happens probably 3 times a week by accident. Despite these issues, the car itself is so great that I'll put up with the MMI's shortcomings.and still give it 4 stars!
-
I have only had this car for a month but I am still in love with it. The interior cabin is loaded and rides extremely smooth. Although the initial acceleration is a little sputtery, I believe it is due to the emission auto off feature that comes standard. The MMI system is easy and simple to use, and I love the heads up display options and how easily you can change them.
-
I looked at a lot of options, including the new redesigned E Class. This car had all the options I wanted, a comfortable ride, and a sporty feel. It's a great daily driver and a great road trip car. The interior is whisper quiet. The only feature I would have liked is remote start, but unfortunately, Audi doesn't support that in any of its lineup. However, this was a reasonable tradeoff for all the other features and benefits of this car. Overall, it's an outstanding choice!
-
Hey there! That's a really nice car you have!

The highway can be quite noisy and the ride can be harsh.

Hello! I noticed a few things about this car coming from a 5-series BMW. The gas mileage for a 2 liter engine is not great, I'm getting about 12 mpg in traffic even with conservative driving habits. The navigation system is okay, but it could use some improvement such as street routing and traffic display for local streets that I rely on for my daily commute. The engine vibration can be a bit annoying in stop and go traffic, but it's not a deal breaker. The controls may not be as intuitive as I would like, but that could just be personal preference.
Joany Walker 2024-09-22
I have two major issues with the A6. Firstly, the stop-start feature of the engine can be extremely annoying each time you stop the car for a traffic light, stop sign, heavy traffic, etc. Although you can turn off the feature, it can be easy to forget. Even with the feature turned off, you can still feel the engine thinking of turning off. This feature is not my favourite and would make me think twice about buying another vehicle with it. Secondly, the tires have a very low profile, with only a few inches between the road and rim. Unfortunately, I have had two blowouts due to the narrow space between the road and rim. One blowout was from hitting a curb and another from a pothole. Both situations would not have happened with regular height tires. At about $300 a replacement, this is a very expensive problem.

We bought our 2016 3.0T prem plus A6 in June 2016. Unfortunately, a month later, the in-dash screen went dark and only powered up again after turning the car off and restarting it after 15 minutes. This happened again every 5-6 months, and despite taking it to the dealership, they were unable to replicate the issue. In March 2018, the car stalled on a busy highway, completely locking up, but luckily we were unharmed. After keeping it for 3 days, the Steven Creek dealership also could not replicate the problem. Although we turned off the auto start system, the transmission started to lurch and the engine speed could rumble at low speed as if it might stall again intermittently. Given our previous experiences with our 2008 A4, 2011 A6, and 2011 Q5, which were burning 1 qt of oil every 5000 miles, and were told that this was 'normal,' along with the eventual diesel gate scandal, we have decided to part ways with this Audi A6 and leave the VW/Audi brand altogether because we value our lives.
Brad Gorczany 2024-09-03
This is my third A6 and I was so excited to love it, especially after having such great experiences with my previous two. I went to a new dealership and was lucky enough to have a wonderfully helpful sales person. However, I have been experiencing some issues with the car. Despite purchasing the prestige model with all the technology packages, including the heads up display and driver assist, almost nothing seems to work right. I have had trouble inputting addresses into the GPS, the brake assist never seems to work, and the phone system and voice activation often get names wrong. I have been in contact with 'Audi Experience' multiple times and have had some difficulty getting the issues resolved. While I have been frustrated with the situation, I am hopeful that we can find a solution. I am considering exploring 'lemon law' protection, but I am still hopeful that we can find a resolution. Overall, I am disappointed with my experience so far, but I am still a fan of Audi and their products. Thank you for your time.
