The Chevrolet Cobalt is a compact car introduced by Chevrolet in 2004 for the 2005 model year. The Cobalt replaced both the Cavalier and the Toyota-based Geo/Chevrolet Prizm as Chevrolet's compact car. The Cobalt was available as both a coupe and sedan, as well as a sport compact version dubbed the Cobalt SS. Like the Chevrolet HHR and the Saturn ION, it was based on the GM Delta platform.

A Pontiac version was sold in the United States and Mexico under the G5 name for 2007–2009. It was sold as the Pontiac G4 in Mexico for 2005–2006 and as the Pontiac G5 in Canada for its entire run (where it was briefly known as the Pontiac Pursuit and later Pontiac G5 Pursuit). The G5 replaced the Cavalier-related Pontiac Sunfire. While the Cobalt was available as a 2-door coupe and a 4-door sedan in all markets it was offered in, the G5 was only available as a coupé in the United States while a sedan version was sold alongside the coupé in Canada and Mexico.

As with their predecessors, all Cobalts and its Pontiac equivalents were manufactured at GM's plant in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico and Lordstown, Ohio. The United States Environmental Protection Agency classified the Cobalt as a subcompact car.

  • Summary: My 2009 Pontiac G5 was driven to work this morning 6-10-21and parked in a Michigan State vehicle garage. Security notified me at work that my vehicle had a puddle of gas under and near a rear tire. I removed vehicle frome parking garage and parked it in a remote open parking lot. A gas leak in a car is dangerous, and a safety issue for me and others , especially in a parking garage!!! The vehicle has always been maintained as I am the original owner of the car. The car will be delivered to the dealer for inspection on 6/14/21. There are no recalls on this car . Opon my own investigation after the incident, there are numerous complaints logged into NHTSA of a rust issue of the fuel line where it is clamped near the fuel tank. There is also reports of crack developing at the intank fuel pump connection. ALL Cobalts,G5 's and other variations of this vehicle should be recalled immediately and inspections of the fuel system be reported back to NHTSA. Was there a fire? My answer is "NOT YET".

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-03-15
  • VIN: 1G2AS18H597
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: AROUND 127000 MILES I NOTICED A STRONG SMELL OF GASOLINE, AND A SMALL DRIP FROM UNDER MY CAR, AFTER TAKING A CLOSER LOOK I NOTICED THAT IT WAS GAS, AND IT WAS COMING FROM THE RETAINING CLIP THAT HOLDS THE FUEL/BRAKE LINES IN PLACE, I WAS NOT FINANCIALLY STABLE TO HAVE THIS REPAIRED AT THE TIME, AND IT WASN'T LEAKING TO BAD SO I LEFT IT GO, AFTER ABOUT 2-3 MORE WEEKS I WAS DRIVING AND NOTICED THAT I COULD LITERALLY SEE MY FUEL GAUGE DROPPING, I IMMEDIATELY PULLED OVER AND INSPECTED THE PROBLEM AREA AND SEE THAT THE CAR WAS DUMPING FUEL AND A VERY HIGH PRESSURIZED RATE, I ALSO TOOK NOTE THAT THE GAS WAS BEING SPRAYED ONTO THE HOT EXHAUST THAT IS ABOUT 4-6? AWAY FROM THE FUEL LINES, I GOT THE CAR HOME AND PARKED IT, AFTER DOING HOURS OF RESEARCH I SEEN THAT 95% OF THIS YEAR AND MODEL OF GM HAVE THIS ISSUE DUE TO THE HEAT SHIELDING ON THE FUEL LINES AFTER SEARCHING MY VIN IT SAYS THAT MY VEHICLE HAS NO ACTIVE RECALLS BUT I'VE SEEN COMPLAINT AFTER COMPLAINT ABOUT THIS ISSUE, NOT ONLY THAT IT IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS THAT GAS IS BEING STAYED OUT UNDER PRESSURE WHICH IS CAUSING IT TO VAPORIZE AND BECOME EVEN MORE OF A FIRE HAZARD, NOT TO MENTION IT IS INCHES AWAY FROM THE EXHAUST AND DIRECTLY BELOW THE FUEL TANK... THIS ISSUE SHOULD DEFIANTLY BE ADDRESSED WITH GM AND BE SUBMITTED FOR RECALL IN MY OPINION, THIS ISSUE ONLY HAPPENS WHEN THE VEHICLE IS ON OR THE KEY IS TURNED TO THE ON POSITION AND THE FUEL PUMP IS PRIMED AND RUNNING TO CHARGE THE FUEL LINES, AFTER THE VEHICLE IS TURNED OFF THE LEAK STOPS AFTER THE FUEL LINE HAS DRAINED ONTO THE GROUND CAUSING ANOTHER FIRE HAZARD AND A ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARD MAKING IT AN ISSUE TO START THE CAR AGAIN DUE TO NO GAS BEING IN THE LINES, IN MY CASE I HAVE TO TURN THE KEY TO ON AND GIVE THE FUEL PUMP ABOUT 15 SECONDS TO PRIME AND PUMP GAS INTO THE LINES, THIS ISSUE HAS MADE IT IMPOSSIBLE TO DRIVE AS I DUMP A GALLON OF FUEL EVERY 2-3 MILES. *TR

2009 Pontiac G5 recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 6 recalls for different components of the 2009 Pontiac G5.

2014-04-30
  • Manufacturer: UCI-FRAM Group
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:SWITCH
  • Summary: UCI-FRAM Group is recalling certain LS1328 ignition Switches sold as Wells LS1328, Duralast LS1328, Airtex 1S6097, and Carquest 53-27479, and LS1497 Ignition Switches sold as Wells LS1497, Duralast LS1497, Airtex 1S10961, and Carquest 53-27967, for use on various General Motors model and model year vehicles during repair and replacement of the original ignition switch. The weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the affected ignition switches to move out of the run position, turning off the engine and disabling the air bags.
  • Consequence: If the ignition switch moves from the run position to accessory, the car would stall and the air bags will not deploy in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of personal injury to the occupants.
  • Remedy: UCI-FRAM Group has notified its purchasers to quarantine and return all inventory. Any switches already installed in vehicles will be replaced by GM dealers as part of NHTSA recall 14V-047, free of charge. UCI-Fram's purchasers should contact UCI-FRAM Group at 1-800-890-2075. GM vehicle owners requiring additional information on that recall campaign should contact GM at 1-800-222-1020 (Chevrolet), 1-800-762-2737 (Pontiac) or 1-800-553-6000 (Saturn).
2014-04-10
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2005-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, 2006-2011 Chevrolet HHR, 2007-2010 Pontiac G5, 2006-2010 Pontiac Solstice, 2003-2007 Saturn Ion, and 2007-2010 Saturn Sky vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "Off" position.
  • Consequence: If the key can be removed from the ignition when the ignition is not in the "off" position, the vehicle could roll away: (a) for an automatic transmission, if the transmission is not in the "Park" position; or (b) for a manual transmission, if the parking brake is not engaged and the transmission is not in the "Reverse" position. This potential for rollaway increases the risk for a crash and occupant or pedestrian injuries.
  • Remedy: General Motors will notify owners, and for vehicles that were built with the defective ignition cylinder and have not previously had the ignition cylinder replaced with the redesigned part, dealers will replace the ignition cylinder and cut and, if necessary, re-learn two ignition/door keys for each vehicle. For vehicles that were built with the redesigned ignition cylinder or had the ignition cylinder replaced with the redesigned part, dealers will cut and, if necessary, re-learn two ignition/door keys for each vehicle. The recall began on April 18, 2014. Chevrolet owners may contact General Motors at 1-800-222-1020, Pontiac owners at 1-800-762-2737, and Saturn owners at 1-800-553-6000. General Motors' number for this recall is 14113 for the ignition lock cylinder and key replacement, and 14133 for only key replacements. Note: Until a vehicle has been remedied, owners and operators are advised that when exiting, to be sure that the vehicle is in "Park," or in the case of a manual transmission, that the vehicle is in the "Reverse" position and the parking brake is engaged.
2014-02-10
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on February 10, 2014 that they are recalling 619,122 model year 2005-2007 Chevrolet Cobalt, and 2007 Pontiac G5 vehicles. On February 25, 2014, GM increased the recall to include an additional 748,024 model year 2006-2007 Chevrolet HHR and Pontiac Solstice vehicles and 2003-2007 Saturn Ion vehicles and 2007 Saturn Sky vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine. On March 27, 2014, GM notified the agency that the defective ignition switches may have been used as service replacement parts on other vehicles, and as a result GM will be recalling certain model year 2008-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, Saturn Sky, and Pontiac G5 and Solstice, and 2008-2011 Chevrolet HHR vehicles. The part numbers for the service parts are 10392423 (a/k/a ACDelco D1461F), 10392737, 15857948, 15854953, 15896640, and 25846762. This expansion represents an additional 823,788 vehicles.
  • Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the ignition switch, free of charge. An interim notification was issued to owners of 2007 and earlier models on March 10, 2014, informing them of the safety defect. Owners of 2008 and later vehicles will be mailed an interim letter on April 21, 2014. All affected owners will receive another letter once parts are available. The recall began on April 18, 2014. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020, Pontiac at 1-800-762-2737 or Saturn at 1-800-553-6000. GM's number for the initial recall is 13454 and 14063 for the expansion. GM’s recall number for the vehicles that may have received the replacement parts is 14092. Note: Until the recall repairs have been performed, it is very important that customers remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the vehicle key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. Always wear your seatbelt.

Negative 2009 Pontiac G5 car reviews

  1. Misael Lemke 2024-10-13

The exterior styling of the G5 is quite nice, but I was a bit disappointed with the actual gas mileage. The fit and finish is typical of a domestic car, with lots of hard plastics. It's not bad, but it's not particularly appealing either.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with the car I recently purchased. I was able to take advantage of some great rebates, including 'owner loyalty' and GM Card fun bucks, which helped me get a car with an MSRP of 19K for only 12K before taxes! While the interior is functional and looks okay, I did notice some issues with the exterior body panels not fitting properly. However, the car handles well and has adequate acceleration with the 5-speed manual transmission. It's definitely an upgrade from my 2002 Toyota Corolla! The only downside is the poor rear visibility, which almost made me reconsider my purchase. Overall, I'm happy with my decision, especially since it's a well-equipped commuter car that I can eventually pass down to my kid. Thanks for listening!

If you're considering purchasing a car, I would recommend looking at options other than the Pontiac G5 or Chev. Cobalt. In my experience, the seats were uncomfortable and the gas mileage wasn't great for a small 4 cylinder car. Additionally, my car did not come with a spare tire or jack, which was inconvenient. While the car is made of plastic, it is not the most durable material. Finally, I have concerns about the resale value of these cars. I hope this information is helpful in your car-buying journey!

  4. Elvis Huel 2024-03-28

Despite experiencing some issues with my new car, I have been proactive in addressing them with the dealership. After several visits, the issue with the clunking noise in the front end has been resolved. While there were a couple of minor oversights in the repair process, I am confident that the dealership will rectify them. I am committed to ensuring that my car is in top condition and will continue to work with the dealership to achieve this. Although there have been some challenges, I remain optimistic about the future performance of my car.

  5. Adam Langworth 2024-01-25

It's a great car, but unfortunately, I've had a dead battery twice. I've had it serviced at Steinle GM in Fremont, OH, but they haven't been able to fix it yet. I'm not sure if it's because they don't care or don't know how. The car has run-down protection, so the battery should never go dead. However, they just say that there's nothing they can do.

Positive 2009 Pontiac G5 car reviews

In 2014, I bought this car used from a reputable dealer in my area. To be honest, I've always owned foreign vehicles, but due to a limited budget, I had to be practical. The dealer showed me this car, and although I wasn't initially impressed, after a test drive, I changed my mind. This car is amazing! I've been driving it for about 18 months now, and as a commuter who drives about 30,000 miles a year, my little silver bullet has proven to be reliable even through an extreme winter in Ohio. It has never given me any engine trouble, and it's pretty comfortable for a base model. I make sure to keep the oil changed and do regular maintenance as the manufacturer suggests. Update as of 6/17: Unfortunately, something finally went wrong with this little car. In April, I found out that the transmission needed to be replaced. I had it replaced for $1992, just as a point of reference for anyone who might be interested. But even after that, it's still running great! I now have 166,000 miles on this car.

  2. Rex Deckow 2024-11-04

As a 19-year-old who is 6ft and 210lb, I found the car to be very comfortable. I absolutely love the styling, and it looks fantastic when it's well taken care of. Although I found the e-brake under the armrest to be a bit odd, it wasn't really a problem. Even though I drive very aggressively, I still get great gas mileage. Compared to my previous vehicle (2003 Aztek), it's extremely fun to drive. While it does tend to lag slightly until you reach 40+ mph, this can be easily remedied with affordable after-market parts such as performance exhaust and intake.

  3. Sonny Macejkovic 2024-08-02

This is a very affordable vehicle that comes with rebates and brownie points. It's a great commuter car, especially when you consider that the competition costs more for not a whole lot more car. The interior could be better, but I knew what I was getting when I bought it. I really like how quiet the engine is.

  4. Hollis Kertzmann 2024-07-17

I just bought a new 2009 G5 with an automatic transmission. It was priced $4k lower than a similarly equipped 2009 Honda Civic. According to Consumer Reports, the G5 has a reliability rating equal to the Honda Civic, except for 'body integrity and/or finish,' and has a better reliability rating than most American-built cars. Additionally, it has a better factory warranty than Honda or Toyota. Although only time will tell if this G5 will be as reliable as my other car, a Honda, I'm already enjoying the creature comforts, sound system, and the 'GREAT' gas mileage - 39+ mpg! I'm happy that the car received so-so ratings, which keeps the price down and makes it more affordable in these tough times.

This vehicle hugs the road, has great visibility, no factory defects and is fun to drive
