2005 Hyundai Santa fe problems
The Hyundai Santa Fe (Korean: 현대 싼타페) is an automobile produced by the South Korean manufacturer Hyundai since 2000. It is a five-door crossover SUV that either has front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. It is named after the city of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and was introduced for the 2001 model year as Hyundai's first SUV. The Santa Fe was a milestone in the company's restructuring program of the late 1990s because the SUV was a hit with American buyers. Between 2006 and 2012, the Santa Fe was positioned between the smaller Tucson compact crossover and the larger Veracruz.
The third-generation Santa Fe introduced in 2012 was available in two versions, which are regular (short) and extended long-wheelbase version. The short model was sold as the Santa Fe Sport in North America (three-row seating was not available) and simply Santa Fe in global markets (three-row seating was standard or optional), while the extended long-wheelbase model is called the Santa Fe in the US, Santa Fe XL in Canada and called the Hyundai Maxcruz in South Korea. The fifth and current generation was released in 2023 and omits diesel engines in favor of petrol hybrid powertrains.
As of 2022, the Santa Fe is positioned between the smaller Tucson – which the Santa Fe shares platform with – and the larger Palisade in Hyundai's global crossover SUV line-up.

Common 2005 Hyundai Santa fe problems
The Hyundai Santa Fe 2005 has been praised by its owners for its reliability, capability, comfort, and ease of maintenance. However, there are some common problems that have been reported by owners.
- Underpowered Engine: The 2.7-liter engine of the Hyundai Santa Fe 2005 is underpowered, but it provides good fuel efficiency.
- Design Flaws: There are some design flaws in the 2005 Hyundai Santa Fe, such as the third brake light hanging in the rear window, which can be distracting for the driver. Additionally, the back three spark plugs are located under the intake manifold, making them difficult and expensive to replace.
- Limited Legroom for Taller Drivers: The driver's seat of the Hyundai Santa Fe does not go back far enough for taller drivers, which can cause discomfort during long drives.
- Electronics Issues: Electronics have been the biggest issue for some owners of the Hyundai Santa Fe 2005. However, despite these issues, many owners still love the car and are looking to purchase a newer model.
- Throttle Position Sensor Failure: One major issue reported by a Santa Fe owner is the failure of the throttle position sensor. This issue can be resolved by identifying the problem and fixing it, which typically takes only an hour and costs minimally.
- Check Engine Light Issue: Another problem reported by a Santa Fe owner is that the check engine light comes on when the gas gets too low and stays on until half a tank of gas is used. This issue is not a significant problem and can be easily resolved by filling up the gas tank.
- Suspension Issues: The suspension of the Hyundai Santa Fe is simple and cheap, but it has some limitations. The front struts are weak and can be damaged if the car is driven aggressively. The Springs are also expectedly weak and cannot withstand overloads. The front levers are sturdy, but the ball tab is replaceable. The rubber elements require replacement, even with runs up to 60,000 miles.
- Power Steering Issues: The power steering system of the Santa Fe is not happy with the abrasion of the installation side of the central oil seal and the flimsy structure. With age, it begins to knock due to the wear of the side bushings.
In summary, while the Hyundai Santa Fe 2005 has some common problems, many owners still love the car for its reliability, capability, comfort, and ease of maintenance. The most significant issues reported by owners include underpowered engine, design flaws, limited legroom for taller drivers, electronics issues, throttle position sensor failure, check engine light issue, suspension issues, and power steering issues.

Hello! I recently bought a Santa Fe after always driving smaller cars like the Honda Civic and Mazda Protege. While it's a good vehicle and very comfortable inside, I'm considering selling it and going back to a sedan. I expected my gas mileage to decrease with an SUV, but I thought I'd still average in the low to mid 20s since it's a 6 cylinder and not that big. Unfortunately, I'm only averaging 17 to 20 miles per gallon, even with driving conservatively. The ride is smooth, but I find myself being cautious with sudden moves. Overall, it's not a bad vehicle, but be prepared to pay more at the pump if you get one.

I'm glad to hear that you've had a positive experience with your Hyundai! Despite some negative reviews from the carbuying press, our 2003 model has been running smoothly for almost 3 years now. We did encounter a minor issue with the oil pump pressure relief valve freezing at 43,000 miles, but it was quickly and efficiently resolved under Hyundai's excellent warranty program. We were even provided with a loaner car during the repair process. The V-6 engine provides more than enough power for its class and delivers impressive gas mileage, averaging 24mpg in town and 29-31 on the highway with the standard automatic transmission. We've been so pleased with the quality of our Hyundai that we used the $2000 owner loyalty rebate towards the purchase of our Elantra. Compared to other SUVs like the RAV-4 or CRV, the Santa Fe offers all the same features at a much more affordable price point.

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my car. After having some trouble with my previous vehicle, I did some research and decided to go with the Sante Fe for its great warranty. I've found that it has plenty of room in the back for things like beach chairs and furniture, and the cup holders and seats are really good too. The only thing I've noticed is that the engine doesn't have a lot of power, but that's not really an issue for me since I don't need to go over 70 mph. I've put 60k miles on it so far and I'm hoping it will last me a long time! Thanks for listening.

This is the only car that my dad has had for a long time. He purchased it in 2014 and it's still going strong in 2018 with no major problems. The only issue we had was with the AC compressor, but even without AC during the summer, we still enjoyed driving it. It's a comfortable car with an excellent ride height, and the smooth ride at 70+ mph even puts my brother right to sleep!
-
Great car for the price! You get more bang for your bucks than the competition. It's been absolutely reliable, not a single thing to replace. The OEM tires were decent, but there was a bit too much interior noise.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to let you know that this vehicle may not be the best option for wet pavement, especially in moderate rain showers. Additionally, the driver's compartment may not have enough stretch room for your left leg and foot. However, it is easy to park! Lastly, the gas mileage may not be the best. Have a great day!
Lawrence Schaefer 2024-10-17
Hi there, I wanted to share my experience with this vehicle. Unfortunately, during a rollover accident, the side airbags did not deploy despite my assumption that they would. I flipped the car six times and was disappointed that the airbags did not activate. I hope this information can help someone else stay safe. Take care!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my car. I've had it for about 3 years now and it's been mostly great. However, at around 42,000 miles, I noticed a problem while driving. The RPM suddenly started revving up and dropping back down, causing the car to lunge forward and then jerk backward. It was quite scary and I wasn't able to make it home. I had to have the car towed and the dealer said it was the throttle sensor. They fixed it and the car worked fine for 3 months, but then the same problem occurred again. I had to have it towed again and unfortunately, the same problem happened 3 months later. I'm starting to feel a bit nervous about driving this car, especially on the highway. I'm considering getting rid of it and finding something else. What do you think?
Blaise Padberg 2024-08-11
The car was purchased at an auction in Tampa, FL. However, after only two months of ownership, it began experiencing overheating and various other mechanical issues.
Alfredo Howe 2024-07-18
If the gas mileage were better, this could be the perfect mid-size SUV. It's reasonably priced, has good standard features, and comes with a great warranty.
