2021 Honda Cr-v problems
The Honda CR-V (also sold as the Honda Breeze in China since 2019) is a compact crossover SUV manufactured by Japanese automaker Honda since 1995. Initial models of the CR-V were built using the same platform as the Civic.
Honda began producing the CR-V in Sayama, Japan, and Swindon, United Kingdom, for worldwide markets, adding North American manufacturing sites in East Liberty, Ohio, United States, in 2007; El Salto, Jalisco, Mexico, in late 2007 (ended in early 2017); Alliston, Ontario, Canada, in 2012; and Greensburg, Indiana, United States, in February 2017. The CR-V is also produced in Wuhan for the Chinese market by Dongfeng Honda, and also marketed as the Breeze in China for the version produced at Guangzhou by Guangqi Honda.
Honda states "CR-V" stands for "Comfortable Runabout Vehicle," while the term "Compact Recreational Vehicle" is used in a British car review article that was republished by Honda, associating the model name with the Sports Utility Vehicle abbreviation of SU-V.
As of 2022, the CR-V is positioned between the smaller ZR-V (marketed as HR-V in North America) – which the CR-V shares platform with – and the larger North American market Passport/Pilot or the Chinese market Avancier/UR-V. It is currently Honda's best-selling vehicle in the world, and the second best-selling SUV globally in 2020.

- VIN: 7FART6H53ME
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: A code came up with VSA for braking system. With 27,002 miles I was informed it needed a brake module with booster to the tune of $2500.00. The mechanic informed me he has seen this in many hybrids. My nephew who is s lead mechanic for Kia informed me he has replaced a few in Kia hybrids. Further investigation revealed Honda recalling a half million hybrids in Japan for the same issue. No recall for Europe or America for this issue and Honda has no intention of covering this. If the manufacturer of this part is the same for many Japanese makers and this issue appears across the board, why hasn’t a recall or proper fix been established?

LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-21
- VIN: 2HKRW2H88MH
- Components: LANE DEPARTURE,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: The car's forward collision warning system is defective. The car will randomly bring up "BRAKE" on the dashboard with nothing even close to the car. This has started happening many times over the past few weeks, with even at least one instance of the car braking on its own. I brought this up to the dealership during my last oil change recently, and they inspected and looked into it. They said there was nothing wrong with the sensors/system and they documented it (specifically saying no problem found vehicle is operating normally at this time). However, a day or two after the dealership, the problem returned and it continues to persist. In addition to this, the blind spot warning system also randomly goes off when nothing is nearby, but not as often as the braking system, which is more dangerous in my opinion.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-25
- VIN: 7FART6H81ME
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: 1 weeks ago the crv over heated once, shut the car off gave it 5min turned it back on and got it home no further issue, never over heated again Then on Monday the check engine light started flashing took to a shop they said it was due to spark plugs and ignition coils. The very next day flashed again, took back to shop they said it was my head gasket, took to a second shop and they confirmed that it was a head gasket but most likely needed the entire engine replaced at over $17,0000 The car is only 3 years old with 145k miles and already needs a new engine.
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-17
- VIN: 2HKRW1H89MH
- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: The forward collision warning and braking has activated a couple of times without any car front of me for a wide distance or when everything is all clear. It also happened a couple of times when turning a curve or exiiting, also without any car in front of me. The only thing I could notice was the dashboard flashing but I could not read it because I had to focus on the road.

STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-16
- VIN: 2HKRW1H85MH
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: My vehicle (2021 Honda CRV EX-L, 47,000 miles) is currently out of factory warranty. However, issue with the steering rack has caused issues with sound and sticky steering. This is a known issue with this specific model. Honda diagnosed an issue with my vehicle as being power steering rack being faulty. A manufacture defect they added. This was after replacing a axle they suspected turned out it was not the issue. They will not honor a full replacement of this faulty part. At the moment after going back and worth, they are agreeing to take care of half the repair amount which we feel is unacceptable knowing that this issue is a manufacture defect. We are aware of a current investigation with the NHTSA that's looking into this matter but we wanted to reach out and ask if Honda should be liable for the cost of the repairs regardless of the warranty expired. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-06
- VIN: 7FART6H86ME
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ENGINE
- Summary: The battery voltage of the car goes down to 2 bars, the the check engine light comes on. Sometimes the car/engine shakes and the loses power and won’t accelerate anymore. This happens even if the car is already on the road going up to 70 mph. We took it to the Honda service center and they spent 3 hours on it, but couldn’t find the issue. This is not safe, very scary when it happens and has been happening every few days. This could cause an accident especially when it just loses power and we have to pull over to shut off engine to restart to get battery power again.
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-01
- VIN: 5J6RW1H51MA
- Components: STEERING

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-11
- VIN: 2HKRW2H59MH
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Going down highway at 60mph, I heard a loud boom from pass side rear wheel I pull over safely to rest area, Got out thought maybe a tire blew but that wasn’t it, Got towed to a Honda Dealership and upon further inspection I was told the rear differential was cracked, The explanation I was told from Honda was I drove in reverse and hit something so hard that caused the cracks, What they couldn’t explain to me was why there was no other damage to the underneath of the car, I did have the extended warranty on my car but I believe Honda doesn’t want to honor it,I did some research and found this vehicle was having problems with a defective rear seal, Thank you if your able to ask more questions for me
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-01
- VIN: 7FARW1H80ME
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: My car began making a popping noise when I would make a slight left turn and began to straighten back out. It would also have a slight tug on the steering wheel when the popping noise would happen. It started out random and got worse and more frequent as time went on. I do feel like it was a safety concern because of the tug in the steering. I took my car to the dealership and they confirmed that it was the power steering rack and that they had had some problems with the manufacturer they were using and that the new manufacturer they were using had the part on back order. They just called me two weeks ago and replaced it on August 22nd. Since it has been replaced the steering issue and noise has not occurred again. The vehicle did not ever give me any warning indicators.
FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-29
- VIN: 5J6RW2H5XML
- Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: I was driving on the middle lane of a major highway, going around 70 mph, when a plastic grocery bag floated in front of the car, at a height of about two feet off of the ground. My vehicle suddenly slammed on the brakes. It slammed hard and I could not make it stop. I tried to push the brake but it was already down. I was nearly rear-ended and could have easily caused a multiple car accident. I may have been using the cruise-control at the time, but I'm not sure. I do not recall if the vehicle flashed an orange "BRAKE" warning. I did not take the vehicle to a dealer to try to recreate the problem.
SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-15
- VIN: 2HKRW2H81MH
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: My vehicle lost brakes as I was driving. The dealer stated it was because of wiring problem but I read where crv were having a problem with the accident mitigation system. They replaced my wiring harnes to my rear view mirror. The dealer couldn't explain why I lost power to my brakes.
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-01
- VIN: 2HKRW2H85MH
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: COMPONENT IS THE POWER STEERING RACK. THE STEERING BECAME HARD TO STEER AND SEEMED TO STICK WHEN TURNING THE WHEEL. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE AS THE STEERING FAILS TO RESPONE AS EXPECTED WHEN YOU ARE TURNING THE WHEEL. DEALER HAS CONFIRMED THE PROBLEM AND WHEN I CONTACTED HONDA THEY VERIFIED THAT THIS IS AN ONGOING PROBLEM WITH THIS MODEL. THERE WERE NO WARNING LIGHTS OR ANY OTHER MESSAGES FOR THIS PROBLEM. WHEN THE MANUFACTURE WAS UNABLE TO SUPPLY A REPLACEMENT PART DUE TO BACKORDER THE DEALER PROCURED THE PART FROM ANOTHER DEALER. AFTER THIS PART WAS INSTALLED I EXPERIANCE A GROULING NOISE WHEN TURNING THE STEERING WHEEL AND QUICKLY EXPERIANCED THE SAME STICKING WHILE TURNING THE WHEEL. THE DEALER IS STILL WAITING FOR ANOTHER REPLACEMENT FROM THE MANUFACTURE.
POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-13
- VIN: 7FART6H95ME
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: This is the second time this vehicle has randomly lost power / internal combustion engine stalled while driving on the interstate. Vehicle was traveling approximately 70mph steady for 10 minutes when the incident occurred. The combustion engine began to shutter and stalled, check engine light began blinking. Hybrid battery went down to zero and had to make an emergency departure off the highway with no power. Vehicle had to be powered off and powered back on to resume normal operation. Because the CELlight cleared the dealership cannot look up the fault and mark it as NPF. When I search this issue, it seems to be fairly common with the 2020+ honda hybrids (crv and accords). This type of power train failure / stall is extremely dangerous especially on highways with little or no warning and time to react. We are begging the NHTSA to have Honda do a through investigation and recall to remediate the engine stall failures on these hybrid vehicles ASAP as this is extremely dangerous for our family and other drivers around us.
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-31

The dealer said the unit needs to be replaced and the car is not safe to drive. There are no parts available and the car has been at the dealership for two months. If it involves a manufacture defect, why has there been no recall by Honda.

Positive 2021 Honda Cr-v car reviews
-
Great comfortable car! It has all the bells and whistles and great gas mileage. I'm sure the electronics will survive. I also hope that Honda has fixed the oil dilution issue.
-
This is our sixth Honda, all purchased new, covering the last 40 years. All of these vehicles have been very dependable, low maintenance, fine-driving, and extremely safe vehicles. The new 2021 CRV is a fine addition to Honda's history of fine vehicles. I feel for those folks who have had a bad new car experience, but with Honda it's normally the exception rather than the rule.
-
The car is great! However, I had to purchase a seatbelt extension for the backward extending back seats.
-
You'll love this Honda and everything about it, except for a few high-tech features like lane changing warning or blind spot warning. But the good news is that you can turn them off if you want to. The vehicle offers a quiet, supple ride with nice handling and good acceleration with the standard turbo. And if you like roominess, this vehicle is perfect for you, with lots of space up front and in the back.
-
We drove comparable models from Subaru, Toyota, and Mazda. In our opinion, the Honda CR-V is the clear winner when it comes to price, amenities, comfort, quietness inside, cargo space, pickup, responsiveness, and handling. We believe that nothing else comes close at this price point.

The car had only 743 miles on it when it experienced a sudden loss of power and the dashboard displayed multiple system failure messages while merging onto the interstate. This was a concerning situation as it could have potentially led to a fatal accident before being able to safely pull over.
Elmo Treutel 2024-11-22
In 2019, I considered the CRV but ended up purchasing the Mazda CX5 without test driving the CRV. Recently, I had the opportunity to rent a CRV while on vacation, but unfortunately, I was not impressed with its performance. Although it had more interior space than my Mazda and the ride was okay, the engine/CVT transmission combo was sluggish, especially off the line. I understand that smaller engines with turbos are used to increase fuel mileage, but this engine just takes too long to wind up and then turns a lot of RPM's. As someone who keeps their cars for a long time, I am not a fan of turbocharged engines due to potential major repairs. Additionally, the handling of the CRV was not as sporty as my CX5.
Scot Lebsack 2024-11-15
Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my CRV that I got back in April. I've put about 6k miles on it and just got an oil change 2 weeks ago. Unfortunately, I've been getting a check engine oil message that keeps popping up every 10 seconds while driving, even after trying to reset it. It's been quite frustrating and unexpected from a Honda, which is known for its reliability. If you're considering buying or leasing this model, I would recommend doing some research on the oil issues with the 1.5T engine. Personally, I'm looking forward to trading it in for something else. Take care!
Marcos Marquardt 2024-09-10
I've owned 6 CRVs and have traded them in every 4 years. From the first to the fifth, I just had to learn the new changes, which were always for the better. However, my 2020 touring model is my least favorite due to the noisy engine and the dying engine T stop lights, which is one more thing to go wrong and has to be shut off with every start. Additionally, I don't care for the humps over the front wheels, which can be a little distracting when parking. But what I miss beyond words is Lane Watch, which is the right side camera. I can't believe it isn't even an option. Unfortunately, the flashing symbol on the mirror is a joke and totally useless. I trusted the salesman and bought before delivery because I wanted a certain color, but it turned out to be a big mistake.
Durward Satterfield 2024-09-09
Have had nothing but problems with the car since we bought it brand new. Hardly any mileage on it. 6 months in and The heated seats are terrible. They are hardy warm and do not stay warm or on. The charging/ electrical system is faulty. Charging ports disconnect and stop charging phone and the screen on the car also glitches or just freezes. The automatic breaking system is also faulty and has braked for no reasons. There is also a bad odour when the AC is on.None of these were evident upon purchase. We are not thrilled.
