The GMC Terrain is a crossover SUV by American manufacturer General Motors under its GMC marque. Sharing its platform with the Chevrolet Equinox, the first-generation Terrain was built on GM's Theta platform, while the second-generation model is currently built on the Delta platform. The Terrain is the smallest GMC vehicle, slotted below the Acadia. It also indirectly replaced the Pontiac Torrent which was typically sold via the same dealerships prior to General Motors dropping the Pontiac brand.

First generation (2010)

The 2010 Terrain debuted in April 2009 at the New York International Auto Show, introduced as a replacement for the Pontiac Torrent, which ended production after GM shut down the Pontiac brand in 2010. Although the preceding Pontiac Torrent had the same Theta platform, the Torrent was a rebadged version of the original Chevrolet Equinox from 2005 to 2009, while GM decided to differ the look of the Chevrolet Equinox with its 2010 Terrain and still use the Theta platform. Early 2010 models had the GM Mark of Excellence logo applied on the sides of the vehicle.

The Terrain initially came in SLE and SLT trims. For the 2013 model year, a Denali trim was added, featuring additional chrome trim and slightly improved interior quality, the 3.6-liter SIDI V6 that is shared with the 2012 Cadillac SRX, and firmer front struts. The Denali also offers cross-traffic detection, blind-spot warning, and a power passenger seat as options. A low-end SL trim was added for 2015.

One of the most significant issues is related to the engine, with some owners reporting engine rebuilds or replacements, cylinder head, head gasket, turbocharger or supercharger, timing chain or belt problems. Some owners have also reported issues with the Terrain's drivetrain, including driveshaft or axle, CV joint, differential, transfer case, four-wheel-drive/all-wheel-drive components, driveline vibration, and electrical failure problems. These issues could lead to a loss of power and a decrease in fuel efficiency, which could be frustrating for owners.

Another common problem reported by owners is related to the Terrain's brakes, with some reporting premature pad/rotor wear, pulsation or vibration, antilock system, parking brake, master cylinder, calipers, squeaking, and brake failure issues. These problems could lead to a loss of braking power and a decrease in safety, which could be concerning for owners.

Finally, some owners have reported issues with the Terrain's suspension, including shocks or struts, ball joints, tie rods, wheel bearings, alignment, steering linkage, power steering, wheel balance, springs or torsion bars, bushings, and electronic or air suspension problems. These issues could lead to a loss of control and a decrease in ride quality, which could be frustrating for owners.

In summary, the 2023 GMC Terrain has a few common problems that have been reported by owners, including engine, transmission, electrical, drivetrain, brake, and suspension issues. Negative 2023 Gmc Terrain car reviews

  1. Milford Bayer 2024-10-23

The car handles well and the tiny engine, paired with its 9-speed transmission, is more than enough. Additionally, it is equipped with a lot of safety features. However, it is worth noting that road noise can be quite bothersome. Overall, it's a decent car, but it may not be the best fit for everyone.

  2. Eliezer Cormier 2024-09-26

Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with the 2023 terrain that I bought in January. While it has been good on gas, I have noticed that the car can be quite noisy. Additionally, I have had some issues with the service ESC message and the service engine light turning on. Overall, I'm a bit disappointed and this may be my first and last time buying a GMC. As I'm getting ready to retire soon, I was hoping this would be the vehicle to keep for a long time.

  3. Lukas Cummings 2024-09-24

Although the car had high hopes, the pushbutton gear shift was difficult to adjust to and the interior felt cheap, despite the upgrades. However, it is important to note that these issues do not detract from the overall quality of the vehicle.

  4. Gaston Schimmel 2024-09-08

I really liked the exterior of the car and did my research before purchasing it. However, I was surprised to find that I only averaged 24 mpg with 5k miles on my new 23 Terrain, despite the majority of my driving being on the highway. I used to drive an Acura MDX with a 3.5 V6 and I'm getting the same mpg with a vehicle that's half the size and power. I used to only need to fill up once a week, but now I have to fill up 4 times a week. I understand that the size of the tank affects the true mpg, but I feel like I shouldn't have to drive like a grandma to get the average mpg that the vehicle is rated for. I'm an aggressive driver, but I'm not peeling out or racing everywhere I go. It's frustrating that the ratings and comments for the 23 Terrain are lumped together with previous year models. As a buyer and researcher, I'm feeling very frustrated.

  5. Aaron Douglas 2024-08-25

The SLT has all the equipment you really need. It's reasonably good looking, but the engine, although quiet, is very underpowered. The transmission needs to change 2 or 3 ratios each time you put your foot down. It will accelerate, but it's not a nice experience.

Positive 2023 Gmc Terrain car reviews

  1. Clinton Dickinson 2024-11-07

This SUV is great! I'm so happy I chose a GMC vehicle!

  2. Santos Lehner 2024-09-04

I really appreciate the dashboard features, especially the seamless integration with Apple CarPlay and the convenience of hands-free calling. The black trim adds a nice touch of style as well.

  3. Lisandro McDermott 2024-07-24

I love it! I don't understand where all the bad reviews are coming from. It cruises all day at 75/80 and the seats are cozy. I got the AT4 with all the options except for the sky scraper roof. This vehicle is quiet with no wind noise and the fit and finish is top-notch. It's not as slow as some people say it is. I think the $41 grand was well spent because there are so many options. I still find new ones every day. My only complaint is that the foot-operated rear hatch works only once in a while and the center stack may be a little outdated.

  4. Llewellyn Gerlach 2024-06-02

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share that I recently picked up my new 2023 GMC Terrain. I'm really enjoying the sleek look and smooth drive, not to mention all the bells and whistles and modern safety features. I especially appreciate the all-wheel drive and how easy it is to switch from 2WD to 4WD. Thanks for letting me share!

  5. Hyman Kuphal 2024-05-19

I really like the car because it has great gas mileage, looks sharp, and drives nicely. However, I have noticed that when driving through a couple of inches of snow, the snow sticks to the inside of the wheels and causes a horrible shake. The design of the wheels could be improved. Additionally, the tires that come with the vehicle are not the best. It's unfortunate that you have to purchase snow tires on a leased vehicle. Vehicles sold in the Midwest should come with better all-season tires, otherwise, driving in the winter can be very scary and you may slide all over the road.
