The Chevrolet Silverado is a range of trucks manufactured by General Motors under the Chevrolet brand. Introduced for the 1999 model year, the Silverado is the successor to the long-running Chevrolet C/K model line. Taking its name from the top trim level from the Chevrolet C/K series, the Silverado is offered as a series of full-size pickup trucks, chassis cab trucks, and medium-duty trucks. The fourth generation of the model line was introduced for the 2019 model year.

The Chevrolet Silverado shares mechanical commonality with the identically related GMC Sierra; GMC ended the use of the C/K nomenclature a model generation prior to Chevrolet. In Mexico, high-trim level versions of the Silverado use the Chevrolet Cheyenne name (not to be confused with the 2003 concept). Competing against the Ford F-Series, Ram Pickup, Toyota Tundra, and Nissan Titan, the Silverado is among the best-selling vehicles in the United States, having sold over 12 million trucks since its introduction in 1998 as a 1999 model year.

History

The Silverado nameplate made its debut for the 1975 model year, becoming the top trim level on all Chevrolet C/K trucks, slotted above Custom Deluxe, Scottsdale, and Cheyenne. For the 1968 model year (seven years before the Silverado), GMC C/K trucks used variations of the Sierra name (Sierra, Sierra Classic, Sierra Grande, and High Sierra). Even after the C/K series officially ended, GM still uses the CK and the CC in their current model codes, to denote a two-wheel drive (CC), and four-wheel drive (CK).

For the 1988 GMT400 model architecture, Chevrolet retained the C/K model nomenclature, with GMC branding its full-size line as Sierras. While sharing the same body and chassis, the model chronology of the Silverado and Sierra are different, with five generations of the Sierra, while four of the Silverado.

In 2018, at the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, Indiana, Chevrolet unveiled the first medium-duty Silverado, expanding the model line to a 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD chassis cab. Largely the successor to the 2003–2009 GMT560 chassis, the medium-duty trucks are exclusive to Chevrolet, with no plans for an equivalent GMC version. Instead, Navistar International (now partnering with GM) would sell the medium-duty trucks as a rebadged counterpart, called the CV. This is in fact a very similar nod to how the Avalanche did not have a GMC Yukon–based equivalent, but instead, Cadillac would take its place as the former's rebadged counterpart, the Escalade EXT.

Common 2019 Gmc Sierra 1500 problems

The 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 is a popular full-size truck that has faced several common problems reported by its owners. These issues are not unique to the Sierra 1500 and are common among other full-size trucks. Here are the most common problems with the 2019 GMC Sierra 1500:

  1. Brake system becoming unresponsive: This is the most widespread complaint from 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 owners, with issues reported around 12,000 miles. The problem is caused by a software issue in the electronic brake control module, which can lead to the brake system becoming unresponsive. GMC has issued a recall for this issue and will reprogram the unit for free on affected models to improve the reliability of the brake system.
  2. Shifting hard between gears: Another problem mentioned by owners in the first 20,000 miles is shifting hard between gears, particularly with the eight-speed automatic transmission. This issue is caused by a software problem, and having the transmission software update can fix the issue. Most dealerships will install the software update for free, while some charge around $80.
  3. Frozen stereo system: Some Sierra 1500 models have reported a frozen stereo system at roughly 15,000 miles. This is also caused by a software issue, making the system become unresponsive, especially with Bluetooth connectivity. Many dealerships will update the software for free, while others charge up to $100.
  4. Four-wheel-drive transfer case position sensor/selector switch failure: Over 450 owners have reported this issue, which requires a visit to a service department for a diagnostic test, typically costing $88 to $111. If the selector switch needs replacing, the repair cost can be higher.
  5. A/C temperature and air delivery mode door actuator failure: Over 260 owners have reported this problem, which affects the HVAC system's ability to deliver air to cool or heat the Sierra's cab. This issue should appear as a fault in the A/C control module, requiring a diagnostic visit and potential repair costs.
  6. Fuel level sensor failure: Over 170 owners have reported this problem, which can lead to the fuel level sensor reading the fuel level incorrectly. RepairPal technicians recommend replacing the entire fuel pump module on high-mileage GMC Sierra 1500 models, which costs about $1,000.

These problems, while common, are similar to those faced by other full-size trucks, leading to average repair bills for a big truck.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-19
  • VIN: 1GTP9EEL9KZ
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: On [XXX] at approximately 2 pm the 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4 (with 6.2 gas motor) motor died while I was driving in traffic. Incident #1 - The vehicle started sputtering and died - no alerts on dash until after the truck died - an empty fuel tank symbol briefly lit up on dash that led me to suspect a fuel pump issue as the fuel tank was full. Safety issue = vehicle failure with no warning in traffic putting occupants in risk. The vehicle would not start and was towed to the GMC dealer where I had purchased the vehicle. Incident #2, the 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4 has an electronic gear shifter and will not go into neutral unless engine is running - problem as needed tow as not able to crank yet struggled to get towed as transmission will not go into neutral - apparently dealer has special tool to put 2019 GMC Sierra into neutral that is not available to consumer. Service department at dealer - Childre GMC in Milledgeville GA - contacted me on September 25, 2024 and stated 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4 needs a Fuel Pump Control Module part number 13565641 but the part is not available in the GM system and may take weeks or months for part to arrive. Apparently, there are other GM trucks at this dealership waiting same part (appears to be a national issue not just a one time issue). Dealer gave me a GMC customer service number to call. I called GMC customer service on September 25, 2024 and registered a complaint that no parts are available to fix my car. Neither the selling dealer or GM customer service offered any relief with a loaner or rental car. Internet searches on forums focused on new GMC/Chevrolet trucks confirm that multiple consumers have this issue with the Fuel Pump Control Module and that GM cannot supply the repair part. The part is not available on the secondary supply chain like AutoZone, Oreilly, or similar. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-03
  • VIN: 3GTU9DED7KG
  • Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT. Truck would not start on several occassions. By playing with brake, shift, and steering wheel truck would start again., Also would show warning notices, last one being {engine oil low-add oil}, even right after I just had the oil changed. This last time it would not start I paid to have my mechanic come to me to check it out. He tested a lot and thought it might be the starter so I then had to pay to have it flat-bedded to their garage. What he finally found was a BUNCH of wires worn through in a major wiring harness. It was caused by the wiring harness being next to the steering knuckle and the steering was wearing through the wires exposing bare wires. The mechanic and I see this as a major safety concern and a possible fire hazard. He has told me others have had similer problems . I believe this should definitly be a safety recall for these vehicles. My mechanic states that a new wiring harness olone is about $1500.00 plus a LOT of labor to install it. I do not believe that I should have to pay for a defect in GMC building this truck I have a picture of this mess of wires if you can help me with this. Don't know how to upload the photo I have but would gladly send it to you, Please respond back to this. Thank You Dennis Dorn

  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 1GTP9EED8KZ
  • Components: STEERING,WHEELS
  • Summary: While making a righthand turn at approximately 10-15 mph, my passenger side front wheel failed at the ball joint and collapsed. Reviewing the carfax, this is the 2nd time this has happened to this vehicle (the first was on the driver side wheel). I noticed Safety Recall Report 21V-718 seems to describe the issue I'm facing with the "front upper control arm experiencing accelerated wear... leading to ball joint separation", but according to GM, since no unsatisfied recalls are shown on my VIN report, there's nothing they're willing to do. I believe the failed part number is 573. This failure left my truck sitting in the middle of the road obviously with no way to move it other than a tow truck dragging it onto his bed.

  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the driveshaft, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin December 2020. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267. GM's number for this recall is N202314870.

  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Cadillac CT6, and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles. • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:12V/24V/48V BATTERY:CABLES
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2019-2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 trucks. The battery positive (B+) cable rings may have been manufactured with excessive glue, potentially causing an intermittent electrical connection between the B+ cable and alternator.
  • Consequence: An intermittent electrical connection between the B+ battery cable and the alternator could cause the vehicle to stall, increasing the risk of a crash. The intermittent connection could also lead to electrical arcing, which could generate sufficient heat to damage surrounding material, increasing the risk of a fire.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect for the presence of glue or other contamination at the B+ cable attachment to the alternator and clean the connection and reattach the B+ cable connection, as necessary. If arcing has damaged the cable, nut, or alternator, the dealer will replace the damaged components. All services will be performed free of charge. GM issued owners an interim notification on February 4, 2020. GM issued second notice and the recall began March 9, 2019. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267. GM's number for this recall is N192273510.

When the front seat belt pretensioners deploy, hot gas may vent through an opening in the pretensioner bracket, possibly igniting the carpet.
  • Consequence: A vehicle fire could result if materials ignite inside the vehicle.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will close off the opening in the pretensioner bracket, free of charge. The recall began December 13, 2019. Negative 2019 Gmc Sierra 1500 car reviews

Update, I changed out all 4 shocks to Bilstein 5100s and added a 2 inch block in the rear. The ride and handling have been totally transformed, and the problem has been solved. Unfortunately, it did come at my expense.

I have the Denali Ultimate Package, which includes the 22I really enjoy driving my wife's Honda Pilot because it feels so smooth on the road. While the Competition may have more features, I've found that it can be a bit of a headache to deal with. After 10 months of ownership, I've lost confidence in it and wouldn't choose to buy it again.

On 3/1/19, at 1300 miles, the truck experienced starting issues due to a dead battery. After jumpstarting the vehicle with battery cables, there were noticeable changes in the ride quality and the entertainment center failed to turn on, with a black screen and the check engine light illuminated. However, we can confidently diagnose and repair the issue at Sterling McCall GMC.

I have had my 2019 Sierra since August 1st, 2019 and have driven it for 1900 miles up to January 21st, 2020. Unfortunately, the vehicle has been recalled three times for some not so minor problems in less than six months. Currently, it is at the dealer for an axle squeak that only starts after approximately 50 miles of travel. After doing some research, I found a service bulletin for the problem and supplied the bulletin number to the dealer. Initially, they were not aware of the issue and thought I was imagining it. I am sure there are many other Sierras with this problem, but the owners may not have driven the distance needed for the problem to manifest itself. I hope that the issues with my vehicle will be resolved soon and I can enjoy driving it without any further problems.

I have recently purchased a brand new 2019 GMC Sierra Denali with zero miles. However, I have noticed an annoying vibration when driving between 50 and 75 mph, which feels like the differential and transmission are grinding metals.

Positive 2019 Gmc Sierra 1500 car reviews

I recently purchased the 2019 GMC X31 Off Road SLT and I absolutely love it! However, I did encounter an issue with the B&W Tow and Stow hitch. When in the stow position and I drop down the new multifunction tailgate step, it hits the hitch due to an engineering oversight. Unfortunately, this is the case with any of my hitches and I am unable to use the step with a hitch in place. I spoke with another driver who had the same setup and he mentioned having to remove his hitches in order to use the step. After losing a lot of sleep over this issue, I was able to come up with a solution and fix the hitch problem. Now, I can leave my hitch in and use my tailgate to its full extent!

Road noise and wind noise at freeway speeds can be a bit annoying, but overall I'm very satisfied with my experience. The ride feels like a Cadillac and the handling is very good. The sound system is also great. Although I had to take it back a couple of times for minor recalls, I'm happy to report that there were no major mechanical problems.

  3. Jordy Anderson 2024-09-03

Great to hear that you're enjoying your ride! It's wonderful to know that you're experiencing a stable and smooth ride without any issues. Thank you for sharing your positive feedback with us!

You've made a great choice with this truck! It's better than the others.

  5. Esteban Wyman 2024-06-13

This vehicle is very comfortable, roomy, and has great visibility. The 6.2 motor provides lots of power, and the slide-out running boards are a big plus. I highly recommend this vehicle.
