The Chevrolet Volt is a plug-in hybrid car manufactured by General Motors, also marketed in rebadged variants as the Holden Volt in Australia and New Zealand and the Buick Velite 5 in China, and with a different fascia as the Vauxhall Ampera in the United Kingdom and as the Opel Ampera in the remainder of Europe. Volt production ended in February 2019.

Sales of the 2011 Volt began in the United States in mid-December 2010, followed by various European countries and other international markets in 2011. Global combined Volt/Ampera-family sales totaled about 177,000 units by the end of October 2018. The U.S. is the leading market, with 157,054 Volts delivered through the end of 2019, followed by Canada with 16,653 Volts sold through September 2018. Just over 10,000 Opel/Vauxhall Ampera cars had been sold in Europe as of June 2016. Until December 2018, the Volt/Ampera family of vehicles was the world's all-time bestselling plug-in hybrid vehicle. As of December 2019, the Chevrolet Volt is listed as the all-time top-selling plug-in hybrid in the American market.

The Volt operates as a pure battery electric vehicle until its battery capacity drops to a predetermined threshold from full charge. From there, its internal combustion engine powers an electric generator to extend the vehicle's range as needed. While running on gasoline at high speeds the engine may be mechanically linked (by a clutch) to a generator set, improving efficiency by 10% to 15%. The Volt's regenerative braking also contributes to the on-board electricity generation. Under the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) cycle, the 2013‍–‍15 model year Volt all-electric range is 38 mi (61 km), with a combined electric mode/gasoline-only rating of 62 mpg‑US (3.8 L/100 km; 74 mpg‑imp) equivalent (MPG equivalent).

The second-generation Volt's improved battery system and drivetrain increased the all-electric range to 53 miles (85 km), its EPA-rated fuel economy in charge-sustaining mode to 42 mpg‑US (5.6 L/100 km; 50 mpg‑imp), and the combined city/highway fuel economy in all-electric mode to 106 MPG-e, up from 98 MPG-e. Deliveries to retail customers in the U.S. and Canada began in October 2015 as a 2016 model year.

The Volt has won several awards, including the 2009 Green Car Vision Award, 2011 Green Car of the Year, 2011 North American Car of the Year, 2011 World Green Car, 2012 European Car of the Year, and 2016 Green Car of the Year.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-14
  • VIN: 1G1RD6E49DU
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: Vehicle went into reduced propulsion mode and then shut-off while driving down the highway. Same issue as recall 18V397000 that was not applied to my VIN number as part of that recall. Please apply recall 18V39000 to my vehicle VIN. Chevy Volt owners also need the NHTSA to issue an edict to GM/ that the reset codes for the ECM/HPCM2 being given to the OBD2 bi-directional scanner companies so owners don't have to pay a ransom to the dealerships and GM to get there cars back up and running.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-05-03
  • VIN: 1G1RH6E49DU
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: This report is in general for EV batteries and low propulsion, BMW also. When system moves to low propulsion the break lights do not eliminate so the vehicle slows very fast as if it is breaking but no break lights turn on, this creates a risk for other drivers, this occurs on steep mountain climbs when mountain mode was not engaged. What I want to happen is when low propulsion mode engages the break lights come on so that other drives can keep safe distance as I pull to the side for battery to recharge. This does not happen that often but when it does occur it creates a scary situation. A electric BMW also did this today. Please request a break light adaption for future EV batteries/Gas Powered vehicles. Keep in mind this is generally for electric cars that have a backup gas engine that powers after battery is depleted, they most often have issues on steep mountain climbs at freeway speeds and or in some cases as I witnessed today when behind a BMW cars slowing very quickly without alarms to other drivers. If the system can generate a low propulsion error warning drivers it can turn the break lights on also in if software is coded correctly. System should turn on break lights when this occurs for BMW and or other electric cars

By the time we reached [XXX], the Volt would not reach highway speeds as heavy traffic sped past. As NHTSA has reported in another Volt investigation, “the problem could pose a safety risk if vehicles can’t move with the flow of surrounding traffic and is more serious if a stalled vehicle is unable to restart.” 3) On Tuesday, [XXX], a Terry Labonte Chevrolet service representative in Greensboro reported that the main battery had experienced “catastrophic” failure and the “major malfunction” represented a “total loss." 4) Factory dealer Terry Labonte Chevrolet in Greensboro performed the diagnostics. 5) An instrument-panel message appeared about 15 minutes after I drove the Volt off the used-car lot in Pittsboro. The message read “propulsion power is reduced.” The owner manual (Page 5-48) read: “The vehicle may be driven at a reduced speed while this message is on, but maximum acceleration and speed may be reduced.” INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

AIR BAGS,SEATS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-01-01
  • VIN: 1G1RH6E42DU
  • Components: AIR BAGS,SEATS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The passenger side seat airbag sensor is malfunctioning. A message displaying “Service Airbag” comes up and the airbag light comes on. This happens numerous times during a typical drive (around 20 minutes) The airbag is turned off while the message and light is displayed. This issue has been occurring for about a year or two now. Starting around 90k miles, currently has 111k miles. I’ve done my research on this issue and many other Volt owners have this issue. Which is caused by a defect in the passenger side sensor mat in the seat that can fold over itself with normal use, causing the issue.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-26
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: 1G1RF6E40DU
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I arrived at the charging station and plugged the charging handle into the charge port. At this time an audible shorting sound was heard coming from inside the handle followed by a burst of flames and white smoke. This flame immediately went out and the smoke subsided slightly before building back up and darkening. By the time that the fire department arrived, the car's engine had caught fire resulting in a total loss. Additionally, the charging handle of the station had melted, alongside the side mirror of a neighboring vehicle. It appears that there was a failure to detect the initial fault or at least a lack of protections for shorts. The parts are no longer available upon inspection, unless you have contact with the EVSE manufacturer, ChargePoint. My safety was put directly at risk. The charging handle shorted in my hand. In the unlucky case that the short made contact with me, I likely would've died on the spot or been at risk of burns from the subsequent fire. Additionally, should I have been in the car, I noticed when trying to get pictures of the inside, that the doors had remained locked. The problem cannot be reproduced because the car is burnt. The car has been inspected by insurance representatives alongside the look over by firefighters and police officers on site during the fire. There were no issues inside the vehicle hinting to any problem. I had used the charging station next to this one consistently each day going into work with no problems. When I arrived, the car which is usually parked at this problem charger was in the spot I usually used, which caused me to use this problem charger. While the exact cause is somewhat unknown, the initial perception by fire fighters, police, and myself were that the fire was due to the EVSE handle shorting out. The evidence for this is the location of the fire damage external to the vehicle and the melted handle. Chargepoint disagrees but does not state an alternative possible cause.

AIR BAGS,SEATS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-03-10
  • VIN: 1G1RE6E49DU
  • Components: AIR BAGS,SEATS
  • Summary: According to NHTSA's own filing - Action PE19013 - GM's response to the action was to "establish a cost reduction program". I have now had this exact problem diagnosed, and repaired at a cost of $1,133. Neither GM, nor the Chevrolet dealership where I had the repair done had any information or provided and discounts or cost reduction. Either NHTSA has lied in its report, or GM has lied to NHTSA in order to close this incident. I should have the cost of this repair "reduced".

Negative 2013 Chevrolet Volt car reviews

  1. Mackenzie Rolfson 2024-11-08

I have owned a Volt for 2 years and unfortunately, I have had to replace the radiator and water pump. The radiator was quite expensive at $1100.00 and it took the dealer 3 days to return the car to me. Currently, the car needs a new battery which costs $300.00. Additionally, there is a leak in the battery which causes it to leak on the passenger side during car washes. This repair will cost around $400.00. As someone who has owned 9 Chevrolets in the past, I must say that this will be my last one. If you are considering purchasing a new car, I would recommend looking at a Prius instead.

  2. Elwin Ritchie 2024-07-04

I have had multiple issues with my Volts. In 2012, I purchased two Volts, both of which were bought back by GM due to major issues. One of them would die with no power at all, and the other had Regen Drivetrain Bearing failures. I accepted a 2013 Volt, thinking that the bugs had been worked out, but unfortunately, they had not. I have been in and out of the dealer too many times for a then $45k car. I would not recommend any GM product after the way I have been treated. Despite being told by the director for Chevy after sales that they would not fix my car, I have done my research and found that bearing issues in the drivetrain are a common problem. I strongly advise anyone considering purchasing a Volt to read the forums and research thoroughly before making a decision.

  3. Dimitri Romaguera 2024-06-25

I decided to try out the 2013 Volt after my '10 Prius hit 90K. My car is loaded with almost every option and I paid 34K before tax credit. I drive 36 miles round trip to work and usually make it on electric. The pros of this car are that it is tight, drives like a vault, quiet, smooth, and has great technology and interior/exterior styling. It also has fantastic fuel economy and is an American car. However, there are some cons to consider such as the price, even after a $9000 dealer discount, and poor craftsmanship. There have been lots of problems with the car such as poor ergonomics, buttons scattered about the center stack, seat heater turning on by itself, electric charger door falling off, 110v charger stopped working, trim pieces falling off, and iPod stopped working. Despite these issues, I still enjoy driving my Volt.

  4. Leone Windler 2024-03-21

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with the Volt. I've been driving it for 18 months and overall, I've really enjoyed it. However, I did have a scary situation recently when I went to unplug the charger and the outlet was melted. I reached out to GM and my dealer, Woodward Motors in Andover, MA, and have been working with them for the past month to resolve the issue. This car has proven to be incredibly unreliable, having stranded me three times in the first year and a half of ownership, including two times in dangerous situations. Despite my initial excitement as a long-time Prius driver looking for a more luxurious eco-friendly car made in America, I have been disappointed by the repeated breakdowns. While the dealership has attempted to address the issues, including replacing a defective part, the car continues to malfunction. I caution potential buyers, particularly women, to consider the safety risks associated with this vehicle.

I used to go to gas stations every two weeks for 40 years, but now I only need to go once a year thanks to my Chevy Volt. Last year, I only used 4.2 gallons of gas, which is amazing! The Chevy Volt has won numerous awards, including being voted the BEST ENGINEERED car on the road today by 128,000 automotive engineers from around the world SAE. I completely agree with this! The Volt is so easy to drive and makes my commute effortless. The acceleration is smooth and powerful, and it feels like I'm coasting even when going uphill at full throttle. I've driven 38,000 hard city miles in 5 years and haven't had a single problem. The batteries are still going strong and I haven't noticed any range drop. Plus, the Volt is incredibly cost-effective, only costing me less than 3 cents per mile for fuel and maintenance.

I bought my 2013 Volt in May of that year and have driven it for over 165,000 miles with only two minor issues, both of which were promptly resolved by GM. I drive 120 miles round trip for work, and in the summer, about half of my commute is on battery power. The car's lifetime average is currently at an impressive 56.7 mpg, which will only increase during the summer months. The ride is smooth and comfortable, and my only complaint is that my spoiled kids wish it had a DVD entertainment system and heated rear seats. The car has handled Colorado winters with ease, thanks in part to the tires I chose to replace the factory ones. I have no worries about the dependability and longevity of the vehicle, and I sold it to my nephew with confidence that it will serve him just as well.

I traded my BMW X3 for the Volt and I am thoroughly impressed with the technology and engineering of this vehicle. My wife and I primarily use it for around town driving with the occasional road trip. I love the fact that you will essentially not use any gas in city driving as long as you stay below the 38 mile range, which means no CO2 or carbon monoxide emissions at all. The car is comfortable (I am 6'3

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your Volt! It sounds like it's been a great fit for your daily commute, and it's impressive how little gas you've used. The way you describe the Volt's performance is really exciting - it must be a blast to drive! Thanks for sharing your experience, and I hope you continue to love your Volt for years to come.

That's a great car! It's one of the most advanced vehicles on the road, and you can buy a used one for a fraction of the original price.
