History
The Silverado nameplate made its debut for the 1975 model year, becoming the top trim level on all Chevrolet C/K trucks, slotted above Custom Deluxe, Scottsdale, and Cheyenne. For the 1968 model year (seven years before the Silverado), GMC C/K trucks used variations of the Sierra name (Sierra, Sierra Classic, Sierra Grande, and High Sierra). Even after the C/K series officially ended, GM still uses the CK and the CC in their current model codes, to denote a two-wheel drive (CC), and four-wheel drive (CK).
For the 1988 GMT400 model architecture, Chevrolet retained the C/K model nomenclature, with GMC branding its full-size line as Sierras. While sharing the same body and chassis, the model chronology of the Silverado and Sierra are different, with five generations of the Sierra, while four of the Silverado.
In 2018, at the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, Indiana, Chevrolet unveiled the first medium-duty Silverado, expanding the model line to a 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD chassis cab. Largely the successor to the 2003–2009 GMT560 chassis, the medium-duty trucks are exclusive to Chevrolet, with no plans for an equivalent GMC version. Instead, Navistar International (now partnering with GM) would sell the medium-duty trucks as a rebadged counterpart, called the CV. This is in fact a very similar nod to how the Avalanche did not have a GMC Yukon–based equivalent, but instead, Cadillac would take its place as the former's rebadged counterpart, the Escalade EXT.

This truck is amazing! It has great acceleration and power. I recently drove from Los Angeles to Bozeman, Montana in just 2 days, covering around 1400 miles, and it didn't even have a hiccup or lose any oil. We even had a snow storm the other day and the truck drove like it was on dry pavement. When I was shopping for a new truck, I was looking for one with plenty of torque, so the Japanese trucks were out of the question. I had to decide whether to choose Ford or GM, but I eventually decided on the GMC because I loved the style and it had everything I wanted.

Love this truck so far.. 7 months old no problems yet. Added an ARE cap over bed and love it, got the Suburban look minus the $15,000 difference in price. Fits the car seats easily and the adults even easier. Haven't done a long trip yet but Summer is aproaching and a looking forward to the drive. (Even if the gas costs $4.00 per gal.) Wish I could get better gas mileage but it's a full size truck not a Honda CRV, which is easy to remember when I load it to the hilt , shopping or constructing, get it all in. Only things added was remote starter and sliding rear window (vital) which were negotiated during sale.

Your GMC truck is very reliable. The body integrity, motor and drive train have given you nothing but good service. You drive it to work every day, which is about 120 mile round trip, and find it comfortable and safe to handle and control in heavy traffic. It's great to hear that you enjoy your truck so much!

You've driven about 2200 miles in the first month, half of which were towing a 5,500 lb. ski/wakeboard boat. This truck is incredible for towing! The AWD never spins on the ramp or backing up your 13% driveway with the boat. Loaded, the ride is excellent. Unloaded, it's a little choppy compared to your previous Yukon Denali XL, but hey, it's a truck. The mileage is better than your '01 DXL at 14mpg average. Again, it's a 345HP truck, it's for hauling. This is a great truck! Unloaded, this thing is fast for a truck and fun to drive. No problems so far.

The crew cab option means you have a short bed. If you want to haul something the size of a sheet of plywood, you have to have the tail gate down. However, since this vehicle has a 6 liter engine, it can pull 8000# with no problems, even though it may not be the most fuel-efficient option.

Hi there! I noticed that you had a 99 Chevy Z71 that you drove for over 200k miles, wow! I hope it served you well. I see that you traded it in for a GMC Crew 2WD with the 5.3 L, that's great! While it's not perfect, it's still a comfortable ride for those long trips. I understand that the gas mileage isn't ideal, averaging around 14 in the city and 16 on the highway. Also, it seems like it struggles a bit when towing anything over 500 #'s, which can be frustrating. I agree that the steering and rear-end chirp can be annoying, but I'm glad to hear that you still find it comfortable, especially with the cloth seats. Thanks for sharing your experience with me!

This truck has been reliable for the most part, with only minor issues before the warranty expired. It performed well in winter conditions in western Canada and achieved great highway mileage while providing a reasonably comfortable ride. However, in the past two years, I have had to replace the transmission at 65K, the 4WD position sensor three times, the tie rods twice, and the front hubs once. Despite these issues, all accessories still work. While the fit and finish are not perfect, they are not terrible either. Although I have had negative experiences with GM in the past, I believe this truck has potential to be a good choice for those in need of a reliable vehicle.

It seems like the casteck heads in my 5.3 are defective and they are causing a coolant leak. This is resulting in a sound that resembles a bad lifter. It's important to know which heads are in your 5.3 before making a purchase, otherwise you may end up with a truck that requires repairs that exceed its value.

Have you ever wondered why GM truck owners have to turn their hitches upside down? It seems that even with Z-71, the suspension and trailering provisions are too soft and too low. Additionally, the standard rear-end is going to be a 3.42, which is great for mileage but not so good for loading. Even with the 5.3, the engineers have turned up the computer trying to hide the small rear end. Posi-trac is not so good, and one slick boat ramp and you will be glad for 4WD. Even when empty on the highway using cruise, the drivetrain cannot maintain enough power on hills to keep from downshifting and raising the RPMs. Personally, I pull three trailers ranging from 900 to 5100 pounds, and all of them will wag this truck around easily. I have gone through three sets of brakes/rotors already.
