The Chevrolet Silverado is a range of trucks manufactured by General Motors under the Chevrolet brand. Introduced for the 1999 model year, the Silverado is the successor to the long-running Chevrolet C/K model line. Taking its name from the top trim level from the Chevrolet C/K series, the Silverado is offered as a series of full-size pickup trucks, chassis cab trucks, and medium-duty trucks. The fourth generation of the model line was introduced for the 2019 model year.

The Chevrolet Silverado shares mechanical commonality with the identically related GMC Sierra; GMC ended the use of the C/K nomenclature a model generation prior to Chevrolet. In Mexico, high-trim level versions of the Silverado use the Chevrolet Cheyenne name (not to be confused with the 2003 concept). Competing against the Ford F-Series, Ram Pickup, Toyota Tundra, and Nissan Titan, the Silverado is among the best-selling vehicles in the United States, having sold over 12 million trucks since its introduction in 1998 as a 1999 model year.

History

The Silverado nameplate made its debut for the 1975 model year, becoming the top trim level on all Chevrolet C/K trucks, slotted above Custom Deluxe, Scottsdale, and Cheyenne. For the 1968 model year (seven years before the Silverado), GMC C/K trucks used variations of the Sierra name (Sierra, Sierra Classic, Sierra Grande, and High Sierra). Even after the C/K series officially ended, GM still uses the CK and the CC in their current model codes, to denote a two-wheel drive (CC), and four-wheel drive (CK).

For the 1988 GMT400 model architecture, Chevrolet retained the C/K model nomenclature, with GMC branding its full-size line as Sierras. While sharing the same body and chassis, the model chronology of the Silverado and Sierra are different, with five generations of the Sierra, while four of the Silverado.

In 2018, at the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, Indiana, Chevrolet unveiled the first medium-duty Silverado, expanding the model line to a 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD chassis cab. Largely the successor to the 2003–2009 GMT560 chassis, the medium-duty trucks are exclusive to Chevrolet, with no plans for an equivalent GMC version. Instead, Navistar International (now partnering with GM) would sell the medium-duty trucks as a rebadged counterpart, called the CV. This is in fact a very similar nod to how the Avalanche did not have a GMC Yukon–based equivalent, but instead, Cadillac would take its place as the former's rebadged counterpart, the Escalade EXT.

Negative 2006 Gmc Sierra 1500 car reviews

  1. Akeem Russel 2025-04-01

I saw this car on the lot and immediately fell in love with its looks. The interior is roomy and laid out well, with very good fit and finish. It's also really fun to drive and a real head-turner. I took great care of it, maintaining it 100% inside and out. Unfortunately, I experienced some issues between 40,000 and 60,000 miles, including 4 tie rods, 4 front hubs, 4 brake jobs, a rebuilt front and rear differential, u-joints, and a drive shaft that was out of alignment. The steering column was also rattling like my 2002 car. I went to 2 dealers and even spoke with the factory rep for warranty help, but unfortunately, they were unable to assist me. At 70,000 miles, the master cylinder and ABS started to go, so I decided to trade it in. The dealer gave me a great deal plus rebates, and I ended up trading it in for a 2009 GMC Sierra Z71 Crew Cab. I know, I know, this is my third try, but I'm hopeful that this one will be better. I'm picking it up in two days, and it comes with a 5-year, 100,000-mile warranty. I'm confident that any problems I may have will be taken care of by the dealership.

Although I initially had a few quality control issues with the speakers blowing, weather seal falling off, passenger armrest detaching, and the rear brake light assembly falling off, I have had some challenges with the truck since then. Unfortunately, at 57k miles, the transmission blew, and shortly after, the transfer case failed. At 70k miles, the driver's side wheel bearing failed, and six months later, the same bearing failed again. At 75k miles, I had to replace the rotors for the second time, and I also had to replace the solenoid on the gas tank and the steering shaft knuckle. After 79k miles, the truck quivers and rattles over the smallest of bumps. I also forgot to mention the rust on the rocker panels, doors, and wheel wells. Despite all of these issues, my kids still make fun of the truck, calling it a lemon.

I recently bought a 2006 Sierra 1500 Hybrid 4x4. Unfortunately, after just six months of ownership, the stator, which is a crucial part of the electrical system, failed. Despite my disappointment, I was even more disappointed when I learned that the part is no longer available and GM was unable to offer any assistance. As a result, I have decided to switch to Ford.

  4. Felix Effertz 2024-08-01

Hello! I use this vehicle for business and usually replace it every two years after driving about 100,000 miles on gravel, off-road, and highways. My previous truck was an 05 F150, but I chose the GMC for its impressive gas mileage, which is better than my experience with Ford and Dodge. However, I did notice that the GMC has more interior noise at highway speeds than the new model F150. Also, the GMC's trailer towing capacity is lower than the F150's, and I can't really use cruise control on the GMC as it revs too high. On uneven roads, the GMC has a lot of body flex and creaks like a covered wagon. Thanks for listening!

  5. Kurt Yost 2024-02-17

The truck was great for the first two years, but unfortunately, I've had some issues since then. I had to replace a wiring harness which caused the 4wd to fail, and now I've had to replace a front end hub. The dealer said it was caused by a pothole and/or moisture buildup, but I don't recall hitting anything that hard. The repairs have cost me over $900 so far. I've owned two other GM trucks since '92, but I'm afraid this will be my last. I'm concerned about what might happen if I go over 50,000 miles.

Positive 2006 Gmc Sierra 1500 car reviews

  1. Woodrow Grimes 2025-03-24

What a handsome truck! The price was very reasonable, coming in at $6,000 less than a comparable Titan. The combination of performance and fuel economy is excellent for a 4X4 large truck category, averaging 17 mpg. I did have two complaints, however. Firstly, the gearing was too tall with 3.42 gears in all 4X4 trucks I looked at, making towing a bit difficult. I corrected this problem with 4.10 gears, and now the truck pulls hard and feels more powerful than the Titan I drove, and even my dad's Hemi Ram. Secondly, there is no grab handle for the driver, which can be a bit inconvenient. Despite these minor issues, I am very happy with my purchase. I also added a programmer intake and exhaust, and even with an 8

  2. Chet O'Hara 2025-03-02

This truck is incredibly smooth! Even my wife, who has never been a fan of driving my trucks, is excited to get behind the wheel of this one. I've owned Fords and Dodges in the past, but this Z-71 Sierra is my first and it comes with all the bells and whistles, except for a universal garage door opener. The engine is powerful and provides fast acceleration, which can be deceiving when it comes to speed. Plus, it gets approximately 3 miles per gallon more than my 2001 Dodge truck. Living in hilly areas, I average about 15 MPG with the 4X4 truck. The Crew Cab is perfect for my two growing boys, who now have plenty of room in the back seat. Even grown adults don't mind riding in the back seat of my truck. Trust me, you can't go wrong with this vehicle! If you're in the market for a new truck, make sure to test drive this one!!

  3. Maximus Collier 2025-02-22

Congratulations on your 1st GMC Truck! It sounds like you did your research and made a great choice. The ride is nice and there's plenty of room, making it a fun vehicle to drive. It's also impressive how well it tows - you were able to haul 1/2 ton of sand with no problem. Despite its weight, the gas mileage is good too. Plus, you have a clear view of all vehicle traffic while driving, which is always important. Enjoy your new truck!

  4. Milton Thiel 2025-02-21

I bought my truck new at the end of 2005 and I absolutely love it! The exterior styling is fantastic and the interior design is quite impressive. Although I did experience a minor issue with the transmission at 64000 miles, my dealership was able to lobby GM and we were able to split the cost of a new transmission. I ended up paying $1500, but I received a brand new GM transmission with a 5 year 100,000 mile warranty, so I'm pretty satisfied with the outcome.

  5. Leif Kessler 2024-11-15

It's great to hear about your experience with different truck brands! Your choice of a GMC truck sounds like a perfect fit for your needs. The four doors and small but powerful V-8 5.3 L engine are definitely impressive features. It's also great to hear that you're getting equal gas mileage to a Nissan Frontier, but with a full-size truck. The comfortable seats and easy cab access are definitely important factors to consider when choosing a truck. And the dual climate zones and fuel filler on the driver's side are definitely convenient features. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on your GMC truck!
