1999 Gmc Sierra 1500 problems
The Chevrolet Silverado is a range of trucks manufactured by General Motors under the Chevrolet brand. Introduced for the 1999 model year, the Silverado is the successor to the long-running Chevrolet C/K model line. Taking its name from the top trim level from the Chevrolet C/K series, the Silverado is offered as a series of full-size pickup trucks, chassis cab trucks, and medium-duty trucks. The fourth generation of the model line was introduced for the 2019 model year.
The Chevrolet Silverado shares mechanical commonality with the identically related GMC Sierra; GMC ended the use of the C/K nomenclature a model generation prior to Chevrolet. In Mexico, high-trim level versions of the Silverado use the Chevrolet Cheyenne name (not to be confused with the 2003 concept). Competing against the Ford F-Series, Ram Pickup, Toyota Tundra, and Nissan Titan, the Silverado is among the best-selling vehicles in the United States, having sold over 12 million trucks since its introduction in 1998 as a 1999 model year.
History
The Silverado nameplate made its debut for the 1975 model year, becoming the top trim level on all Chevrolet C/K trucks, slotted above Custom Deluxe, Scottsdale, and Cheyenne. For the 1968 model year (seven years before the Silverado), GMC C/K trucks used variations of the Sierra name (Sierra, Sierra Classic, Sierra Grande, and High Sierra). Even after the C/K series officially ended, GM still uses the CK and the CC in their current model codes, to denote a two-wheel drive (CC), and four-wheel drive (CK).
For the 1988 GMT400 model architecture, Chevrolet retained the C/K model nomenclature, with GMC branding its full-size line as Sierras. While sharing the same body and chassis, the model chronology of the Silverado and Sierra are different, with five generations of the Sierra, while four of the Silverado.
In 2018, at the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, Indiana, Chevrolet unveiled the first medium-duty Silverado, expanding the model line to a 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD chassis cab. Largely the successor to the 2003–2009 GMT560 chassis, the medium-duty trucks are exclusive to Chevrolet, with no plans for an equivalent GMC version. Instead, Navistar International (now partnering with GM) would sell the medium-duty trucks as a rebadged counterpart, called the CV. This is in fact a very similar nod to how the Avalanche did not have a GMC Yukon–based equivalent, but instead, Cadillac would take its place as the former's rebadged counterpart, the Escalade EXT.

Common 1999 Gmc Sierra 1500 problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the GMC Sierra 1500 1999, several common problems have been reported. Here is a detailed list of these issues:
- Windshield Wiper Motor Component Failure:
- Owners of the GMC Sierra 1500 1999 have experienced intermittent issues with the windshield wiper motor. This problem can lead to the wipers not working, failing to turn on or off, or only working at one speed setting. A faulty wiper motor control board can cause these issues. Temporary fixes include tapping on the control box to get the wipers working again, but a permanent solution involves replacing the wiper motor control board.
- Coolant Leaks or Oil Leaks From Intake Manifold Gaskets:
- Another common problem reported by owners is coolant or oil leaks from the intake manifold gaskets. This issue can be costly to repair, with an approximate cost of $1,000 if done by a mechanic. Some drivers have even had to replace the motors multiple times due to this problem.
- Restricted Secondary Air Injection Valves:
- Owners have faced issues with restricted secondary air injection check valves in the Sierra 1500 1999. This problem can lead to reduced airflow and trigger the check engine light. Resolving this issue involves replacing the check valves, which may cost between $100 and $150 per valve. It is recommended to replace both valves even if the fault code indicates a problem with only one bank of cylinders.
- Failed Steering Wheel Position Sensor:
- A common issue with the GMC Sierra 1500 1999 is a failed steering wheel position sensor. This can trigger a service stability message, occurring intermittently or regularly, especially when starting the truck or turning the wheel. Replacing the sensor, which costs around $200 to $300, is the recommended solution. On average, this issue occurs around 90,000 miles.
These problems highlight some of the key issues that owners of the GMC Sierra 1500 1999 have faced. Addressing these issues promptly and accurately can help maintain the performance and reliability of this vehicle.

- VIN: 2GTEK19T1X1
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: ABS Brakes cut out leaving you with little to no brakes. No warning light appears. This continues on and off over time. Then that ABS warning light came on. When the warning light was on, brakes worked just not ABS. Light would go out and back to the original issue. Took it in to dealership when the light remained on. They reset the light and told me every thing was fine. And charged me $$$. ABS Brake warning light can right back on. Had the manager drive it. Told me it was fine, brakes worked well. The ABS warning would go in and out. Removed the ABS fuse, so I could depend on being able to stop, without having to worry about the ABS cutting in and out for a few years. Watched for recalls, nothing appeared. Noticed on blogs, others were having the same issue. Took it to a great mechanic! Who verified there were no leaks in the brake lines, replaced one line that had been known to have issues on this type of truck and verified there were no air bubbles on the lines. Still same issue, then replaced the computer system for the ABS. No codes ever came up on the computer system that I can recall. Had more issues with the ABS. Would go to stop, (generally on a hill) then when it came to the final stopping, I had NO BRAKES, had to slam on the brakes to stop. ABS Brake warning lights never came on. My mechanic looked and looked and relooked into this. Found from others that blogged that they had similar issues, that one or both of the ABS Brake sensors were not responding evenly causing an issue. Changed out the sensor. All is good now. This issues could have put and my family in danger a number of times. I was blessed to avoid a few accidents by driving far enough behind people and or had an emergency line to pull into when unable to stop. Hope a recall comes soon for these issues to prevent someone from being killed. These took place from about 2015-fixed 2020. Email me with a report number and where I can upload info at a later date, I will do so.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

- Summary: I WAS DRIVING HOME FROM WORK ON 421 IN EMINENCE, KY. I PUSHED THE BRAKE PEDAL & I HAD NO BRAKES RIGHT IN FRONT OF HARRY HILL PARK. GM & I ARE VERY LUCKY THAT NO ONE WAS KILLED YESTERDAY. THE BRAKE LINE CORRODED & LEAKED THE BRAKE FLUID, SO WHEN I PUSHED THE PEDAL, IT WENT RIGHT TO THE FLOOR. THE VEHICLE IS PRETTY CLEAN & AFTER CHECKING MANY BLOGS & YOUTUBE VIDEOS THIS IS A VERY COMMON PROBLEM ON GM TRUCKS. I CHECKED THE RECALLS ON THIS TRUCK & THE TAILGATE CABLE IS RECALLED FOR BREAKING UNDER LOAD DUE TO CORROSION; THIS COULD INJURE SOMEBODY, BUT NOT AS VITAL COMPARED TO THE BRAKING SYSTEM AS SOMEONE COULD DIE IN A HORRIBLE INCIDENT. I WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS SERIOUS MATTER. THANK YOU

- Summary: I PURCHASED THIS TRUCK A FEW MONTHS AGO. WITHIN A WEEK I HAD A CO WORKER POINT OUT THE BED WAS LEANING TOWARD THE CAB. A FEW WEEKS LATER WE GOT UNDER THE TRUCK TO FIND OUT WHAT WAS GOING ON. WE NOTICED ALOT OF RUST. I LOOKED ON LINE TO SEE HOW TO FIX IT AND FOUND ALOT OF PEOPLE WERE DEALING WITH THE SAME ISSUE. I DECIDED TO GET SOME SHEET METAL AND WELD IT TO THE FRAME. I THEN ASKED MY BOSS WHO OWNS A WELDER IF HE COULD HELP ME WITH IT. HE SAID THERE WASN'T ANYTHING LEFT TO WELD TO. THEN THE TRUCK STARTED NOT GOING INTO PARK. AND TO START IT YOU'D HAVE TO START IT IN NEUTRAL AND IT WOULD NOT STAY IN PARK, IT WOULD ROLL AND THE EMERGENCY BRAKE NO LONGER WORKED. I THEN HAD MY PARENTS TO TAKE THE TRUCK TO A BODY SHOP TO SEE IF THEY COULD REPAIR IT. BOTH BODY SHOPS SAID IT WAS NOT REPAIRABLE THAT THE FRAME WAS RUSTED OUT AND NEEDED REPLACED. ONE SHOP SAID THAT THE PARKING ISSUE COULD BE FROM THE FRAME BENDING, BUT DID NOT KNOW WITHOUT GETTING INTO THAT. THEY ALSO TOLD THEM THAT THE TRUCK WAS UNSAFE TO BE ON THE ROAD. I FINANCED THIS TRUCK FOR $5500 AND NOW I'M PAYING PAYMENTS ON A TRUCK I CAN'T EVEN USE.

This is the second GMC Sierra I've owned (drove the first one for 10 years), and I'm so glad to say that they've both been excellent vehicles - extremely comfortable and reliable.
-
I hope you're having a great time with your GMC Sierra! It sounds like you've made some modifications to it, which is always exciting. I love the convenience of the push-button and on-the-fly 4X4 options. It's great to hear that the truck rides so smoothly, even better than most cars you've driven. The dual pipes, chrome rims, tinted windows, and windshield visor you added definitely make it stand out and turn heads!
-
My Z71 has been nothing short of the best vehicle I have ever owned. I have driven it on many long trips and it is an awesome truck. It has never let me down in any task I have required it to perform. I'm a firm believer in the fact that I will be a GMC man forever.
-
I bought it as a second truck compared to my 06 tundra 2wd. My new awesome GMC is 4WD and I found myself driving it more than I thought. It hasn't had any problems in the 5k miles I've put on it. I bought it with 123K and it sounded just as good as the new ones on the lot. I love the look of it and the ride.
-
This truck has been incredibly reliable and it still looks great! It has pulled whatever we needed it to, including cars from CA to MO and back, with no problems at all.

This truck has had numerous issues, including recalls and other problems that were not recalled. Despite its high cost of $32000, it has experienced misfires, hesitations, and other issues that have impacted its performance. The dealer's response was less than satisfactory, but it is clear that this model has several issues that need to be addressed.

My 1999 GMC Sierra 1500 has been a major disappointment. The driver's side window stopped moving and upon inspection, I found that the motor assembly is poorly designed and difficult to access. Additionally, my transmission has started to fail at only 65,000 miles and two wheel bearings went out simultaneously. The fuel efficiency is also poor, with only 12 to 13 miles per gallon in California traffic. Furthermore, the turning radius is unreasonably large. These issues have led me to conclude that I will not be purchasing another GM product in the future.

Sorry to hear about the issues you've been having with your vehicle. It looks like you've had to spend quite a bit of money on repairs and replacements. Have you been able to address all of the recalls? Additionally, it seems like there may be some issues with the engine. I hope you're able to get everything sorted out soon.

Quickly, I'd like to say that my GMC has been a comfortable, durable, and reliable truck for the two years I've owned it. It's a very powerful truck. The only complaint I have about it is the cheap and bland interior. Other than that, it's a great truck to own.
