History
The Silverado nameplate made its debut for the 1975 model year, becoming the top trim level on all Chevrolet C/K trucks, slotted above Custom Deluxe, Scottsdale, and Cheyenne. For the 1968 model year (seven years before the Silverado), GMC C/K trucks used variations of the Sierra name (Sierra, Sierra Classic, Sierra Grande, and High Sierra). Even after the C/K series officially ended, GM still uses the CK and the CC in their current model codes, to denote a two-wheel drive (CC), and four-wheel drive (CK).
For the 1988 GMT400 model architecture, Chevrolet retained the C/K model nomenclature, with GMC branding its full-size line as Sierras. While sharing the same body and chassis, the model chronology of the Silverado and Sierra are different, with five generations of the Sierra, while four of the Silverado.
In 2018, at the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, Indiana, Chevrolet unveiled the first medium-duty Silverado, expanding the model line to a 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD chassis cab. Largely the successor to the 2003–2009 GMT560 chassis, the medium-duty trucks are exclusive to Chevrolet, with no plans for an equivalent GMC version. Instead, Navistar International (now partnering with GM) would sell the medium-duty trucks as a rebadged counterpart, called the CV. This is in fact a very similar nod to how the Avalanche did not have a GMC Yukon–based equivalent, but instead, Cadillac would take its place as the former's rebadged counterpart, the Escalade EXT.

I recently purchased this truck brand new and it has been performing exceptionally well. Despite living in the desert where plastic pieces tend to break easily, this truck has held up remarkably well and still looks like new even after 10 years. There have been a few maintenance issues such as a plastic retainer on the tailgate latch and cover that broke while trying to access it at 120,000 miles, a water pump at 105,000 miles, and a fuel pump that went bad around 40,000 miles due to bad gas. However, the dealer replaced the fuel pump (under warranty) with an S-10 style pump which caused many problems. Once I went to an independent repair shop, it got fixed right. The only minor issue I faced was that it took 45 minutes to lower the spare tire due to a warped plastic sleeve that the jack handle goes into. On average, I get 15-17 mpg (including 70+++ mph to Vegas).

I really like my truck! It has pretty good gas mileage for a V-8, getting about 18-21 mpg in the city and 22-24 mpg on the highway. The ride is really comfortable, but I have had a few issues with the rear driveline. I had to replace both u-joints about 6 months ago and now it is squeaking and clanking again. I think the rear axle probably needs to be rebuilt. The 3rd door is a nice feature, but the back seat is a little smaller than I'd like. It has pretty good power and towing capabilities. Unfortunately, the heater is not very warm and I have to put it on high to even feel any air flow.

Your truck sounds great! It has everything you need and looks good too. It's good to hear that you haven't had many problems with it, and the gas mileage is not bad for its size. It's always nice to get compliments on your vehicle. The only minor issue you mentioned was with the power window motors and the 4 wd switch, but it seems like a common problem among c/k 1500 owners. You've added some nice touches to it with the stainless wheel to wheel nerf bars, tubular grill, and soft snapless extreme tonneau cover. Overall, it sounds like a reliable and stylish truck!

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I've driven it for 2.5 years and put 65,000 miles on it, and I'm happy to say that it's been a great ride. It feels like driving a car, but it performs like a truck. Plus, it gets good gas mileage and I haven't had any problems with it. The 40/20/40 seats also provide excellent lumbar support. The truck rides and handles well, and fuel economy is acceptable. I also use it to tow my 18-foot boat without any problems. However, I have noticed numerous body rattles lately, despite having only 41000 miles on it. Additionally, the exterior paint is not very durable and scratches easily.

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my truck. While it is comfortable and has adequate power, I have had some issues with the quality of some components. Recently, when I had the front brakes replaced, I was informed that the rear (emergency) brakes needed to be replaced as well, as they were metal on metal. I had only used the emergency brakes a few times since purchasing the truck, so this was surprising. The dealer informed me that the factory had redesigned the mechanism on newer models, so it seems like this was a design problem. Additionally, the fuel gauge has gone erratic twice, with a repair cost of $900 each time. They recommended a new wiring harness at the same time, which seems to be another design problem. I had a 2000 GMC Sierra 1500 for 4 years. The engine and transmission were reliable, partly because I used Mobil 1 synthetic oil and never beat on it. However, some other things with the truck started to fall apart over time. For example, the ABS system would intermittently go off at less than 5mph on dry surfaces, the fuel gauge would start and stop working, the right side mirror was flopping around in the wind, the tailgate handle (plastic) broke off when opening the tailgate one day, and the brakes were not great - including the rotors and requiring too much distance to stop. Additionally, the driver's door lock got jammed and wouldn't lock anymore, the power window linkage broke, and the radio lights quit working. Despite these issues, I enjoyed my time with the truck and appreciated its reliability when it mattered most.

Great truck with only a few minor problems. A few rattles (never off-road) and the transmission shifts oddly in cold weather. It tends to wheel-hop while braking over uneven surfaces, even with anti-lock brakes. However, it has an awesome sound system and provides a wonderful ride! I would definitely consider buying another one.

Broke down in March 2003 with this 2000 GMC 1500 6 cyl pickup at 73000 km and had to be towed. The distributor cap acquires moisture buildup and kills the spark. I am the second owner so this may have happened before. The towtruck operator and other owners in this area of Eastern Canada said this is a common problem with the newer Chev and GMC pickups in our Canadian wet but cold and damp weather. My previous 1988 Chev went for 15 yrs without this problem. What did they change?
