The Chevrolet Silverado is a range of trucks manufactured by General Motors under the Chevrolet brand. Introduced for the 1999 model year, the Silverado is the successor to the long-running Chevrolet C/K model line. Taking its name from the top trim level from the Chevrolet C/K series, the Silverado is offered as a series of full-size pickup trucks, chassis cab trucks, and medium-duty trucks. The fourth generation of the model line was introduced for the 2019 model year.

The Chevrolet Silverado shares mechanical commonality with the identically related GMC Sierra; GMC ended the use of the C/K nomenclature a model generation prior to Chevrolet. In Mexico, high-trim level versions of the Silverado use the Chevrolet Cheyenne name (not to be confused with the 2003 concept). Competing against the Ford F-Series, Ram Pickup, Toyota Tundra, and Nissan Titan, the Silverado is among the best-selling vehicles in the United States, having sold over 12 million trucks since its introduction in 1998 as a 1999 model year.

History

The Silverado nameplate made its debut for the 1975 model year, becoming the top trim level on all Chevrolet C/K trucks, slotted above Custom Deluxe, Scottsdale, and Cheyenne. For the 1968 model year (seven years before the Silverado), GMC C/K trucks used variations of the Sierra name (Sierra, Sierra Classic, Sierra Grande, and High Sierra). Even after the C/K series officially ended, GM still uses the CK and the CC in their current model codes, to denote a two-wheel drive (CC), and four-wheel drive (CK).

For the 1988 GMT400 model architecture, Chevrolet retained the C/K model nomenclature, with GMC branding its full-size line as Sierras. While sharing the same body and chassis, the model chronology of the Silverado and Sierra are different, with five generations of the Sierra, while four of the Silverado.

In 2018, at the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, Indiana, Chevrolet unveiled the first medium-duty Silverado, expanding the model line to a 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD chassis cab. Largely the successor to the 2003–2009 GMT560 chassis, the medium-duty trucks are exclusive to Chevrolet, with no plans for an equivalent GMC version. Instead, Navistar International (now partnering with GM) would sell the medium-duty trucks as a rebadged counterpart, called the CV. This is in fact a very similar nod to how the Avalanche did not have a GMC Yukon–based equivalent, but instead, Cadillac would take its place as the former's rebadged counterpart, the Escalade EXT.

Negative 2002 Gmc Sierra 1500 car reviews

  1. Enoch Lockman 2025-08-20

I really enjoyed my truck until it hit 40,000 miles. Unfortunately, the sun shell in the transmission wore out right after the warranty expired. I was able to repair it myself for $500 in parts, but for non-mechanics, finding someone to do it can be a challenge and may cost triple the amount. Additionally, I noticed a ticking sound like a valve around 20,000 miles. The dealership was very helpful and even replaced the lifters as a best guess, but unfortunately, the sound returned after only 100 miles. Although it doesn't seem to affect anything, it can be heard on only a few of the trucks. If you don't haul, I wouldn't recommend getting the hauling suspension. However, if you do, you can easily load the bed with solid rock and roll down the interstate like it wasn't even there.

  2. Gene Stanton 2025-08-14

The delivery and paperwork went smoothly and the price was right. Although the Sierra was delivered in perfect physical condition, there was a minor transmission problem that was noticed. The problem increased, but thankfully the warranty covered it. However, GM claimed that the issue was 'normal' and not a problem. Unfortunately, the suspension has been cheapened, resulting in less comfort and a harder ride, even with the smooth ride suspension ordered. If this new truck rode like my 1990 GMC 1500, I would buy three more for my kids. However, I am now hesitant to purchase another one due to the way they are being made today.

  3. Caden Walsh 2025-07-19

The engine has a lot of power, but unfortunately the 4x4 feature is only suitable for driving straight. Even when making wide turns in 4x4, the entire vehicle shakes and makes squeaking and grunting noises. Traction on any wet or winter surface without 4x4 is non-existent without a load in the long bed. The legal heavy load capacity is limited to just a few hundred pounds above the vehicle's own weight. Inside the cab, the driver's side is very narrow, which can be uncomfortable and may result in elbow bruising. It's important to wear a thick elbow pad to prevent pain and bruising. Additionally, the seat is too narrow and can bind the outer right thigh. As someone who is 5'8

The GMC Sierra 1500 with the 'HT' package was initially a promising choice for a sporty yet practical vehicle to haul cargo. However, after driving it for 8,000 miles, I have found the engine to lack low end torque, resulting in frequent shifting in first gear for passing or merging. Additionally, the ride quality on the freeway is choppy and the gas mileage is disappointing, averaging at best 15mpg. These issues have led me to be dissatisfied with the vehicle's performance.

  5. Nathaniel Konopelski 2025-05-29

The truck ran well until I had about 8000 miles on it. Unfortunately, after that, I experienced engine knocks, transmission slips, steering problems, brake problems, and a drop in gas mileage. Additionally, the tires were wearing unevenly and there were brake light electrical problems. The maintenance shop was unable to fix the issues and accused me of 4 wheeling the truck, despite never having taken it off road. I was disappointed to learn that the steering, brake, and tire problems were not covered under warranty past 1500 miles. Overall, this was not a positive experience and I do not plan on purchasing this truck again.

  1. Hugh Grady 2025-08-14

I bought my truck new in May 2002 and have only had to replace a windshield washer pump and the headlight switch, along with the obligatory maintenance items such as air, cabin, fuel and oil filters, a new serpentine belt, and plugs and wires at 100K. Despite being my daily driver for the first 10 years and currently having 174,898 miles, my truck has never even needed an alignment! I have used it to haul a trailer, and it's a regular cab, step side, 4.8 V8, with a transmission cooler and a Class III hitch receiver. I really like this truck: the cloth interior still looks new, the paint is shiny and not faded anywhere, the dash has not cracked, and the leather-wrapped wheel is still supple. Although the center armrest cover has cracked under the weight of my elbow pressing on it when I get in and settle myself in the seat, it's not noticeable unless I point it out. I can't speak highly enough about my truck, which has performed well for me over the years. It currently has 186K miles and is still going strong. In fact, last summer I polished the clear coat, and it came out beautiful: deep shine on my old metallic ox blood burgundy. I am constantly being asked if it's for sale, and I always swivel my head around and say,

I have been a proud owner of my Denali for 2 years now. It has been a great experience so far, and I have taken excellent care of my truck. However, I have recently encountered some issues with the drive shaft, steering, and transmission after the warranty ran out. I am considering trading it in for something with fewer problems. Although it has been a bit challenging to find the right parts for repairs, I still love the look, comfort, and overall package of this truck. It always turns heads wherever I go!

  3. Lucas Wunsch 2025-07-20

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my truck. I bought it back in Feb 2007 with 86,000 miles and, overall, I've been really happy with it. Of course, like any vehicle, it's had its fair share of issues. For example, at 89k miles, I had to replace the fuel pump because the previous owner didn't change the fuel filter. And at 92k miles, I had some trouble with the intake gaskets leaking, which made it difficult to start on cool summer mornings. But despite these problems, I still love my truck! It's quick, nimble, and fun to drive. Plus, it looks absolutely amazing. I drive it pretty hard about 3/4 of the time, but it never misses a beat. I've even added a K&N filter to help with the power. Overall, I'm really happy with my truck and I hope you have a great day!

  4. Khalid Funk 2025-07-07

This is an expensive truck, but every day I drive it, I think it's worth it. The four-wheel steering is awesome - parking lots are a snap! I recently pulled a U-Haul trailer with both a Toyota Sequoia and the Denali. Everything you've read is true. I did some quick lane changes and the trailer stayed right behind the truck. My hat's off to GMC on this truck. Outstanding job!

  5. Marques Boyer 2025-06-29

I love this truck! I've only had it for a year, but I think 4 wheel steering should come standard on all cars and trucks. The interior is great and the look is even better!! The power of the 6 liter is awesome. Fuel mileage is not so good, but I guess you have to give up something for all the power. These trucks have all the bells and whistles. This is truly a sports car in a truck skin! The only downside is that I can't afford 2.
