Common 1993 Bmw 318 problems
The BMW 318, built in 1993, is a popular vehicle known for its performance and style. However, like any other car, it is prone to certain common problems. This article will discuss some of the most frequently reported issues with the BMW 318 1993, based on complaints from owners of this car.
One of the most common problems with the BMW 318 1993 is rust. The car's sills, rear trailing arm mounts, front anti-roll bar mounts, and circular lifting pads underneath are particularly susceptible to rust. This issue can lead to reduced structural integrity, decreased performance, and handling problems. To address rust, the affected parts may need to be repaired or replaced, which can be costly. Regular inspections and proper maintenance can help prevent rust from forming.
Another common problem with the BMW 318 1993 is issues with the brake pipes. The front and rear brake pipes are prone to rust, but the rear ones are particularly challenging to replace due to their location. If left unchecked, rust can lead to leaking brake fluid, decreased braking performance, and a spongy or unresponsive brake pedal. To fix this issue, the affected pipes may need to be repaired or replaced.
The car's ignition barrels are also known to be problematic. A common problem with the ignition barrels is a pin inside the barrel snapping, which can cause the key to spin endlessly. This issue can be expensive to fix, costing around $6,700, so it is essential to address it as soon as possible
The volume knob on the original vehicle stereo is another common problem area. Over time, the volume knob can stop working, making it impossible to turn the volume up or down. This issue can be fixed by replacing the stereo or the volume knob itself, which can be purchased for under $100
The plastic fittings of the radiator hoses are also prone to cracking due to the car's age and the fact that it runs cold all the time. This issue can cause the lower radiator fluid reservoir to burst, potentially damaging the power steering pump and rack, as well as other power steering components
The BMW 318 1993's clutch can also be problematic. Hot clutch shudder is common in many BMWs of this period, and the 318iS model is particularly prone to this issue. This problem can cause the clutch to judder when first or second gear is engaged, especially in hot countries or during summer.
The car's driveshaft centre bearing can also be a problem area. An odd knocking under acceleration or cornering could indicate a fault with the driveshaft centre bearing, which may need to be repaired or replaced.
In summary, the BMW 318 1993 is a popular car known for its performance and style. However, like any other vehicle, it is prone to certain common problems. Rust, issues with the brake pipes, ignition barrels, volume knob, plastic fittings of the radiator hoses, clutch, and driveshaft centre bearing are some of the most frequently reported problems with this car. Regular inspections, maintenance, and timely repairs can help prevent these issues from becoming more significant problems.

1993 Bmw 318 recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 1993 Bmw 318.
- Manufacturer: BAYERISCHE MOTOREN WERKE
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:HOSES, LINES/PIPING, AND FITTINGS
- Summary: FEED FUEL HOSES CAN HARDEN AND "SET" OVER TIME, ALLOWING A SEEPAGE OF FUEL AT THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE HOSE AND THE ENGINE FITTING. THE CLAMP USED TO HOLD THE HOSE TO THE FITTING IS UNABLE TO COMPENSATE FOR THE HARDENING OF THE FEED FUEL HOSE.
- Consequence: FUEL SEEPAGE BETWEEN THE FEED FUEL HOSE AND THE ENGINE FITTING CAN RESULT IN FREE FUEL IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A FIRE WHEN EXPOSED TO A SOURCE OF IGNITION.
- Remedy: A REDESIGNED FEED FUEL HOSE AND HOSE CLAMP WILL BE INSTALLED TO ALLEVIATE THE FUEL SEEPAGE.
- Manufacturer: BAYERISCHE MOTOREN WERKE
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:FUEL INJECTION SYSTEM
- Summary: THE ADHESIVE MATERIAL OF THE TWO PIECE THROTTLE BODY HEATER MIGRATES INTO THE CIRCULATION CHAMBER CAUSING BUILD UP OF IMPURITIES AND RESTRICTION OF FLOW WITHIN THE CHAMBER. THIS CONDITION AND WATER VAPORS FROM THE CRANK THAT FREEZES AT LOW AMBIENT AIR TEMPERATURES PREVENTS THE THROTTLE PLATE FROM CLOSING AS THE DRIVER RELEASES THE GAS PEDAL, CAUSING LOSS OF THROTTLE CONTROL.
- Consequence: IF LOSS OF THROTTLE CONTROL FROM THE FROZEN THROTTLE BODY OCCURS WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION, A VEHICLE CRASH COULD OCCUR.
- Remedy: BMW DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE THROTTLE BODY HEATER WITH A MODIFIED HEATER.
