1997 Gmc Safari problems
The Chevrolet Astro is a van that was manufactured and marketed by the Chevrolet division of American auto manufacturer General Motors from 1985 to 2005. Sold alongside the GMC Safari, the Astro was marketed in multiple configurations, including passenger minivan and cargo van.
The Astro and Safari used a rear-wheel drive chassis; all-wheel drive became an option in 1990. For its entire production, the Astro and Safari were produced by Baltimore Assembly in Baltimore, Maryland; the vans would be the final model line produced by the facility. In total, approximately 3.2 million Astros and Safaris were produced from 1985 through 2005.
Background
The Astro and Safari were introduced for the 1985 model year as the first minivan from General Motors. While marketed as a response to the first-generation Chrysler minivans, GM selected a rear-wheel drive layout, sizing the Astro and Safari closely to the short-wheelbase Chevrolet G10 van. Similar to the Ford Aerostar, to reduce production costs, GM adapted light-truck powertrain components; engines and transmissions were sourced from the Chevrolet S-10, allowing for a towing capacity of up to 5,500 lb (2,500 kg).
Prior to its use on a minivan, the Astro nameplate was used twice by General Motors; in 1967 (for the Chevrolet Astro 1 concept car) and from 1969 until 1987 (on the GMC Astro COE semitractor). GMC sourced the Safari nameplate from Pontiac (used by the latter to denote station wagons). As GMC was half of the Pontiac/GMC Division (later including Buick), from 1985 through 1989, both GMC and Pontiac Safaris were simultaneously offered through the same dealership network.

Common 1997 Gmc Safari problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the GMC Safari 1997, several common problems have been reported. Here is a detailed list of these issues:
- Cranks But Does Not Start: One of the reported problems with the 1997 GMC Safari is that it cranks but does not start. This issue can be caused by various factors such as a parasitic draw, bad ground, fuel pump problems, or wiring harness issues. In some cases, a melted connector pin that connects directly to the fuel pump was identified as the cause of the no-start condition.
- Fuel Pump Issues: Owners have experienced problems with the fuel pump in the 1997 GMC Safari. This can lead to starting issues, where the fuel pump fails to prime, resulting in the engine not receiving fuel. In some instances, the connector pins connecting to the fuel pump were found to be melted, causing a no-start situation.
- Fuel Gauge Stuck on Full: Another issue reported by owners is the fuel gauge getting stuck on full. This can be an inconvenience as it affects the accuracy of the fuel level display, potentially leading to running out of fuel unexpectedly.
These problems highlight some of the common issues faced by owners of the GMC Safari 1997 model. Addressing these concerns promptly and accurately is crucial to maintaining the vehicle's performance and reliability.
Are GMC Safaris good?
GMC Safari fan
It has been very reliable and gets >17.5 mpg doing package delivery in northern Nevada. It drives well, feels planted on the road and is rattle free. With regular maintenance this van should easily eclipse 200K miles.
Is the GMC Safari front or rear wheel drive?
rear-wheel-drive
Along with the Chevrolet Astro van, Safari was GM's rear-wheel-drive response to Lee Iacocca's front-wheel-drive mini-vans at Chrysler in the mid-'80s. GM insisted van owners wanted rear-wheel-drive, truck-tough haulers, not front-wheel-drive vans built for show and not tow.

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2014-06-26
- Crash: 1
- VIN: 1GKEL19W6VB
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
- Summary: THIS VAN BELONGS TO MY MOTHER. MY SISTER WAS DRIVING THE DAY OF THE ACCIDENT. SHE IS 60 YRS OF AGE AND A VERY GOOD DRIVER. HER DESCRIPTION: "JUST PULLING AWAY FROM ONE LIGHT & COMING UP TO ANOTHER. WASN'T GOING MORE THAN 20 MPH. STEP ON THE BRAKES & THEY WEREN'T THERE." THE ACCIDENT CAUSED ABOUT $500 IN DAMAGE TO THE HONDA AUTO THAT WAS STRUCK, AND SIMILAR LIGHT DAMAGE TO THE BUMPER OF THE SAFARI. I INSPECTED SYSTEM AND FOUND NO LEAKS, AND CONCLUDED THAT MASTER CYLINDER MAY BE FAILING, SO I REPLACED IT. AFTER THAT REPAIR, HAD EXCELLENT PEDAL. I BORROWED THE VAN A FEW DAYS LATER, AND WHILE DRIVING IT, I EXPERIENCED THE SAME NO BRAKE CONDITION 3 TIMES, ONCE WHICH LEFT THE FRONT END OUT INTO AN INTERSECTION (LUCKILY, NO COLLISION). I RECOGNIZED THAT THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM WAS ERRONEOUSLY KEEPING THE FRONT BRAKES FROM APPLYING, AND THAT WAS WHAT CAUSED THE NO BRAKE CONDITION. A GM MECHANIC ADVISED ME TO PULL THE ABS FUSE. I DID SO, AND NOW THE VAN HAS GREAT BRAKES, EVERY TIME. I HAVE DONE THE SAME TO ANOTHER FAMILY VEHICLE ALSO EQUIPPED WITH THIS DANGEROUS SYSTEM; I'M NOT WAITING UNTIL IT CAUSES ANOTHER ACCIDENT. THIS CONDITION SCREAMS FOR YOUR ATTENTION. NO ONE WAS HURT BY THIS PARTICULAR FAILURE INCIDENT (EXCEPT FINANCIALLY), BUT IT IS JUST A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE SOMEONE ENDS UP GLIDING INTO A BUSY INTERSECTION, OR OVER A CROSSWALK, AND DOES CAUSE A DEATH OR TWO. PLEASE HAVE ALL THESE DANGEROUS ABS VEHICLES RECALLED, AND HAVE THESE SAFETY FEATURES-TURNED-SAFETY HAZARDS DEFEATED, BEFORE SOMEONE DOES BECOME A VICTIM.

This van is actually my second one. I used to own an Astro before, but I have to say, this one is a great driver on long trips and has plenty of towing power for my older Apache trailer. The all-wheel drive is a real life-saver, especially when I get off the pavement once in a while, and it's great on winter roads.

We bought this van in March 2004 and it has been fantastic! It doesn't leak or burn a drop of oil, even with over 150k miles on it. We did a tune-up at 145k and it runs even smoother now, which seems to have helped with the mileage - we're getting 20mpg. The 4.3L engine has plenty of power. We did have a water pump issue at 138k, but that's to be expected with older vehicles. I really love the space - you can pack so much in it! I would definitely buy another one!
-
I never had more road miles on a vehicle until I met this 1885 GMC Safari. It has been a jewel for me at a purchase price of $800.00. I did a few things to keep it up but it was well worth it when I could go from central California to northern California and then back down to southern California all in a few days! The ride was awesome and the van was a great asset to my trip!

I have a trailer and it's the only thing that can carry 8 people plus a 5,000 pound trailer without any difficulty.

Hello! I wanted to share my experience with the GMC Safari. I wrote a review back on 07/12/02 and now, with over 260K miles on it, I can confidently say that it's still going strong! In fact, we loved it so much that we added a Suburban to our GMC family and it's been just as reliable. The Safari still looks great and I haven't had any issues with oil usage or power loss. I can't recommend GMC enough!

I have experienced several issues with this vehicle since its purchase. Unfortunately, it broke down during my vacation, causing inconvenience. Despite purchasing two separate warranties, I have spent over $1000.00 on repairs within six months. Regrettably, my experience with Mount Clemens Dodge has been unsatisfactory, and I cannot recommend them. I believe that improvements are necessary in their service and honesty.
Nat Schinner 2024-06-18
These vans have a few issues. The power window motors tend to fail often, and the switches in Safaris also have several failures. Despite these little annoying problems, which most people avoid repairing due to the high cost, the vehicle has been reliable.
Maximilian Hickle 2024-06-04
I bought my van for $3000 back in 2006, and since then I've spent almost the same amount on maintenance. I've had to replace a cooling fan, two alternators, a fuel pump, a fuel filter, a fuel line, all four tires, brakes, two window motors, a windshield wiper motor, two starters, and a right front ball axle joint. Unfortunately, the cigarette lighter is broken, the A/C has a major leak and doesn't work, the locks freeze easily in the winter (I live in Ohio), the rear defrost and heat don't work, and the rear door handle broke and doesn't latch shut. Despite all of this, I wouldn't recommend this van to anyone. If you see one on the road, it's best to look away as there's a high chance that something might go wrong with your car!
Earl Zieme 2024-03-24
I have experience towing a pop-up camper across the country multiple times, and camping every summer with 5-6 people. However, it is important to tow in 3rd gear due to transmission calibration. I have also towed a full-size trailer on several trips. While I have encountered some electrical problems such as window motors (one side twice), alternator, fuel pump, blower motor, radiator, and A/C compressor ($1200), as well as needing to replace the water pump and 4 idler arms, the engine and transmission run well. Unfortunately, the tire life is not great and the rear dutch door handle has completely rusted off. The injectors also need to be cleaned. Overall, it has been a challenging but rewarding experience.
Joshuah Kuhn 2024-01-24
This vehicle is a pleasure to drive and is perfect for shopping and long trips. Although we have had to replace several parts, including window motors, a seat motor, an alternator, a fuel pump, a wiper circuit board, and other various items, some under warranty and some not, we have always been able to get it fixed. When I complained to GMC about the fuel pump, they offered me an $800 certificate towards a new GMC product, valid for one year. Unfortunately, the pump failed shortly after, and the cost of the repair exceeded the value of the certificate. Yesterday, we experienced an issue with the blower motor switch, which only worked on high. However, we are confident that we can get it fixed and continue to enjoy this great vehicle.
