The Chevrolet Astro is a van that was manufactured and marketed by the Chevrolet division of American auto manufacturer General Motors from 1985 to 2005. Sold alongside the GMC Safari, the Astro was marketed in multiple configurations, including passenger minivan and cargo van.

The Astro and Safari used a rear-wheel drive chassis; all-wheel drive became an option in 1990. For its entire production, the Astro and Safari were produced by Baltimore Assembly in Baltimore, Maryland; the vans would be the final model line produced by the facility. In total, approximately 3.2 million Astros and Safaris were produced from 1985 through 2005.

Background

The Astro and Safari were introduced for the 1985 model year as the first minivan from General Motors. While marketed as a response to the first-generation Chrysler minivans, GM selected a rear-wheel drive layout, sizing the Astro and Safari closely to the short-wheelbase Chevrolet G10 van. Similar to the Ford Aerostar, to reduce production costs, GM adapted light-truck powertrain components; engines and transmissions were sourced from the Chevrolet S-10, allowing for a towing capacity of up to 5,500 lb (2,500 kg).

Prior to its use on a minivan, the Astro nameplate was used twice by General Motors; in 1967 (for the Chevrolet Astro 1 concept car) and from 1969 until 1987 (on the GMC Astro COE semitractor). GMC sourced the Safari nameplate from Pontiac (used by the latter to denote station wagons). As GMC was half of the Pontiac/GMC Division (later including Buick), from 1985 through 1989, both GMC and Pontiac Safaris were simultaneously offered through the same dealership network.

MY LAST TRIP HAD THE ACELLERATOR STICK AND I WAS UNABLE TO CLEAR THE CONDITION.

  • Summary: CERTAIN REPLACEMENT FUEL FILTERS, FRAM BRAND NAME P/N G3727, WITH DATE CODES X52911 THROUGH X60801 SEQUENTIALLY OR X600141 AND A MEXICO COUNTRY OR ORIGIN MARKING ON THE FUEL FILTER HOUSING MANUFACTURED FROM OCTOBER 18, 2005, THROUGH MARCH 21, 2006, SOLD FOR USE ON THE VEHICLES LISTED ABOVE AND ON CERTAIN SCHOOL BUSES. (TO SEE THE SCHOOL BUS ENGINE SIZES, CLICK ON "DOCUMENT SEARCH" AND THEN "BUS APPLICATIONS"). THE CONNECTOR ON THE FUEL FILTER WAS NOT MANUFACTURED TO HONEYWELL'S SPECIFICATION. AS A RESULT, THE O-RING MAY NOT SEAT CORRECTLY ON THE FUEL LINE.
  • Consequence: THIS CONDITION MAY CAUSE AN INADEQUATE SEAL AT THE CONNECTION, POTENTIALLY LEADING TO A FUEL LEAK. IN THE PRESENCE OF AN IGNITION SOURCE, A FIRE COULD OCCUR.

    Hello! I hope this message finds you well. I just wanted to bring to your attention a safety concern that I have noticed. It seems that there is no door ajar light or alarm for any doors other than the driver side door. Even then, the door has to be completely open for the alarm to sound. I have driven with a door ajar several times and it has been a bit concerning. Additionally, I have experienced some water leakage problems with all of the doors. Lastly, I have found that there isn't much room for taller drivers. I have also noticed a rattle at slow speeds, but unfortunately the service department has been unable to fix it. Thank you for your attention to these matters!

    Mileage can be a real pain, especially if you live in the country like I do. Even a quick trip to Publix can cost you a pretty penny. I'm not sure if other areas are as bad, but getting only 14 city and 18 highway is a real bummer. The Pontiac dealers were telling me they were easily getting 21 highway, so I guess it's live and learn. I'm planning on checking out the Santa Fe at Hyundai.

    Hi there! It's great to hear that you've had your van for 5 years and it's been able to accommodate your family of 5 and all your camping gear, as well as tow your boat! While it's unfortunate that you've had some issues with little things breaking like the power window and seat motors, it's good to know that it always had enough power. As for the gas and maintenance costs, it's understandable that a larger vehicle like a van would require more upkeep. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

    Bought new as leftover, the vehicle had some minor electrical problems, but overall it rides nicely and has lots of torque. Towing is a breeze and it can easily haul a lot. While the air conditioner isn't as cold as I would like, it's still a great vehicle for driving on ice, snow, or in heavy rain. I'm happy with it so far, although like all GMs I've owned, it's put together a little sloppily. The engine and transmission are strong.

    The van has a lot of great features, but one thing to keep in mind is that the interior trim components may not be as sturdy as some people would like. Additionally, the step up to the running boards can be a bit tricky. Overall, though, it's a great vehicle!

    This is a practical, economical, and durable vehicle that is great for towing and comfortable for carrying lots of people. The ride has improved a lot with new shocks. While the design may be somewhat dated, it is very utilitarian. Personally, I really like it.

    Great gas mileage compared to the Ford Windstar and a lot more room. You can even tow a trailer with it, which is a plus. Prior to this, we had a Contour that only got about fourteen miles to the gallon, so getting twenty is fantastic!

    Good strong minivan. It has great towing capacity. The kids aren't cramped like in smaller minivans. It's also very safe and built tough.

    We purchased this van a few years ago and have been using it extensively ever since. My wife uses it daily to transport our three kids, and we have taken it on many long trips. Despite the wear and tear, it remains spacious and comfortable. We did have to replace the alternator, but it was an easy fix. Additionally, the front brakes wear out a bit faster than some other cars, but it's not a major issue. Overall, we really love this van (even though it's a bit square-looking!). We haven't found anything else on the market that can match its versatility and reliability.
